Navarro's rich father bought billboards of her to display on the roads to Indian Wells. I've hated her since.
Daddy also owns the Cincy and Charleston tournaments. Talk about going out of your way to buy your daughter's way in.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 27, 2024 8:40 PM |
Daddy's not playing the matches, so I don't get your beef.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 27, 2024 8:46 PM |
Mensik with a good win over (not so) Young Grigor in 3.
I've heard talk that he's the most talented of the young Czechs.

"Daddy also owns the Cincy and Charleston tournaments. Talk about going out of your way to buy your daughter's way in."
I totally agree, but the "pure" thing about tennis is that even if parents can get their kids in the door, ultimately results are objective - parents can't produce wins for their kids.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 28, 2024 2:39 AM |
Sometimes I think Rafa signed that Saudi deal because he knows Mary won't be able to go there with him.

Rublev needs to go back to screaming and hitting himself if it means that he's going to play better. This neutered version ain't it.

Question to the poster still angry with Rune over stupid homophobic comments (or perceived to be) he made as a teen:

Rafa is still trying to get match-tough after his hiatus. He could likely be fatigued after today's match. He's gone deeper this tournament than his last. Progress at least. If Lehecka puts him out tomorrow, hopefully a deeper run at Rome (if he plays).

by Anonymous | reply 104 | April 30, 2024 7:36 PM |
Wow, Keys has never been strong on clay, so was this more a matter of Ons losing?
Good for Felix. He seems like a nice fellow, but he just doesn’t seem to have the killer instinct or wild self-belief or whatever it is that makes champions.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | April 30, 2024 7:55 PM |
I think that Felix has modeled his demeanor on the gentlemen champions of the past: Laver, Ashe, Borg, Wilander, Edberg. Those players made their marks without all the showboating we see so much these days.

Gauff is auff. Honestly, I think she still hasn't completely gelled, despite the Slam win. She's always had a large range of play, thus can beat and lose to a wide variety of players. But, she really hasn't had a notable result in a while.

by Anonymous | reply 130 | May 1, 2024 3:56 PM |
Why couldn't Carlitos have played like this yesterday?
I wanted Struffi to go all the way!
If Carlitos loses, I think it's karma for the Madrid crowd. They were lousy last night. I totally get that it was a unique occasion - possibly Rafa's match in Madrid - but for them to react in total silence to some amazing shot-making by Lehecka was just 'not tennis' IMHO. Yes, you cheer and holler for 'your guy' but you also acknowledge the other guy's great efforts with polite applause.

by Anonymous | reply 182 | May 3, 2024 10:02 PM |
you're right of course, R182 -- from purely competitive perspective
by Anonymous | reply 183 | May 3, 2024 10:06 PM |
FAA had 1 walkover, 2 retirements. I can't remember that happening before at 1k event. I think the pressure has never been greater. The money has never been bigger, the calendar is packed, everyone wants to go to the Olympics and the Saudis are wrapping up a deal that will change the game forever. In the future, no one is going to care about "Masters", only the slams. That's what Carlos is focused on.
The appearance fees are bigger than the purse these days. Carlos scooped up 2m in S.A for a half hours work before he split 12m with Nadal to play a half- speed exhibition in Vegas. Who needs Rome? Or maybe he's injured or maybe he's the new Del Potro and not the new Nadal.

So, they're both headcases, so its a tough call. If their both playing their best I say Rublev takes it, but if Rublev psychs himself out, then FAA might have a chance he holds himself together (doubtful).

Do you think Alcaraz lost against Rublev because he's injured, or because he played like shit, or both? I personally think both. He has said before he thinks about his injury all the time. I think it affects the play.

Sinner's MRI showed an inflammation in his hip. Not surprised. During his last match, or maybe it was the match before, he was yelling to his team that he was in pain and asking them what to do. They told him to keep playing. That makes me wonder if his team perceives him as some kind of baby and were trying to push him through stuff. He had a knee issue in Monte Carlo, too.

Why do these players always play the match of their lives against Alcaraz, then play like shit (more like their actual level) the next match? It happened when Alcaraz lost to Zverev and now Rublev. Maybe it is part unluck? But I also think Alcaraz has been playing like shit since Cincy last year, so it's probably both. Alcaraz is in a slump, but even his slump level should be enough 90 % of the time to win... unless he faces a player who is playing unreal tennis.

Awkward stuff from FAA at times during Rublev's speech, standing there like a statue as an emotional Rublev compliments him. That few stuck around to hear them speak made it a little sadder, but the embrace Rublev got from the young guy in his box was quite warm.

Not old dwindling Novaxx, R245. Four tournaments this year ending in losses to Dardi, Demon, Ruud and Sinner. Ruud, Tsitsipas and Rublev have better records overall and on clay this year. They're better bets than Beelzebub.

Unpopular opinion, I realize, but I will miss Thiem more than Rafa. I never really connected emotionally to Rafa, though I admire him greatly.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | May 8, 2024 1:15 AM |
I won't miss Thiem that much.
I wonder what his HOF chances are. One Slam winners aren't automatic. The ones who make it generally have multiple other Slam finals - which Thiem does. A No. 1 ranking helps - Thiem peaked at No. 3. From there, it's a combination of overall performance at Slams, overall tournament titles (the bigger the better), wins over top players of their generation, and representing one's country - Davis Cup at least used to be a factor; not sure now, but the Olympics is a bigger consideration than it once was after returning as a full medal sport in 1988.
So, I'm not sure. The Slam plus three other finals is a huge step. His overall Slam performance is limited (partly due to injury) and while it's pretty good, it's not great. Compare to someone like Sabatini who has one Slam and two other finals, but has like 15 other SFs and even more QFs - i.e., deep runs. Same for someone like Roddick - who has a Slam, 4 more finals, and 14 more SF and QFs - plus a No. 1 ranking and 32 overall titles, including 5 Masters. Outside of his win and finals, Thiem has only 4 additional deep runs. Thiem's tournament total - 17 - isn't that great, and he only has one Masters. But still, the Slam win and three other finals are big bona fides. It will be interesting to see if he makes it.

I can't believe that hurt anti-Rune girl is still spouting her hysteria. I don't think she ever addressed another poster's question to her about any of the players endorsing/participating in any Saudi events. She never addressed if Rune's doubles partners are also "homophobic" by association. Not sure I want to read her childhood scars views.
Competitive players at all levels emote during stressful match moments. (When I was younger, I'd occasionally call myself the "f" slur under my breath if I hit what I thought was a wimpy shot. Rarely, but it happens, and it means nothing.) IF Rune is eventually shown to contribute to or endorse anti-gay policy, or maybe some hidden mic reveals, THEN I would concede.
Another of her tactics is to keep linking his younger controversial incident. Proves nothing. When others note his young age, she'll mock the "youthful indiscretion" observation. She shouldn't as people are often different from age 18.
I have a mostly unsubstantiated feeling, hunch, that eventually it might be revealed that Rune himself is gay. Super slight chance.
Damn, I respond far too much to this tortured lady.
