Stephen King fans- his new collection, “You Like It Darker” is out
And it’s not a bad batch of tales. Some of them read like older King and may have been pulled out of a drawer. One of the stories included here actually was- started in his late twenties and finished in his 70s.
One tale, “Rattlesnakes,” is a forty-years-later follow-up to “Cujo” and also includes references to “Duma Key” (which I read and remember almost nothing about).
The first story, “Two Talented Bastids,” suffers from really sloppy editing- it’s set in 1978 and mentions Judge Judy and EpiPens but maybe he was going for an unreliable narrator? Or maybe it was indeed just sloppily edited.
Any King fans who can still appreciate him? I grew tired of the character of Holly and that novel about the guy named “Billy” was so-so though I hear “Fairy Tale” isn’t bad.

I wonder if he did better work when he was on drugs.

He says he wrote “Cujo” in a drug-induced haze and it’s a nail biter of a book. Though he may still have had editors back then.
Anne Rice fought for years to not have an editor. Her first book without one, “The Tale of the Body Thief in 1992”, shows an immediate drop in quality and the following books -“Lasher,” “Taltos, “Memnoch the Devil” -didn’t get any better.
Never underestimate the power of an editor.

My taste for Stephen King has never waned. My fave - The Shining. Watched it multiple times. Watched many videos with so called film buffs, going through the film and giving their interpretations.
They can say what they want, and I don't give a fuck if there is merit or not ---- still enjoy it.
I've seen Stephen King on several videos talking about writing.... i just like him.

Cheap theft of the title of Leonard Cohen's last album. *sniff*

He acknowledges Cohen in the notes, R5.
Just as he acknowledges Flannery O’Connor in the story that’s basically a rewritten version of “A Good Man is Hard to Find”.

He lost me at “Under the Dome.” He has not been the same writer since his accident. His books used to be page-turns that I would reread to enjoy the craft. Now, I don’t think they’re even page turners. I’ve abandoned some of his newer novels part way through.

I did not get far into “Lisey’s Story”. Some people call it “Tabitha’s Story” as they think she wrote it.

Rattlesnakes...
[quote]A sequel to King's 1981 novel Cujo, in which a grieving widower travels to Florida for respite and instead receives an unexpected inheritance — with major strings attached.
Ok, someone spill the beans.
Vic, the husband/father in Cujo is the widower.

No one has read it yet?
Supposedly he sees Tad's ghost at the end as he waves to him.
It is supposed to be a very touching read.

I read it but didn’t want to spoil it.

Thanks OP! I just bought it.

OP, your reading comprehension skills are for shit. The story told by the son about his father and his dad's friend is set in 1978, the main body of the story is not. It's the story, "Danny Coughlin's Dream" that will make a great miniseries or movie. I was casting it in my head as I was reading.

BTW, "Fairy Tale" is fucking terrible.

R15, yes. I left the framing story device out as it had no impact on the point I was making. The main character is reading a manuscript of a man saying what happened in 1978 when the mention of Judge Judy and EpiPens supposedly happened in the encounter with the aliens, NOT in the present day.
I didn’t miss anything.

I just finished it. The final story, “The Answer Man” is quite good. That’s the one with a 45 year gap between King starting it and finishing it.
Only story I didn’t care for is “The Dreamers” which feels half-baked and too vague.

His 70s books were the best in my opinion.

He can still write a good yarn.

I'm going to send it back to the library. So far only one DECENT story and I only have 3 left but I don't think I'll bother.

A few of the stories are fucking dumber than shit.

Many of the stories focus on loss and mortality. Stephen is 76 so obviously it's weighing on his mind.

I think mortality has been on King’s mind the last 25 years since the accident.
