Madonna's 1990 album "I'm Breathless" - most underrated in her career ?

34 years ago this month, on May 22, 1990, Madonna released her studio album "I'm Breathless' (Music From and Inspired By The Film 'Dick Tracy'). Madonna co-starred in the movie with her boyfriend (at the time) Warren Beatty, playing 'Breathless Mahoney'. Her acting was forgettable, but this album was one of her best (IMO). Three songs were written by Stephen Sondheim, and several songs were co-written by Madonna. The album incorporated pop, jazz and swing. The album peaked at #2 on the Hot 200 Albums Chart in the US, but hit #1 in many countries around the world.

The lead single was "Vogue" and the follow-up was "Hanky Panky". Sondheim's "Sooner or Later" won the Academy Award for 'Best Song' that year. "Vogue" topped the Hot 100 Singles Chart in the US, as well the 'Dance Charts', and went to #1 in other countries. In the summer of 1990, her second single "Hanky Panky" peaked at #10 on the Hot 100 Singles, and did about the same in other countries.

What do you all think of the album ? Is it one that's on your Madonna playlist (if you still listen to her) ?

It's terrible except for "Vogue" and "Something To Remember."

by Anonymousreply 2May 11, 2024 4:47 PM

I used to like Going Bananas- is that the title?

by Anonymousreply 3May 11, 2024 4:54 PM

"I'm Breathless" is Madonna's most showtune-y album. It's fine if you like that genre, but it was completely unexpected after the critically acclaimed "Like a Prayer." And then the album concludes with the house track "Vogue," which is jarringly out of place after listening to Sondheim tunes and the kitschy "I'm Going Bananas."

by Anonymousreply 4May 11, 2024 6:12 PM

The album is as forgettable as the movie, despite the Sondheim songs.

When was the last time Dick Tracy was shown on a tv channel or available on streaming?

by Anonymousreply 5May 11, 2024 6:14 PM

Some of the songs like "More" which are supposed to be period just do not sound period at all.

by Anonymousreply 6May 11, 2024 6:15 PM

Madonna released several albums that are cohesive and interesting. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM, ANNE FRANK, OP. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 7May 11, 2024 6:18 PM

I liked What Can You Lose and Sooner or Later.

Pity Warren didn't talk her out of it.

by Anonymousreply 11May 11, 2024 6:34 PM

I don't like show tunes at all but I love this album. In fact, I think it's her second best next to her debut.

by Anonymousreply 12May 11, 2024 7:14 PM

I have this cd. I hope I can finance my retirement by selling it on Ebay.

by Anonymousreply 13May 11, 2024 7:22 PM

I do think this is the most divisive album among her fanbase. Genrally, I think the fanbase has similar opinions on her albums, minus a few. But with I'm Breathless, you either love it or hate it. and it seems like there is no grey area.

by Anonymousreply 14May 11, 2024 7:28 PM

Sondheim was praying for a hit with Madonna and he couldn't even get it with the #1 female recording star at the time. It did give him an Oscar, so there's that.

by Anonymousreply 15May 11, 2024 7:45 PM

Sooner or Later was never released as a single.

by Anonymousreply 16May 11, 2024 7:51 PM

I love it. Love "Now I'm Following You" parts 1 and 2.

Kittens!

by Anonymousreply 18May 11, 2024 10:28 PM

R18 wrong topic. Sorry. Since i’m here - the album was fun for a month. It’s forced camp. Long time ago!

by Anonymousreply 19May 11, 2024 10:30 PM

It’s a solid album that is getting more notice as the years go on. Sondheim was very happy with the way she sung his songs. None of his songs were released as singles and would not have fit with what was on radio at the time. Her Oscar performance was one of the best of all time- vocals, look, overall performance. Very impressive. Love her.

R10, her voice sounds really good there. Better than Taylor has ever sounded.

by Anonymousreply 22May 16, 2024 8:46 PM

A novelty album but anchored down by “Vogue”. She moved pretty quickly onto “The Immaculate Collection” and the whole “Justify My Love” brouhaha pretty quickly. Though I liked “Rescue Me” as a song better.

by Anonymousreply 23May 16, 2024 9:05 PM

1990 was to Madonna what 2024 is to Taylor. Ubiquitous in the public eye through relentless merch-ing.

by Anonymousreply 24May 16, 2024 9:07 PM

I’m pretty sure “Hanky Panky” was released as a single, and they tried to push it as a sort of gimmicky hit.

by Anonymousreply 25May 16, 2024 11:31 PM

This came out at the height of my Madonna obsession. I remember driving around that year it came out listening to it in my car, and loved it all. I think it’s a really enjoyable record all the way through if you’re in the mood. I can see why people dislike it though.

Except for “Vogue” tacked on at the end which sticks out like a sore thumb and shouldn’t be there, it’s annoying.

by Anonymousreply 26May 16, 2024 11:35 PM

It was, R25. Caused a minor controversy.

by Anonymousreply 27May 16, 2024 11:39 PM

I remember being at work at the time when Hanky Panky was getting airplay. We had the radio on in the background, but the room was otherwise quiet as everyone was busy. In the middle of the song, our young lady coworker looked up and in the most confused voice said, "Why does Madonna want that man to [italic]spank[/italic] her?" We all fell on the floor laughing, then spent an interesting ten minutes explaining the concept of BDSM to the poor girl.
I’m pretty sure “Hanky Panky” was released as a single, and they tried to push it as a sort of gimmicky hit.

It was a Top Ten hit.

by Anonymousreply 29May 17, 2024 12:22 AM

I've tried to like it but mostly forget it even exists.

by Anonymousreply 30May 17, 2024 12:37 AM

I was working at a music store (Sound Warehouse) when it was released, and loved it. Played it on the store's sound system, bought it, and just generally played the shit out of it.

Been years and years since I last listened to it, though.

by Anonymousreply 31May 17, 2024 1:30 AM

1990 was a great year for Madonna, flying high off the major success of her 4th studio album, LIKE A PRAYER, which was released the previous year and topped the charts in the US and many countries worldwide.

I'M BREATHLESS peaked at #2 in the US and and UK; #1 in Germany, Italy, Australia.

THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION also peaked at #2 in the US; #1 in the UK, Australia, Canada..

And they were just compilation albums.

The BLOND AMBITION concert tour was a smash hit.

The film DICK TRACY underperformed that summer, but the following spring her documentary TRUTH OR DARE (was a critical/commercial success.

In fact, it was the highest-grossing documentary until the Oscar-winning BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE a decade later.

by Anonymousreply 32May 17, 2024 2:01 AM

Not to mention the controversy caused by her single "Justify My Love" (from IMMACULATE COLLECTION) in late 1990..

This was a major news event.

The song topped the charts and the sexualized music video was banned from MTV but sold like hot cakes when released on videocassette.

by Anonymousreply 33May 17, 2024 2:13 AM
Sondheim was praying for a hit with Madonna and he couldn't even get it with the #1 female recording star at the time. It did give him an Oscar, so there's that.

"Vogue" (by Madonna & Shep Pettibone) and "Hanky Panky" (by Madonna & Patrick Leonard) were the only singles released from I'M BREATHLESS.

The songs peaked at #1 and #10, respectively, in the US charts.

However, I'M BREATHLESS as a whole peaked at #2, so I'm sure many people (like me) were exposed to Sondheim via this album that wouldn't have been otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 34May 17, 2024 2:20 AM

The album was more about cred than sales.

You can tell she did a lot of work on her voice.

by Anonymousreply 35May 17, 2024 10:40 AM

R35, she really did. She sounded great at the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 36May 17, 2024 12:04 PM

I bought this cd at a thrift store last year for a dollar. It’s worth a dollar, I liked it.

Vogue was a strange song to include, it didn’t fit with the rest. Good song though.

by Anonymousreply 37May 19, 2024 4:49 PM

R37, I actually do think Vogue works as a closer on the album. Almost like bringing the audience back to reality that, yes, this is Madonna and here is her "real" music.

by Anonymousreply 38May 19, 2024 5:58 PM

The soundtrack to what amounted to an Elvis movie!
