William R. Moses- from 80s heartthrob to Vintage Beefcake

William Remington Moses was born on November 17, 1959 in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Marian McCargo, an actress and tennis star, and Richard Cantrell Moses, an advertising executive. His parents divorced when he was just a toddler. His mother would go on to get remarried to Republican Congressman Alphonzo E. Bell Jr. in 1970. Congressman Bell adopted William and his two brothers so they were legally his own children too.

He was a star athlete in school and after high school he attended Wesleyan University briefly before dropping out after meeting an agent who convinced Moses to have a change of heart. Moses never had any interest in acting until meeting the agent. Moses was almost immediately cast in a Sprite commercial. After that he was cast in his first film, Choices (also Demi Moore’s first film). Shortly after making Choices, he would land a role that would change his life and be his big break, Falcon Crest. He was asked to read for the role of “Cole Gioberti” and won the role, a role he would play for 6 seasons before leaving.

In 1988 he co-starred with Julia Roberts in Mystic Pizza and then in 1989 he began a string of Perry Mason TV movies series. He would make 17 Perry Mason TV movies from 1989 to 1993 playing an attorney who worked with the title character. After the death of Raymond Burr he would continue to play his character in 4 more tv movies, in 1994 and 1995. In 1992 he would have a recurring role on Melrose Place for 11 episodes. In 1997 he starred in the series Fame L.A., which got canceled fast. He also continued doing guest roles throughout the 90s and 00s in numerous shows, like Touched by an Angel, JAG, LA Doctors, Ally McBeal, Crossing Jordan, Seventh Heaven, NCIS, Cold Case, Tru Calling, CSI: Miami, Bones, Ghost Whisperer, Without a Trace, Castle, Big Love and numerous others.

He had numerous other roles in some small films and tv movies, and from 2005-2008 he starred in nine of the Jane Doe series of TV films as Jack Davis. In November 2022 he joined the cast of General Hospital as Jeff Webber.

While starring on “Falcon Crest” he would also do numerous guest appearances on other shows, such as Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Hotel, and Battle of the Network Stars, with the latter being where he met Tracy Nelson (daughter of Ricky Nelson and Kristin Harmon) and would begin dating. They married in 1987 and divorced in 1997. They had two daughters together. In 2000 he remarried.

I bumped into him at an up-fronts event in LA. So beautiful I practically swooned. Thanks for the memories OP.

by Anonymousreply 15April 30, 2024 12:42 AM

He is no Robert Moses

by Anonymousreply 16April 30, 2024 12:45 AM

Both his brothers are in the entertainment industry too, I believe.

by Anonymousreply 17April 30, 2024 12:49 AM

Oh, Moses, Moses, you stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!

by Anonymousreply 18April 30, 2024 12:50 AM

And that's why my grandmother called her Ham Baxter.

by Anonymousreply 19April 30, 2024 12:52 AM

[quote] He is no Robert Moses

He didn’t exacerbate urban blight and build unnecessary highways?

by Anonymousreply 20April 30, 2024 12:53 AM

Good looking but at the same time rather bland.

by Anonymousreply 21April 30, 2024 1:01 AM

Wasn’t that what was hot back then? R21 you wanted a good looking but pretty bland All American white man in the past. That was the prize.

by Anonymousreply 22April 30, 2024 1:02 AM

His mother Marian McCargo is in Doctors' Wives. This is the opening scene. Marian is the one in the blue dress.

He was the main reason I watched Falcon Creast

by Anonymousreply 24April 30, 2024 1:25 AM

Falcon Crest was a great primetime soap.

by Anonymousreply 25April 30, 2024 1:27 AM

I actually thought he looked even more handsome on Melrose Place as Allison’s boyfriend a decade later than he did on Falcon Crest.

by Anonymousreply 26April 30, 2024 1:35 AM

Falcon Crest is so long ago. I remember liking the character played by Ana Alicia.

by Anonymousreply 27April 30, 2024 1:37 AM

I remember him being Billy R. Moses for a while and then eventually switched it to his full name, William. Probably just looks more mature to be William than Billy.

by Anonymousreply 28April 30, 2024 1:38 AM

R27 we know. It aired in the 80s. It’s a 40 year old show. Same with Dynasty and Dallas and Knots. They’re all “long ago”.

by Anonymousreply 29April 30, 2024 1:39 AM

I was a child when this was on air but remember mother watching it. I don’t remember much about Falcon Crest outside of remembering me liking the theme to the intro a lot. I liked it more than the themes to the other nighttime soaps besides Dallas.

I do remember him and talentless Nepo himbo Lorenzo Llamas on the show and remember Simon MacCorkindale being on it? Or what he on another show?

by Anonymousreply 30April 30, 2024 1:45 AM

Was* he on another show?

by Anonymousreply 31April 30, 2024 1:46 AM

Yes, Simon joined the cast at some point r30. Correct show.

GH really wasted both him as an actor and Jeff Weber as a returned legacy character. They gave him what like 3 episodes. There's so much they could have done. Heather and him alone.

by Anonymousreply 37April 30, 2024 2:12 AM

Ugh. Falcon Crest is a primetime soap that overstayed its welcome. That final season was atrocious. It didn’t help that they changed the theme and opening for that final season, which changed the entire vibe as well. You looked forward to the intro with that whimsical and sophisticatedly poppy theme and seeing the cast. The final intro was so dark and dramatic.

by Anonymousreply 38April 30, 2024 2:13 AM

His brother, Rick (mentioned above), was a guest singer on The Merv Griffin Show numerous times. I was just a kid, but I got the feeling Merv was infatuated with him.

Oh, Moses, Moses, why of all men did I fall in love with a prince of fools?

by Anonymousreply 39April 30, 2024 2:39 AM

I always wondered why he left the show after season 6. Same with Robert Foxworth. The show wasn’t the same without them.

Season 9 saw the loss of a few other big players, like Ana-Alicia. That final season was so bad.

by Anonymousreply 40April 30, 2024 2:49 AM

The shows first season was nothing like the rest of the series. It was a drama with self-contained episodes for its first season because the creator didn’t want it to be another nighttime soap like Dallas. By season 2 that is exactly what it became and they dropped the self-contained episodes and it became a serialized soap opera.

To its benefit.

by Anonymousreply 41April 30, 2024 2:58 AM

The 80s were his vintage years.

by Anonymousreply 42April 30, 2024 3:02 AM

I’m pretty sure Jane Wyman is who got Lorenzo Lamas cast as Lance. She was a close friend to his parents and knew him since he was born. I believe she met his father while working on her show in the 1950s. They remained lifelong friends after that.

by Anonymousreply 43April 30, 2024 3:02 AM

Nah. He looked better in the 90s when he was in his 30s

by Anonymousreply 44April 30, 2024 3:03 AM

“ At the beginning of the ninth season of this show, despite health problems, Jane Wyman was allegedly so displeased with the direction in which the writers and new producers were taking the show that she refused to play the scenes. She asked that they release her from her contract, but the producers refused. A compromise was reached in which they wrote her character out as being in a coma. At the end of the series, when it was determined that CBS was cancelling it, Wyman returned for the final three episodes.”

R38 here. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who hated that final season. Jane Wyman herself hated it.

by Anonymousreply 45April 30, 2024 3:07 AM

R30 Simon MacCorkindale joined the series in season 4 I believe. He left after season 5, and on bad terms. There was a lot of drama behind the scenes on that set and Jane Wyman was a nightmare to deal with for many cast members, especially guest actors. Simon was a main cast member and had stated he was pretty much chased off the show by Wyman. She was allegedly a nightmare and ruthless on that set. And he wasn’t the only one who spoke about Wyman being terrible to deal with.

by Anonymousreply 46April 30, 2024 3:14 AM

R23 fun fact- his mother actually auditioned to play the role of his characters mother on Falcon Crest but was told she is “too old” for the part. Seriously. She then auditioned to play another characters mother and this time was deemed “too young” to be the mother of that character.

She ended up having a guest part as the mother of Morgan Fairchild

by Anonymousreply 47April 30, 2024 3:26 AM

Meh.

by Anonymousreply 48April 30, 2024 3:27 AM

When Ana Alicia's Melissa went crazy, leaping up and down on her bed holding a large butcher knife to her face while shouting, "I'M QUEEN OF THE TUSCANY VALLEY! I'M QUEEN OF THE TUSCANY VALLEY!" as her small child looked on in horror... that was the greatest moment ever on "Falcon Crest."

by Anonymousreply 49April 30, 2024 3:30 AM

R43 she did get him the part. Moses originally auditioned for Lance and he was the top pick for the part. They were about to cast him when Wyman had Lamas audition and demand he be Lance, and he got the role. Because of this Moses was asked to read for Cole instead and he was given that role.

Lamas is also the only actor on the show to appear in all 227 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 50April 30, 2024 3:42 AM

R40 midway through season 6. He didn’t leave after season 6, he didn’t even finish the season. He left about midway into filming season 6 because he was so unhappy with the storylines being suggested for his character. They didn’t wanna let him out of his contract but came to a compromise, he can leave the show and be released from his contract if he agreed to do a guest appearance for season 7. He came back to do two episodes for season 7 and Cole was never seen or heard from again.

by Anonymousreply 51April 30, 2024 3:50 AM

Oh, Ryan Murphy could make a Feud season based off Wyman and some of the cast on Falcon Crest, especially Lana Turner.

by Anonymousreply 52April 30, 2024 4:01 AM

♥️♥️♥️♥️

by Anonymousreply 53April 30, 2024 8:30 PM

I actually liked the way the revamped the theme for the final season. But the season itself … for one thing, it never recovered from the horrible way they got rid of Susan Sullivan in the first episode. (Even though she wanted out, it was thoughtlessly done re the viewers). Kristian Alfonso was a poor fill-in for Ana-Alicia and shouldn’t have been asked to do the 9th season. They needed a bit more of the real Falcon Crest to stay and get involved with Greg Harrison,

Jane Wyman, by the way, wrote her own closing speech.

by Anonymousreply 54April 30, 2024 10:25 PM

I remember him from Mystic Pizza and had a crush on him after seeing it as a teen.

by Anonymousreply 55April 30, 2024 10:31 PM

Mystic Pizza was his peak.

by Anonymousreply 56April 30, 2024 10:46 PM

Did he ever enjoy the homosex?

by Anonymousreply 57April 30, 2024 11:57 PM

His step-aunt married FDR’s daughter. His step-grandfather is the namesake for Bel-Air and the cities of Bell and Bell Gardens. His step-great grandmother was a Hollenbeck…that entire family is tied in the original LA aristocracy (post-Californio era). Very “Chinatown-y”.

by Anonymousreply 58May 1, 2024 12:16 AM

Correction his step-aunt married FDR’s son Elliott.

by Anonymousreply 60May 1, 2024 12:40 AM

R58 step? He was adopted by Bell. They were now no longer “step”.

by Anonymousreply 61May 1, 2024 1:56 AM

R56 everyone has a peak. He was a primetime soap star. Having a popular film as your peak is actually good for a soap star.

by Anonymousreply 62May 1, 2024 1:57 AM

R54 the theme for the final season wasn’t a revamp. It was a completely new song. And it sucked.

by Anonymousreply 63May 1, 2024 1:58 AM

I thought he was cute, and I'm usually not into blond guys.

by Anonymousreply 64May 1, 2024 2:35 AM

R46 What's this about JW being terrible to deal with? I never heard anything about this. I heard she was tough like an old nun and expected everyone to be professional but not mean. In the first season she ripped Lorenzo a new one because he was showing up high on coke. He told that story.

by Anonymousreply 65May 1, 2024 2:47 AM

R65 no one said she was awful to Lorenzo. She knew him his entire life. Fun fact. She was actually very protective of both Lorenzo and William as they were young actors and took them under her wing early on to teach them the ropes etc.

Some others found her awful though, including Robert Foxworth. They didn’t get along his entire run on the show.

by Anonymousreply 66May 1, 2024 2:54 AM

He was his sexiest during the 90s while on Perry Mason

by Anonymousreply 67May 2, 2024 3:02 AM

R63, you must have a tin ear if you can’t recognize this as a revamp of the original theme.
