Can someone explain to me the appeal of this franchise? I understood the appeal of the first one because it was so surprising and unusual, but it's been going for more than half a century now. What else is there left to say? Unlike "Star Trek," for example,it doesn't seem to allow for many interesting permutations of the original formula.
OP clearly didn't watch the most recent trilogy. It was excellent.

Nothing beats the original. And don't like the CGI'd apes regardless how realistic they might be.

I missed the trilogy but am interested in this one. I hope it’s as fun as the 1968 original and steers clear of the sadism that overtook the old series and that Tim Burton celebrated in his mess.

You should watch the recent trilogy R5. It explains how the story progressed to this point of this movie. It was pretty good. Nothing like the Tim Burton version.

They’re apes. It’s in the title.

The appeal of the franchise? I was 15 when the original film was released. I came in my pants in the theatre looking at Charlton Heston's naked behind. Literally.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes was my favorite.

They don't care about interesting permutations. Hollywood has been creatively bankrupt for decades. It's purely an accounting decision.

^ I think that is the actual surprise to me. I had not realized that the previous movies were such commercial successes. Somehow they all flew under my radar.

The embrace of racism by all parties involved, including the audience.

R1- No it wasn’t.
Only Planet Of The Apes 🦍 ( 1968) is worth watching and maybe Escape From The Planet Of The Apes 🦧 ( 1971)
The 21st century reboots are as atrocious as the reboots of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 🏭.

The trilogy that sets this up was excellent. I’m really excited to see this. It’s been a few years since the last one.

R13 is wrong. Only the Tim Burton movie is terrible.
The new trilogy (now a quadrilogy?) is exceptionally good.
