I never saw it - the previews seemed like a drag. And it was too muppety for me, back then. Maybe it was good, and I missed out?
So why don't you watch the movie, now? If you don't like it, you can turn it off.

It was fun to cheer for the villains and hope they'd obliterate the annoying fake!elves.

Yes it’s more to be admired (as an adult) than enjoyed. It’s much too dark for children.
Very famous anecdote about Henson showing the first cut of the film to the Universal executives and all of them left the screening room after it finished without saying a word to him. They knew they couldn’t market it.
However the Netflix prequel from a few years ago is excellent and not as overwhelmingly macabre.

I think it’s one of the most brilliant things Henson ever did. Up there with Star Wars in terms of world building.

I loved Chamberlain’s “OooooooooOoooOoooOhhhhhh”.

I loved it as a kid and I love it now. It's definitely a dark story but just like The last unicorn there's small sliver of Hope in it.

I recently read it was supposed to be The Dark Chrysalis without anything to do with crystals. The art director misheard during the pitch and Henson worked the crystal aspect into it.

Agreed that the Netflix prequel was quite good. I was disappointed it was only the one season but at the same time, almost relieved because here we were learning all about the Gelfling expanded world but also knowing that every last one of them would be killed.

I saw it in theaters and loved it. It’s better than “Labyrinth” and Jennifer Connelly’s terrible acting.

There were a ton of weird dark fantasy films from that era that scared the crap out of kids.

Aughra’s observatory is one of the best sets I’ve seen in any movie. I
Dark Crystal ia really Henson’s masterpiece.
