R8 The Sam/Silas/Nina angle was dropped primarily because of negative feedback, along with Kelly Monaco dissatisfaction with that storyline, so they moved her to Patrick, where she was still unhappy, until Billy Miller's Jason made her happy.

Monaco wasn't miserable with Michael Easton or Jason Thompson in particular; the pairings were unpopular, in comparison to Sam/Jason, Sam/John, Sam/Drew, Sam/Dante (even though Sam/John technically weren't officially together, they generated more heat than Sam/Silas, which Frank was trying to use Sam to push Silas)

Someone mentioned that Giovanni's Mazza auditioned for Spencer recast in the last thread. Technically, he was under consideration for Spencer after originally auditioning for presumably Aiden, yet deemed too old to play a 15 year old and too young to play Spencer (for the official auditions for Spencer were apparently called off) so Giovanni Cerullo, then changed to Giovanni Palmieri, was specifically designed for him, within a two week time frame.

Wow! They had some new photos in the opening today. About half of them were new. The others we've seen before.

They new ones look like they were AI generated. Maybe they're just severely airbrushed, but the subjects of these new photos somehow don't quite human. The subjects look a bit too perfect, which makes them seem like they were AI generated or at least AI enhanced.

*Marcus Coloma was Maura's strongest recommendation (also one of, if not the best kisser according to her, out of all the guys who auditioned for Nikolas) though it was ultimately Frank who made the final decision, I should say at R64. Similarly to how Maurice picked Tamara Braun as his strongest recommendation when they were auditioning for Carly's after Sarah Brown quit, with Jill signing off on his top choice.

Marcus and Tamara are drastically different outcomes. I think TB is the superior Carly. Marcus was a miscasting from the start and what transpired after proved it.

As much as I want Laura to have all her kids on canvas, watching JJ's video about his comeback has deflated my expectations. Like David Tom of Y&R mentioned above, I don't think he will translate well as a middle-aged Lucky.

I don't know how old he is but he looks young and grimy (he should wash his hair) and I don't like his voice. Ending his video with "god bless" didn't endear him to me either.

I have a thing about voices and the voice will turn me off the to an actor/character despite any other redeeming qualities. I couldn't stand Marcus Coloma's voice, can't stand Michael Easton's voice, Sasha's voice is highly annoying (vocal fry and valley girl combo), Trina (raspy Rachael Ray voice) and I know she's beloved, but Kristina Wagner's voice is also annoying.

I keep looking at Cody and can't decide whether I think he's hot. When the actor was on OLTL, he was truly incandescent. It was hard not to take your eyes off of him. The eyes, the smile, the hair, the body. I realize that was a dozen years ago. Now I ask is that his real hair? It seems somehow unreal. His body is good, but a little strange. Of course, this part (Cody) is nothing compared to his role on OLTL, where he was a wonderful rascal. Cody is dull as dishwater, moping around about how unlovable he is. Give this character a scheme, a twist -- play up the actor's sense of mischief. Let Cody let loose!

R102 Cody is poorly written, whereas Cutter was a little more interesting; that could be why you can't decide. Remember he apologized for not being in ideal shape when coming onboard, which was sweet of him. Better writing would more than likely turn everything around in his favor. Frank hired him on a whim, after Josh contacted him for work, though the writers have had more than enough time to figure him out. The problem is that they started him off as a schemer then softened him up.

Poor Dan Gauthier was a victim of the "Luke Complex" -- the decision by soap producers that only bad boys were appealing to their female demographic (Luke, Todd, Sonny, etc.). This process yielded the worst decision in soap history, which was to make a mob boss the main character of GH. At least Luke was self-hating -- that's the quality that made him appealing -- whereas the character of Sonny is just a poor one-dimensional rip-off of The Godfather. And don't get me started on Jason who, as I have claimed before, belongs to a comic book universe rather than a soap opera universe.

Dan was hands down the best Kevin. A worthy successor to Clint Buchanan.

But OLTL couldn't leave well enough alone in those days.

I think as a longtime viewer (since 1990), I'm more frustrated with what feels like a lack of an "endgame" for ANY of the characters. I have no idea what anyone wants or who they are anymore. I'm shocked at what they've turned Sam into, for example. That just kills me (much like Edge Jerome killed me at Body Heat).

While I'm not an Easton fan and am glad to see him go, this alcoholism story feels so rushed.

The only killed off Gregory five weeks ago. Sure, death of a loved one is a common reason why people fall off the wagon. It happens all too often.

But alcohol was not Finn's drug of choice. For him to have fallen so far so quickly on a drug that he hadn't previously been abusing seems wrong. I not saying he wouldn't have gotten to the point where he would cut himself and pass out on the floor, but in real life it would likely take a little bit longer time to happen.

Of course, this is soap opera land. Let's not forget a couple of years ago, Steffy Forester on B&B got addicted to pills and sent off to rehab in a mere three weeks.

She popped back on for some guest spots for the 30th anniversary; Doug Marland, the writer, brought her back full time and built up to another Kim/Susan feud. This time over Bob. After Kim found out that Bob and Susan had had sex she snarked at Bob: "She's been waiting for YEARS to get back at me over Dan [past love interest] and by God, she did it!" (something like that).

THAT"S how you use a character from the past in today's story.

Yes R176. Writers used to have a better sense - and perhaps more freedom - to rotate characters a bit. They could recognize when a character needed a rest and rotate the chess pieces on the board.

These days it's rarely about that and more about feeding fanbases or getting whoever they can afford. Rarely do they do anything as organic as looking at the whole canvas.

I suppose there could be interesting story with Lucky if they actually redeemed some of the terrible stuff they've done to Liz in the last dozen or so years, if he is there to help Laura and Lulu and deal with his new uncles.

It's just that GH gets temporarily interested in any new story for maybe a month or two until Mo and Snags stomp their hooves, and the show lurches back to focus on them, while everything else is relegated to the background.

Dropping Maura West is such a bad, short-sighted move. She’s one of the few characters who can actually stir the pot. Half evil, half sympathetic, with a wavering sense of morality. I always found Jonathan Jackson’s Lucky to be a whimpering, simpering mess. If they drop Maura for him, they’re making a very silly mistake. When do Mulcahey’s stories stop airing? It can’t be soon enough! The show was really tanked with him there. Dull, boring, lifeless. No wonder the ratings dropped like a bomb since he’s been there.

Cameron Mathison sure looks great without his shirt off. He had a cancer battle in 2019 but seems to be doing just fine. A little chest hair would be nice but I think he's naturally hairless.

R285, Gloria Monty killing off Diana was a bad move I think. There could have been some great story for at least a year of Jeff battling Diana for custody of Steven Lars, since, at the time of Diana's death everyone knew P.J. was Steven Lars.

The story is also a great example of how messy backstage shenanigans can influence the show. Pre-cobalt poisoned Heather WAS suppose to be the killer, but Gloria changed her mind mid stream and had to invent scenes that never happened. Alice would never have shot Diana!

I think it was accelerated because Ricky Dean was leaving but for crying out loud Diana was a NURSE at and on General Hospital. Keep her!

I also wouldn't have lost Susan; as Jason's mother there were opportunities for years of conflict with Monica.

In my humble opinion, Giddens has limited talents and goes for warmed over 80s Dynasty sort of content.

He certainly has accomplished a lot and should be applauded for elevating from his days as a podcaster and fan to where he is now. But I don't find his work very compelling. It's riddled with cliches. I suppose it isn't antihero BS with mobsters and killers so that's one silver lining.

The Guza era having a "gangster of the week" theme is also a perfect way to describe it. Frons and Phelps practically let Guza get away with almost everything he wanted, which trickled down to most of the actors having their way as well.

Viki being around to confront Irene, particularly the same Viki from Irene's original run, helped out a great deal. Real seems to usually have his ups and downs, as many addicts unfortunately do. Side note: Wendy Riche has barely aged since she left GH. There were even mentions of her willing to return years ago, yet they weren't willing to part with Frank.

R468 Becky actually was on the chopping block, around the time Korte/Mulcahey first started together; Korte can't stand Liz, so she had a lot to do with cutting Liz out of scenes with Jason, while she also gutted Mulcahey's big coming out story for Aiden (the scenes where Aiden, with Liz, came out to Grandma Laura were filmed with the previous Aiden, then cut) until everything switched to MW being targeted as the next one out (Mulcahey advocated for MW to stay; apparently he wanted Becky to stay as well).

With Lucky coming back- Jonathan is supposed to start filming in August, pretty sure Becky's safe now. Aiden's coming out story will more than likely start up again, for Jonathan will need something to do, since he's favored over Becky, so they'll make the story more about him than her.

If an actor has a weekly guarantee of three episodes per week, with pay of $1000 per episode, they'll still get paid $3000 per week, even if they don't work a full three days that week. Whether they work one day, two days, three days, or absolutely not any days at all, they'll still get paid $3000 per week, during their contract cycle. What Frank likes to do is have the actors make up for their minimums, so if you don't see a particular actor/character for weeks on end, you'll start to see them all of a sudden more frequently, possibly three or four days in a week, to make up for when they were already paid. Some actors actually only have a guarantee of two episodes or one episode per week, so they're only guaranteed $2000 or $1000 a week. The $1000 per show is more along the lines of what rookies are paid; vets are obviously paid a little more, with the bigger names paid higher, though not nearly as much as they were paid decades ago. If an actor like Giovanni is working beyond their standard weekly guarantee, then he'll get paid extra/bonus money.

Also, Mulcahey's account of what happened obviously doesn't sit well with some, though that's what he told one of his friends.

r539 The thing is, NAC was exceptionally good as Spencer. He even won an Emmy on his very first time. Problem with recasting is that after having someone so perfect in the role, whoever they cast will be a let down.

I've been shot down here in the past when I've observed I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling from Genie Francis so it's good to hear not everyone is on the Genie is great bandwagon.

I get the feeling she has a lot of resentment and bitterness that she tries to keep in check but doesn't always succeed. Probably also keeps to herself when not complaining. If she didn't have the nice smile and nice hair she may not still be there.

I've mentioned before and been disagreed with, but I've not heard her co-stars rave about her personally. They say things like "Genie is a legend", "Genie is GH", "The Great Genie Francis" but never anything about her personally. JJ being the exception.

She does seem to be friends with NLG and showed up to NLG's charity drive at her house during the pandemic lockdown, she's in the video.

Speaking of JJ loving GF, I've noticed, to GH's credit, that the adult actors always seem to have nice, warm relationships with the child actors who play their kids. I've not noticed that with other soaps.

Genie and Tony with JJ, Finola and Tristan with Kimberly. JPS with Scarlett. Lisa Lo and Wally with Easton (Easton calls Lisa Mom), Michael Easton with Jophielle, Becky with all her "boys" and as much as it pains me to say it Mo and the Avery twins. I recall one of twins as a toddler blowing Mo kisses during a scene and him reciprocating. There are also videos of the Donna kid coming to set and excitedly looking for Mo to hug him.

When a young Danny was replaced and was upset, I recall Billy Miller and Kelly Monaco taking to social media to encourage him, tell him how great he was and offer him lifetime hugs or something along those lines. Very sweet.

The only actors I can remember going out of their way to praise Genie in recent years are the young adults: NAC, Tabyana, and Avery. I think she takes a mentor role with them, albeit in a more maternal, less aggressive way than Mo.

Who knows, maybe she thought they would beg her to stay, rewrite her storyline and find her a better pairing. Instead, they didn't, called her bluff and let her die as she requested. Frank is spiteful. I know the official statement is they "decided together" but that's just PR fluff. She was also able to save face at not being begged to stay by citing her long-distance relationship as a reason for leaving, relationship which is now over.

Didn't William de Vry also request his death be shown on screen so there was no doubt? He didn't request to leave but was angry that he was being written off so requested on the on-screen death. Harrington, James Patrick Stuart, Hudson West, Maura West all out, with Julie Marie Berman being courted back and Jack Burton, Steve Burton's real life son, auditioning as Jake Webber, for Hudson has outside projects that facilitated his exit. James Patrick Stuart has relocated to Oregon, though that's not a clear indication of him not staying on.

Also, a possible Jason/Carly/Brennan triangle is on the horizon, with a side of Anna/Brennan

Adam Harrington had great potential, he even teased Jagger's backstory while he's been gone all those years as being very interesting so they must have shared with him what they had planned for the character. R584 Don't be sorry for these are all just rumors for now, none are actually confirmed. Becky Herbst was rumored to be out months ago only for that to not occur. Michael Easton was referenced out as well, months before his actual exit; while that did happen, there are instances where TPTB change their minds.

R584 What happened with Adam J. Harrington is that he initially auditioned for another role ( for Brennan I believe) yet Mark Teschner felt he wasn't particularly right for that role. Mark believed Adam was charismatic enough to keep in mind, so after recommending him to Frank (which Teschner also did with Donnell Turner, Sofia Mattsson, Giovanni Mazza, etc.) Frank decided on recasting Jagger, after Antonio Sabato Jr. had pissed him off. It seems that the novelty factor might have worn off, then there's fans complaining about Harrington lacking chemistry with female co-stars, although the show has shown that they will keep certain actors on regardless if they're accepted by the fans or not. If anything, its more of a money/budget issue. MW being out is strictly budgetary as well.

Jack Burton auditioning wouldn't necessarily lead to him playing Jake, similarly to Joshua Benard apparently aiming for Spencer when NAC was hired, though it could lead to a minor role, like Joshua's Adam Wright.

James Patrick Stuart relocating to the Portland, Oregon is primarily because of his wife's business expanding to that area, though he's remained on recurring status, which he has preferred.

I hate to admit Adam's scenes yesterday with Ava didn't have any chemistry. Disappointing as he is good looking and a good actor.

Also, no heat when he was giving KeMo foot massages at the pool recently.

I guess they tried him with different actresses and have given up.

R595 Not necessarily. Mulcahey is obviously extremely unpopular here, but Mark Teschner and Frank are responsible for Giovanni. After auditioning for a 15 year old (assumingly Aiden) Mark submitted him to Frank, since there was something interesting about him. Teschner told Frank that he found this kid that was too old to play a young teen. Frank said to test him anyway, which led to Mulcahey having to create a character for him at Frank's request. That's how Giovanni Cerullo, then Giovanni Palmieri, was born

Sidenote: I don't think Katey MacMullen gets enough credit. I dislike the character, but the actress does a nice job with the emotional stuff like when she found out her baby died. She continues to take acting classes and I believe she told Steve & Brad she does local theater, so she's trying to hone her craft.

Holly Gagnier is actually Karen MacMullen’s acting coach.

She’s a lovely girl but they’ve had Willow on 24/7 since she started on the show. She was at her best with Swickard when Willow and Chase were paired. Duelly is a dud. I wish they’d recast and rehaul the character of Michael.
