Prices always seem robust in Australia and it seems it's been a sellers' market for a long time.

The price of the house doesn't surprise me, nor the speed with which it went under offer. The fact that it it has slovenly residents who didn't lift s finger to tidy up the dump...it only narrows the market and supremes the price to focus on flippers or buyers willing to brave s bit of renovation. The house doesn't appear in bad condition less the roof leak in one of the rooms. That a 30 year old shower door in a house lived in by people who don't clean has some mold on the silicone caulking isn't a big surprise - nor any harbinger of a house full of deadly dark spores. The new owner will surely replace the bathtub glazing and probably make a good number of other updates.

It seems shocking to many people that not every house is lived in by house-proud owners who keep everything in perfect condition and staged to within a centimeter of its life to draw a top price.

Reduce the AUD asking price by a third for the USD equivalent, so selling for about $385,000.

Allegedly the neighborhood's not too dodgy and gentrifying quickly. My guess is it's an easy flip to make money.

OTOH, Perth is a long, long way from anywhere.

Fastest growing (Australian) capital city, apparently. Its remoteness is somewhat offset by the sheer number of people living there, in my view. Yeah, it's expensive to travel in just about any direction, but I'm sure there's lots of stuff to do there.

R7, aside from beaches - wear a wetsuit in winter if surfing, don't go in the water is whales are migrating nearby as they attract sharks - there is fuck all to do apart from walking and cycling.

Culturally, Perth is several levels below - and decades behind - Sydney and Melbourne.

Being so spread out, and with the most popular (shittiest) media outlets dominated by a conservative press baron, it's just an oversized country town.

Melbourne and Sydney were settled earlier, have long had a higher density, and have crucially had the advantage of so many years of Fairfax newspapers: The Sydney Moning Herald in NSW and The Age in Victoria. Unfortunately, our previous PM - the religious nutter - allowed Fairfax to be sold to yet another conservative, mainstream news company. However it still retains a glimmer of its previous magic.

NSW had a lot of their train lines down by the 1860s, whereas Perth didn't even start until decades later. We still can't match what Sydney had in the 1860s in terms of commuter train services. There was an extensive regional freight rail network, but most of that is now out of use, leaving the roads from the Wheatbelt full of trucks during harvesting as they struggle to get the grain to ports for exporting.

It's a dumb, conservative city with most people resistantto change. If not for my health, I'd have left decades ago. Our next home will be in the inner-city.

If you have the chance to come to Australia, go to Sydney or Melbourne.

R8, my friends in Perth tell me it's the way they imagined LA would be based on descriptions given by people who had never been there. The difference is you go to LA and realize it's packed with things to do and see. Perth really is a giant blank page. Personally I find that also exciting, for different reasons - but if there's resistance towards creating a new environment...

Obviously, the buyer can see through the clutter and image its potential.

That’s how I got my first house. It was so bad, the bay window in the front had a side sliding window where drug transactions took place… but the house had solid bones and was in a gentrifying area.

I made minor updates and sold it for twice what I paid for it.

R15 and R17 are right, this is all fairly fixable and fairly cheaply if you're prepared to do much of the work yourself

Its a pity it is intrinsically so ugly to start with, that isnt so easy to fix

I'd rather spend more and get something that can be made really beautiful like this

Asking price AUD $500K, sold for AUD $600K.

R10, I've never been to Brisbane, however I was somehow convinced by a friend to swing by the Gold Coast for a week on my way to Sydney. I used to go to Sydney a lot.

That experience put me off Queensland for life.

I have been to Adelaide. Adelaide's biggest draw to me is that it is closer to Sydney and Melbourne than Perth is. Same for Brisbane.

Perth is the opposite side of Australia from Tweed Heads which is the place that was the filming location of Porpoise Spit, and a few hundred kms further South. Tweed Heads is just South of Brisbane by about 100 km or so, and 820 km North of Sydney

You get over-priced garbage.

They buy up everything and then drive up prices.

Compare real estate markets where foreigners are NOT allowed to buy up your country, versus real estate markets where they are allowed to buy up everything.

This is why the US, Camada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand cannot afford their own real estate any more.

STOP FOREIGN OWNERSHIP OF REAL ESTATE!
