Todd McKee was born on November 7, 1963 in Kentfield, California to two successful ad agency professionals. He realized he wanted to act at a young age and began taking drama classes as a teenager. He attended the University of Southern California, and in his Junior year he landed an agent and began going on auditions.
McKee struggled to land anything outside of a single McDonalds commercial for a while, and was constantly rejected for being too tall (it won’t look right on camera opposite most of his female costars) or too preppy looking with “wholesome” good looks. However, in 1984 that would finally change.
In 1984 McKee landed the role of Ted Capwell as part of the original cast on the new (at the time) soap opera, ‘Santa Barbara’. The soap always struggled in ratings but did well enough to stay around and had a cult following. The show was a big hit in numerous foreign countries, however, making its cast huge stars in those countries (particularly the shows younger cast members, with McKee particularly being the face of the cast). McKee graduated from college while a cast member on the show. Despite McKee being a main cast member on the soap, he worked as a Real Estate agent part time on the side.
In 1989 McKee decided to leave the soap after 5 years, and quit his Real Estate job to do a world tour alongside Lane Davies.
In 1990 Todd McKee returned home and was immediately offered a new role. He was offered the role of Jake MacLaine on the soap opera ‘The Bold and The Beautiful’. He took the part and made soap history with a controversial male-rape storyline that also featured Tippi Hedren heavily, as she played his mother on the soap. In 1992, after two years, he decided to leave.
He spent the rest of the 90s doing guest parts on shows and small roles in films. In 1999, at the age of 35, he decided to shift careers and joined Merryl Lynch as a financial advisor in one of their California wealth management offices.
In the 00s he continues doing small acting jobs while working his career. He finally decided to retire his acting career for good when Bradley Bell, executive producer and head writer of The Bold & The Beautiful, contacted him and asked him to return to the soap. He didn’t want to but ended up being convinced to return. He returned to the soap in 2007 and left again in 2009. He then returned again in 2011 and left in 2016. On 11/8/2018 he made a single episode appearance and then returned one last time from 11/6/2019 to 11/19/2019.
