Rachel Maddow fears becoming a Trump target

The MSNBC star on Monday debuted the second season of her acclaimed audio series, “Ultra.” Over eight episodes, the program is set to explore “an all-but-forgotten” true story from America’s post-World War II history that mirrors the frightening politics of our current moment. In fact, the show’s synopsis — which makes mention of a foreign influence operation, a “Hail Mary scheme to stop the counting of the Electoral College votes,” and the “fraying” line between “the violent ultra-right and mainstream American politics” — reads like a description of the 2024 political state of play.

We spoke with Maddow via email about the new season of “Ultra,” the 2024 campaign, and whether she fears she might be a target of Donald Trump’s wrath should he win a second term.

[quote] Trump and his allies are openly talking about weaponizing the government to seek revenge against critics in media and politics, with some of his extremist allies even talking about jailing their fellow Americans. You’re one of his most notable critics on television. Are you worried that you could be a target?

I’m worried about the country broadly if we put someone in power who is openly avowing that he plans to build camps to hold millions of people, and to “root out” what he’s described in subhuman terms as his “enemy from within.” Again, history is helpful here. He’s not joking when he says this stuff, and we’ve seen what happens when people take power proclaiming that kind of agenda.

I think there’s a little bit of head-in-the-sand complacency that Trump only intends to go after individual people he has already singled out. Do you really think he plans to stop at well-known liberals?

It also seems pretty clear that some people in politics might think they’ll be on the safe side — that they might even benefit from it — if they side with Trump. Ask Mike Pence about how that works out in the end.

When Trump invokes the Insurrection Act to deploy the U.S. military against civilians on his first day in office, do you think he then rescinds the order on day two?

For that matter, what convinces you that these massive camps he’s planning are only for migrants?

So, yes, I’m worried about me — but only as much as I’m worried about all of us.

Trump has never even mentioned her, has he? I always wondered what that was about.

by Anonymousreply 2June 12, 2024 5:33 PM

Oh look. Another Trump thread.

by Anonymousreply 3June 12, 2024 5:34 PM

This was an amazing read.

I love Rachel.

She is always spot-on.

by Anonymousreply 4June 12, 2024 5:35 PM

Oh look. Another idiot who can’t just scroll past threads that don’t interest them.

by Anonymousreply 5June 12, 2024 5:36 PM

She’s tiresome, and not half as interesting as she thinks she is.

If she were a true intellectual, she wouldn’t be slumming on basic cable.

by Anonymousreply 6June 12, 2024 5:37 PM

Not half as tiresome as you, R6. Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 9June 12, 2024 5:47 PM

Season one of Ultra was fascinating. Highly recommend it, if you haven’t listened to it yet.

These fascist fuckers keep coming back because we refuse to punish them for their treason. We’ve ALWAYS been afraid to punish traitors (the south after the Civil War, the fascists during and after WWI and WWII, trumptards).

Oh, sure, we may throw a few low level idiots in jail or fine them, but the ring leaders and planners ALWAYS skate, so they get more bold the next time.

We need to root out the high level traitors AND their money backers, strip them if their assets and throw them all in a military prison for life. Period. No parole, no outside communication.

Stop fucking around and bring the hammer down on these traitors, or they will keep trying.

Howard Fineman has died—now he was a real journalist. An excellent writer and storyteller.

I got to spend time with Howard and his wife on a couple of cruises. He had some fun, and cheeky, stories about Washington …including behind the scenes at the WH with George Sr and Barbara Bush.

She raises extremely valid points. Fascist -autocratic type dictators don't just magically appear overnight. The things planned and publicly announced by trump and maga world (ex. project 2025) are dictator 101 stuff. This is real and not hysterical hyperbole. You lgbt apologist for trump will make really good kapos until they no longer need you either.

by Anonymousreply 12June 12, 2024 5:57 PM

I totally agree, R12.

The people who think they're safe, are only safe... until they're not.

And with people like Trump, no one is ever safe.

Just look at all the people he has turned on. People who were extremely loyal to him.

He really doesn't give a shit. Again, you're only useful until you're no longer useful.

[QUOTE]If she were a true intellectual, she wouldn’t be slumming on basic cable.

Yes, correct, r6. True intellectuals don't reach out to average folks who are curious about examing current events from more critical and in-depth perspectives. Too real. And, even worse, actually: Too proletarian, basic, and common.

Instead, they prefer the ivory tower mode where only a pre-selected, highly exclusive group of "qualified" people, often very young and without life experience, flock to hear their dropped pearls of wisdom. And provide the "real intellectual" with unconditional positive regard.

by Anonymousreply 16June 12, 2024 10:26 PM

N.B. That’s not MSNBC’s demographic.

P.S. she’s there to make buck, just like the rest of us.

by Anonymousreply 17June 12, 2024 10:47 PM

Please, as if Trump were ever going to do anything to a neoliberal, pro-Military Industrial Complex sow like Rachel Maddow. Trump is part of the establishment and his policies favored the 1%, not to mention that he served the same masters that every other president has ever served. This pathetic bitch is just trying to stay relevant now that mainstream media is collapsing under the weight of its own corporate lies, and disingenuously pretending to be a political dissident (oh, my sides!) is the easiest way for her to achieve her objective.

by Anonymousreply 18June 12, 2024 10:52 PM

That wasn’t me ;)

by Anonymousreply 19June 12, 2024 10:54 PM

Troll harder, r18.

by Anonymousreply 20June 12, 2024 10:59 PM

R18, can we visit you at the prisoner camp? Just joking! We don’t give a shit about you.

by Anonymousreply 21June 12, 2024 11:06 PM

Guess what, R21? Rachel doesn't give a shit about you, either, and she'll gladly sell you by the inch as long as she gets to make money and stay in the spotlight. And if you think that Trump is going to be any worse than Biden, the Bushes, Reagan, the Clintons and Obama, you're downright delusional.

by Anonymousreply 22June 12, 2024 11:09 PM

Oh r22, I don’t care if Rachel gives a shit about me. But obviously you do. Still not visiting you in prison camp.

by Anonymousreply 23June 12, 2024 11:11 PM

Btw, a million dead Covid victims would beg to differ. R22.

by Anonymousreply 24June 12, 2024 11:14 PM

I like her but fear she preaches to the converted.

by Anonymousreply 25June 12, 2024 11:16 PM

There are some voters who are insane and believe stuff like this, but still, they’re actually allowed to vote like anyone else, so people like Maddow try to convince them to vote the way she wants them to by telling these fantasy stories.

by Anonymousreply 26June 12, 2024 11:17 PM

R25 yes—

by Anonymousreply 27June 12, 2024 11:18 PM

R26, have you actually listened to what Dump is saying? Do you doubt he’s a raving lunatic, wanna-be dictator? And you’re saying Rachel is spinning fantasy stories?

by Anonymousreply 28June 12, 2024 11:19 PM

I really can’t stand her. So glad she cut her show back to once a month.

by Anonymousreply 29June 12, 2024 11:22 PM

Trump could say he’s going to turn lead into gold and provide travel faster than the speed of light, but then rational people would have to look at what said and determine if it’s actually possible. Creating a dictatorship in America is literally impossible. Nothing he says is going to change that fact. People who say otherwise always skip over explaining how it would happen. Maybe he waves a magic wand? Sometimes people will make the vague suggestion that the military will somehow be used to make that happen, but again with no explanation of what magical power Trump would use to do that. Being commander-in-chief brings with it no power to create a military dictatorship or to use the military for any internal nefarious purpose.

The people who believe what Maddow says don’t ask “how”, because they’re happy with their beliefs being based on fantasy instead of cold hard facts.

by Anonymousreply 30June 12, 2024 11:31 PM

I hope Trumpf leaves that poor young man alone. He may have an unusual first name, like “a boy named Sue,” but that’s no reason to prosecute him.

by Anonymousreply 32June 12, 2024 11:35 PM

Do you honestly think that a republican Congress and conservative SC would really stand in the way of whatever Trump wanted to do?

by Anonymousreply 33June 12, 2024 11:40 PM

R30, Dump already said he’s going to fill his cabinet with sycophants. What you say may be true, but you don’t think he can still do tremendous damage to our democracy? Look what he almost accomplished Jan. 6. The only reason he failed was that the military leadership did not follow his wishes. He won’t make the same mistake again. You are really not getting it.

The Congress and Supreme Court could stand, sit, or run in circles and that still wouldn’t explain the mechanics of how the fantasy dictatorship would be accomplished.

by Anonymousreply 36June 12, 2024 11:44 PM

Military leadership will not follow his whims.

Political appointees will do his bidding,

by Anonymousreply 37June 12, 2024 11:45 PM

I knew one open liberal in the military and they raped her.

by Anonymousreply 38June 12, 2024 11:48 PM

…and who is at the top of the military chain, r37? Remember? Secretary of Defense? Secretaries of the Army, Navy etc.? (Hint—they’re all political appointees.) And who’s to say they won’t replace the hierarchy with their own like-minded followers? It won’t happen overnight but they have four fucking years to do it.

Again. You don’t get it. I hate to keep bringing up Jan.6, but let’s pretend that the National Guard wasn’t deployed that day. Are you sure everything would have been ok?

by Anonymousreply 39June 12, 2024 11:53 PM

Thing is, Dump and his Kkkristian Nationalist followers have told us what they’re going to do. Believe that they will do it by whatever means. Why even entertain voting for someone who says he will do what Dump promises to do?

by Anonymousreply 40June 12, 2024 11:56 PM

R37 is a trumptard.

Block the dumb cunt. She won’t believe she’s in danger until they’re dragging her off to the camps, and even then she’ll refuse to believe what’s right in front of her fucking face.

The Defense Dept. was a valuable safeguard during Trump’s term.

by Anonymousreply 42June 12, 2024 11:57 PM

R30 could use a few hours of study on the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany once he became Chancellor. His ascent was all done legally. Easy, peasy , just change the rules , laws and you will be amazed at what can be accomplished. These fools who think it is impossible or “it can’t happen here’ should die in a grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 49June 13, 2024 12:18 AM

[quote]These fascist fuckers keep coming back because we refuse to punish them for their treason.

Sedition and treason are apparently both extremely difficult to convict in court.

The sedition case Rachel discusses in "Ultra" was a shitshow - textbook case of why courts should never try an entire group together.

by Anonymousreply 50June 13, 2024 12:23 AM

[quote] Easy, peasy , just change the rules , laws and you will be amazed at what can be accomplished.

This is the kind of answer you’d expect from someone in elementary or middle school for answering how to accomplish the enormous task of overthrowing or changing the U.S. federal government. Some unspecified “rules” and “laws” would be changed somehow, and then the magic spell kicks and the government is transformed like something from a kid’s cartoon.

by Anonymousreply 51June 13, 2024 1:14 AM

I’m not OP r51, but you should look up Project 2025, which is the Repuke plan to change the rules and change the laws. They’ve told us they plan to do it. Again, what do you not understand?

by Anonymousreply 52June 13, 2024 1:18 AM

Are you a fool, trumptard or just a goddamned idiot, r51? We’ve explained to your dumb ass several times how this harms and given an example of Hitler in Germany taking over the government LEGALLY, and yet you still refuse to pay attention?

Why don’t you just shove a watermelon up your ass and let the adults talk? You’re just going to keep repeating the same dumb shit over and over with your pin head stick in the sand .

by Anonymousreply 54June 13, 2024 1:30 AM

R53, If the question were how to take over the government in Germany as it existed in 1933, you could claim you gave an answer. You didn’t explain how the U.S. federal government could be transformed into a dictatorship. There’s no similar path in the U.S. to get there.

by Anonymousreply 60June 13, 2024 1:55 AM

Trump and his enablers are telling us --over and over-- what they've got planned. There's even a power point presentation. AP News reported on, with a response (a freaking quote for the morons), from a rep from The Heritage Foundation, who are architects of Project 2025, admitting that it was the plan and they would not stop, they would have to be stopped.

The unlubed dick is at the rim of your hole, dimwits. When their syphilic, wart encrusted peen rapes you, you can't pretend it was "surprise anal". They told you they were going to shove it in. Without lube. That they had multiple STIs.

Some of you are beyond stupid.

by Anonymousreply 61June 13, 2024 2:22 AM

The most important thing she said is getting lost.

“What makes you think they’ll stop with immigrants with the camps they build.”

This is the truest thing.

Any country that has ever built concentration camps never stop once the original target has been captured.

Never.

by Anonymousreply 62June 13, 2024 2:34 AM

This has been the plan all along. Walking herpes sore Steve Bannon made it crystal clear in 2016 that their goal was to dismantle the US government and retool it to their liking.

by Anonymousreply 63June 13, 2024 2:36 AM

The only thing that tells me -- and it is a relief, frankly -- is that we have been through this sort of thing before and survived. And that we can do it again.

But we are probably still all fucked for the remainder of our productive lifetimes.

by Anonymousreply 64June 13, 2024 2:38 AM

American Democracy is the "nonsense" that Margaret Ann Alito was alluding to, when she stated she would be relieved when her husband would soon be done with.

Not being a SCOTUS.

But, having to "put up with" this America. Our America. Democracy. That's what she and her ilk consider "nonsense".

Us. Who we love. What we've worked for. Our dreams. Our lives.

by Anonymousreply 65June 13, 2024 2:45 AM

That's a fucking scary thought, R65.

Terrifying, actually.

But I believe it 100% because that's what Republicans have wanted for the past 75 years.

[quote] What makes you think they’ll stop with immigrants with the camps they build.

Having any king of temporary holding facility would only be required if people try to use the legal system to delay the repatriation of illegals. It’s to everyone’s advantage to get illegals back over the border as soon as possible after they are caught. People want to remove illegals, not just shift them to another location still within the U.S. and pay to house them there. If people don’t want camps, don’t impede the repatriation process.

by Anonymousreply 68June 13, 2024 4:15 AM

I don't live in the US, but I watch MSNBC and I fear for her. I do think she'll be among the first targeted after the coup, and I hope she gets out in time.

[quote] The Congress and Supreme Court could stand, sit, or run in circles and that still wouldn’t explain the mechanics of how the fantasy dictatorship would be accomplished.

Veteran media reporter Brian Stelter discussed comments made by MSNBC host Rachel Maddow to Oliver Darcy for the Reliable Sources newsletter that she was worried former President Donald Trump “plans to build camps” to hold migrants and political enemies, including critics like her, should he return to the White House.

Stelter said that Maddow’s comments had been “nuanced and thoughtful” but acknowledged the remarks were “𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒏-𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.”

Put another way, self-heroic masturbatory fantasy.

It is not an exaggeration to point out what the Trump allies have said they will do and demonstrate how easy it is for them to do it. It couldn’t be clearer that Republicans fully intend to change how our government runs.

Crazy? They have gutted the Voting Rights Act almost completely and overturned Roe. They upheld gerrymandering that allows a minority to rule the country.

by Anonymousreply 76June 13, 2024 11:05 AM

[quote]R94: It’s not organized agitprop. It is DL sarcasm directed at a DL icon mixed with some considered views that she isn’t necessarily a great political thinker. That’s it —

Some of it 𝑖𝑠 organized agitprop, R94, especially the parts defending Trump, or making Biden out to be an equal or greater threat.

And a lot of the attacks on Rachel are just petty, far right shit - of the sort one would find at 4chan. None of it constitutes actual critical analysis of her reporting, especially the shitposts calling a potential fascist takeover an impossible fantasy. The gist of her books and podcast is that a lot of this shit has proven possible in the past; it's happened before, so it's not impossible for it to happen again.

by Anonymousreply 95June 13, 2024 3:47 PM

R88, I like your original wording: “after King Trump is installed as a homosexual”.

by Anonymousreply 96June 13, 2024 3:55 PM

So much Hyperbolie. Trump is a bullshit artist. He says whatever thought comes to his mind at the moment. He isn't going to do any of the things you all claim he will do. He will build camps just like he built the wall. It is all bullshit. You cannot have a dictatorship in 4 years. The SC just upheld the abortion pill. they will not take out our democracy because they all know Trump isn't loyal to anyone. The SC are lifers and are not stupid enough to put their high-status jobs on the line for this idiot who is not trustworthy. If it were even possible for this country to descend into a dictatorship (which it is not) he would get rid of the SC the first time they made a ruling he doesn't like. I had to stop watching MSNBC because of their extreme left reporting.

by Anonymousreply 97June 13, 2024 3:58 PM

But you still lumped all of those different posters in one bag of a post…as if they were all of one mindset. Which is it?—I know for myself. And to me you’ve made a bit of a mess.

by Anonymousreply 98June 13, 2024 4:03 PM

R97, you are falling for it. Change doesn’t happen in fell swoops. The Supreme Court is intentionally balancing their radical decisions with less draconian ones to calm people like you, Barrett specifically tried to delay the Dobbs decision for a while after she was seated so it wouldn’t look as personally and politically motivated as it obviously was.

The Voting Rights Act, campaign finance, and privacy rights were not eroded in one decision. Yet there is no question have taken giant steps backward.

If you’re willing to shrug off the Republican Party’s planning and their candidate’s “joke” that he wants a dictatorship for a day, more power to you. He publicly praises dictators and authoritarians.

And your idea that SC justices’ jobs are at risk in any way - no matter who they support - is laughable.

by Anonymousreply 99June 13, 2024 4:32 PM

R83 is a fucking moron. The Civilian Conservation Corps was a works program that gave people job training and provided much needed public works projects throughout rural America during the Great Depression.

It was not concentration camps for homeless people as R83 implies. And yes, this liberal applauded it, it was a great program and only was shut down in 1942 due to WW II.

by Anonymousreply 100June 13, 2024 5:04 PM

R100, you missed r83’s point completely, but it doesn’t matter.

by Anonymousreply 101June 13, 2024 5:06 PM

Um no, I understood the point perfectly. R83 is just trying to shit stir and bash Democrats. And liberals wer not cheering on the internment of Japanese Americans during WW II.

by Anonymousreply 102June 13, 2024 5:09 PM

R102, that you didn’t understand doesn’t matter.

by Anonymousreply 103June 13, 2024 5:11 PM

R99 I didn't say the SC's jobs were at risk, I said if we ever descended into a dictatorship their jobs would be at risk because of some ruling Trump didn't like. He is not loyal to any institution. A dictatorship would get rid of any court it didn't like. I'm not falling for anything. RVW should never have gone to the SC court in the first place. I was a second-wave feminist starting in 1970 to fight for the right to abortion. Taking it to the liberal court at the time was expedient to get it legalized but abortion is not explicitly in the constitution and even RGB said it did not belong as a SC ruling and was always in danger of it being overturned. The plan was to eventually make it federal law but the ERA failed and we just never got there because we never had the votes.

by Anonymousreply 104June 13, 2024 5:24 PM

Thanks for the breakdown, R87.

It's clear that R6+ and R26+ are the real trolls here.

Probably wandered in here from Stormfront or some other right wing shit site.

by Anonymousreply 105June 13, 2024 5:39 PM

If she keeps talking out of the side of her mouth, she's going to be talking out of her ear soon.

by Anonymousreply 106June 13, 2024 5:52 PM

Trump is at the Capitol today, he shouldn't be allowed to go in.

by Anonymousreply 107June 13, 2024 6:25 PM

R103 No, you're just butthurt because you've been called out as being a shit stirring troll.

by Anonymousreply 108June 13, 2024 6:40 PM

Oh the irony. These same trump worshippers here on DL will make really great kapos. Until they are no longer useful to the maga powers. Then they will be 'dealt with' .

by Anonymousreply 109June 13, 2024 6:43 PM

I'm guessing that R97 doesn't mind far-right reporting so much

by Anonymousreply 110June 13, 2024 6:46 PM

the *fact* is, r97, Trump is *directly* responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans. Not bad for a mere "bullshit artist".

by Anonymousreply 111June 13, 2024 7:13 PM

R110 I don't watch any cable news anymore. I watched Maddox and Laurence every day during Trump's presidency and after he was out of office I was so burned from all the over-the-top doom reporting that I stopped watching altogether. Now I just follow print stories. I read the Atlantic and the Guardian. I am a registered Democrat not progressive but left of center.

by Anonymousreply 112June 13, 2024 7:15 PM

Awww, sorry you were "burned" by all that reporting about what a complete fuckwad Trump is r112. Hey, did you hear that Trump tried to stage an insurrection just to stay in power? Did you hear he spent weeks trying to get a slate of fake electors in place so that when the time came, they could throw the election to House and declare him the winner, even after he'd clearly lost the election?

But hey, at least you're not one of them grrrr Progressives!

by Anonymousreply 113June 13, 2024 7:21 PM

[quote]Trump has never even mentioned her, has he? I always wondered what that was about.

Trump may or may not have ever mentioned Rachel Maddow; however, Trump is a danger to her, and his cult followers are even more dangerous. Maddow is right to be worried about her well being as are other journalists, commentators and anyone in the media. Trump and his cult are an enormous threat as are any terrorist organization, which is what many of them are..

by Anonymousreply 114June 13, 2024 7:28 PM

You'd be a fool to underestimate the damage a second Trump term will do. He already tried to overthrow the government, do you think he's kidding when he says he's going to build detention camps, deport millions of people, and purging the government of career employees and replacing them with his loyalists??????

People better vote accordingly in November.

by Anonymousreply 115June 13, 2024 7:38 PM

She lied about Covid vaccines and she lied about Trump/Russia. How she has any credibility left is beyond me. But people truly do believe what they WANT to believe.

Her neck and that neck mole alone should disqualify her from being on tv.

by Anonymousreply 116June 13, 2024 7:47 PM

She has no talent and she’s a liar. Plus ugly as fuck

by Anonymousreply 117June 13, 2024 7:49 PM

R115 Bullshit. He said all those same things the last time and none of it happened because he was too stupid to accomplish anything. It takes years to form a dictatorship and we have layers and layers of government protection against overturning this democracy. Look, I will be honest, I can't stand either of them. Biden is senile and he is not running the country. He should have been replaced, he is too old and doddering. Both of them are senile. We need younger candidates. It is time for Gen X and older Millennials to start running the country.

by Anonymousreply 118June 13, 2024 7:50 PM

[quote]Trump may or may not have ever mentioned Rachel Maddow; however, Trump is a danger to her,

I never said he wasn't, r114. But it's interesting that with every one else he went after during his reign of terror, she was never the object of her wrath.

[quote]R97: He isn't going to do any of the things you all claim he will do. He will build camps just like he built the wall.

He built some 458 miles of wall, most of it replacing older barriers in disrepair, but 52 miles of it where none had been before. How many camps do you reckon he will build, especially since Republican lawmakers and state officials are so incredibly stoked to have them?

Under Stephen Miller (see, it's never 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 Trump, but the hoards of racists and extremists he appoints and brings with him), many thousands of migrants were jailed during his first term, and some 5,000 children were separated from their families, many of whom have yet to be reunited with them (the Trump Administration destroyed the records in order to prevent their recovery).

Of course he'll build camps. He built camps before.

R111 is correct. Trump began his first term by immediately shitcanning the Obama-era policy plans in place for dealing with a pandemic, and once it arrived, he grossly mismanaged it, attacking science and the doctors at every point. Over a million US citizens died.

There's not enough room on this thread to list every damaging thing Trump did the first time around.

[quote]You cannot have a dictatorship in 4 years.

They've had his first term during which to try all the doors, and three years besides to plan how they intend to make it happen. It's not 'Hyperbolie,' and it's not a joke. [quote]he would get rid of the SC the first time they made a ruling he doesn't like.

[quote]I had to stop watching MSNBC because of their extreme left reporting.

And 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡'𝑠 an open admission that you're a far right partisan. They just report 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑠, babe. Facts.

She’s totally on point. The miserable motherfucker will toss all of us in concentration camps.

by Anonymousreply 122June 13, 2024 8:02 PM

For a network that just reports the facts, they sure do feature a lot of opinion and commentary…looking at the schedule it is their bread and butter.

by Anonymousreply 123June 13, 2024 8:13 PM

R121 So if a person is not far left then they are automatically far right. Got it. Talk about some ridiculous black-and-white thinking but you have always been a troll, Poisoned Dragon. Don't address me as sweetheart and babe.

by Anonymousreply 127June 13, 2024 8:43 PM

So the important thing is that Trump didn't actually succeed in his first attempt to install himself as president after losing an election, so like, let bygones be bygones y'all. What? He didn't really do it, so, um, let him try again. It's only fair.

Also, Biden's like old and stuff, so um, gross, so just vote for Trump, cause he's just the best, you guys. Okay? Come on, he probably won't even do like half the stuff he intends to do!

by Anonymousreply 128June 13, 2024 8:44 PM

Yeah r116, if you’re going to bring up supposed lies about Covid vaccines, you’re too far gone for DL. Please exit the DL, you’ve obviously made a wrong turn somewhere.

R116 is also buying into a far right Faux News narrative regarding Trump/Russia. Those facts are well-established.

I watched it for 4 years. After he was out of office I stopped watching cable news because I don't have cable I was using a sling service. When Trump left office I was so burnt out at all the over-the-top constant doom. All of them on MSNBC constantly report as if the world is ending. If Trump gets elected I am not going through that again. I will only vote Democratic on down ballots. I'm frankly sick of having to choose the lesser of two and this is the worst I have ever seen in two presidential candidates. If the Democrats win big in Nov and trump wins the presidency he will not be able to accomplish anything. I don't need to be explaining this to a troll.

by Anonymousreply 131June 13, 2024 8:58 PM

Trolling is actually pretending that Biden is some "lesser of two evils" and Trump is just a typical American president, seeking to do what's best by his own lights.

Utter horseshit, like everything else you post r131.

by Anonymousreply 132June 13, 2024 9:01 PM

[quote]R131: I watched it for 4 years. After he was out of office I stopped watching cable news because I don't have cable I was using a sling service.

Be honest.

[quote]When Trump left office I was so burnt out at all the over-the-top constant doom. All of them on MSNBC constantly report as if the world is ending. If Trump gets elected I am not going through that again.

So, an emotional reaction governed your choice of news input.

Right wing news is many times more negative. Why isn't it too much for you?

[quote] I will only vote Democratic on down ballots. I'm frankly sick of having to choose the lesser of two and this is the worst I have ever seen in two presidential candidates.

That you frame the equation in those terms means you've been listening to some pretty extreme far right propaganda. Biden is not the monster you're making him out to be.

[quote]If the Democrats win big in Nov and trump wins the presidency he will not be able to accomplish anything.

He will be able to set White House policy, establish a Cabinet, issue executive orders and initiatives, and fill many thousands of positions in the executive and judiciary purely by appointment, without any oversight by Dems. Look at the damage he did the last time.

And this time they have a plan.

I just told you upthread. I read print news. I read the NY Times, Atlantic, Guardian, and The Washington Post, I have HBO and they have free CNN which I only watch on a big news story like OCT 7th. I have never watched Fox News. A ruling by executive order is not making law. The next person that comes into office can overturn it. It is a stupid way to govern but this country is so divided that we cannot compromise anymore.

by Anonymousreply 134June 13, 2024 9:44 PM

[quote]R134: I just told you upthread. I read print news. I read the NY Times, Atlantic, Guardian, and The Washington Post, I have HBO and they have free CNN which I only watch on a big news story like OCT 7th.

Define "print news." Your local crazier-than-the-John-Birch-Society newspaper?

From those online sources, I don't believe that you can really get to opinions like "Biden is senile and he is not running the country." That's something else again.

[quote]A ruling by executive order is not making law. The next person that comes into office can overturn it.

Maybe. It's likely that many of the separated migrant families will never be whole again, which was kind of the point of the policy and the way they carried it out, a sort of 'you can never undo what we just did.' The same mentality underlies many mass shooters.

Things like Dobbs v Jackson 𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑡 be oveturned by the 'next person.' Nor can any of the other damage done by the Supreme Court. Another term would give Trump a chance to appoint even more MAGAt justices.

And you're assuming that there will 𝑏𝑒 a 'next person that comes into office.' Trump wants to be 'President For Life,' and there's too few barriers to his being able to do that. Over the past 50 years, the 22nd Amendment has been challenged over 50 times. Like Roe v Wade, they'll eventually take it down or modify it.

Have you even bothered to read the Project 2025 link, or researched it at all?

by Anonymousreply 136June 13, 2024 10:08 PM

R133, an executive order is not law but it is not always easily overturned. Both Japanese internment and DACA were implemented by executive order.

Agencies also have a great deal of power to set priorities and operate. The family separation policy was in fact Trump’s DOJ decision that was *ended* by an executive order.

Trump looks for loopholes and weaknesses in the system. He was clueless in 2017 - his staff literally couldn’t turn on the lights. His second term would build on what he learned. Letting this man in the White House would be an absolute disaster.

by Anonymousreply 137June 13, 2024 10:16 PM

R136 Those Newspapers are print news but I read them online. I don't need to read that Biden is senile. It is very obvious. Even comparing him to just 4 years ago you can see a big difference. I was a geriatric and hospice nurse and had many Alzheimer's patients and I know what it looks like and he is senile. I don't particularly like him but I voted for him the last time. He let in Clarence Thomas. I have always resented him for that and he was against abortion he is catholic. He pays lip service to it now but I doubt he is going to lift too many fingers to try to make it law.

Ah, so it's because of your claimed medical expertise. Mmm-hmm. An identity-based claim.

Even if it was true that he's senile, how much damage do you think he could do, or be allowed to do? It's not like he's driving a car. And he's not bubbling over with dementia (have you heard about the electric boat batteries and the sharks?), malicious craziness, and fantasies of revenge like Trump is. He's not the puppet of a hostile foreign leader, like Trump is of Putin. If Biden had a serious breakdown, Kamala Harris would step smoothly into the role. Nothing would crash in any way comparable to the kind of damage maniac Trump has promised to cause.

[quote]He let in Clarence Thomas. I have always resented him for that...

George Bush Sr 'let in' Clarence Thomas. You don't even have basic facts right.

Bidens Character is of course better. I don't like him but now (I know you will call me right-wing for this) he is seriously pushing the trans movement. I am a woman and don't want creepy trans in bathrooms prisons and locker rooms. Biden is convicting a whistleblower who exposed a Texas hospital that was secretly doing transgender surgeries on minors. Trump will likely win whether we want him to or not. by Anonymousreply 150June 13, 2024 11:03 PM

RvW was always at risk of being overturned. It is not really a constitutional issue. Privacy is a weak argument. It passed in '73 because we had a very liberal court and it was done to get a law on the books at the time. But the Goal was always to pass the ERA and get it in the constitution. Abortion would have been part of the ERA. We never had the votes to do that. Even RGB said it shouldn't have been a Supreme Court issue.

by Anonymousreply 151June 13, 2024 11:10 PM

Well, you got your wish, Trump Whore. Roe v Wade has now been overturned, and everybody who wants to ban abortion everywhere, for every reason, can now vote Republican, and everyone who doesn't agree can vote Not Republican.

So, all is well, right?

by Anonymousreply 152June 13, 2024 11:14 PM

[quote]R145: Now you are making stuff up. I am most definitely a citizen of the US and did vote for Biden.

You cannot qualify any of that, and your claim that Biden 'let Clarence Thomas in' doesn't militate in favor of it.

Don't make claims that you cannot demonstrate with evidence.

[quote]I am not saying that Trump is better. Trump is a psychopath and a pathological liar. Bidens Character is of course better.

Then your choice ought to be clear, shouldn't it?

[quote]I don't like him but now (I know you will call me right-wing for this) he is seriously pushing the trans movement. I am a woman and don't want creepy trans in bathrooms prisons and locker rooms.

You're right; that's a profoundly far right talking point.

Biden doesn't 'convict' anybody. He doesn't run the Justice Department. Nor does your linked article say anything like that. (This sounds so much like Matt A. bullshit, it isn't even funny.)

[quote]Trump will likely win whether we want him to or not.

What has that to do with your vote? Stop gazing into the Palantir Stone, Denethor.

[quote] I live in CA and it is the bluest state in the nation so I will vote Democrat on the down ballot and write in JKR as a protest vote. It doesn't matter if I vote or not. All the delegates will go to Biden.

by Anonymousreply 154June 13, 2024 11:19 PM

But Biden's fingerprints are all over this. The Justice Dept is doing his bidding. It wouldn't be happening without Biden. Matt is the twinkle in a young girl's, well now boy's, eye. Matt is the sun going down on a beautiful California beach, while we cast our votes, but only down-ballot, cause eww, Biden. Matt is the laughter and the tears as we sift through the local print news online and avert our eyes when that awful liberal lady comes on the TV set.

But mostly, Matt is all the trolls we met along the way!

by Anonymousreply 160June 13, 2024 11:46 PM

I know what Project 2025 is but it doesn't mean that they can implement it. We have 3 branches of gov and roughly half are Democrats. So much TDS on here. I don't like Trump but will not go crazy again if he gets elected. I am too old to deal with all that emotional manipulation. He probably won't be a good president but neither will Biden. Biden might die or be too incapacitated to finish a term and we will be stuck with Harris.

by Anonymousreply 161June 13, 2024 11:46 PM

My comment was for R161.

by Anonymousreply 165June 13, 2024 11:53 PM

R159 I don't think there are a lot of trans in Russia. I doubt that Putin even tolerates gays.

by Anonymousreply 166June 13, 2024 11:53 PM

R161 is so persuasive. Now I'm voting for Trump, too!

by Anonymousreply 169June 14, 2024 12:03 AM

I'm not voting for Trump why do you keep accusing me of it? I'm not voting for president in my very blue state where my vote doesn't even count. But I'm not voting for Trump. I'm not the only Democrat that thinks Biden shouldn't be running because he is losing it.

by Anonymousreply 174June 14, 2024 12:18 AM

R170, whether your CA vote counts for much or not, you seem committed to airing your grievances repeatedly, openly, and angrily. And those grievances are giving fuel to a rapist, felon, and vocal sexual predator who is personally responsible for making women’s bodies a debate stage. Just stop.

by Anonymousreply 175June 14, 2024 12:20 AM

F/F and Ignore, r175. Let's get rid of this troll bitch.

by Anonymousreply 176June 14, 2024 12:23 AM

R175? It seems to me that most of the posters on DL are extremely left-wing so how am I causing people to go out and vote for Trump? I am angry at the whole government. It is horribly corrupt and the Democrats have left the middle class and cater to big corporations. Both parties do that now. And women have every right to complain about the trans. It is a concern we do have. The Democrats love to hold out the abortion carrot but in 50 years couldn't codify abortion. They did have some chances.

by Anonymousreply 177June 14, 2024 12:28 AM

and he's going to be looking for me too

by Anonymousreply 178June 14, 2024 12:30 AM

And this is why nobody believes a word you post r177. Nobody can look at the current election, and the current parties, and say, yup, everyone is equally anti-abortion. Nope, not possible. You're a lying cunt, and you make it clear with that post.

by Anonymousreply 179June 14, 2024 12:31 AM

[quote] It's always been a mystery to me why Donald and his minions never attacked Rachel.

That’s easy to understand. If she can get lunatic politicos who watch her show to focus on absurd fantasies, then they won’t pay attention to the things the GOP could actually do in the real world. While Democrats are busy standing vigil looking for tanks to roll by on the streets, the GOP will be repealing all kinds of things Constitutionally in Congress.

by Anonymousreply 180June 14, 2024 1:23 AM

[quote] Hey, did you hear that Trump tried to stage an insurrection

No I never heard that, at least not from anybody in authority to make such a judgment. I know a number of rioters were arrested and convicted for disturbing the peace of similar light crimes mostly in keeping with the "mostly peaceful protests" of BLM, but to the best of my knowledge not a single person from either group has been changed with "insurrection"

Sadly the Constitution never considered granting that authority to partisan cheerleader television broadcasters desperate to stir up her audience with the latest political porn.

Just F/F the damn troll...who is also:

*Trump can't win*

[quote]I am a woman and I'm not voting for Biden. The Democrats use abortion as a carrot but won't do anything about it. They can't do anything anyway now that it has gone to the States. And Biden is tied to the whole trans bullshit. He isn't doing enough to stop people from coming over the border. I'm writing in JKRowling. But I live in the bluest state in the nation so it won't matter how I vote. I am voting blue on all down ballots. Hopefully, the Democrats will win the House and Senate and that will render the orange menace a lame-duck president.

[quote]I don't give a shit if you believe me or not. I cannot believe gay people are so pro-trans when trans women are mostly straight and homophobic. I also live in CA which means I don't have to vote because CA is true blue. In CA you can lose your kids if you don't put them on hormones when the kid says they are trans. Most women are not as concerned about abortion as I would have thought. I was a second-wave feminist in the 70s and am shocked at how little women care about losing abortion. Most women can still obtain abortions if they do it early. You can now get abortion pills over the counter in certain states and we are sending them to women who need them in states that don't allow abortion. Which is why they are trying to get the pills off the market.

I don't think she is, r187, but thank you for sharing.

by Anonymousreply 188June 14, 2024 2:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 189June 14, 2024 2:55 AM

R189 I agree. PBS NewsHour is sane and doesn't try to emotionally manipulate you. I got so burnt out by MSNBC during Trump's last presidency.

So Rachel is hoping to be punished to avoid being ignored?

by Anonymousreply 198June 14, 2024 4:16 AM

She can be over the top on a lot of things. When her wife got sick with Covid she wasn't even hospitalized just regular flu and Rachael was freaking worried that Susan was going to die. She wasn't that sick. She gets very nervous sometimes gets embarrassed easily and turns red. She acts embarrassed when sex is mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 199June 14, 2024 4:21 AM

[quote] So Rachel is hoping to be punished to avoid being ignored?

Mainly she is hoping to present herself as heroic like the guy in Tiananmen Square.

Except there are no tank brigades for her to face down so she will supply them from her imagination.

by Anonymousreply 201June 14, 2024 4:51 AM

She should worry more. None of these people even admitted that the murder of Alan Berg was wrong.

None of these people even admitted that the murder of Alan Berg was wrong.

by Anonymousreply 205June 14, 2024 5:42 AM

Rachel Maddow is a hack. I appreciate her role in opposing Trump but she’s a complete joke as a journalist.

by Anonymousreply 206June 14, 2024 8:59 AM

She’s a commentator.

by Anonymousreply 207June 14, 2024 11:25 AM

OP is disingenuous with his title. What about this don't you get, r197 & r204?

[quote]So, yes, I’m worried about me — but only as much as I’m worried about all of us.

by Anonymousreply 208June 14, 2024 3:00 PM

Dr. Maddow was a Rhodes scholar, earned a B.A. from Stanford, and a Ph.D. from Oxford. Her research skills are unparalleled and you obviously have never read her books or listened to Ultra if you "think" she's a hack. There's not a single GOPig who will speak with her since, as a cult, they have no use for critical thinking and inconvenient facts. They settle for hurling insults like "hack" and "annoying" while slobbering over college dropout Hannity and Richie Rich Carlson who bought his private degree and is now featured in Russia. WTF? Russia?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 209June 14, 2024 3:16 PM

A Rhodes scholar does not a good journalist make. Shes not even an actual journalist, much less a newscaster—she’s simply a talking head with an opinion show.

by Anonymousreply 210June 14, 2024 3:26 PM

And a podcaster! Sorry for omitting that.

by Anonymousreply 211June 14, 2024 3:28 PM

[quote]R196: Because she sneered at Hilary and helped pile up on her. It really pissed me off.

Link to where this supposedly happened.

Just like R54 / R204, you're lying.

Maddow has always been a dedicated proponent of Hillary Clinton, and frequently has her as a guest on the show.

by Anonymousreply 213June 14, 2024 3:44 PM

r210, I know. She's so dull and insignificant that I wouldn't even click on a thread and read 200 posts about her and make painfully insipid remarks. Who has time for that?

You, apparently. 👋🏼

I think Rachel is smokin' hot and she's my fantasy GF.

That said, she talks like an academic is trained to write, i.e., never use three words when you could say it in 30. Or better yet, 300. Those dissertations don't write themselves, ya know!

So I love to look at her, but I can't make myself listen/watch her show.

Frankly, I think Trump is afraid of her, because he knows a smart cookie when he sees one. If he becomes president, I don't think she has anything to worry about, as long as she leaves the country like the rest of us.

by Anonymousreply 217June 14, 2024 3:59 PM

She’s a commentator with a breathless delivery. She always sounds like she’s got some amazing information to share, Right after the next commercial. She’s never broken a real story or brought anything new to any issue. I know her anxious fans hang on every word.

Well, to be fair, the thread 𝑖𝑠 about ℎ𝑒𝑟, not Howard Fineman, Tucker Carlson, Jeff Goldberg, or whoever else you're trying to divert to.

Far more interesting, R6- (et al, to the tune of 23 plus posts on this thread from one account) is why you and the socks are so heavily invested in attacking her. (Yes, 𝑠𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑠 - it cannot be a coincidence that R97 et al, claims to get its news from The Atlantic, and you're promoting Jeff Goldberg. Other observers can note the significance of interest in Goldberg to one of DL's longest, most enduring pest trolls.)

And no, it's not your 'last post.' You came back, at R215.

Well ! it is a not coincidence and why is it so hard for you to believe I read the Atlantic? I do. I read lots of stuff but I do not read right-wing stuff. I think you argue just to argue. It is very much troll behavior. Nothing that I have said at all is controversial. I don't want Trump to win. For once in my 74-year life, I feel like doing a protest vote. I plan to write in JKR. I think I have Congestive heart failure. I haven't been diagnosed. I don't want to live to be too old because I never want to go into a nursing home. I will refuse any cancer treatment or surgery. My other biggest worry is I have to have some kind of understanding with her son If she were to die first. Her mother just left her a shit-ton of money she told me she doesn't know what to do with it all. She will have to tell her son to get me a small granny house to fit in his very large backyard.
