DeSantis Vetoes All Arts Grants in Florida
Advocates say a Shakespearean tragedy is unfolding in Florida’s arts community after Gov. Ron DeSantis’ $32 million line-item vetoes left nothing for the arts.
“The veto of all cultural and museum grants from the budget is unprecedented,” said Carlos Guillermo Smith, a former Orlando Representative who was just elected to the Senate. “I’m not aware of any Governor who has ever vetoed that line item because of how devastating it would be to the hundreds of organizations who rely on that funding. It’s never happened.”
Florida Politics reached out to the Governor’s Office for comment to understand DeSantis’ rationale for stripping out $26 million for cultural and museum grants and $6 million for cultural facilities. The art funding cuts are part of nearly $900 million in vetoes for the nearly $117 billion budget.
“The governor reviews every bill and appropriation that comes across his desk and uses his authority under the Florida Constitution to make veto decisions that are in the best interest of the State of Florida,” DeSantis’ Deputy Press Secretary Julia Friedland said, reissuing a statement given to media previously.
Normally, arts funding cuts happen during bad economic times, which makes it unusual in this relatively good year, said University of Central Florida political science associate professor Aubrey Jewett.

I'm afraid the arts will not be as revered in the 21st century as they were in the 20th, because it's become too associated with liberalism, which also thrived last century but is going out of style.

It’s because he spent so much of the state’s budget on his failed presidential campaign and his failed immigration policies have cost the state commerce as developers flee the state due to lack of cheap labor and no insurance. It’s easy to do the math.

R3, the budget was there and Florida’s economy is very good. This is payback. He hates the libs. It’s the same reason he went after Disney.

My God, even the old time ruthless dictators found money for the arts . What would Russia be without it's ballet

Actually I'd love to see the National Guard come in and drag his fat ass and Tacky Ho out of the Governor's Mansion 🙂

I used to care about the arts. I've been classically trained in an instrument, majored in music, had an affinity for writing short stories, and even drawing on occasion.
And then, adulthood sucked it right out of me. I feel like working to survive and pay bills has taken up all of my time away from what I used to enjoy (creating music, writing, art). The last time I can remember sincerely finding any joy out of creating something (music) was in 2009. I think I might be dead inside, now.
I'm sorry. What were we talking about?

Thanks for the fact check, R4. However, forecasts are qualified as “in the medium term.” And the economy there is based on immigration, tourism and construction - all of which are evolving variables. I don’t see how banning the arts does anything for tourism or development, frankly.
Every tax dollar spent on the arts returns 4 dollars. As you said, the motivation is clearly “get the libs”. Liberals tend to have more disposable income. Not sure how that helps him.

Wouldn’t it be nice, and appropriate, if “Art Basil” (the big, high end Miami art fair) announced it was canceling or relocating for next year (to San Juan, or the Virgin Islands, or even Atlanta.) in sympathy ?

The Ringling Museum is the nicest museum I've been to in FL. I've also been to the Dali and the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete.
I wonder how much $ they were getting from the state government? I'd bet a lot of money that they weren't getting that much in the first place.

R21, I don’t feel motivated to look it up, but I feel quite confident in telling you that no fine arts institution receives government grants that make up a significant portion of their operating budget. I would imagine grants to not exceed say 5% of an annual budget — but if someone else can confirm, facts do matter.
All this to say, even if I am totally wrong, I don’t give a shit, De Santis is disgustingly playing politics once again. He’s misusing his power as an employee of the taxpayers by wielding his power to harm political opponents. This is exactly what we *do not* want from any government worker, regardless of their party. Are the voters of Florida still clinging to this loser who has damaged their brand and reputation as a state? I’m embarrassed for anyone who lives there or owns property there.

There's always the one (r23) who has to remind us that THEY didn't vote for some creep, but the fact is many MILLIONS did and millions more stayed home!
See that's how elections generally work, and in De Santis' case it was a blowout, so Florida gets to fucking STEW in the results, you along with them!

[quote] She voiced a concern that DeSantis judged Fringe Festivals without ever attending one. Acts aren’t chosen to be provocative — and certainly they are not exclusively sexual. For Fringe Fort Myers, various artworks that struggle to find other avenues apply to be part of the festival and organizers draw the entries at random.
[quote] “It’s a dangerous assumption, and unless you have experienced it, how do you know what an arts festival is?” she said. “But also, if you don’t like a show, don’t go.”
[quote] That said, programming at festivals certainly includes controversial and risqué acts. Fringe Fort Myers featured a TransMasculine Cabaret and a show called “Cock Talk,” a male version of the “Vagina Monologues.” That said, it also included banjo performances and a family art lab.

Why can't this fucker just let people live their lives?

[quote] So, Trump couldn’t be a barber or cosmetologist in Florida, but sure let’s make his dumb ass president again.
[quote] Ask yourself why is this particular profession targeted? Because barber shops are hang out places for people of color, and DeSantis doesn't want people of color to gather together and socialize. He's afraid they might discuss politics, and organize themselves to vote. Is that it?
