Jessica Lange Says ‘Corporate Profit’ Is Overwhelming Hollywood, ‘Industry Now Is Not About the Creative Process’

Jessica Lange spoke critically of present-day Hollywood during a recent interview with Vulture, saying “there should be a law against it” when the topic came up about Warner Bros. Discovery axing already-shot movies like “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme” for tax write-off purposes. This topic became a launching pad for some of Lange’s wider criticisms of today’s entertainment industry.

“We’re living in a corporate world and it certainly has rolled over into the film industry,” Lange said. “So much of the industry now is not about the creative process. Obviously, this is not across the board, but there are many instances where I feel like the artistic impulse is overwhelmed by the corporate profit motive. You look at some of the best films of the past year — what do they have in common? They’re not from America. My favorite was ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’ How often do we get to see a film like that, where the ambiguity of things is never sewn up?”

Is it really any different than when Jack Warner and LB Mayer ran Hollywood?

Except that actors and actresses get paid WAY more?

Boomers like her are the richest cohort in history. This is the hypercapitalist, hypercompetitive world they built.

Absolutely, r1. Listen to Bette talk on Dick Cavett. She still had enormous respect for Jack Warner. They were in it for the money, but they still cared deeply about the product.

Well one bitch dissing the studio heads while another sucks up to them isn't exactly conclusive proof.

R3 May i add that Bette stressed the fact that all those men running the studios were big time gamblers. So with all their keen eye on buisness and profit there still was room for giving an unlikely profitable movie-subject ore actor a chance.

Lange may have a point but that exact same statement has been made by stars and directors since the studio system died in the 1950ies. Directors and actors lamenting that cooperations, lawyers and agencys have taken over and changed the game to a less creative playground.
