Here is the apology email.

Here is allegedly what he said. Insulted Streisand twice.

by Anonymousreply 2May 27, 2024 2:28 AM

Hilarious!

by Anonymousreply 3May 27, 2024 2:28 AM

People are losing their minds.

by Anonymousreply 4May 27, 2024 2:31 AM

All the cocaine has damaged his brain.

by Anonymousreply 5May 27, 2024 2:32 AM

When was this?

by Anonymousreply 6May 27, 2024 2:34 AM

Came to speak at a work conference of ours once. A complete asshole and obnoxious, seemingly going off-topics (and off his rails) mumbling away about everything and everyone unasked about. Sounds par for his course?!

by Anonymousreply 7May 27, 2024 2:35 AM

R4 yeah the audience sounds touchy and woke.

by Anonymousreply 8May 27, 2024 2:36 AM

He's NUTS!

by Anonymousreply 9May 27, 2024 2:37 AM

[quote]Was he drunk?

That was my first question. He's always been known as an asshole but this is a lot even for him.

by Anonymousreply 10May 27, 2024 2:39 AM

This is his Michael Richards moment.

However, it doesn't really matter because he's too fucking old to be cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 11May 27, 2024 2:42 AM

Never cared for him. His schtick got old fast after Jaws.

by Anonymousreply 12May 27, 2024 2:42 AM

[quote] yeah the audience sounds touchy and woke.

Maybe the audience thought they were there to enjoy a fun shark movie, not to get a rambling lecture from some hateful old fart.

by Anonymousreply 13May 27, 2024 2:42 AM

Is it actually a universal belief that 10 year olds should be listened to in regard to changing their gender?

Was this the Cabot Cinema in Beverly, MA?

Dear Cabot Patrons, I am writing to address an important matter concerning last night's event with Richard Dreyfuss at The Cabot. We deeply regret that Mr. Dreyfuss's comments during the event were not in line with the values of inclusivity and respect that we uphold at The Cabot. We understand that his remarks were distressing and offensive to many of our community members, and for that, we sincerely apologize. At The Cabot, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of our community. The views expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect our beliefs, and we do not endorse them in any way. We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for any discomfort it caused. We are taking immediate steps to ensure that such an incident does not happen again. This includes more rigorous vetting of our event participants and more proactive communication strategies to keep our audience informed.”

by Anonymousreply 18May 27, 2024 2:51 AM

From R1:

[quote]also steven spielberg is a genius but an idiot and close encounters only worked because he convinced spielberg to hire him instead of gene Hackman for the part

I'm trying to imagine Gene Hackman in that role.

by Anonymousreply 19May 27, 2024 2:54 AM

Reply, in comments: The Theater should not have to apologize for what a guest says at an event This is not vetted or scripted It’s America & everyone has the right to what the believe in Weather we believe it’s right or wrong in our own eyes. The statements were brief & then went right along with the interview & the host also baited him into answering a question that would get certain individuals object to..

Reply: What does the weather have to do with anything?

by Anonymousreply 20May 27, 2024 2:55 AM

Well, Dreyfuss was perfect in Jaws and even more perfect in Close Encounters, so I guess there's that.

by Anonymousreply 21May 27, 2024 2:57 AM

Makes me sad. Here people come out to escape 2024 for a few hours, only to hear this ancient has been ramble as a way to cope with his bitterness.

Jesus, life sucks these days.

by Anonymousreply 22May 27, 2024 2:58 AM

He'll be 77 in October. Could be dementia.

by Anonymousreply 24May 27, 2024 3:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 25May 27, 2024 3:02 AM

by Anonymousreply 26May 27, 2024 3:02 AM

Some of this explains why his son is such an odious creep.

by Anonymousreply 27May 27, 2024 3:02 AM

Dreyf Ass was, is and will always be an unbearable, self centered cunt.

by Anonymousreply 28May 27, 2024 3:05 AM

If you read the comments it said he came out in a dress and had two stage hands rip it off him.

The interviewer said she had known him for 60 years and in the comments people said she was "egging him on", asking him provocative questions.

You have to wonder, if he came out and said MAGA people are assholes, or whatever, the management would be apologizing for his views having offended anyone in the audience.

Beverly MA is a not exactly Republican.

by Anonymousreply 29May 27, 2024 3:07 AM

More than likely R25. No asshole was safe from Spacey.

by Anonymousreply 30May 27, 2024 3:09 AM

I'm with R4. People are losing it. I bet if you gathered 5 random people from wherever you are right now, they know someone who might be in mental crisis or they are worried about someone killing themselves. I really think the everyone should take a week and completely ignore news and social media. Just texts and calls from friends/family. We need to recover for a bit from all the negativity, fear mongering, actual crises, war, death, poverty, politics and the HUGE wealth gap. But someone or something sure does have everyone whipped up into a constant state of agitation and alarm.

This thread is packed with pearl-clutching MARYs.

Questioning the current mania for childhood transition and pointing out #metoo hysteria is commonplace on Datalounge, not to mention Streisand-bashing, but now you’re gasping in shock because an old man is saying the same things on stage?

Had DL been present, we’d have been munching popcorn and watching the trainwreck unfold in sheer delight.

by Anonymousreply 33May 27, 2024 3:14 AM

I always remember him from a daytime talk show the day of the oscars when Amadeus won Best Picture. He basically said the movie was shit. I don't think it's shit.

by Anonymousreply 34May 27, 2024 3:33 AM

R33 If he was gay he might have gotten away with it. But people are on the lookout for offensive talk from straight white men.

by Anonymousreply 35May 27, 2024 3:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 36May 27, 2024 3:36 AM

People are too fucking sensitive. If you want to be a pearl clutcher, stay the fuck home. R17 complains how he answered her query to be her mentor. She is lucky he took the time to answer at all. All he said was sorry, I dońt have time, I have screwed up people skills, and good luck. What the fuck did she expect_

by Anonymousreply 37May 27, 2024 3:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 39May 27, 2024 3:43 AM

R37 yeah I thought the mentor rejection email was perfectly polite and appropriate. Not a good example of his assholishness.

by Anonymousreply 40May 27, 2024 3:49 AM

He felt very entitled to receive Best Actor for Mr. Holland's Anus of all films.

That said, kinda funny...

by Anonymousreply 41May 27, 2024 3:52 AM

Cokehead said what?

by Anonymousreply 42May 27, 2024 4:00 AM

"Is it actually a universal belief that 10 year olds should be listened to in regard to changing their gender?"

Definitely not. But I think the point is that he felt the need to go off about it at a Jaws screening. It wasn't a round table on contemporary social issues, but he just had to do the angry old guy thing and start spewing for no good reason.

by Anonymousreply 43May 27, 2024 4:04 AM

I don't know what version of Jaws he saw because I don't remember seeing Barbra Streisand, any transgender children or anyone being raped in the film.

Unless there are deleted scenes he knows about that we don't. I mean it was the 70's. A lot of bizarre campy films were made during that decade.

by Anonymousreply 44May 27, 2024 4:08 AM

[quote]If you read the comments it said he came out in a dress and had two stage hands rip it off him.

WHY? What has that got to do with Jaws? In other words, he wasn't goaded into anything with a couple of trick questions, he set this whole anti-woke tirade from the start.

by Anonymousreply 45May 27, 2024 4:13 AM

What an asshole. He’s always been one, just like Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. Gene Hackman’s a dick too, but he’s never been anything but charming and professional when he’s doing press for one of his projects.

by Anonymousreply 46May 27, 2024 4:18 AM

Can you imagine having his money and career and still being such a bitter asshole?

by Anonymousreply 47May 27, 2024 4:18 AM

R47 Have you met ME yet?

by Anonymousreply 48May 27, 2024 4:24 AM

Dreyfuss didn't cause anyone to walk out. They walked out quite on their own. That seems to be the thing now. Graduations recently had a lot of that. I would never walk out. I stay to listen to every word. I want to see with my own eyes and hear with my own ears when people go off script like that. When I was toiling away on corp zoom calls, I loved it when people acted unprofessionally or blew a fuse. I lived for that shit as everything else was so damn boring.

by Anonymousreply 49May 27, 2024 4:35 AM

Me thinks Hackman would have been offered the Roy Scheider role in Jaws. And Richard was very cagey when publicizing Nuts with Barbra on The Today Show so his mixed opinion is not a surprise.

Probably something to do with "Shark Week" too.

by Anonymousreply 60May 27, 2024 5:31 AM

I have not read every post on this thread, so excuse me if this has been covered already. Richard is like 4000 years old, so of course he's going to say ridiculous, out-of-touch shit. But his son, Ben Dreyfuss is honestly one of the most idiotic buffoons on Twitter. I mean, honestly. Pick a random day, search Twitter for Ben Dreyfus, and he will be saying the most unhinged, nepo-baby crap ever. He is such a world class dimwit.

by Anonymousreply 61May 27, 2024 5:37 AM

Rolling my eyes at R52, and all the fucking lemming idiots who liked his post. I mean, straight people explaining to gay people that they don't know it's just a phase is no different than non-trans people trying to dictate to trans people who they are and what they feel. You should fucking KNOW better. Jesus fucking christ, stop pontificating about things you clearly have no knowledge of, other than "vibes" or "feels". Sit your ass down, you ignorant bigoted moron.

by Anonymousreply 62May 27, 2024 5:40 AM

There’s story about when, during the filming of “What About Bob,” a drunken Bill Murray screamed at Dreyfuss, “Everyone hates you! You are tolerated!” and hurled a heavy, glass ashtray at his head, but it missed him. Did it really? I’m starting to think it made contact.

by Anonymousreply 71May 27, 2024 6:13 AM

[Quote] This thread is packed with pearl-clutching MARYs.

Whatever. It’s not exactly rocket science to expect a celebrity who’s addressing an audience about a famous movie he was in to discuss … the movie.

It’s also not rocket science to expect the celebrity to not bring up extremely divisive social issues and take stands on them that are intentionally demeaning to the people he disagrees with.

Do these things really need to be explained to some of you?

by Anonymousreply 72May 27, 2024 6:16 AM

Catch Richard at Nixa in September.

"An Evening with Richard Dreyfuss," the New York City native will share behind-the-scenes insight into some of his most iconic roles including Jaws, Stand By Me, Close Encounters of The Third Kind, American Graffiti, Mr. Holland's Opus and The Goodbye Girl.

The event is 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Aetos Center for the Performing Art's Meridian Title Performance Hall on the campus of Nixa High School.

by Anonymousreply 73May 27, 2024 6:30 AM

[quote]I don't know what version of Jaws he saw because I don't remember seeing Barbra Streisand, any transgender children or anyone being raped in the film.

Now you know how many of us have felt in recent years, with radical 'woke' actors bringing up their pet social causes during acceptance speeches and chastising the audience/viewers for being white and male and what ever else they can blame white men for.

by Anonymousreply 74May 27, 2024 6:32 AM

I love that the only noticeable thing going on for Dreyfus other than this outburst is his mediocre son. And that's only because the son uses social media better than his father.

by Anonymousreply 75May 27, 2024 6:36 AM

[Quote] and chastising the audience/viewers for being white and male and what ever else they can blame white men for.

When did this happen?

by Anonymousreply 76May 27, 2024 6:38 AM

What a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 77May 27, 2024 7:02 AM

R51 Yes. Nothing wrong with trans children as long as the GRS is done once they turn 18 since it's a major procedure that adult bodies can handle a whole lot better.

I'm just worried about the narcissistic wine drinking stage parents with munchasen by proxy forcing their children to adopt a false gender identity for fame or financial gain.

The kind who pretend to be loving parents and run a parenting blog or one of those fake loving family YouTube channels.

by Anonymousreply 78May 27, 2024 7:06 AM

[quote] Is it actually a universal belief that 10 year olds should be listened to in regard to changing their gender?

Yes there is a very progressive/liberal belief that children should be encouraged to pick their ‘gender identity’ and only go through the ‘right’ puberty despite the lack of research on blockers working and the long term effects.

One of Dreyfuss’s sons is a major TRA/misogynist who supports abolishing women’s sports because they’re not inclusive,

by Anonymousreply 80May 27, 2024 7:33 AM

Dreyfuss has come across as very bitter for several decades. His career didn't go in the direction he hoped it would after his initial success in the 1970's. As one poster above noted, Dreyfuss made no secret of the fact that he felt entitled to win a 2nd Oscar for "Mr. Holland's Opus" in the 1990's. His career has been on the decline for a long time now.

by Anonymousreply 81May 27, 2024 8:13 AM

Is Ben Dreyfuss the guy with the flounder face?

by Anonymousreply 82May 27, 2024 8:38 AM

Years ago on original SNL there was a segment called “ grumpy old man.” The church lady guy ( name escapes me I’m old ) would grouse and grumble about how much better but really they were worse — described the old times ending every sentence we “ and we loved it”

Fuck these ungrateful nitwits like Dreyfus’s who got lucky in their career made millions , had a major coke habit, managed to beat it, yet continued to be asshoke of the year and got an Oscar

by Anonymousreply 88May 27, 2024 11:20 AM

I agree with R74

These woke fucks are fine when the Oscars turn into a grueling lecture about unhoused trans POC with tons of misandrist statements or when Queers for Palestine stop people from going to the airport, but if it’s a conservative view they lose their fucking minds.

by Anonymousreply 89May 27, 2024 11:23 AM

Sounds like he's auditioning for a spot on Joe Rogan' or Bill Maher's podcast

by Anonymousreply 90May 27, 2024 12:26 PM

If it's true he really came out wearing a dress then ranted about wokeness, it sounds more like dementia than anything else

However, I have serious doubts that this is what actually went down. No doubt he made some comments that didn't sit well with the audience at large (such as criticism of Streisand and Spielberg) that then was blown out of proportion.

Honestly, I would love to attend a Q&A at which one of the panelists went totally off-script and vented their unfiltered opinions rather than the usual "so-and-so is so brilliant, amazing, iconic" smoke-blowing statements. Even if I didn't happen to agree with them, it would be REAL.

by Anonymousreply 91May 27, 2024 12:36 PM

R82 yes Ben Dreyfuss looks like a flounder. Even Kevin Spacey wouldn’t have tried to molest him.

The one Kevin tried to molest is Harry, who is cute and furry.

by Anonymousreply 92May 27, 2024 12:47 PM

Don't know about Dreyfuss being a dick. If he said women are passive and should not be in charge, the audience should have responded by challenging him there on his views and/or booed him.

As for Spielberg, two stories about him:

I have a colleague who used to be a screenwriter. She said Spielberg is a dick.

I also know people whose relative was a subject of a Spielberg movie. They say he couldn't have been nicer to them.

by Anonymousreply 93May 27, 2024 12:51 PM

Just thought I'd post this because the thought of Dreyfuss being bullied on every set is funny.

On the debauchery behind the scenes of American Graffiti: "Harrison [Ford] and the leader of the gang [Bo Hopkins], one night the two of them got drunk and I was walking by and they threw me into the pool. And that was OK, except they threw me into the shallow end, and I got an egg on my forehead.

On coping with an abusive Murray on What About Bob?: "I didn't talk about it for years. … Bill just got drunk at dinner. He was an Irish drunken bully, is what he was. … He came back from dinner [one night] and I said, 'Read this [script tweak], I think it's really funny.' And he put his face next to me, nose-to-nose. And he screamed at the top of his lungs, 'Everyone hates you! You are tolerated!' There was no time to react, because he leaned back and he took a modern glass-blown ashtray. He threw it at my face from [only a couple feet away]. And it weighed about three quarters of a pound. And he missed me. He tried to hit me. I got up and left."

On clashing with Oliver Stone on W., in which he played Dick Cheney: "I heard [Oliver] say, 'Well, you're so old. You look so old.' And I said, 'I do?'… I needed that money, so I put up with it."

by Anonymousreply 119May 27, 2024 6:58 PM

Did he say anything about Valley of the Dolls......"Miss O'Hara, you're on."

Was he wearing his dress from the second act?

by Anonymousreply 120May 27, 2024 7:18 PM

I wish I had a net work of 5M.

by Anonymousreply 121May 27, 2024 7:29 PM

I’d take him over Murray. Murray is creepy as fuck and cruel.

by Anonymousreply 123May 27, 2024 7:30 PM

R116 I haven't seen anyone outraged. Maybe I missed it.

by Anonymousreply 124May 27, 2024 7:32 PM

Has Billy Porter chimed in about being the first man to wear a dress?

by Anonymousreply 125May 27, 2024 7:33 PM

R117 Seems like a lot of people stayed to the end and liked it.

[quote]American Graffiti: "Harrison [Ford] and the leader of the gang [Bo Hopkins], one night the two of them got drunk and I was walking by and they threw me into the pool. And that was OK, except they threw me into the shallow end, and I got an egg on my forehead

Throwing someone into the deep end (if they can swim) would be a prank. Pushing them into the shallow end is more like wanting to seriously hurt, or perhaps kill them.

R42 Bipolar cokehead says what?

by Anonymousreply 128May 27, 2024 8:21 PM

He was always an ass but he was in some good movies. Now he’s just an ass. Why even talk about trans stuff at a showing of Jaws?

by Anonymousreply 129May 27, 2024 8:40 PM

The dress bit at R115 is Dreyfuss as Taylor Swift, doing a quick change, funny in concept but not execution, as he’s too old to dance or maneuver, and it’s painful to watch. Ironically, the stagehands who struggle to “rip” his dress off look like baby butch lesbians or trans youth.

by Anonymousreply 130May 27, 2024 8:41 PM

I never liked him. He was like that crop of uglies Seth Rogan, Jack Black, and that other fattie who made a bunch of movies for no apparent reason. There is nothing appealing about any of them.

by Anonymousreply 131May 27, 2024 8:54 PM

Off his meds.

by Anonymousreply 132May 27, 2024 8:54 PM

Traumatic brain injury from the swimming pool incident.

by Anonymousreply 133May 27, 2024 9:01 PM

So he really did walk out in a dress.

by Anonymousreply 134May 27, 2024 9:04 PM

How dare this audience of bigots and transphobes find the gall to criticize Richard wearing a dress . An enlightened progressive such as Richard is never exclusively trapped in the couture of his assigned slave name,; not is blocked from displaying elements of his true self.

But only in New Hampshire.

Huzzah for open minded freedom!

Oh, fuck off R89. No one is stopping conservative assholes from getting on their soapboxes at the Oscars, but they know the Oscar crowd doesn’t want to hear it. Apparently it was the same with this crowd. They didn’t come to hear this derp spout off on everything he hates. And the fact that he has to take advantage of a venue like this to shake his fists at the clouds makes him a huuuuge loser. No one was there to listen to him bitch and moan. Go to a Dump rally if you want to go off on everything that upsets your delicate sensibilities and the *woke* agenda. Otherwise, talk about the fucking movie.

by Anonymousreply 139May 27, 2024 9:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 140May 27, 2024 9:27 PM

Dreyfuss is a troll. Don’t feed him, lefties! Attention is the only thing keeping him alive.

by Anonymousreply 141May 27, 2024 9:43 PM

[Quote] Oh, fuck off [R89]. No one is stopping conservative assholes from getting on their soapboxes at the Oscars,

The comparison is actually stupid. When people make political statements at an awards ceremony that’s for, what, ten seconds? You can mute them on your tv if you disagree.

An event you go to live is absolutely 100% different. You’re stuck there, and you may have paid good money for it.

by Anonymousreply 144May 27, 2024 10:31 PM

The mentor rejection letter was perfect- ' If you find out the secret let me know.'

Also he trashed a straight Jewish man. You want inclusivity you got it.

What idiots they are. They should have told the upset audience members to go fuck themselves instead of apologizing

by Anonymousreply 145May 27, 2024 10:32 PM

I don't understand the dress business. Did he think that was funny?

by Anonymousreply 146May 27, 2024 10:34 PM

I wonder if he has dementia.

by Anonymousreply 147May 27, 2024 10:45 PM

I see the misogyny but I didn't read anything he said that was homophobic or racist.

What were those comments?

by Anonymousreply 148May 27, 2024 10:56 PM

I can take or leave him. He's done some good work but don't really care much one way or the other. That being said. If it were a woman talking about a man like that the audience, especially women, would be giggling like Japanese school girls.

by Anonymousreply 149May 27, 2024 11:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 150May 27, 2024 11:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 151May 27, 2024 11:39 PM

I apologize for killing Quint instead of this douche.

by Anonymousreply 152May 28, 2024 12:55 AM

Yes, r62, except NOBODY is "trans", they are people suffering from a mental disorder called gender dysphoria, mostly because they are traditionally gender non-conforming and the abuse and homophobia they encounter makes them believe that they must be the opposite gender that fits the public's notion of gender. They need treatment and compassion, not neo-vaginas!

That moderator was Karen Cadle. She was a big time booker who brought stars like Ernest Borgnine and Ann-Margret to the autograph shows. She seems to be able to handle Dreyfuss and books him at these screenings now. He was a headliner at CHILLER about ten years ago, line for hours and he did everything he could to not be there, he'd get up and walk away, he left for an hour "for lunch" without telling anyone and leaving the line waiting. I saw him scribble his name across an entire movie poster which I'd never seen before. He was so obnoxious, when my friend and I got to about four people from him, my friend after watching all these antics said, "Fuck this, I don't want to meet this asshole" and got off the line. To this day and many years attending, I have never hear anything bad about any guest close to him.

by Anonymousreply 158May 28, 2024 11:37 AM

R157, Certifiable is more accurate.

by Anonymousreply 159May 28, 2024 12:16 PM

Dreyfuss has always been off.

In "You'll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again," Julia Phillips wrote about meeting him at a party during his heyday in the '70s. He was extolling the virtues of "angry sex" by miming slapping someone back and forth while yelling "I hate you, I hate you" and humping air.

"I laugh, but in my head he's gone from a maybe to a never," Julia writes.

by Anonymousreply 160May 28, 2024 12:16 PM

It's almost like he was trying to be offensive. It's all fine and well having opinions, but why yell them at a Jaws screening? People aren't there for politics.

I suppose he's got issues, though.

by Anonymousreply 161May 28, 2024 12:27 PM
