Did you know that Jake Gyllenhaal is legally blind?

Jake Gyllenhaal made his acting debut alongside Billy Crystal in the 1991 comedy "City Slickers," and has since earned accolades for his on-screen abilities.

Gyllenhaal, 43, doesn't let his legally blind status stop him from taking opportunities when it comes to his impressive acting career.

The "Road House" star was born with a lazy eye that naturally corrected itself, and has been wearing corrective lenses since he was six years old.

"I like to think it's advantageous," he told The Hollywood Reporter of being legally blind. "I've never known anything else."

He added, "When I can't see in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it's a place where I can be with myself."

Gyllenhaal has a 20/1250 prescription as determined through the Snellen Eye Chart, a test most commonly used by optometrists in the United States.

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and the United States government determined a visual acuity of 20/400 is very low functional vision.

His blindness proved to be a helpful tool for a character, though. In the 2015 boxing movie "Southpaw," police told his character that his wife died, and Gyllenhaal removed his contacts so that he could listen closely for his next movement.

In 2017, he told The Telegraph that wearing his thick, Coke-bottle-like glasses in school made him stand out more than other students.

"I was an easy target," he said. "And I was always a sensitive kid."

As far as his dating life goes, Gyllenhaal was hesitant to discuss his six-year relationship with French model Jeanne Cadieu, and refused to answer any questions about marriage.

It’s hard when you live on 2 different continents

I wonder if Jake has an actual eye disease or if he is just very short-sighted? Whichever one, I applaud his association with this organisation.

Jakey would have to be blind not to notice Jean didn't have a cock.

by Anonymousreply 3June 6, 2024 9:51 AM

So he can’t drive? That would be tough, but definitely mitigated by having a lot of money.

by Anonymousreply 4June 6, 2024 10:19 AM

Of course he can drive, R4. If he couldn’t, it would be nearly impossible to sneak around with guys at night. You can’t trust drivers and bodyguards to keep quiet.

by Anonymousreply 5June 6, 2024 10:31 AM

What does this mean?

In the 2015 boxing movie "Southpaw," police told his character that his wife died, and Gyllenhaal removed his contacts so that he could listen closely for his next movement.

by Anonymousreply 6June 6, 2024 10:31 AM

He drives normally, has been papped in his car plenty of times over the years.

I have a legally blind cousin who drives, but he has a special pair of glasses with some sort of robotic lenses. They aren't practical to wear in every day life though--I think because of the weight and the short battery life.

by Anonymousreply 8June 6, 2024 10:38 AM

[quote] He drives normally, has been papped in his car plenty of times over the years.

So, basically, he wears corrective lenses. Good grief.

R8

That’s cool - do they look different?

If I read OP’s words correctly, JG’s RX is -12.5, which is very strong. My contact lens RX was -9 for years and in the months preceding my cataract surgery, dropped to -19 in one eye. That’s the strongest RX available in a contact, IIRC. I could barely read highway signs, which is what prompted me to see my optometrist and get diagnosed.

by Anonymousreply 10June 6, 2024 10:44 AM

I'm surprised he can wear contacts considering he had to wear very thick glasses.

A guy I've worked with for about 5 years surprised me the other day by telling me he's worn contact lenses the whole time I've known him. Anyone else I know with contacts has worn their glasses at some point (eg if their eyes are a bit tired) but he never does. Vanity is strong in that one!

I only need glasses for the computer (and, even then, I can read without them it just makes things a bit easier on my eyes). I don't mind that I probably look like a bit of a geek where I wear them in the office.

I see a new action movie in Jake’s future!

I have -6.5 and -7.5 lenses and that is High. -10 is very high. But I myself would qualify for legal blindness because my vision would between 20/200 and 20/400. The barometer of legal blindness is 20/200.

I imagine 20/1250 would simple be a great wash of gauzy, indistinct shapes.

[quote]He added, "When I can't see in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it's a place where I can be with myself."

So before he puts on his glasses he just sits and stares at fuzzy shapes and amorphous light blobs so he can feel withdrawn.

This is the most autistic thing I have ever fucking read.

As far as the relationship with Cadeau the fact that he refuses to talk about means it’s the real thing.

When two Aspies vibe together they simultaneously begin to mirror each other. It gives it the paradoxical quality of seeming both awkward and extremely comfortable with each other. A good example of this can be seen in the video of Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy going to the video store together.

He would not talk about her publicly because he would separate her from the external world, which to him is a nonstop performance.

The previous relationships where he was very demonstrably affectionate all looked performative because they were performative.

The real Gyllenhaal is the one who is staring at them while they eat. He stares at them because that is the moment they are not looking at him. Because they are not looking at him, he can revert to his actual self, which is essentially an alien observing what it is to be human, which he will then mimic.

R16 No, his mouth can find where the cock is without looking for it. It's even easier if the cock owner directs it towards Jake's mouth!

by Anonymousreply 18June 6, 2024 1:29 PM

His eyeballs are too close to each other, and are cancelling each other out.

by Anonymousreply 19June 6, 2024 1:34 PM

Surely even in America, where you can be President from a jail cell, you can't drive at all if listed as legally blind? Particularly when you're a famous actor well able to afford a driver, and to have one written into every contract so you don't even pay for the service when you're working.

I have a relative who is legally blind due to the visual effects of albinism. He has enough sight to take very good photos, and can work on a screen using the Access settings and apps that allow you to blow up the size without losing the format--but driving is still completely out.

by Anonymousreply 20June 6, 2024 1:35 PM

No wonder he can’t find his way out of the closet.

by Anonymousreply 21June 6, 2024 1:42 PM

r13, how do you do the calculation? my partner's is -7.5. is that also legally blind?

by Anonymousreply 22June 6, 2024 1:48 PM

There's something gross and off-putting about people who take pride in being superior to, and knowing all about "aspies." You're the one who sounds like a goddamned freak. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 23June 6, 2024 1:51 PM

It’s from all that masturbating.

by Anonymousreply 24June 6, 2024 1:51 PM

Does he have hairy palms too?

by Anonymousreply 25June 6, 2024 1:52 PM

Why are we learning this NOW?

by Anonymousreply 26June 6, 2024 2:10 PM

He's such a liar. He regularly surfs but he's wearing thick contacts???

I think legally blind applies to your corrected vision. He can prob still wear glasses or contacts to see 20/20. I know this because I’m 20/40 with correction in one eye.

With natural vision that bad, he’s at increased risk for lots of eye problems, including retinal detachment.

by Anonymousreply 29June 6, 2024 3:19 PM

I was considered legally blind for 2 years, because my uncorrected vision was 20/1400 in one eye and 20/1200 in the other. With very thick lenses, I could drive and do everything else as usual.

by Anonymousreply 30June 6, 2024 4:38 PM

^ Let me clarify that the eye doctor was nutty as fuck, so maybe I only had 20/400 and 20/200, but he wrote it as 1400/1200.

by Anonymousreply 31June 6, 2024 4:44 PM

He’s always had an odd, faraway stare so this makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 32June 6, 2024 4:47 PM

There was a story that he had just had lens implants . Concern was they would be damaged, That was why he used a stunt double for the cliff jump in BBM and Heath did not. Probably he was just a wuss.

My RX is -5.00 and without contacts or glasses the whole world is a big blue. It's crazy to me that people can have eyesight that's even worse than mine.

Believe me, without corrective lenses I wouldn't be able to function.

by Anonymousreply 34June 6, 2024 5:57 PM

Sorry, I meant the whole world is a big BLUR. Fucking autocorrect.

by Anonymousreply 35June 6, 2024 5:57 PM

[quote] "I was an easy target," he said. "And I was always a sensitive kid."

I hope you all feel bad now, for bullying poor Jakey.

by Anonymousreply 36June 6, 2024 6:15 PM

I know he is legally in the closet

by Anonymousreply 37June 6, 2024 6:21 PM

yes, but whenn u say -5.00. what is that in terms of 20/20 version?

by Anonymousreply 38June 6, 2024 6:24 PM

one of my elderly friends had an implant too but it's not great. he's in his 80s and he has other vision problems so it's too complicated for me to understand. He can't see well

by Anonymousreply 39June 6, 2024 6:25 PM

If corrective lenses can improve his vision enough, he is probably NOT legally blind. You are considered legally blind when your vision cannot be corrected to 20/200 with glasses or contacts.

by Anonymousreply 40June 6, 2024 6:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 41June 6, 2024 10:37 PM

Ahhh, a new one in the ailment-lexicon for celebrities to use to stay in the headlines!

by Anonymousreply 42June 6, 2024 10:42 PM

I was born (mid-1960s) with a severe amblyopia in my right eye. I'd learned to read at age 2, but had started closing the bad eye so i wasn't seeing double. My pediatrician told my parents I would go blind in that eye without corrective surgery. When Mother heard that, she asked if there were alternatives; he told her there was one eye specialist in town who worked with severe eye conditions in a holistic (or whatever the term was in the 1960s) way.

So every Monday morning for the next three years Mother and I took the bus to the doctor's office, where I did grueling eye exercises I also had to repeat at home every day.

By the time I was 6, that eye had 90% correction, but to this day when I'm very tired it will turn inward.

I am so grateful my mother did that for me. We were working class, but my parents went the extra mile for us. I wonder why Jake's parents with all their $$$ and resources didn't do more about that eye.

by Anonymousreply 43June 6, 2024 11:10 PM

I think Jake got confused with Legally Blonde. He still has that outfit and the blonde wig in his closet.

by Anonymousreply 44June 6, 2024 11:32 PM

To be fair, if you grew up the first 18 years of your life in a household where there was the possibility of seeing, however briefly and by accident, Maggie in the nude...

by Anonymousreply 45June 6, 2024 11:36 PM

I'll fuck him so good, his eyes will straighten out!

by Anonymousreply 46June 6, 2024 11:37 PM
