Cyndi Lauper announces farewell tour

She’s hanging it up?

[quote]Lauper did not release any statement explaining her reasons for deciding to do a farewell tour now, although she is expected to talk about it later this week as she promotes a new documentary about her career, “Let the Canary Sing,” that premieres on Paramount+ Tuesday.

Fuck you, r1! 😂

by Anonymousreply 2June 3, 2024 11:26 PM

Can't stand her screechy voice

by Anonymousreply 3June 3, 2024 11:30 PM

She only needs an Oscar to EGOT.

by Anonymousreply 4June 3, 2024 11:30 PM

Showing your true colors, mein Fuhrer.

Annoying bitch. She’s epitome of every woke liberal Frau.

by Anonymousreply 6June 3, 2024 11:34 PM

She was interviewed yesterday on 'Sunday Moorning' - one of the most awful interviews I ever sat through. She offered nothing new about herself that we hadn't known over the past forty years. It was a promotional spot for her upcoming streaming documentary, which I guess I'll pass on.

by Anonymousreply 7June 3, 2024 11:58 PM

If a tree falls in the forest but nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

by Anonymousreply 8June 3, 2024 11:58 PM

She's been around forever (and has been a gay rights star forever), but somehow she's never become "Cyndi" the way that Liza, Gaga, Madonna, etc. have.

I think she's respected more than loved.

by Anonymousreply 9June 4, 2024 12:02 AM

[quote]She's been around forever (and has been a gay rights star forever), but somehow she's never become "Cyndi" the way that Liza, Gaga, Madonna, etc. have.

Because she only has three fucking songs that she's been singing for forty years. And an annoying, grating personality and a voice like nails on a chalkboard.

by Anonymousreply 10June 4, 2024 12:07 AM

I like Cyndi but she's horrible at marketing and business (where a lesser vocalist like Madonna excelled). She also only has a handful of good songs. It's as if she thought once she became famous anything she put out would be an automatic hit.

by Anonymousreply 11June 4, 2024 12:17 AM

Cyndi also took long breaks between projects. Madonna was a fucking workhorse.

by Anonymousreply 12June 4, 2024 12:18 AM

Wasn't she like 40 years old way back in 1985?

by Anonymousreply 13June 4, 2024 12:24 AM

Cyndi became 'dated' very quickly, whereas Madonna stayed 'fresh' for decades. Her best album was 30 years ago - 'Sisters of Avalon' - which everyone ignored.

by Anonymousreply 14June 4, 2024 12:25 AM

Cyndi's hits are bigger than Madonna's, although Madonna is the bigger star.

Cyndi's voice is pretty much gone at this point, and that was her big selling point. It's smart that she's calling it quits.

by Anonymousreply 15June 4, 2024 12:28 AM

R15, her voice is stronger than ever. I heard it live.

by Anonymousreply 16June 4, 2024 12:32 AM

She’s 70. She rode the fumes of one big album and several minor ones for 40 years. That’s enough.

by Anonymousreply 17June 4, 2024 12:35 AM

[quote]Cyndi's hits are bigger than Madonna's,

No they're not.

by Anonymousreply 18June 4, 2024 12:39 AM

R18, Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time are both bigger than any Madonna song.

by Anonymousreply 19June 4, 2024 12:42 AM

Not really r19

by Anonymousreply 20June 4, 2024 12:49 AM

Cyndi has three pop classics that are still regularly played on the radio, and one which has become an anthem of the gay community (True Colors) all some forty years after the fact.

Hardly a flash in the pan.

by Anonymousreply 21June 4, 2024 12:52 AM

She only had three songs and has been coasting on those fumes for forty years.

by Anonymousreply 22June 4, 2024 12:54 AM

R9 For one thing she is too New York in ways that Gaga never got pigeonholed into being. She also never conventionally attractive. She is just so white girl New York. It’s hard to explain if you never lived there or grew up around these chicas. Gaga who is a few years older than me doesn’t have a hardcore New York accent. Also she was able to up play her weirdness with the rising LGBT visibility. I’m thinking Gaga songs are were also huger relative to the music market than Cindy’s at the time. I told alll my friends Gaga is going to be the next Madonna very early on. I didn’t realize she would flame out as fast as she did but the whole music landscape has changed. She re-invented herself with her film career so really she is like the new age Cher.

by Anonymousreply 23June 4, 2024 1:01 AM

I say The Rolling Stones’ farewell tour…a decade ago😵‍💫

by Anonymousreply 24June 4, 2024 1:03 AM

R21 I don’t think that’s what that poster was saying. It’s funny how grams works and the connection with a national audience. Some people become popular but never quite become formidable household names. For example you might have find your average straight middle age white am walk into a bar and ask them to play Time after time by Madonna. Some people my age think Girls Just Wannna Have Fun is a Madonna song. Sometimes a star comes out that is similar to you and they become so huge that it just totally eclipse you forever. For a modern example see Beyonce and Kelis.

by Anonymousreply 25June 4, 2024 1:08 AM

[quote] I don’t think that’s what that poster was saying.

Who the fuck asked you, Teacunt?

by Anonymousreply 26June 4, 2024 1:12 AM

R26 Oh my. You ok? Did he not call back?

by Anonymousreply 27June 4, 2024 1:13 AM

Omg I clearly there it’s funny how fame* works

by Anonymousreply 28June 4, 2024 1:14 AM

I can't think of a bigger female song from the 80s than Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I hear it almost every time I listen to radio. Same with Time After Time.

It's funny that many of the Top 40 radio stations are changing to a 70s, 80s and 90s format. We only have one Top 40 radio station left in my city, and we're a major radio market. I guess teens and college-aged kids today don't listen to radio anymore. Gen X still listens to the radio.

by Anonymousreply 29June 4, 2024 1:14 AM

I loved her last album of original material, “Bring Ya to the Brink”.

This makes me depressed. Almost all of our great music icons from the 80s are either dead or retired. MTV was such a cultural phenomenon when it started and now those big artists are gone. That era truly is dead.

by Anonymousreply 32June 4, 2024 1:22 AM

[quote]I can't think of a bigger female song from the 80s than Girls Just Want to Have Fun.

I can think of several

by Anonymousreply 33June 4, 2024 1:23 AM

r32 it was forty years ago. Many singers from the forties were either dead or retired by the eighties.

by Anonymousreply 34June 4, 2024 1:23 AM

R32, Whitney, MJ, & Prince are dead, but Madge and Bruce are still alive. O and Lionel Ritchie.

by Anonymousreply 35June 4, 2024 1:29 AM

R29 Where do you live. Girls is huge for sure but people often think it’s a Madonna song. The reverse would never happen for a Madonna song.

by Anonymousreply 36June 4, 2024 1:31 AM

She needs money for legal fees and bail to keep the kid out of jail.

by Anonymousreply 37June 4, 2024 1:31 AM

I always think of Cyndi coming onto the “commercial” music scene about the same time as Madonna ie 1983-84. But, yes, Madonna did work and succeed harder as a mainstream hit artist, while…I mean, I don’t think Cyndi did her career any favors when she almost immediately then became associated with all the TV pro-wrestling freaks business. Yet I always got the feeling that she comfortably did not give a crap what anybody else said or thought about that!

by Anonymousreply 38June 4, 2024 1:34 AM

The WWF shit was a huge career mistake. It was so trashy and stupid.

by Anonymousreply 39June 4, 2024 1:35 AM

she had 9 hits:

All Through The Night

Boy Blue

Change of Heart

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

I Drove All Night

Money Changes Everything

She Bop

Time after Time

True Colors

by Anonymousreply 40June 4, 2024 1:35 AM

r40 The average person, if asked, could name probably 2 or 3 off the top of their head at most.

by Anonymousreply 41June 4, 2024 1:37 AM

I saw this Letterman 80s interview and thought it was as awkward as Crispin Glover's. No wonder she didn't go as far as Madonna despite having a better singing voice.

I never knew about the wrestling thing so I had to google. She is fkin Noo Yawk. Things were different in the 80s you had to be relatable to middle America. She is so New York and I don’t mean upper East side yuppie Jewish girl. This is Hells Kitchen lower East side all day.

Literally no one thinks that.

by Anonymousreply 44June 4, 2024 1:45 AM

I’m not talking about people who were alive when it was out. I’m talking people my age and younger. I used to think it was a Madonna song when I heard it at the mall as a young gayling.

by Anonymousreply 45June 4, 2024 1:47 AM

She grew up in Ozone Park Queens.

by Anonymousreply 46June 4, 2024 1:47 AM

R46 Oh. I don’t know why I thought Hells Kitchen.

She could have branched out a bit and stolen half of Carol Kane's career

by Anonymousreply 50June 4, 2024 2:12 AM

[quote]I’m not talking about people who were alive when it was out.

You're always "not talking" about something.

[quote] somehow she's never become "Cyndi" the way that Liza, Gaga, Madonna, etc. have.

All the more surprising given that her name actually is Cyndi. Who would have thought that Liza, Gaga, and Madonna would have an easier time being known as "Cyndi"?

by Anonymousreply 53June 4, 2024 2:37 AM

They sure ain’t no Whitney.

by Anonymousreply 54June 4, 2024 2:40 AM

Maybe she's ending her music career to devote herself full time to Cosentyx ads.

by Anonymousreply 55June 4, 2024 2:41 AM

His dad is David Thornton.

by Anonymousreply 56June 4, 2024 2:44 AM

I don’t know why I was thinking she was a single mom. She is married to character actor David Thornton and Declan is their child.

by Anonymousreply 57June 4, 2024 2:44 AM

David Thornton got fat. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 58June 4, 2024 10:26 AM

I saw her live about 20 years ago, opening for Cher on one of her many farewell tours. She was excellent and I enjoyed her show more than Cher’s.

by Anonymousreply 59June 4, 2024 10:51 AM

And yet, you make it yours by replying, R52.

by Anonymousreply 60June 4, 2024 11:29 AM

16 yo Bring Ya to the Brink is a good album.

by Anonymousreply 62June 4, 2024 11:59 AM

I'm sure Cyndi's life has been much fuller and saner than those of her contemporaries—and definitely, than some that came after (looking at you, Itchy Cooter). She's earned her place in the entertainment and gay histories. As Marilyn Monroe said regarding Jayne Mansfield when asked about the latter's imitation of her, "There's room for us all."

by Anonymousreply 63June 4, 2024 12:28 PM

[quote]As Marilyn Monroe said regarding Jayne Mansfield when asked about the latter's imitation of her, "There's room for us all."

I thought it was Stevie who said that about Sheryl.

I like her but she there’s no way she can fill those arenas as a tour headliner. Most of her concerts over the last 30 years have been smaller theaters and casinos.

by Anonymousreply 65June 4, 2024 1:10 PM

If it weren’t for AIDS, Madonna and Cher would play stadiums.

by Anonymousreply 68June 4, 2024 1:38 PM

Lauper as at Royal Albert Hall on June 26

by Anonymousreply 69June 4, 2024 2:29 PM

R33, Name them then.

by Anonymousreply 70June 4, 2024 2:39 PM

Most people know who Cyndi Lauper is. She is/was a household name in the US regardless what up thread nay sayers try to argue.

by Anonymousreply 71June 4, 2024 3:00 PM
