Should English be made the official language of the United States?

Why or why not?

by Anonymousreply 6May 22, 2024 9:07 PM

There are five countries in the world that do not have an official language. These countries are the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Costa Rica, and Eritrea. English is the primary language spoken in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Of the 178 countries than have an official language, 101 have multiple official languages (Bolivia 37, India 22 at the high end.)

For all that I don't see the fucking point of legislating an official language. As a requirement for citizenship as some countries do, or basic vocabulary useful for drivers, for example -- I can understand the thinking behind these sorts of things. But the purpose of an official language is what: to arm Karens with more shit to go off on?

It may irritate bigots that people speak other languages than English in the US, but I'm hard-pressed to imagine that it endangers or harms anyone.

There should be an official language. It brings cohesion, a culture. Spanish shouldn’t be catered to. Lack of an official language stifles integration into society. People cannot speak to one another if they’re not speaking the same language. Too many immigrants are bringing their backwards culture with them. That needs to end. The US needs to lay down some ground rules.

Official language, official religion, official sexual orientation , I bet we could add a few more in but these are a great start.

R2, I think when the vast majority of citizens speak a language, it kinda helps define that aspect of culture without anything official.

Making it official would just be another opportunity to bash immigrants.
