1996 Ford F-150 (pick up truck for those who don't know), 9th Generation. I have babied it since the original purchase date . Every time I take it to Ford for service, the young mechanics are happy to inspect it as they don't often see models of this vintage. The dealership has offered to buy it back from me for the original purchase price I paid (USD $14K). I'm keeping it.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 20, 2024 7:22 PM |
R48? I had one of those!
I ended up having to buy a cheap car at an auto auction in 1989 (long story) and paid $500 for it. It was a 4-speed automatic, but only two of the gears worked (2nd and 4th), and it wouldn't go above 45mph. I had just started college (at 30) and I drove it like that for two years. Even on the back roads, I always had a long line of cars behind me (cursing me, no doubt) by the time I got to school.
The day I finished my degree, I drove it straight to the junkyard, and they gave me $50 for it.
Now, I drive a 2016 Nissan Frontier. I bought it with 78K on it, and I hope I'll never need to buy another vehicle.

2024 Subaru Cross Trek.
I always baby my cars and take excellent care of them...
My first car was a 1989 Subaru XT - never had a problem with it. Paid $11K for it. It was 'Ruby Red'. Sold it to my cousin in 1999 when she graduated High School for $2K - she totaled it within a month.
My second car was a 1999 VW 'Bright Blue' Beetle - nothing but problems the day after the warranty expired. Couldn't wait to get rid of it. Bought it for $16K and traded it in 8 years later (the Scion dealer told me they had more than enough VW Beetles they couldn't get rid of - no one wanted them as they were nothing but problems). I think I got $4,000 for it on the trade-in.
My third car was a 2007 Scion XT - it was perfect for getting where I needed to go back then. I had very few problems with it. Paid about $15K, minus the VW trade-in.
In 2017, I sold my Scion for $7k to a coworker (he totaled it within a year) and went back to Subaru - leased a blue Crosstrek.
In 2020, turned that car in and got a 2021 gray Crosstrek under lease (there wasn't much inventory to choose from - color choices were white, gray or black).
Just three weeks ago, I turned that car in and got my 2024 'Sapphire Blue' Crosstrek. Love it.
Looking back on the past 35 years, I should have stuck with Subarus (though the models were ugly in the 90s and 2000s). Never had a problem with any of them.

Elderlez, the Cayenne is even more of a tank!
When I traded that in for the Audi Q5- it was like I was driving a feather.
Macan is a very cool car and I knew I would get one when they finally gave it the Cayenne styling on the bumper and the interior.
I am probably going to get a 2024 in Sept, unless its worth it to wait for 2025.

2014 Cadillac ELR (plug-in hybrid) and 2019 Audi A3 cabriolet. Had 2 EVs but moved from my house to a condo and charging at public stations was such a hassle (and expensive) that I got rid of both of them. Love the Cadi, Audi is ok. Next cars will not be from "luxury" brands, everything is an option, expensive and crazy expensive to maintain. Too bad not many convertibles available anymore except tiny or outrageously expensive.

Just got a 2020 Nissan Rogue SV after driving a shitty 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid since 2018 with a failed hybrid battery module and no radio (navigation/audio was replaced before i got it by original owner and when I changed the regular battery, had no way to know what the four digit code was to get radio/cd player back to working).
I've had the new car for a week and what a difference! It reminds me of the 90s when I briefly had a Buick Skylark (with all the trimmings). I drove down to Emeryville today to go to a store I haven't been to for about a year (about a 65 mile drive one way), and it wa stop and go traffic on the way home over the Richmond Bridge for about 10 miles. Switched on the adaptive cruise control, and the car did all the work of braking, slowing down, speeding up, stopping (if needed). It was so amazing. Also, no fumbling for key fob to lock/unlock doors, remote start, heated seats, heated steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity plus Android Autoplay and power liftgate that i can just flip my foot under the bumper twice to open hands free.
Love this car! it looks good, drives very smoothly and the seats are so comfortable too.

2024 Nissan Leaf. Well... guess it's 2023 as the production of this car stopped last year. It's brand new though, got a good deal on it, swapped in my old car (Kia Soul 2019) and paid the rest. It has "old" technology, but it's good enough for me. It has everything I need... leather seats, Bose speakers, lane assist, cruise control, led lights, camera, sensors etc. It has a range of 385 km... tests show the range is about 400 km in summer, and about 300 km im winter. As I said good enough for me. There's a new Kia released this year... the Kia EV3, which is interesting, prise-wise. Might buy it next year. The new generation of Leaf shows promise too, but won't start production until 2026. Might swap my car for the new gen when it's available.

[quote] Subaru Legacy - Good car, hate the CVT
I need new car and thought of buying a Subaru - my friend is a Crosstrek fan for 20 years. But the Subaru engine … I just hear too much about them. I also get confused because I see different versions of one car - like I’ll see different iterations of Forester that look completely different from each other which confuses me.
I’m very confused when there are so many versions of one model. You go through “build and buy” on the website and it’s too confusing what comes with what - which packages they offer, what’s standard, what’s optional. When I bought my car there was base, premium, and luxury. I got premium and it came with what I needed. Luxury wasn’t much more than a better sound system, some kind of cruise control that’s better than the one the one I have. It wasn’t very confusing. .
Now all cars seem to have 10 different types - base, limited, touring, sport, premium, luxury, ultra, hybrid packages and then add ons.
And Lwhy should I have to add power liftgate? That should be standard by now. Same with adjustable memory seating - that should come with every basic car package. Once something has been around for 20 years it shouldn’t be optional anymore, it should be standard. And all cars should come with the best brakes available so everyone can be as safe as possible.

I have a 2023 Mazda CX-30 Turbo. The turbo engine makes all the difference if you like to drive fast (guilty) and it handles SO well.
[quote]but the next car will probably be electric. Sigh, no Porsche for me.
I think the new Macan just not coming out is an EV. You CAN have both!
by Anonymous | reply 128 | May 2, 2024 7:22 PM |
Yes, the new Macan is an EV despite them calling it a turbo.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | May 2, 2024 7:30 PM |
I’m not looking to buy an EV right now. I’ll either get an ICE or non-plug in hybrid. I used to be an early adapter but not anymore. Live and learn.

I'd do a hybrid but not an EV. My brother's Tesla (a few years old) already had to have the battery replaced, under warranty but still.... if you have to replace the battery without a warranty it can cost up to $20K.

R129, Porsche's had a "Taycan Turbo" for five years now, despite the absurdity of the naming convention. (Thankfully limited to them, it seems.)

Mother's hand-me-down 1987 Cutlass Supreme. I had to take the keys away from her when she turned 90, she was a menace on the roads. She's gone now, I simply can't bear the thought of parting with it. It still smells of Virginia Slims and Shalimar.

I have a 2016 Audi S3 and 1984 BMW 633CSi. I bought the latter a decade ago intending to fix it up, but I've driven it maybe 500 miles that entire time. (It needs a trickle charger to retain any battery power, which is literally impossible to use in my apartment building's underground garage – most lack any sort of electrical outlet, unless it's hooked up to an EV charger of some sort.) My Audi has less than 35,000 miles, but both of my parents coincidentally have Audis, and my mom's more recent (2021) Q3 has the whole suite of driver aids I *wish* I had!
I need to replace the Audi, but I haven't been able to get past the fact that I somehow have the ability to negotiate legitimately huge discounts on cars – during normal times, that is. I haggled a $7K discount on the S3, *and* Audi had a 0% financing promo at the time. I even managed to get a $6K discount on my mom's car, but that was a nick-of-time thing: the post-pandemic car shortages started within less than a week, and all discounting evaporated.

OP: shouldn't the title of your post be, "What kind of car do you drive?"

A 2017 Chevy Bolt EV.

A 2020 Mercedes C300. I bought it literally the first week of the pandemic. I was going to go for the E350, but for some reason decided on the cheaper car because everything had started to shut down and I felt I wasn’t going to be driving/enjoying the nicer car for awhile. I was right, I have less than 25k miles on it after four years.

R124 do you still have the 1969 Jaguar XKE Coupe? Thats a valuable car now if you do. The 77 Cadillac Seville is also a great car, and appreciating fast now if you still have it and its in reasonable to good condition

R134 You are also sitting on an appreciating asset if you still have it. Good ones are going for $12-15K on Bring a Trailer, and other outlets

The Cutlass was the best-selling car back in the day, until Honda came in and took over and American cars faded into the background.
R141 I wish I still had that Jag. Even the Seville. But that was a long time ago.

R127- I drive a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. The car was redesigned for the 2018 model year. The engines in this generation have been much more reliable.

True, but BaT is legit expert-level shit, and for something like a crappy '80s Oldsmobile to end up on there, it'd have to be something akin to a unicorn (e.g. a car with literally almost zero miles & basically sitting untouched for 40 years). I tried selling a car on there once, and despite it being a limited-edition Shelby Mustang of recent vintage, they require BATSHIT amounts of photography and documentation for literally almost any aspect of the vehicle. Even once a listing is posted, prospective buyers routinely demand videos of the vehicle in operation, tire-tread reading levels (!), and photos of LITERALLY every single flaw in the paint – even if it's invisible to the naked eye unless you're standing six inches away.
I finally gave up and said fuck it: I stopped responding to all the increasingly entitled demands, and the high bid was well below my reserve price.
Carsandbids.com is similar but WAY less moneyed and mega-anal about any & all vehicle flaws.

I have friends up north who buy the worst cars and then spend lots of money getting them repaired. Right now they have an ex-police Taurus (junk) and a high mileage Grand Cherokee that is always in the shop. I found a 2016 Honda Accord down here that’s a beauty and a decent bargain. Miles are a little high but they don’t go anywhere, especially in winter. I’d even drive it up for them, if they just write me a check for the dang thing.
I would buy it for myself, but I don’t need two cars, especially with insurance through the roof. I’m content with my RAV 4.
Ooh, it is pretty though, sparkly burgundy.
