There are at least 100 different chemo drugs and infusions. We can't know what her treatment is as we don't know the type and stage of illness she has. The infusion phase can last from one to five days and is then followed post-chemo by a period of weakness and side effects, generally as long as the first phase. Patients feel better toward the end of the cycle before the next infusion. Hence, good days and bad days.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 14, 2024 6:15 PM |
R3 Preventative chemo treatments can often last for six months or so. Given she seems to have started her treatments in March, it's likely they will continue throughout the summer. If she's still receiving treatment in the fall, than it's something more serious.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 14, 2024 6:16 PM |
Saying she’s not out of the woods, doesn’t mean she’s dying. She’ll have a while to wait until she’s cancer free. I suspect she meant that as an explanation why she’s not able to return fully to public life. For one thing, her immune system is shot while on chemo. Being in public is dangerous.
Actually, I suspect Charles is sicker than reported and he’s said, fuck it! I’m going to king it up while I still can.
Anyway, both have managed their terrible year with a lot of grace.
Rooting for them both and hope other people struggling with cancer take some comfort that they’re raising awareness for the disease and impact of treatment.

There was an oncologist on CNN awhile ago who said that preventative chemotherapy - and she used the disputed term preventative, so that was interesting - is done after a primary cancer is removed surgically, to reduce the risk that minute cells could have spread. Kate said herself the cancer was found unexpectedly and after her initial abdominal surgery. So there's no basis to assume she's not responding to chemo because the chemo is an end in itself - preventative rather than curative.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 14, 2024 7:10 PM |

I’ve been on chemo for four long years and never lost my hair, other than maybe just a bit thinner. It’s surprisingly rare to see completely bald patients in the chemo ward, I think treatments must have changed quite a bit over the years.
The fatigue can be the worst thing of all, and it can stay with people months, even years after treatment ends.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 14, 2024 7:23 PM |
The original announcement said she would resume public duties after Easter. That she remains out of the public eye and is taking one day at a time sounds a bit ominous (and yes, royally vague) to me.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 14, 2024 7:23 PM |
But Kate HAS to be wearing a wig, don't you see?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 14, 2024 7:24 PM |
R55, depends on the cycle. If she started in March and the regime.
"When cure is the treatment goal. Adjuvant chemotherapy (therapy after surgery has removed all visible cancer) may last 4-6 months. Adjuvant chemotherapy is common in cancers of the breast and colon."
Four months would take her to June, six to August. I can't recall if she said she'd started in her remarks or if it got released (if at all) but if she started late February, six months would take her to July.
I'm taking an optimistic view that because she's going to the Trooping and because William was an usher at the Duke of Westminster, she's actually doing well (for someone exhausted by chemo and the physical and emotional ups and downs.) I don't think they'd take either step if she was unwell or worse. It raises expectations that have no need of being raised.

She’s making her first public appearance nearly 3 months after she was set to return to public life (6 months since her last appearance). A heavily-edited, well-lit photo doesn’t obscure what we know to be true: She’s in bad shape.
I won’t be surprised when she pulls out of the appearance tomorrow (or requests not to participate in any public portions of the pomp and circumstance).
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 14, 2024 7:50 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 63 | June 14, 2024 7:51 PM |
R54 My sister also had chemo for cancer and did not loose her hair. There's still an automatic association that chemo=hair loss which is no longer the case for many chemo treatments. Chemo meds have changed and more targeted treatment options also reduce the amount of side effects. If Catherine were being treated for something like breast cancer, then yes, that type of chemo would see major hair loss. Charles, who is also undergoing chemo has also not had significant hair loss (granted he was going bald). I suspect many people commenting on Catherine's appearance and her treatment are "desktop experts."

I honestly do not understand all the antipathy for Kate or Meghan. We don't know what either of them are really like, only what the tabloids tell us, in order to increase their sales. I'm sure, like all of us, each is a blend of traits: kind, considerate, calculating, and selfish, generous and petty. I love to read biographies of all types, What always strikes me is how every subject, no matter how noble and inspiring, inevitably indulges in some startling, inexplicably ugly behavior that, I suppose, is both disillusioning and confirmation of their humanity. I think we should reserve our condemnation for individuals like Trump and Putin, who are proven to be irredeemably awful.

R71 people with very little in their lives have made a sport of Kate’s illness and some of them really won’t give up until they get their wish and she dies. Then there will be speculation about the Sussexes’ attendance - will they or won’t they? Will Louis act up at the funeral and is this proof that he is mentally handicapped etc. It’s endless.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | June 14, 2024 9:18 PM |
The problem isn't even the antipathy or the unfounded speculation but that it's all conceived and expressed without any wit.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 14, 2024 9:28 PM |
Here’s what I suspect—the major surgery was to remove large cysts/tumors in her ovary. Pretty common in women. Post surgery they found cancer cells. Or maybe a colon resection with cancer cells post surgery. Now she’s being blasted with chemo. So, just 6 months ago, she had major surgery. And that was quickly followed with chemo.
All of that in 6 months while trying to keep her kids calm while the press was losing its fucking mind about her photoshopping a family photo and refusing to share her most personal/terrifying news with the public.
I don’t know whether this will kill her or not. I sure hope it doesn’t because she seems like a good person. She’s certainly raising those kids well and I deeply appreciate her attempts to color coordinate her family’s when they’re in public. It’s adorable.
I don’t care that she’s a princess and incredibly pampered and privileged. No one deserves this type of bullying to reveal a serious medical condition. Let the poor girl be. We’ve got plenty of other healthy royals to besmirch.

I don’t think there is that much antipathy for Kate. I think there are a few instances and many accusations of it. For example, R70. Have there been a lot of suggestions that she shouldn’t reserve her energy for her kids? I haven’t seen any.
I have seen a lot of hate for Meghan. I’m not a fan of hers and she does seem to almost always do the wrong thing, but no matter what she does it’s treated as though it’s the worst thing anyone has ever done. Some of its been pretty bad, though. Ulvalde was awful, but at least one of the families seemed to appreciate her interest and sympathy. She’s not all bad, all the time. She’s just basic. She doesn’t see it.
And while I suspect Kate is very determined and fights like hell, I haven’t seen evidence of the “bravery” and “grace” that the media is attributing to her cancer battle. Because, rightly so, she hasn’t shared it.

Hah. I was thinking the same thing since this could be such a 'teachable moment' and all that crap, but the Royals can only be so human. Too human, as in picturing the tumors and their location, and they become so human that we wonder why are we waving at them and paying them to wave back?

R94, I've wondered the same thing. My best, non-professional hunch is that it's ovarian, and the BRF doesn't want us to know, because many people know that ovarian cancer is almost always diagnosed at Stage 4 and is therefore usually terminal. It's not quite the death sentence that other cancers are, but it's pretty close.
I hope it's uterine, Stage 1, which is totally and typically curable.

R105 The photo was taken by Matt Porteous on the grounds of Windsor earlier this week.
I suspect Kate (and the King) will disclose what kind of cancer they have only if/when they are declared cancer free by their doctors. They likely haven't announced the type of cancer because of the intrusive conversations it would cause (e.g. what stage, what's the survival rate). Your prognosis is not something you want being debated around the world while you're trying to deal with your condition, not to mention Kate has three young kids who are probably very worried.

She doesn’t look anywhere as bad as I was expecting. I suppose the only sign she’s ill is her weight…which isn’t too far off from the excessively thin look she adopted in 2011.
I like her dress…must’ve been inspired by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | June 15, 2024 10:52 AM |
She looks perfect - perfect in the sense that if she looked any better people would say “wtf have you been doing?” and if she looked any worse people would say “This is her goodbye.”
This is a beautiful course correction. I think now she can pop up intermittently while taking as much time off as she wants / needs. They really fucked this up in January through March.

To the handful of frau cunts who attempted to hijack this thread to lecture the “childless DLers,” fuck off and go back to Facebook. It goes without saying that she has 3 young children. Why would anyone need to type about THAT?
Everyone except Patsy Ramsey of Boulder hopes that she spends time with her children and survives.
This is a gay forum of pointless bitchery and the self-righteous parents still manage to show up here and insert themselves in the most obnoxious ways possible to remind everyone that they are morally superior. Nice try. We don’t buy your shaming bullshit.

Mary me if you must, but it’s lovely to see her back, with her children especially. As she got out of her carriage at Horseguards Parade, she made a point of thanking an officer giving the salute, and at the end, she and Charlotte made a point of trying to clear condensation from the carriage windows so the onlookers could see them waving.
Quiet consideration for others. It’s nice to have her back.

Ok, I'm among those who posted that she's circling the drain.
But now? I'm shifting from that suspicion.
She chose to wear white; on her first public appearance. That's an intriguing, confident choice. It's the opposite of funereal black (and we all know, in public appearances, the BRF never declares, they silently signal).
Her face looks slightly more plump, in a good way.

The white dress is a nice choice in and off itself and it reveals enough to demonstrate that she isn’t skeletal and there is no bag while possibly also making her look ever so slightly bigger. And having her and Charlotte so obviously coordinated de-emphasizes the possible motives for that choice. Can’t find anything to criticize here.

Look, with Mummy indisposed and Daddy being such a cold fish, someone has to hold this family together.
Louis is not much trouble. Just give him a horsey and lock him in his bedroom and he’ll keep himself amused for hours.
But Georgie requires a LOT of hand-holding. There’s a reason they’re not sending him to Eton. Some boys just aren’t cut out for the rough and tumble of a hypermasculine environment, if you catch my drift. At Marlborough, I’ll be there to make sure he’s getting along. He’ll continue to look to me for protection and guidance, just as he always has; just as he always will.

It's been reported that Kate has been walking the Palace gardens by herself, and singing this song to herself:
'This is it -

This is it -
Straight ahead, and rest assured, you can't be sure at all...
So while you're here, enjoy the view -

It’s extremely unlikely that she was diagnosed with cancer prior to Louis’s conception but it’s possible her original diagnosis was not in 2024. I suggested it in a previous thread last year somewhere around post 146 and was poo-pooed, but I think she has been ill for a while. So I don’t think you can conclude much from her current weight.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | June 15, 2024 3:29 PM |
She’s lovely and so are her kids. She’s clearly a good mom.
She is expert in her role. I have no idea what she’s like out of the public eye, but that just underscores how skilled she is in the role. She presents only what she wants the public to see.
She might be a complete monster behind the scenes but I highly doubt it. To my knowledge there have been no negative reports on her…other than she can be a bit lazy and she made Meghan cry.
Hope all the best of her and her family. And for anyone dealing with the misery of cancer.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | June 15, 2024 3:32 PM |
R171 I agree. She’s been unnaturally thin for many years. She either has superhuman willpower or something has been off with her digestive system for a while. As for a colonoscopy bag, these days it’s more like a discreet patch, but I highly doubt she’d be wearing white if she even had a patch bag. I think she’s worked for her attendance at this event for a while. Long enough for well placed fillers to settle so her face looks less gaunt.

R177 Sure, Kate has help, but it seems like she and William utilize the help for their most mundane tasks that suck up the time and energy of most parents. Their public interactions with the kids seem to support that they are genuinely close. Of course, Kate is human and I’m sure even pre-cancer she dumped the cranky babies on the nanny for an afternoon nap.

When you see her in motion, you can really see the weakness/frailty, but in her still shots she looks about as stunning as she ever has, which is quite surprising, especially since I'm fairly certain botox and fillers are not recommended during chemotherapy. She always looks the most beautiful/elegant with an updo and large hat. Suits her so much more than that basic bitch blowout she favors so much.

Just kidding--mostly. She did look wonderful today, but I wouldn't make any judgments about her health based on that. I think she was very carefully, fully, and expertly made up to give her a glowing, even skin tone, and it worked. Her face looked beautiful, almost more than ever. I can only imagine the pressure she felt to look well today.
I do hope she's not as ill as some here are prognosticating. Yes, I know she lives a very privileged life, etc., etc., but I like her, and she deserves a bit of good luck as much as any other cancer patient.

"Kate seems to have been selected for her role of princess because she was irreproachable: as painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character. She appears precision-made, machine-made, so different from Diana whose human awkwardness and emotional incontinence showed in her every gesture. Diana was capable of transforming herself from galumphing schoolgirl to ice queen, from wraith to Amazon. Kate seems capable of going from perfect bride to perfect mother, [to perfect cancer patient,] with no messy deviation."

I used to think that the interesting issue was whether we should have a monarchy or not. But now I think that question is rather like, should we have pandas or not? Our current royal family doesn’t have the difficulties in breeding that pandas do, but pandas and royal persons alike are expensive to conserve and ill-adapted to any modern environment. But aren’t they interesting? Aren’t they nice to look at? Some people find them endearing; some pity them for their precarious situation; everybody stares at them, and however airy the enclosure they inhabit, it’s still a cage.

Re: fillers and Botox on chemo patient. There isn’t a rule against it, so it’s up to each patient and doctor. Kate looks a little too full in the face for it to be natural considering how ill she has been. No one watch to see Kate with a skeletal face, so I think her team considered how heathy she would look played a bit part in her decision to appear today. I don’t think Kate is particularly vain, just very conscious of her public image.

"I inject the tissue of the fatal lamb
The formula's the one Somerset Maugham owns
Just a modest course of thirty-seven shots
You will be a heaving mass of hormones
No more crow's feet, no more flab
No more love handles to grab
You'll be so thin they'll all think you are
Walking sideways like a crab
Nothing sagging, nothing bagging
Nothing dragging on the floor
Of course, there's bound to be a little suffering
Eternal youth is worth a little suffering
Of course, there's bound to be a little suffering
Eternal youth is worth a little suffering
We have dry heat, we have steam
We have moisturizing cream
We have mud-packs. we have blood sacks
It's a rigorous regime
Not a wrinkle when you twinkle
Or a wobble when you walk
Of course, there's bound to be a little suffering
Eternal youth is worth a little suffering"

It's highly unlikely that Kate had any Botox or fillers while undergoing chemo not mention having just had abdominal surgery. You're not going to inject foreign substances in your body while your immune system is weakened.
I swear some of you think going through chemo and cancer treatment makes you shrivel into a raisin or something. The side effects of chemo are not what they were even twenty years ago. In many cases unless you actually know the person is undergoing treatment, you would never guess. The most common side effects are exhaustion and nauseousness.

Charles and Camilla are way above and beyond being "jealous" of anyone, unless it's to envy anonymity.
As for that pic at r237, my fun in observing and gossiping about the Royals is coming to my own interpretation of their silent gestures and statements.
For instance, I'm sure William releases a Father's Day pic every year, but with that one, I can't help but think of the absence of Harry from it, and if Harry now wants to try to match or exceed it with his own.

Poor Meghan. She has probably been waiting weeks to roll out her dog biscuits and jam but couldn’t for fear of doing it and then five minutes later comes the announcement that Kate is dead/in a coma/in Houston/whatever. So she waits and waits and confirms last minute, “She’s DEFINITELY doing it, right? She’s going to show up?” And she thinks she is safe and she unveils her products and avoids criticism, but nobody notices at all.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | June 16, 2024 12:06 PM |
I see a message in the photo. A man with affection in his heart, but held back by the demands of his role (the suit) who is only able to tentatively engage with a foot on the ball and a child who doesn’t realize it yet. And I’m a pretty insensitive person, so if I see it, it’s there?
I don’t think it’s meant as a dig, I think it’s meant as an acknowledgement. Whether William has been stepping out on Kate or not, this past year has probably been exceptionally hard on him. There’s no way he hasn’t been looking back in his childhood and the loss of his mother.

Look at most of the real aristocratic women in the UK. Very few of them fuck with their faces. Camilla does nothing. Anne does nothing. Sarah Armstrong Jones does nothing. Camilla gets bee venom facials, but plainly no work. Kate will probably go the same route. Look at Carol Middleton. If there's been work, not much. Kate's always had a chunky face with very distinct zones. Very big, prominent cheeks, in particular, a prominent forehead and a big, strong jawline. She looks entirely normal to me and like herself as she always has. Those women don't fuck with their faces, they wrinkle and sag and shrug their shoulders. It's confidence of that world. They probably mock women who have visible work done.

[quote]I am currently in remission and have never heard a doctor use the term 'cancer-free'. There's no real way to determine whether someone is 100 percent free of cancer, and there's always a risk of recurrence. 'No evidence of disease' (NED or NEOD) seems to be the preferred term.
R222, this is so very true. Many questioned celebrities Suzanne Sommers and Olivia Newton-John when they publicly declared themselves as 'cancer free' over the years. It's a positive interpretation, and encouraging to their public. Yet the truth is, you're never cancer-free, as you point out - there's no way of determining someone is 100% cancer free. It is indeed misleading.
I wish you well on your journey.
by Anonymous | reply 250 | June 16, 2024 3:20 PM |
I'm not sure it's a better idea to keep the type of cancer a secret. But I guess with the young children, it may be better. The press, their school mates' family, would be talking about prognoses and all that.
At least they revealed it was "abdominal" surgery. So ovarian, bowel, liver, or the dreaded pancreatic or stomach cancer, I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | June 16, 2024 3:32 PM |
Very unlikely they'd find pancreatic cancer by accident following another operation. The pancreas is a discrete organ and is tucked away under several others, which is why scans rarely pick up cancer in it till it's late in the day. It is much more likely to have been bowel surgery, probably resulting from one of the ulcerative bowel diseases, and the routine testing of removed tissue unexpectedly showed cancer amid the ulcerations.

One of the factors responsible for Prince Andrew was his status as his mother's favorite, R269. On the day of Catherine's comeback at Trooping, Nacho posted a photo of a very "skinny" black and white dog. That can't just be a coincidence.
There are also photos of Blake Lively socializing with Nacho and his wife so that explains Blake's dig at Catherine at the beginning of Catherine's illness. Blake is part of that group.

Blowing a raspberry to the "skinny" white bitch (the skinny white dog). Also, the "2 of 2" designation on the jar of raspberries, does that mean raspberries to both William and Catherine (two)?
Nacho, who is in Florida, posted the photo at 5:00 a.m on the day of Trooping the Color, that's 30 minutes before Trooping started in the UK. Was he really up at 5:00 a.m. posting photos of jam and dogs and biscuits or was this Cruella de Markle's machination with Nacho's blessing?

Can you seriously, though, imagine the disorder afflicting R321? She is so invested in Meghan Markle that she comes here anyway, to incessantly go low and demean someone she doesn't know, who to all appearances is doing a diligent, sincere job and who is presently suffering from cancer? She tells lies and casts aspersions without any credibility. What is wrong with that person to imagine that coming to another board to spew discharge like that accomplishes anything? Is racism so bad in the US and the UK that it's twisted R321's mind and soul to the point this is some kind of keyboard reparation? I think this is a very apt description of the majority view, but I’ve seen some posters who are ridiculously eager to find fault with Meghan. And I’ve seen posters (maybe the same?) who act like pointing out that a woman who is now known to have cancer has been very obviously augmenting her hair with extensions and wigs is engaging in ridiculous conspiracy theories.
Also, I’m not sure how diligent Kate is. She doesn’t seem to work all that hard. Between tough pregnancies and possibly being ill for quite some time I suspect she has justification for a light schedule, but there is no evidence that she a diligent. Because she wasn’t working her ass off prior to her marriage, either. Nor is there any proof that she is brave or compassionate. Doesn’t mean she isn’t. She dresses appropriately and has stopped flashing her ass. She is either an attentive mother or fakes it well. She is very good at being thin and maintaining mystery around her real personality and beliefs. Both of those are impressive.
The PR earlier this year was really awful, which is why I was sure she was dying once the video was released. That was the only explanation I could figure out for why they were willing to lie so obviously. The situation was just so extreme they didn’t care. The whole situation is fascinating because it has been so mishandled. Anything is possible.

[quote]Does Edina Monsoon handle the PR for the Royal Family? Stunning how inept the PR has been on this.
If this had been handled properly, Kate's illness could have been a bully pulpit of advocacy and support for Britons who are battling cancer along with their friends and family. She could have had a social media campaign that required minimal participation on Kate's part to outreach and awareness about the disease.
Instead, we were given a ham-handed series of strange videos and bonkers messaging regarding Kate and her health. Rumours are born in that hothouse of misinformation.
This could have given the royals a boost in support and popularity. Instead, it has challenged the patience of the British people (many of whom have their own struggles of equal or greater challenge, and has given birth to conspiracy theories that will never die.
Not good PR, by any reasonable standard

R329. My comment was directed to the post about the PR being inept, not OP, so I’m not sure why you reference OP. Second, you continue to assert the PR has been horrible, but you can cite any ways in which it has been. There hasn’t been any erosion of support for the royal family as far as I know because of tte handling of the matter. Do you have any evidence that is has? The British public generally respect the royal family ‘s right to privacy and expect them to be discreet and somewhat remote. Do you have evidence that Catherine’s adherence to third policy is a cause of dissatisfaction with the British public she serves?
Of course, her condition has led to a lot of vile speculation, among stupid and foul people (many of them Americans) but if you think releasing her X-rays would stop that, you’re foolish.
For the reasons above it is highly relevant to ask f you are American. Your post assumes a narrow, biased, uninformed American view.

r328 and r330.
I don't have children, by choice. I'm the exact opposite from a "But... but... what about the children?" breeder Frau.
I've read a variation on your position that it should have been full disclosure, no holds barred, they blew the PR, Kate could be an advocate, blah, blah, blah.
I fully disagree with you.
And I write this as being 2nd to no one when it comes to immersing myself in, and posting about, all the latest gossip about the BRF, the Sussexes, whoever.
As soon as they announced Kate's surgery in January, I didn't want, require, yearn for, any more info than that.
And getting back to the children, this is their parent the world wants to know about and talk about.
Fuck that.
I totally understand why William and Kate needed to give themselves private space with their children so they can comprehend, in private, what is the situation with their mother.

The only wrong with the PR is it hasn't satisfied with ghoulish need that makes us stare at a traffic wreck when you pass it in the road. R330, is there anything to say Kate can't become "a bully pulpit of advocacy and support for Britons who are battling cancer along with their friends and family" once she's, you know, actually done chemo and perhaps... feels up to it? Is it OK she prioritizes her treatment, recovery and family or do we really need a live feed?
by Anonymous | reply 337 | June 19, 2024 2:19 PM |
The agreement, R328, was always that the Wales would be given the space to raise their young family, raising, ideally, happy, well adjusted supporters of the future kings. That got turned into lazy Kate by people with agendas.

“ I’m not privy to “agreements” made by the BRF, but she didn’t do a hell of a lot prior to having kids.”
So the story goes, QE II’s happiest memories are from the time when newly married and Philip still a serving officer in the Navy and they lived on Malta. She wanted something similar for Will and Kate. She was still hale and hearty, Charles was the heir and William was the heir to the heir. So why not dictate they could have their honeymoon cottage in Wales and make sure their marriage was solid. She also had the evidence of her three childrens’ divorces, especially Andrew’s which was mismanaged from the start. Should’ve worked, grew up together, but Fergie has said that in her first year of marriage, she saw her husband for less than 30 days total.
by Anonymous | reply 341 | June 19, 2024 2:51 PM |
When they were first married, the working Royal Family consisted of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, Camilla, Anne, Andrew, Edward, Sophie, the Kents, the Gloucesters, and Princess Alexandra. William, Kate and that other guy were given alot of leeway to live their young lives. William and Kate, at least, having. married around thirty, had fifty or sixty years of work ahead.
And a quick primer. They married in April 2011. They toured Canada in the summer of that year. He served as a search and rescue pilot during that time. She, oddly, lived with her husband where he did his work. She was pregnant by the late autumn of 2012 and we all know how well she was during that.
Sorry if she didn't do a hell of a lot in the eighteen months after her marriage.

[quote] Sorry if she didn't do a hell of a lot in the eighteen months after her marriage.
Or the preceding 30 years.
I like her and respect her, probably because she isn’t like me. She’s disciplined about her weight, she takes advice, she plays a long game, sees the big picture. I also appreciate that she isn’t attention-seeking and seems to a good mother. But I think throwing adjectives like diligent, brave, committed (not sure exactly which ones I’ve seen here) lacks justification. But they could be accurate.

by Anonymous | reply 349 | June 19, 2024 4:28 PM |
He looks fine.
Kate, before her marriage, no she wasn’t setting the world on fire with her ambition and work ethic. Her parents were wealthy and appeared to be okay with supporting her. Not an unheard of situation even in the US, see every twenty-something living in Manhattan with an apartment they couldn’t otherwise afford. But remember, Kate was already linked to William in college. It’s quite possible that working for her parents was the safest option to keep her name out of the gossip columns. If she had an ordinary job (she did have a couple outside jobs) and she messed up at work —like everyone does at some point—it would be headline news. Why put yourself through that?
When she and William broke up after several years, he was commitment shy and still had at least one other woman on the string, Kate just launched herself into a frenzy of don’t-need-him activity and it worked . They got back together after a few weeks and then the engagement was on.

I love Catherine, hate Meghan, so I am NOT trying to stir anything up, but, from the American Cancer Society:
Smoking is one of the most important risk factors for pancreatic cancer. The risk of getting pancreatic cancer is about twice as high among people who smoke compared to those who have never smoked. About 25% of pancreatic cancers are thought to be caused by cigarette smoking. Cigar smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco products also increase the risk. It’s never too late to stop smoking, since the risk of pancreatic cancer will drop once a person stops smoking. To learn more, see Can Pancreatic Cancer Be Prevented?

R350 Not only were they supporting her, they also paid for expensive orthodontic work seemingly without a blink and purchased a Chelsea house for her and Pippa. The Middleton finances have always been a bit of a mystery. I wonder if the younger kids were ever jealous of the support Kate received during the long wait? Of course, Pippa did alright in the end and nabbed a hubby that might not have looked at her without the future king and queen as his in-laws.

by Anonymous | reply 357 | June 19, 2024 7:50 PM |
The ring will revert back to William r357. To be used by one of his sons for their wives, or his daughter.
by Anonymous | reply 358 | June 19, 2024 8:07 PM |
R357, the ring now belongs to Catherine. It will go to whoever she wants to have it.
by Anonymous | reply 359 | June 19, 2024 8:13 PM |
Not really r359. It's a royal heirloom - it's Catherine's during her lifetime but guaranteed it reverts back to William and the Crown at her death (or a divorce, if that were to come about). It's not the typical engagement ring given out by non-royals, this one has special provenance. I'm sure Catherine had to sign off on this when she became engaged.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | June 19, 2024 8:44 PM |
It’s a private family heirloom. The Crown has zero claim.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | June 19, 2024 8:49 PM |
The ring (and the Cartier watch which Meghan now has) were Diana's personal possessions. They didn't belong to the Crown. Maybe Kate did sign a prenup agreeing to return the ring in case of divorce, but, really, who else but her own children would she give the ring to? Makes no sense to put it in a contract.
by Anonymous | reply 362 | June 19, 2024 8:52 PM |
So, just to recap... now she's got pancreatic cancer, which given The Trooping pictures she's absolutely rocking. Does she divorce William and hock the ring per the prenup before she dies or just dies and wills it to whoever? And are we certain extensions don't cause pancreatic cancer?
by Anonymous | reply 363 | June 19, 2024 9:22 PM |

Diana's sapphire engagement ring is now worth millions of dollars, many times more than it was worth when she was alive. It's one of the most famous and recognizable rings in the world. You can bet that Kate signed a strict agreement to return it to William in case of a split or her early death. There's no way she's keeping that, it has too much value and association with the BRF.
Agree with r383, William would definitely remarry if Kate passed away early.

If Kate dies, I doubt William remarries. And assuming Kate fully recovers, if she survives William, I doubt she remarries.
Why take on another marriage contract with all of its familial and financial headaches when you've fulfilled your duties in the only marriage that actually matters? That produced direct heirs to the throne?
Ya think the future, or crowned, King of the UK and Commonwealth Realms will have any obstacles to getting laid?
William strikes me as the type of heterosexual man that will go into a long-term relationship as widower, but won't have any hesitation making it clear that he has no intention of ever marrying again.
Yeah, I know. For whatever reasons that existed then, Charles and Camilla decided to marry.
That era is over.
I'm not a citizen of the UK. I'm just guessing.
It's hard for me to believe, however, that in this day and age the UK citizens would have any problem with William assuming the throne as a single, widowed father.

From a purely financial, legal and Royal standpoint, I still believe the heavier scale is avoiding a remarriage, no matter what stage of life he's in.
And a publicly acknowledged, long-time partner who he is committed to can be financially taken care of. If she had any smarts about her, she'd make sure (and, he'd make sure!) that's taken care of, money up-front or however their financial experts create whatever instrument that's needed.
I don't know. For all I know, he'd be sizing up his options at her funeral and be re-married in a couple of years after Kate's death.
But, I just think William is, ultimately, a practical guy. Hell, he may have already had a vasectomy. Look how long he took to marry in the first place.

It is ghoulish to directly discuss Kate's death (or that of anyone still living, imo), however I offer that the topic discussed here isn't specifically her death conditions, but the potential legalities of inheritance of well-known heirlooms in the event of. This is the BRF we discuss here, a lot, and there's a lot that isn't expressly known about these things so people are curious. As a public family, partially supported by public dollars, people will ask these questions.

William will remarry for sure. He can't be king with a girlfriend, can he? Hardly respectable. He needs a wife to keep him company at all the tedious functions and to take on some royal duties herself.

Not happening. Harry is the King's son and there's cancer in the family now. Charles and Wills might both die before George reaches 18.
by Anonymous | reply 443 | June 21, 2024 1:27 AM |
...and if that happens r443, Harry will have no role in the BRF either way. Catherine (if she's still with us) would be appointed Regent for her son. And if she is absent or no longer living, Great Aunt Anne or Great Uncle Edward will step in to fill in the void, until George reaches 18 or finished Uni (probably the latter scenario).

Once they knew the Queen had cancer, they should have kept those next in the line of succession away from her. Now Catherine has caught pancreatic cancer. (They should have been extra-cautious since she is a smoker.)
William could have taken over for Catherine, but now he has cancer too. That leaves Meghan next in the line of succession unless parliament acts quickly. I think we are witnessing the death throes of the British monarchy. . I’m not sure it will see 2025.

But but but R448 - Catherine flew straight back to her Houston cancer hospital after Trooping the Colour last weekend and was immediately hooked up again to her colostomy bag, dewigged and de-extensioned. The whole narrative of the drama with Harry is stale. Truly. Time moves on. I have been watching something I predicted a few years ago as it evolves, with the Tindals. And yes, I know Zara is Anne's daughter, blahblah blah. But in the past she has always eschewed being a prominent Royal, and was happy with her horses. She married her rugby guy and they have kids, they hang out at the pubs, they party and have fun. But now, she is all dressed up and she and her husband are featured everywhere. Their enthusiasm is barely concealed. He loves the spotlight, does Mr. Tundal. And don't tell me how the cousins are stepping up to help out. I know they are. But no one has "stepped up" with more glee than the Tindals.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | June 22, 2024 1:54 PM |
What are you on about, r477? Zara has always been around. She even competed in the Olympics, while Mike played rugby for England. If she was actually being pushed forward for a working royal role, which is what you seem to be implying, then she would have been on the balcony at last Sunday's Trooping of the Colour. Going to a Taylor Swift concert is not "stepping up" for royal duties. "Dressing up" is what you're supposed to do at Ascot, and she's been doing it all her life.
by Anonymous | reply 478 | June 22, 2024 2:16 PM |
[quote] . And don't tell me how the cousins are stepping up to help out. I know they are. But no one has "stepped up" with more glee than the Tindals.
Why shouldn’t they step up? Harry and Meghan chose to leave, and it has created a gap. Apart from William and Kate, the youngest working royal is now Sophie who is 60 next year. The King and Queen, the Kents and the Gloucesters are very old.
I’d bet on seeing more of all the cousins in a semi-official way for at least the next decade, until William’s own kids are old enough to take the spotlight. And Zara has always been close to William and pretty scandal-free. Most importantly, neither she nor any of her cousins have ever broken the bomds of loyalty which family members expect of one another.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | June 22, 2024 2:34 PM |
I tried to resist posting this but can't.
Those pix of William, the children, Swift and Kelce are a neon bright contrast to Markle receiving a "No" from Swift to interview her on Markle's now in demise Spotify pod cast.
And the Sussexes did attend Swift's show in California but didn't score a backstage pic with her because if they had, we'd have seen it posted by the Sussexes a long time ago.
For the millionth time, Could Have, Would Have, Should Have. If the Sussexes would've toughed it out, it would be them, either accompanying William or getting their own pic with Swift on a different night of her shows in London.
Swift's stardom is truly a thing to behold. And I write this as someone who rented the Eras concert for home viewing and still doesn't know what the fuss is about.
But, right now, her exospheric place in pop culture can't be denied.
As a Royal, William knows mere celebrity is beneath him; that Swift is Show-folk on a glorious run.
But that didn't stop him from seizing the opportunity to capture for his children and him a bit of her Swift's stardust.

R479, Zara and Mike will never be "working royals" in the way Edward and Sophie and the Kents and Gloucesters are. What they are an example of, however, is how you can still be a member of the royal family with your own public profile - even a "fun", cheeky profile - whilst at the same time securing your private life.

R453. In what universe is she a punchy writer?. Her idea of clever sarcasm is to write “Poor Charles!”
Her idea of research is to quote a notorious Sussex mouthpiece.
Her idea of critical thinking is to accept unthinkingly Scobie’s claim that there is only residence in the entire UK where Harry and Meghan are physically safe. Did that claim not seem a all bizarre to her?
Her idea of balance is to ignore the Sussex’s very bizarre and enormously filthy behaviour towards the royal family and the British public and to assume the King’s inability to see his grandchildren is due entirely to him
You can write “punchy” and intelligent criticisms of the royal family. For that you should read Christopher Hitchens, for example, and not this writer, who would be an embarrassment to most high school magazines

I agree. That’s the point I was making, and why I referred to them as “semi-official”. They will never have the formal position, but everyone knows who they are and who their relatives are. Doors will always be open to them, and business opportunities too, but they are wise enough to know that it is in their interests to be good team players too.
If the Sussexes had been more intelligent and less ego-driven, they would have emulated Harry’s cousins, and (at least pretended to) profess delight at being part of the pack of minor royals, able to pursue their own careers free of public duties, but with their own philanthropic interests.
Everyone would have known who Harry was, and their status as loved members of the RF for life would be assured. All they had to do was hide their resentment and appear to be happy people and there is not a boardroom or ballroom door which would have been closed to them on either side of the Atlantic.
Instead, they bombed their bridges as soon as they crossed them, and no longer seem too fascinating. How many people will be interested in them by the time George, Louis and Charlotte are out of their teens?
by Anonymous | reply 487 | June 22, 2024 3:42 PM |
Look at the pictures from Ascot. Everybody was there, everybody was smiling, everybody was hugging and kissing. Even Sarah Ferguson is back in the ranks. They are plainly a family who enjoys one another's company and, if you're not a petty, damaged, rivalrous malcontent, have no problem living within the rules. Even Andrew's daughters were there, happily, and if anybody has grounds for grievance or resentment, who better? They love their odious father, obviously, and yet are happily part of the wider family.
So the other challenge the exiles face is with each passing year, the rest of the family get used them not being a part of anything≥.

Zara and Mike, Sarah Chatto, they attend every royal event. Weddings, funerals, Jubilee celebrations, Christmas at Sandringham, summers at Balmoral, Ascot etc They have no official royal duties but are included in everything.
Harry and Meghan could have also had all of this if they had played it differently. I wonder if they regret doing what they did, it cannot be denied the rest of the family all seem to get on great these days, and they seem to be having a great time at these events.

R489 It's very interesting to see that the family really has united and become much more openly affectionate since H&M left. I think both the shock of Harry's betrayal, the death of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and then Charles' and Kate's cancer, has brought the family much closer together. Even Beatrice and Eugenie, who were allegedly closer to Harry than William, have come around.
I don't think Meghan is capable of regret and Harry probably too stupid and immature to get what he's done. I think it will only sink in for him if he and Meghan split. Of course, had Queen Elizabeth agreed to their half-in, half-out demands, there is no way H&M would've so openly trashed the family. As Samantha Cohen, the late Queen's former private secretary and then assistant to Meghan once said, Meghan and Harry have the maturity of teenagers.

by Anonymous | reply 493 | June 22, 2024 6:31 PM |
I hear you, R493, but I still think people as a rule like a happy ending. Now, the Brits are a particularly resentful culture, so maybe he is past hope. I certainly don't think he'll be restored the former affection, but I'm not unconvinced he can be restored to some extent. Not her.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | June 22, 2024 6:35 PM |
Nothing to do with being resentful, r494. It's simply that Harry has no place in British public life anymore and never will. You might find it hard to understand this, but royals aren't royal simply because of birth but also behaviour and showing the British people that they care about and want to serve us. Harry has done the opposite. He's also not needed in any way, so what's the point?
by Anonymous | reply 495 | June 22, 2024 7:19 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 497 | June 22, 2024 8:12 PM |
R493 Harry's public life is over. Even if he had been more amicable towards his family, Queen Elizabeth made it clear that once you're out, you're out. She gave H&M a year to change their minds (I actually think H&M thought it would be the royals that would change their minds and let them do the whole half-in/half-out thing). The moment that year was up and the late Queen cut the last ties with them, they did the Oprah interview. I think even if by some miracle Harry and William did reconcile (and that will only happen if Megz is out of the picture), he still won't be allowed to resume royal duties. The royals will not change course whatever happens down the road. If you want all the perks of being a royal, it comes with a life long commitment to public duties. If you say you don't want to do it any more, fine, but you're out for good.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | June 22, 2024 8:37 PM |

Even when (and I maintain it's not a matter of if) the Sussexes divorce, he's still out.

In fact, if he had any sense, he'd be thinking of filing before she does, while King Charles is still alive.

I think it is up to Chuck as to the status of his second son. Chuck can reinstate him to working Royal on both of their terms. It's not like Harry abdicated with a charter never to return, like The Duke of Windsor. Harry is in self exile unlike Uncle Andrew.

The royal family survived the departure (through death) of the Queen Mother, a beloved presence in British public life for almost 80 years and a link to the glory years of World War III. Harry was witness to her death and the continued popularity of the family in spite of it. Yet he and his deluded wife thought the family would collapse if deprived of Meghan’s presence so great was their supposed popularity and the goodwill established over her five or six dozen public appearances.

During the Blitz, where in 1940 alone London was bombed for 57 nights in a row, she and the King continued to live in London, and to visit people whose homes had just been shattered. You said M & H would go bankrupt and lose the Montecito house. They're still happily living in it.

Zara and Mike have stepped up…but not in the sense of wanting to be working royals. They both earn their living with lucrative media gigs and, in her case, endorsements. Ascot this year featured Zara in a daily parade of stylish outfits and professional hair and makeup. She found an ideal partner in Mike, as he loves the attention. They are also genuinely liked by William and Charles, so they may have a bit of leeway when it comes to cashing in on a royalty adjacent lifestyle. Eugene and her husband Jack would probably like to emulate them, but they do not appear as well liked (or trusted) by the family.

Sad Zara 'close to breaking up' with live-in boyfriend by RICHARD KAY, Daily Mail
Zara Phillips's relationship with jockey Richard Johnson is in trouble, it was feared last night.
Friends say the couple are on the verge of splitting up after a series of rows that have left Princess's Anne's daughter 'miserable'.
She has been spending more and more nights away from the £400,000 house they share in the Cotswolds, staying with a friend in a nearby village.
The arguments are believed to centre on what Zara sees as Johnson's determination to put his racing career first.
'She is very unhappy. She feels that with Richard racing comes first, second and third while she comes a poor fourth,' a friend of Zara's told the Daily Mail last night.
It is understood the romance was pushed off course in May at Zara's 21st birthday party, a lavish Windsor Castle ball at which the Queen was guest of honour.
Johnson is said to have arrived two and a half hours late, missing dinner completely, because of his riding commitments. Friends noticed that Zara was upset at his absence, not least because of how rude it seemed to her grandmother.
In recent weeks Johnson, 24, is said to have spent an increasing amount of time drinking with racing figures and other friends rather than being with Zara.
After the Grand National, in which he was beaten into second place, he is said to have gone out drinking with two girls. However, no third party is involved in their troubles.
A friend of Johnson's said: 'He always feels very much on the leash with Zara because of the royal connection. Is it any wonder he wants to let his hair down occasionally?'
Last weekend the strain on both was clear when they appeared at two charity polo matches.
At one stage as they watched play at the Beaufort ground in Gloucestershire, Johnson appeared to recoil from his girlfriend as she sought a consoling embrace. Twenty-four hours earlier the gulf was equally stark as they walked across the ground at Tidworth, Wiltshire, each in a world of their own.
The relationship, which started more than three years ago, has always been tempestuous.
Eighteen months ago, Zara embarrassed the Royal Family when police were called to a fracas involving the couple.
It was claimed that Johnson had dragged her out of a car and thrown her to the ground.
The pair were said to have kicked and punched each other, screaming insults before Johnson ran off in tears.
But they were soon reconciled. Last Christmas there was more controversy when they posed at home for Hello! magazine.
The spread, for which Johnson was paid around £125,000, confirmed that Zara, tenth in line to the throne, was living with her lover.
The magazine apparently had to give the untidy house a makeover before the cameras could start clicking.
The Royal Family has generally approved of the romance. In April, shortly after Zara had qualified as a sports masseuse, the Queen spoke proudly of how her granddaughter's skills had helped Johnson recover from a broken leg.
The jockey has been a frequent visitor to Gatcombe Park, Princess Anne's home, and Zara's father's farm nearby. Anne considers Johnson a calming influence on her headstrong daughter.
Zara, also, has dropped into Johnson's family home in Madley, Herefordshire.
Earlier this year friends were even talking of a possible engagement.
But last night Zara's friends said they believed the relationship was all but over.
'It a dream turned sour for Zara,' one told the Mail.
'She is unhappy and disappointed with his behaviour.'

Zara in brawl with boyfriend by LOUISA PRITCHARD, Mail on Sunday
Princess Anne was last night said to be shocked and furious after it was revealed that police had been called to an ugly late-night brawl between her daughter Zara and the teenager's boyfriend, Richard Johnson.
The Queen's eldest granddaughter was pulled from a car and thrown to the ground by National Hunt jockey Johnson and the couple were seen screaming, swearing, kicking and punching each other in a fracas which left 19-year-old Zara sobbing hysterically.
The astonishing scene - said to be a jealous row over Zara flirting with one of Mr Johnson's friends - took place outside the Gloucestershire home of jockey Warren Marston last Saturday.
It was witnessed by chauffeur Jeremy Hill, 26, who said: 'She [Zara] was doing as much as he was. They were kicking and hitting out at each other. Dickie [Richard] ripped her puffa as he tried to pull it off, there was a lot of screaming, he was swearing at her demanding his car keys.'
Zara and 22-year-old Mr Johnson, who have been together for nine months and spent a romantic holiday in Mustique, had spent the evening at Rosie O'Grady's pub in Oxford with Mr Johnson's friend Mr Marston, 28, and his girlfriend of six years, Kelly Lane.
The two jockeys both ride at the Ford Farm Racing Stables in the Cotswolds, although they compete for different people.
The four were collected by Mr Hill just after midnight and driven back to Bourton-on-the-Water in Mr Marston's black BMW.
But tempers flared when Mr Johnson and Miss Lane, 26, got out of the car while Zara, a talented horsewoman, stayed in the back seat to chat to Mr Marston.
Miss Lane, a fitness trainer in nearby Cheltenham, is understood to have playfully accused the young Royal of having a secret relationship with her boyfriend. The remark enraged Mr Johnson who pulled Zara out of the car and threw her to the ground.
Mr Hill, who has been driving for Mr Marston for a year, was reluctant to discuss the incident but admitted: 'Dickie suddenly ran over to the car, ripped Zara from the back and threw her to the floor. He was asking for his car keys but she wouldn't give them to him. He was swinging at her, she was crying hysterically and tears were running down her face. I think she was crying with the shock - it was out of the blue. I chucked him on the bonnet of the car to get him off her.'
The two couples then went into Mr Marston's house, but once inside, Mr Johnson, a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, turned on Zara again demanding his car keys. Her screams during the 25-minute fight alarmed neighbours in the quiet cul-de-sac so much that they called the police.
But before officers could reach the house, Mr Johnson stormed off and began walking the ten miles to his house in nearby Toddington. Zara, who first met the jump jockey in 1999 at the Gloucestershire stables owned by David Nicholson, a close friend of Princess Anne, jumped into his green Mercedes and raced after her boyfriend, along the country road near the spot where she crashed her £19,000 Land Rover last month.
Neighbours yesterday confirmed there had been a 'rumpus' outside Mr Marston's house. One, who did not want to be named, said: 'There was a hell of a row out there, there was a girl screaming at a bloke. Every time he went near her she screamed. There seemed to be a fight and the dustbin went flying. I don't think he was hitting her, she was hitting him more.
'Every time he went near her she'd let out a scream. He wasn't a big chap - not nearly as tall as Warren. I don't know who they were.
'The girl who was screaming was blonde, I couldn't see what she looked like. She was wearing a pullover and jeans. The man she was fighting with was very short. One chap went wandering off up the road and I called 999.'
Two officers from Stow-on-the-Wold police station arrived at Mr Marston's house at 1.30am. They left five minutes later after investigating reports of two couples arguing.

The articles at r534 and r536, from over 20 years ago, when Zara was still a teenager, show that she's always had the media after her, especially trying to get scandal stories on her private life, which were of no public interest at all. The idea that she's only now, in the past few years, been in the limelight is hilarious and very wide off the mark.
Yet, unlike a certain someone, she managed to ignore this intrusion and just get on with her life and now has a happy balance between her public appearances and her private life. It can be done!

It’s somewhat doubtful that Royal Ascot would be paying Zara Tindall appearance money R539, given that:
Ascot is owned by King Charles as monarch,
Zara Tindall is his niece,
She has attended Ascot all her adult life and;
It’s one of the high points of the British social calendar - nobody in the Royal Family needs to be paid appearance money to attend their (hence the “Royal”) event.
However you seem better informed, R539 - when were you last at Ascot? BTW it’s not pronounced “Ass-cott” - just a tip.

I’m sure that designers lend her outfits due to her high profile (quid pro quo, really) but that’s not the same as being paid cash (which I assume you meant with the £ above).
Nice try, though, R541.

Princess Anne is in hospital with minor injuries and concussion, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The Princess Royal is believed to have been injured by a horse while walking within the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening, leaving her with minor wounds to the head.
It is understood that the head injuries are consistent with a potential impact from a horse’s head or legs.
An ambulance treated her on the scene before she was transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for appropriate tests, treatment and observation.
Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery.
The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole Royal Family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to the Princess for a speedy recovery.
