Karen Wolek works the Llanview station when Larry is on nights at the hospital.

That Donna Beck creature is probably trolloping around the Pine Valley station right now waiting to greet you.
Probably has that harlot Estelle La Tour in tow too.
Likely Billy Clyde Tuggle is somewhere nearby.

OLTL was the better soap! More memorable stories and characters. Agree or disagree?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 10, 2024 8:40 PM |
OLTL was the red-headed step child of ABC for years. ABC never treated it with respect, it was just the filler between AMC and GH. I'm not even sure that Agnes gave a fuck about OLTL after she sold it, but AMC was always her "baby". I always thought that was wrong too. Early AMC was much better than what it would eventually become, but it was never better than early OLTL.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 10, 2024 8:58 PM |
I was never a fan of Slezak. She went too hammy in most of her stories for my taste. I liked it when Pat Ashley was the OLTL star.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 10, 2024 9:10 PM |
I liked OLTL more but I can concede that AMC was better. One of OLTL's weakness was seeing how nearly everystory was going to interact with slaystack. She became just a little too much. My favorite was Loving. Which got all the respect and attention a network could give a show but it never took off like the rest. Never was a big fan of GH except for the Diana Taylor murder which I've always considered the best storyline of any soap. In the early days of her playing Heather Robin Mattson was a revelation. The Diana Taylor murder involved nearly the whole cast and lasted over a year. When you found out who did it you gasped. Because they led you to believe, for months, that Heather did it.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 11, 2024 12:08 AM |
I was a massive OLTL fan and despised the overrated AMC. (I did think AMC was decent in that 88-89 timeframe) My mom loved it from the late 70's until 1984. AMC was the only soap she watched.
Granted I am 44 and was very young at the time and basically watched with my grandparents.
OLTL's zeniths were probably 1978-82 then 85-90 and 93-95.
I found OLTL to be the most underrated soap of all time quite honestly.
I did watch Y&R somewhat consistently and had brief addictions to GL and GH in the late 80's.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 11, 2024 12:32 AM |
I watched most of the soaps here and there in the 80s and early 90s, but AMC was *my* show. I watched it from 1982 until the (very) bitter end. I hate that Frons fucked it up. It deserved to be one of the last soaps standing, and could have been easily fixed. The last few months of the original and the ill-fated Hulu reboot felt like the “old” AMC.
At least there are still episodes on YouTube. I often watch classic episodes, especially the storylines with my favorite soap actress ever, Kate Collins.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 11, 2024 1:34 AM |
I think Ryan's Hope was ABC's red headed step child. You couldn't deny it was probably the best acted and certainly the best written but it never really was a ratings smash. Even among the NY soaps, it was never really got what it deserved from the network. But all those Emmys RH won annually were more than enough for ABC.

OLTL was fire when Andrea Evans and Fiona Hutchinson drove the story. The Gordon sisters came along and they became too much of a focus. When Andrea left, it was the never the same for me.

OLTL at its best was the greatest soap of all time. They had some fantastic writers in the 1990s throughout the end of their run. (The exception to that was there were some clunker years when Jill Farren Phelps was at the helm but she ran every soap she touched into the ground)

by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 13, 2024 5:28 PM |
They should have never fucked with the faux Silver character. I remember watching it and her and realOpal would bring about all the screaming, off the couch reactions. Sometimes I just wonder about their casting decisions. They should have had a group of fans helping them. AMC's biggest fuck up, and I LOVED Cliff and Nina together, was ending the Cliff and Angie romance. It was such a slow burn story. They just didn't throw them together. It was two grieving friends slowly falling in love.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 13, 2024 5:36 PM |
R81 Erica had an exact doppelganger in the form of a deranged fan named Jane Campbell in 2011.
It was an AMC attempt at a James E. Reilly-style storyline, but it turned out to be a big stinker of a storyline.

I was a big AMC fam when in collge - 1980-1984. Jenny, Greg, Liza ("you is a snake!") Colby, Jesse, Angie... Carrie Sanders, Tad smoking copious amounts of pot.
Didn't Dr. Joe come close to having an affair with the abused wife, Carrie's stepmother? I think she was Lenore? Carrie married a Wallingford didn't she or someone adjacent to Pheobe?
Oh my gosh and Sybil Thorne's murder, the arrival of Nina's mother (didn't Daisy originally go by the name Jacqueline?). And poor, poor Devon Shepherd - that character bounced from one unhappiness to another (I think the writers hated the character or the actress).
Yikes, I'm going down a rabbit hole... Brooke and Tom, many more whose names I can no longer recall.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 13, 2024 8:36 PM |
Tom in his prime MMM MMM MMM His brother Sean was even hotter. Sean and Daisy together were hysterical. Oh, and the way Sean used Devon. LOL I loved Sean and Erica's scenes together they were some of the best on the show. It was two schemers who saw right through each other. Daisy was the first Viki on OLTL. Would have loved to see her continued take on Viki. Instead of the hambone slaystack.

I think what hooked me on AMC was how they (for many years, anyway) were able to balance the funny, camp characters and storylines with serious, social issue stories that seemed natural and logical to the characters.
Of course, as in any long running show, they had missteps, but in the AMC Golden Age, it just couldn’t be beat. There were many great years, but 1986-87 always stands out to me as classic soap.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 14, 2024 2:06 AM |
I even liked that 88-89 era and I was a OLTL fan- by far ( I overall hated AMC)
I really enjoyed Brooke and that Laura/Drunk Driving storyline and Cindy/Stuart. And for some reason I remember LOVING Nico and Cecily?

by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 14, 2024 2:10 AM |
I watched OLTL occasionally, I liked Dorian, and uh..yeah, Dorian. Hated frumpy Viki and those dumpy Buchanan men. Tina was fun. The Fraternity Row stuff was fun for a while, and of course watched for uber twink Ryan Phillippe’s gay storyline..but AMC did that storyline better with cutie pie Kevin and Kelsey (RIP Ben Jorgensen) and won the Emmy for Best Writing for it.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | April 14, 2024 2:25 AM |
Ryan's Hope at least until Delia's kidnapping by a gorilla was really good. It was a neighborhood middle class Soap but the producers had to mess with the plot to generate ratings.
Also Malcolm Groomed as Dr Pat Ryan . Let's play doctor

Cali Timmins as Maggie was incredible on Ryan's Hope. It was her first acting gig and she stole each and every scene she was in. She was supposed to replace Andrea Evans as Tina but a certain piece of ham nixed it.

All- refresh my memory about Cali- When was it rumored that she would play Tina on OLTL, and why did she not?
I vaguely remember that this was 2000 or so?
She would have been one of the very few that could do a decent job.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | April 14, 2024 2:03 PM |
Sarah Buxton. Cynthia Preston. All names mentioned as a Tina Recast. What about the other Mindy’s? Barbra Crampton or Kimberly Simms? I think Cali was in talks right after AE left and before they found Karen Witter (who turned out to be a great version too!)
by Anonymous | reply 103 | April 14, 2024 3:57 PM |
R94- Life at Cortlandt Manor was indeed an amazing storyline followed closely by the Adam/Brooke/Dixie triangle with Tad thrown in. Adam was at his most dastardly when he gaslit Dixie in the hopes of getting his son all to himself. That storyline was a total banger as well. I started watching AMC as a kid in 1986 and was obsessed with it until 1998 or so. When AMC was good it was GOOOOOD.

by Anonymous | reply 116 | April 14, 2024 10:22 PM |
R77, the poster was named Ivana Kipling, not Ivan Kipling.
The “real “ Silver was first played by a very prety brunette named Rosalind something. She was eventually replaced by Claire Beckman, a decent actress but bland. Neither Rosalind or Claire looked like a former archaeologist, which Silver apparently was.

Claire Beckman was fine as Sabrina.
Mary Ellen Stuart was fucking fake and dreadful as Frannie. She was a tremendous letdown after Julianne. So many possibilities that could have happened, but Mary Ellen was about as interesting as a salesgirl at Macys.

Even when ABC was the #1 daytime network, their soaps always looked somewhat cheap and washed out. Also the ABC soap didn't have good background music. I guess it wasn't until the 90s that ABC caught up with CBS and NBC production values.

I wish realJenny, realBrad, Tim, and realSam had stayed longer. They brought the show back to live when it was just the Craigs and Woleks sitting around playing Mahjong. The producers must have shit the bed when they immediately established a huge fan base, got the show ratings rising, and giving the writers new opportunities . . . . then they leave. Bryn Thayer sucked ass.

I have always been curious about Claudette Montgomery on AMC, since she was before my time. She was Paul Martin’s stepdaughter, Erica’s rival for Nick Davis, and she killed Eddie Dorrance. I have never seen footage of her, but it sounds like she was in the middle of everything for a brief period (1978-80 or so).
And her mother Margo had a facelift on television a decade before that old bag on Y&R.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | April 16, 2024 5:50 PM |
R158, what fun, posting Claudette Montgomery. She is before my time, but thanks to the interwebs, I read about her character and then Eddie Dorrance (he was a pice of work too!). From Wiki...
Eddie Dorrance: Manager of singer Kelly Cole who got her addicted to drugs. He raped Brooke English, which resulted in her pregnancy and abortion. He was hated by Lincoln, Myrtle, Phoebe and almost everyone else. He was friends with Langley. He was later murdered by Claudette Flax Montgomery.
Is there an eldergay who knows HOW Claudette murdered Eddie? And, um, how friendly do we think Eddie and Langley really were? h'mmm...

Margo and Claudette were also before my time, but I’ve always been interested in reading about their storylines. There aren’t even that many photos of them online. An older friend of mine back in the day said the first Claudette was good but the second was terrible and looked about as old as Margo (her mother).

Carol Burnett was a huge fan and would often give updates on the show during the Q&A. Once she related how Margo was trying to adopt a baby and then pass it off as her own in order to keep Paul. The audience had a good laugh about that one.

What are people's thoughts about Kelli Maroney as recast Tina? There are only a few seconds of her playing this part on YouTube. She was in Ryan's Hope and then transitioned into an 80s scream queen for a couple of years.

I know I'm in the minority but I liked everyone who played Tina. Cali would have been absolute dream casting but you can't have it all. I forget her name but this was actually my favorite Tina. Even above Andrea. I think Jean Randolph was my favorite OLTL character EVER. She did everything were were screaming, from the couch, for Viki to do for years. But I really liked this Tina. This season is awesome. Slaystack does it with a minimal of ham.

by Anonymous | reply 172 | April 18, 2024 1:22 AM |
That was Krista Tesreau playing Tina in that clip. I don’t think she lasted long? She was great as the original Mindy on Guiding Light—I wonder why they never brought her back? She wasn’t great as Tina. I was never a big OLTL watcher, but I did like Karen Witter as Tina when I did watch. Didn’t they even have butch Marcia Clark (also from GL) play Tina for a hot second?
And yes, Cali would have been great as Tina. I wish they’d brought her on AMC as a recast or new character. She had a lot of magnetism and was often underrated, like the divine Robin Christopher as Skye on AMC. She’s one of my top 5 AMC actresses. I hate that ABC “de-Chandlered” and made Skye a Quatermaine.

I wish the spooky, original Dorian had stayed. There was no humor in her psychosis.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | April 19, 2024 9:12 PM |
The OG Dorian was fascinating -- so cunning, so indifferent to the pain of others, so able to present herself as blameless. R188 is right -- it was spooky. But I was more entertained by Robin's Dorian -- she brought every scene she was in to a new level. She created a Dorian that was tormented and needy, and poured all that need into desperate acts. At the same time, she made Dorian funny. She was electric. I don't think a psychotic character (as the original Dorian was) can last over time...she's just too evil.

I have very rarely heard a kind word about Strasser, however Slezak and Depaiva loved her, as did the horrid actress Kristen Alderson.
Depaiva even visits her in Ohio.
So she cannot be THAT bad.

OG Dorian. In a six month period: Lied on medical charts that killed Larry's fiance, kept her sister locked in the attic, counsled the woman whose husband she was having an affair with; telling her not to give him sex. Helped Kathy Craig kidnap Joe and Viki's baby, withheld Victor's pills, actually waving them in front of his face, teasing him, and watching him stroke out. Wresting control of the Banner from Vikstaklake. Am i forgetting anything?
Just her reflection in the maternity ward window, near the end, was enough to spook you. Something was coming LOL.

Strasser was apparently a neglected or abused child, and by all accounts is very sensitive. But various costars have said nice, or diplomatic things about her.
I think she was daytime's answer to Shelley Long. Someone who always wanted to do their best and would fight battles over the smallest things.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | April 21, 2024 4:19 AM |
I know Strasser had her signature roles on AW and OLTL, but she was also briefly on AMC between those stints. That was before my AMC time, and I have never seen that role discussed much or any clips. It’s odd to me thinking about her and Lucci being on the same show. Did they have scenes together? I remember her Dorian crossing over to AMC a few times but I think her scenes were always with David Canary.

Robin Strasser was so good as Rachel on AW and so delicious as Dorian on OLTL. However, her Christina Karras on AMC in the late 1970s was a disappointment.
Christina was rather bland with a milquetoast personality. They eventually gave Christina a back story where there was some kind of childhood abuse going on and it manifested itself in her stealing money from the cash register of the store she worked at, or something along those lines.
YAWN.
Strasser was an expert playing characters who cause trouble and stir the shit up. But AMC didn't write to her skillset.
She did not have the skills to play an victim at least in the longterm. Creating sympathy and empathy for a bland, boring every day character was not in her wheelhouse. Expectations were high for the Christina character thanks to Strasser's track records and we were all disappointed by what we got.
Once they transferred Strasser to OLTL to play Dorian in early 1979, Christina Karras was quickly forgotten and never mentioned again.
I'm sure Christina and Erica shared some scenes, but I don't particularly remember them 45+ years later.

OLTL used to air, in my city, after Dark Shadows. Our ABC affiliate kept moving it around, it sometimes was on at 10am because they started showing Phil Donahue instead. I got hooked the 2nd year it was on, there was a girl - Julie - who tried to off herself because her photographer bf wouldn't marry her and she was living in sin. Her Catholic mother was horrified and her Jewish dad (played by Alan Miller who was terrific) was more tolerant. She ended up marrying Tom Lee Jones, who was the doctor who treated her. Later they married and she was frigid - I had no idea what that meant and had to ask my older sister who wondered what the hell I was watching. It was really great those first few years.

Judith Light's moment resonates because it is PURE soap opera. Like what it was intended to be. And then add in a little sleaze and networks taking a chance and the actor delivering.

by Anonymous | reply 258 | May 26, 2024 4:18 PM |
That "insufferable kid" was a grandson of Victor Lord. I count that Victor had thirteen grandchildren: Brian Kendall, by Tony Lord; Megan, Kevin, Joey, Jessica, and Nataly, by Viki; Danny Wolek, by Meredith, who also had a stillborn child; C.J. and Sarah, by Tina; Starr, Danielle, and Jack, by Todd; and Sam by Victor Jr. Others can correct me if I missed any.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | May 26, 2024 4:26 PM |
Speaking of Meredith.....I only know of her existence by the cast talking about her and a few clips of her on YouTube but they should never have killed her off. That was a big mistake. Slaybaybataliciousstack would have been more interesting with a sisterly rivalry.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | May 26, 2024 4:37 PM |
They sort-of corrected it by turning Tina into Viki's sister. Anyway, Meredith was very passive and boring and, once she was married to Larry, she had no story until her death. I've always thought it was sad that Larry just vanished over the years (also, Danny, Wanda, and Rafe).

Cali as the new Tina was even announced in Soap Opera digest. OLTL went as far as rehearsing a few scenes, for a chemistry test, between Viki and nuTina. Reportedly Slay saw Cali on screen and then nothing went any further with her being the recast as Tina.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | May 27, 2024 5:45 PM |
and if you look at the history of Cali stealing just about every scene she was in from seasoned professionals.......well....
by Anonymous | reply 280 | May 27, 2024 5:47 PM |
I never watched a whole lot of Ryan's Hope; always respected the talent involved but it was mostly inconvenient.
Then along came Cali with old time star "delicious, de-lovely, DeHaven" playing her mother. I had been in grad school then and was badly injured in a taxi accident. Everything went on hold and I laid there all day, remote in hand, flicking through all the soaps. I found myself increasingly drawn to Cali Timmins on Ryan's Hope. Her (usually) quiet charisma felt like no other soap actress I'd ever seen before. She even had her own background music.

Joe Hardy has died - he was EP at various shows.
The Llanview book features some of his comments - I don't think he was universally loved by the OLTL cast.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | July 9, 2024 3:54 PM |
R282- You are thinking of Joseph Stuart! (I have done the same thing) Different men. Joseph Hardy may have produced GH (and maybe Loving?) I may be confusing that as well. But Joseph Stuart is the man who fucked the chick Jacqueline Courtney and was the producer of OLTL in the late 70's-early 80's
by Anonymous | reply 283 | July 9, 2024 3:58 PM |
Joseph Hardy fucked up GH. He hired Greg Beecroft as a Duke recast. The fans disliked him, so he decided to kill off Duke-but by that time, the fans were coming around to him. Olivia Jerome was also killed off during his tenure; and Anna had Casey the Alien living in her garage. He was fired and Gloria Monty was brought back.

R283 OMG you're absolutely right! My apologies.

by Anonymous | reply 286 | July 9, 2024 4:24 PM |
I was only 10- and OLTL was my show- not GH, but I watched GH from 88-91. I recall loving that Anna/Duke storyline with Beecroft. I found it really great. I think that old goat came back after Hardy and felt that GH needed to be rooted in reality and reflect the recession at that time. (Was this Bill Eckardt?) Thats what I recall during Monty- An earthquake and the Eckardts. I was done with GH by 92 and I have never seen it since.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | July 9, 2024 4:40 PM |
R287, yeah, Monty wanted Tony Geary back but he didn't want to play Luke so she added her sister Norma as the head writer and created the working class Eckerts.

by Anonymous | reply 317 | July 21, 2024 3:14 AM |
R317 The rumors have always been that MEK is gay, and when James Scott was on AMC he apparently relentlessly cockteased Michael and led him to believe he was interested in him, and then quite cruelly pulled the rug out from under that notion, apparently somewhat publicly.
That's also apparently why the character James played on AMC (Ethan) was killed off so quickly.

R323- Someone has the summer of 1988 Patrick London storyline- ITS FUCKING AMAZING-- It was far better than I ever remembered. Its like a 3 month film. You need to start in February/March when "Bo" returns to the show - It was expertly done.
And Eterna was a damn good mystery prior to the underground city being revealed.
Eterna started in late Sept/early October 1988 and I was a little boy. I suspect it was very similar to how little kids felt about Dark Shadows.

I've somehow missed this thread entirely until now, but decided to chime in because I can answer the question: yes, there actually *is* a train between Pine Valley & Llanview! As it so happens, my brother recently moved with his family to a town along the Main Line. I knew Agnes Nixon had used it as an inspiration for both Pine Valley & Llanview, but I had no idea it was all THAT specific. As it turns out, there's no Pine Valley but there is a Penn Valley, and Llanview is Llanfair IRL.
I also remember all the references to Center City – and in the REALLY old days, Locust Street being where its hookers used to hang out – but I had no idea that downtown Philly is literally *called* Center City! (Same reason as most of Europe: the term "downtown" didn't even exist yet when Philly began booming.) And yes, it has a Locust Street, albeit strongly gentrified since the '80s (but inner-city Philly is rough AF). Still, the Main Line area looks a whole lot like the homes shown on AMC over the years, though IIRC they used various mansions north of NYC to stand in for Cortlandt Manor, Linden House, and the Chandler estate.
Anyway, it was a nice surprise seeing all these unexpected reminders of my youth following my brother's move. (Our babysitter was the one who got us hooked on AMC & OLTL in the '80s.) And the reason it's called the Main Line, of course, is because that's what the train connecting each city has always been called, dating back to the 19th century when Main Line mansions were the "weekend homes" for the Philadelphia elite. They actually have *three* trains connecting the area! (two SEPTA lines and an Amtrak commuter line)
by Anonymous | reply 325 | July 22, 2024 10:10 PM |
Llanfair is a town much farther West in Cambria county......unless there is a second Llanfair closer to Philly?
by Anonymous | reply 326 | July 22, 2024 10:14 PM |
R326, I'm not sure if it's an incorporated municipality, but it's at least a large neighborhood located in the Main Line area. I noticed it in or near the town of Ardmore.

[quote]Was the LA version of All My Children any good?
It was mostly pretty similar, except they filmed way more scenes outdoors. I assume that's both because modern digital cameras don't require special lighting to work, and because the L.A. area has more areas that can reasonably "pass" as suburban Pennsylvania. (That plus it's considerably easier to film things outdoors there, e.g. no lengthy approval process to close down entire streets & whatnot.)
[quote]Esta’s line deliveries were so awkward. And looking at her Instagram, her face is unrecognizable. Rest in… something.
I remember her to some degree, but in particular that she had a rather unusual look. OTOH like far too many D-list female celebs, she WAY overdid it with the plastic surgery in recent years. That's also an awfully depressing Instagram: only 649 followers? My little brother (who's 16) has more than that!

R325, in the early 1990s I worked in a bank located near Agnes Nixon’s home. In fact, I waited on her in the bank several times.
Often, on my lunch break, I would drive around her neighborhood. Many of the street names were inspiration for names used on her various shows.

R334- No-- There is nothing out there about the cause either, but I suspect that your theory is correct-
Erika briefly spoke about it and you can tell that it has destroyed her-
Basically Erika and Brian were devoted parents. They have taken care of their kids financially well into adulthood kind of letting them both be somewhat protected from real life. So for this to happen, its a shock to the system when you have a daughter that you devoted your life to lose her life so young.

Haha, R357. I meant “Germanic” as in, uhh, humorless and stiff. Very certain of how things need to be done. I was with a German for years and he was from Bavaria so I know what I’m talking about. I thought I read somewhere that Palmer was modelled after a member of the notorious Krupp family which produced more than the coffee maker, if you catch my drift. Of course Lars Bogard turned out to be a former Nazi but I think if Mitchell didn’t work out in the role then it’s possible we’d learn of his horrible secret.

R355 the way Erika tells it, the Prospect Park production was kind of shady.
It started off well. All kinds of promises were made to get the actors back. Then, once they started shooting the shows back to back using an alternate filming sequence (I think 2 weeks on/off for each show), the money just ran out to the point where the payroll office would close early when the checks were supposed to have been paid. A lot of actors were very unhappy about the situation and are still unpaid.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | July 24, 2024 6:59 AM |
Peter Bartlett, who played Nigel in OLTL, told a friend of mine that he receved two identical checks. He phoned his agent who told him not to contact the Prospect Park payroll office. And those checks were each made out to him for over $3000.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | July 24, 2024 1:28 PM |

I think unfortunately the ship has very much sailed on a reboot.
I would happily watch a reboot of any NYC soap but between the deaths of so many of the older actors plus the time that's passed (hard to believe nearly 10-15 years for all of them - minus the brief reboots of course) it would be very challenging.

Do AMC like The Crown. Start it in 1950. A young Mona. A young pheebs. A pre-teen Erica. Kate Martin as a spring chicken. It would be fantastic. OLTL would probably work better than AMC doing that. A young Victoria. We could see how she got so damaged.

R370 Brilliant idea creatively but it would likely cost a fortune.

by Anonymous | reply 372 | July 25, 2024 7:41 PM |
R370, I love AMC, but let's be realistic: "The Crown" wouldn't exist without the Windsors, one of the highest-profile families in the world. A daytime soap cancelled 15 years ago doesn't generate the same kind of love, plus most people under the age of 40 have never even *seen* a daytime soap, let alone watch it regularly.
There's also the small matter of its original cast being nearly all dead or unrecognizable. Obviously La Lucci had a fuckload of work done while AMC was still on, but nowadays she's had *way* more and is barely recognizable.
I remember reading not that long ago that Cady McClain, of all people, achieved a first: she's the only person – and almost definitely the last – to win a Best Actress Daytime Emmy playing different characters on all *three* different networks. (Interesting if only because Lucci famously lost the award 17 or 18 times in a row or whatever.) Dixie & Opal were easily the two best characters on the post-cancellation online spinoff, but it was, well, weird to watch the show while missing so many actors, with Erica easily topping the list. I recall Opal & Palmer's son Petey coming down with a severe case of SORAS during the interregnum when AMC was cancelled: he went in a little kid and came out a hot, 30-playing-18 son driving around Pine Valley in a Porsche. (Meaning literally. That was the opening scene! At least they were back in the Northeast by then.)

The actor who played hot Petey is now on Days of our Lives - he played a serial killer first and is now playing a perpetually shirtless himbo.

Intesting that the two main leads of OLTL and AMC both had issues with their daughters.
Sleestack lost her daughter in a drug overdoes while Lucci and her daughter are estranged and haven't spoken in years.

by Anonymous | reply 382 | July 27, 2024 12:40 AM |
One thing all the great soaps used to have, ten became non-existent or greatly reduced, was a large stable of back burner players with minor stories or plot moving involvement in major stories. Then everybody had some favorites from the back burners. I think OLTL was the best at using minor players. They had Wanda, Vinnie, Anna, Larry, a, Katrina, Becky, Richard, Mimi, Chuck, etc etc etc. None of them ever had a there own major story but were occasionally pushed forward. Larry is the GOAT back burner character.

R390- I believe it was money related. Helmut and Susan finally cut her off financially and then she cut them out of her life. When Helmut died, Liza didn’t acknowledge it. She doesn’t seem very sympathetic to me.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | July 27, 2024 11:36 PM |
Liza did acknowledge her father's passing, sort of.
She didn't make a posting about it on Facebook or Instagram. However, when a fan commented on Helmut's death and offered sympathy, Liza responded that she and her parents had been estranged for years.
That's how must of us learned of the estrangement.
Many of us hoped the death would bring Liza and Susan back together, but apparently it did not.

Did Ellen Holly ever forgive Nixon?
I watched her Television Academy interview, and she is a wonderful speaker. I liked her stories but she did take her character being marginalized very personally and had not gained a healthier perspective over time.
She was undoubtedly on the receiving end of racial abuse on set, but she also seemed to fight nonstop with her co-workers, and said she thought she deserved Lucci's salary!
by Anonymous | reply 401 | July 28, 2024 1:30 PM |
R401 No, she really held a grudge against Agnes.
Like Vicky Rowell, I think some of what Holly said was absolutely true and valid. And some of it was bullshit, or a perception she had in her mind that somehow became what she believed was a memory. There is NO way Erika Slezak ever said "get these two black bitches out of my face."
by Anonymous | reply 402 | July 28, 2024 2:27 PM |
Ellen Holly diminishes Slezak in that interview by continually referring to her as "the third Viki", but the part about Tavern on the Green does not seem to be included.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | July 28, 2024 3:00 PM |
elder Holly seems like a nutcase to me. I loved her as Carla and when she started with her "passing" story on OLTL she put OLTL on the map. Then she went back burner. I sense OLTL trying with her as she never disappeared it's just that nothing seemed to gel with her character. Plus her unhappiness with the show oozed from every pore. That certainly didn't help. It seemed like she hated every second on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | July 28, 2024 3:15 PM |
R402. I'm with you. Probably the majority of what she said was true, the rest though was most likely what she THOUGHT was true or what her mind built up after decades of anger and hurt. I hope though that the story about Lil and her Tercel are 100% accurate.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | July 28, 2024 4:07 PM |

R409. Oh, hush!
by Anonymous | reply 410 | July 28, 2024 4:28 PM |
The story about the car is true, though we don't know if it was a Tercel (that was a joke). We know Rauch had Lil Hayman's things packed from her dressing room and put into her car.
I really think Ellen had it in her mind that she (as Carla) was the star of OLTL, and she probably was in those first few years, but as with any soap, emphasis eventually shifted to another character. Unfortunately, she internalized it as a personal thing or a racist one.
by Anonymous | reply 411 | July 28, 2024 6:49 PM |
Holly was delusional with a deeply unrealistic perception of her value to the show. Simple as that.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | July 28, 2024 9:13 PM |
I watched the original OLTL. Her story was groundbreaking, but it wasn't the only story they told at the beginning. She was a major player, but not the star. Very few daytime actors last more than several years.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | July 28, 2024 9:48 PM |
R413 I agree. I started watching One Life because it either came on right before Dark Shadows or before it, and the big story was Meredith and Larry, Vicki and Joe annoying each other, and Carla and Jim. Ellen was stunning. But the Lords and the Woleks and Joe's sister and brother in law, the Siegels were more dominant in the story. I remember Anna Wolek yelling at Vinnie for washing his dirty hands in the kitchen sink.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | July 28, 2024 11:15 PM |
Ellen Holly was just jealous of the amount of fan mail I received. They ALL were!

by Anonymous | reply 417 | July 29, 2024 4:34 AM |
Holly definitely gives off Vicky Rowell vibes. Her story probably ranks 3rd or 4th in OLTL folklore. Karen's Prostitution, Marty's Gang Rape and Viki's DID probably rank above her "Passing" story while also brilliant. But like Rowell Holly views herself as groundbreaking and a top OLTL star.

R418- I would add the Andrea Evans Tina era of 1985-90 as way up there as well. It is responsible for catapulting the show to the #2 and #3 spot in the ratings. Her storylines generated so much press and water cooler chit chat. She was a phenomenon.

Eterna was awful. OK, some liked it but it was ridiculed more often than not.
by Anonymous | reply 424 | July 29, 2024 8:08 PM |
I lump all of those Rauch era storylines together- Eterna; the Old West; Viki goes to Heaven; Tina goes over the Iguazu Falls; Fraternity Row; Ursula blows up the wedding cake; etc.
They’re less about traditional soap opera storylines and more about creating oddball scifiesque scenes that would get publicity and younger viewers.
Except for Megan turning out to be Viki’s daughter, they didn’t move storyline for the characters forward, and I don’t recall them being referenced on the show until Ron took over and he used them during the 40th anniversary.
by Anonymous | reply 425 | July 29, 2024 8:23 PM |
I feel the same about Paul's time at GL. He did a lot of the same tricks there. He shamelessly copied the two princes story used at OLTL and did it again at GL. He also revisited time travel. Instead of underground cities, there was a clone.
He wouldn't be the first person to basically write a story multiple times, though. Agnes did that. Rachel on AW >> Erica on AMC >> Ava on Loving. And Doug Marland did the "Mother takes the hit for daughter in peril" story a few times.

R427, when did she announce that? Just curious how, specifically, she thinks it can be rebooted for a second time, and also in a way that won't lose a total shitload of money. (Also, she makes about $30 million a year, and I'm guessing could easily fund it, but why do so if it's doomed to fail?)
On top of that: is she planning to reintroduce Hayley & Mateo? If so, how's she gonna do that if they're both hosting "Live" every weekday morning?

R430, thanks – I somehow entirely missed the story during the pandemic. A grand rivalry between the Santos and Kane families? Seems like both a stretch as well as favoritism: obviously Kelly went with the Santoses because her character is married to one, and never mind that they didn't move to Pine Valley till the '90s. Also, the pitch sounds an awful lot like a more mature version of "Riverdale" or "Nancy Drew," so I'm not surprised that ABC passed on it.
by Anonymous | reply 433 | July 29, 2024 11:47 PM |
R420- Tina going over the Iguazu Falls was pretty iconic which lead to her dramatically returning from the dead and interrupting Cord and Kate’s wedding. That shit was epic.

R442 Sometimes you wonder if something you loved a long time ago was really as good as you remember. I was starting to think my nostalgia for Tina and 80's OLTL was an exaggeration. After AE's passing, I rewatched several scenes of Tina, half-expecting to be disappointed -- like re-trying Chef Boyardee as an adult, lol. Not at all. Both Kim and Taylor were absolutely stunning. Lots of girls were imitating Taylor's French braids and Kim had her followers wearing their hair in the full, Neo Farrah Fawcett style. Lauren Holly was pretty but didn't quite connect as strongly. Although she didn't get to their heights, Paige Turco was a worthy successor in AMCs ingenue royalty.

It was with the first actress Stephanie Winters and later Lauren, and the concept was that it was the bad boy with the good girl. Kim Delaney was a Roxborough girl, graduated from Hallahan Catholic HS for girls in 1977, she was a very nice girl, very sweet, extremely beautiful, great hair. Kim should be 65 yrs. old, I just turned 63 yrs. old. Kim Delaney in the 1980's was a sweetheart, one of the nicest real people I ever met back in the day.

by Anonymous | reply 486 | August 4, 2024 3:48 AM |
R486. She was a recast Jackie Templeton (the role Demi Moore created in 1981/1982). It was a weird time for the show during Covid. I think she was recurring in 2020 and 2021. She was decent. Looked good, which was nice to see after her struggles.
by Anonymous | reply 487 | August 4, 2024 3:57 AM |
I had no idea Kim was born in 1959, I thought she was the same age as Jenny - 17 when she started in 1983 - so she was actually 25! I knew Larry Lau was almost 10 years older than Greg.
by Anonymous | reply 488 | August 4, 2024 10:25 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 489 | August 4, 2024 12:36 PM |
R488, it's standard for actors to play much-younger characters if they're supposed to be playing a teenager: they can't hire *actual* teens without having to set up a remote learning program of some sort, so they go for a "28 but looks 18" thing (except no one *truly* looks 18 at 28, but still). The only AMC-specific difference here was Kendall, but that was because the fans balked at a clearly teenage SMG playing a character the fans all know HAD to be 25 or so. I can't recall any other time viewers complained about something like SORAS, but it was more than a bit awkward when they had to "convert" Kendall into an adult. I still remember the cringe moment where Kendall orders an alcoholic drink, and after getting some odd looks says something like, "What? I'm old enough to drink."
But still, casting young is common. Darnell Williams was 26 when he joined AMC as a then 16-year-old Jesse. He's a bit older than Kim being born in 1955, but Michael E. Knight was also born in 1959. (Tad's supposed to be a few years older than them, but still.)

Larry Lau was sexy on AMC when he was thin. He gained weight when he was on Another World and he looked swollen. It didn’t help that they dressed Jamie like a newscaster at a tv station in a small midwestern city.

Lau just hit the wall pretty fast. He was outrageously hot one day then three days later it was over.

[quote]I could never decide if Larry Lau was sexy or not. There were some moments in which I thought he was dreamy and others in which I thought he was kind of dull looking.
There was a scene on Another World where Lau's Jamie fucked the shit out of Anne Heche's Victoria on a kitchen table at the Frame Farm. It was the only time where I found Lau crazy sexy. I'm not sure if it was Anne Heche bringing it out of him or what, but that scene was incredibly good.

by Anonymous | reply 497 | August 4, 2024 5:52 PM |
He came to town as the lawyer ex husband of trouble making Lindsay Rappaport when their hunky son Will knocked up the virginal town good girl sweetheart Jessica Buchanan and had a history with Todd as his "father" Peter Manning's former lawyer. He also had a past with Nora which they rekindled until Lindsay got in their path. He went on to become Todd's regular lawyer constantly getting him out of his messes and romanced Blair for a brief period until he reunited with Nora for a while.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | August 4, 2024 6:00 PM |
R497. He was a creation under the Jill Farren Phelps regime. I linked the character's bio. Basically he was the reason for supercouple Bo and Nora to break up. His arrival though did bring on Lindsey Rappaport...who was one of my favorite characters at that time.

Very likely, the sexy thinness you loved about Larry was due to cocaine use. AMC has Coke Central in the early 1980s.
Larry has hinted over the years the he left AMC, in part, to get off drugs. Also has suggested that when he was ready to return to soaps in fall 1986, he chose AW rather than AMC to stay away from temptation of drugs.

I remember at the time how they gave Kin, then unheard of dollars for daytime, to go to Texas. The show bombed. Then Kin finally returned to GH. One of Carlotta's first jobs for Dorian was to launder piles of money. Of which she must have pocketed quite a bit to afford the best plastic surgeon in Llanview. As she first appeared as an old woman in 1994. Only to look at least 30 years younger by the time the show finished in 2011.

Wil is a comedian and also hosted a talk show and was so funny and charming. Then again, Kin is supposed to be those things as well but he was such a wimp on GH that he didn't show any of it. I wish someone would upload 1981-82 episodes as I was too young back then. I am so sad I missed the Jenny/Greg/Liza triangle. From what I’ve read, they really made her reprehensible and Marcy played it to the hilt. For thise who watched the show back then, did I miss out on an amazing time or what?

Yes, it was an excellent storyline. Very compelling. Must see TV in its day.
Of course, they wrote Marcy as this bitch from hell for the first 12 to 18 months. Gave Liza an unattractive butch haircut and dressed her in unflattering polo shirts or sweaters. Show didn't create any avenues for viewers to like Liza in the least.
They made her a bitch you wanted to hate. And that made you root for Jenny and Greg even more.

[quote]Pity. He was by far the worst of the long line of Jamie Frames. Deadly, deadly dull.
Laurence Lau wasn't Richard Bekins who was the definitive Jamie in my book.
But I thought Larry was more interesting in the role than Stephen Yates, who was on for two years (1983-85) but never had a storyline -- he just sort of collected a paycheck for looking good.

R546, yes, you missed out. Marcy Walker was sort of fascinating to watch when she first appeared as Liza. First of all she didn’t look like anyone else on that soap up until then-she was unique looking, a pretty blonde but very distinctive. To contrast with Jenny (and to make her look asexual) they cut her hair short (which apparently made Walker very upset) and mostly put her in Izod Lacoste-type polo shirts in the warm months and cashmere sweaters in the cold ones. Her original Liza was ice cold and, frankly, a racist. It was clear what she thought of Jesse even though the show tried to make us think it was a class thing rather than a race one (they established she was friends with well-to-do Angie).
I remember when ATWT introduced a Liza rip-off character named Lorna. Barbara Garrick was a good actress but it just didn’t work at all. Lauren on Y&R was introduced a year after Walker started on AMC and also seemed to be a Liza rip-off character (both Luza and Lauren had daddies who owned the local department store) but they let Tracey Bregman play her as a minx so worked.

R578, I loved the first season of Savannah... had so much potential as a night-time soap and yes, Jamie Luner was very good it that show. I didn't see her as Liza... long after I watched AMC.
But I do remember Marcy as the original Liza and how much Jesse Hubbard hated her and her machinations at breaking up Jenny and Greg. I believe/remember, he used to say, "you is a snake Liza Colby!" I loved it. This was back when I was in college, the very early '80s.
by Anonymous | reply 579 | August 6, 2024 9:12 PM |
Didn't she accuse Jesse of rape?
Later, she became a drunk and Jesse got his revenge in a great scene. After yelling loud enough so everyone can hear "you got pregnant and don't even know who the daddy is", Liza said she wasn't pregnant. Jesse says with contempt "what did you do? get rid of it?" Liza says she was never pregnant and Jesse leaves after saying how lucky any kid would be not to have her as a mother.

Liza threatened to tell Greg about Ray Gardner, so Jenny took off for New York. When Jesse went to confront Liza about this, she accused him of rape, so he took off for New York.
A year later, karma bit Liza in the ass when her boyfriend (Jenny’s brother Tad Martin) fucked her mother Marian.
Liza was pure evil.

Walker's 2nd stint as Liza went well at first, especially coming off her disastrous stint at GL.

By the time Marcy came back to GL in 1995, she was a BIG get.
She had Best Actress Emmy, something Lucci did not have at that point.
She had international fame and popularity thanks to Santa Barbara being syndicated all around the globe.
And she could act circles around Lucci, likely the reason Liza and Erica rarely shared any scenes.
Lucci had good reason to feel threatened by Marcy Walker's return.
