Spencer Garbett- Catalogue Model & Vintage Beefcake
Spencer Garbett was born on December 25, 1969 in Miami, Florida. He grew up between Miami and NYC. He knew he wanted to be an actor from a young age. After high school he attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, graduating in 1992 with a degree in theater.
Appearing on the television competition Star Search, he won the Male Spokesmodel competition six times, but lost in the semi-finals. After Star Search he went on to a successful career as a print model, first for the International Male and Undergear catalogs, and then for Gianni Versace. He was a regular in Undergear and International Male, gaining him a large gay fanbase.
In 1994, he joined the new and fledgling FX cable network as one of the "Road Warrior" correspondents on the Breakfast Time news and entertainment show. Travelling the US, Spencer did live reports and interviews from underwater caves, wolf preserves, and other exotic locales. When "Breakfast Time" was moved to the Fox network, Spencer left the show to pursue his acting career.
Among his appearances was an episode of the sci-fi series Sliders, "The Breeder," which showed him as the towel-clad victim of an alien entity. He also launched his own website back in the early days of home internet, and it was a hit, getting tons of visits daily. Spencer's career and life seemed to have no limits - which is why so many were shocked and saddened when his body was found in his Brentwood home on November 18, 1997, two days after he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 27.

R17 that is what “self-inflicted” means.

A lot of episodes of Breakfast Time are on YouTube. Gotta love the internet. Tom Bergeron was the main host.
Spencer comes on at the 4 minute mark.

I remember seeing him on Star Search. He was handsome and intelligent, and I was shocked when he lost in the semi-finals. I identified him immediately in the International Male publications. Personally, I think he struggled with homosexuality. He was in an industry where gay men thrive. I don't think he was comfortable with the association, and with his own orientation. No doubt he was propositioned constantly at photoshoots, social gatherings and by members of the gay media.

Gays didn’t thrive in acting r21. In modeling, yes. You’re right. But he wanted to be an actor and probably got turned away to the point he got depressed.
He was an intelligent and handsome man. Very well spoken and from what I’ve read, a kind person. But you never know what someone is going through internally.

Was he HIV+? I well remember lots of gay men back in the mid 90s who committed suicide rather than languish in the ravages of AIDS.

R23 if he was it would have come out. He was probably just in a dark place.

I’m getting the impression a certain someone on here has no idea what life was like for gay men in the 90s…

Maybe he was straight and the shame and humiliation of wearing some of those IM get ups was too much to bare.

I remember when he was filming an episode of 'Breakfast Time' as a Road Warrior in my city (Providence) because something big was going on at Brown University. It had to do with some kind of sporting event, and he even demonstrated how the game was played. I was one of the spectators (because I was in love with him at the time, and couldn't believe he'd be in my city) and stood about twelve feet away from where he was filming. He was absolutely stunning in his athletic-wear. When he was done filming, a swarm of female fans surrounded him for autographs. I was so shocked and saddened to hear he suicided.

R25 nonsense. It was very open and lots of fun. Don’t be a scold.

R29 no. It really wasn’t. The 90s were very homophobic.

Sure, there was homophobia. It’s still there today. So what. The world was also very open and fun, if you didn’t put yourself in a box. Don’t define the rest of us by your little island.

The 90s were certainly not an “open and fun” time for gays. The gay spaces were gay for gay men. Gay clubs and bars were amazing. But the world and public? No. Being an open gay man in the 90s was dangerous and could even be a career killer. Jobs could legally fire you for it or not hire you for being gay.
Let’s not try to rewrite history.

R32 I just checked. R31 is the retard. Don’t even bother. He wasn’t even around to know. Always just making shit up.

Is Star Search where the term Spokesmodel was coined?

The retard at it again. Just making shit up. Soon to be greyed out, AGAIN. Never learns.
In the meantime, brush up on the 90s. No, it wasn’t a free time for gay men. We still had fun but it was a very anti gay time, especially after the 80s AIDS pandemic.

I was fired for being gay, R31. They made no bones about it. Do you know what it's like to be unemployed for six months from a ten-year professional position and then have to explain a reason why you were fired? I was definitely not open and having lots of fun.
In college, I was attacked by three men who stripped me naked on the street and used a knife to carve an "X" into the skin underneath my pubic hair. They were never apprehended. I don't think the police had any compassion for me.
Yes, let the good times roll!

This generation has no idea what it was like to be gay in America before the year 2000. Even worse, they do not appreciate the inroads we created for them so they can be open and happy in their lives.

R37 pre-2000? Try pre-2012.

Pre-2012? Try last week. It’s only been safe to be gay for 6 days, so far 🫨

His dad died in 2004 at the age of 55. He was only 20 years old when Spencer was born in 1969.
