Is there a train that goes from Pine Valley to Llanview?

Marco Dane owes me some money and I need to get it from him......

Karen Wolek works the Llanview station when Larry is on nights at the hospital.

by Anonymousreply 1April 8, 2024 9:40 PM

That Donna Beck creature is probably trolloping around the Pine Valley station right now waiting to greet you.

Probably has that harlot Estelle La Tour in tow too.

Likely Billy Clyde Tuggle is somewhere nearby.

A prostitute! At the Gold Post!

by Anonymousreply 3April 9, 2024 12:25 AM

I don't like the tone of this thread atall.

by Anonymousreply 4April 9, 2024 1:11 AM

At one point ALL MY CHILDREN had, I believe, a news program within the show that featured a map showing the distance to Llanview. It wasn’t far. I also think characters from both shows served time in Statesville Prison.

RUTH MARTIN EMPTIES BEDPANS!

by Anonymousreply 6April 9, 2024 1:21 AM

Omg. I haven't thought about Marco Dane in decades! I had a crush on his character back in the day. Llanview either.

by Anonymousreply 7April 9, 2024 1:21 AM

R5 yes, they were intended to be neighboring towns. Agnes Nixon created both shows.

by Anonymousreply 8April 9, 2024 1:22 AM

Llanview has the best post office! They were pros in delivering my fan mail.

Pine Valley was slightly wealthier, despite the more prosaic name. On the Man Line…

The University as located in Pine Valley. Llanview was a dump.

by Anonymousreply 15April 9, 2024 2:26 AM

Depended on who was writing them at any given moment. Sometimes they were both on the Main Line. Sometimes Llanview was close to Harrisburg. There was an establishing shot on OLTL of a bridge in Harrisburg for a number of years.

by Anonymousreply 16April 9, 2024 2:27 AM

How am I supposed to live without you?

by Anonymousreply 17April 9, 2024 2:28 AM

Llanview has a large enough LGBTQ population that it could make a difference in the outcome of the 2009 mayoral election and consequently one of the candidates even pretended to be a lesbian to get votes over her rival.

by Anonymousreply 18April 9, 2024 2:39 AM

Don't forget Pine Valley is also close to NYC.

OLTL was the better soap! More memorable stories and characters. Agree or disagree?

by Anonymousreply 50April 10, 2024 8:40 PM

OLTL was the red-headed step child of ABC for years. ABC never treated it with respect, it was just the filler between AMC and GH. I'm not even sure that Agnes gave a fuck about OLTL after she sold it, but AMC was always her "baby". I always thought that was wrong too. Early AMC was much better than what it would eventually become, but it was never better than early OLTL.

by Anonymousreply 51April 10, 2024 8:48 PM

R51=Erica Slezak

by Anonymousreply 52April 10, 2024 8:55 PM

That's Viki Sleestak to you!

by Anonymousreply 53April 10, 2024 8:58 PM

I was never a fan of Slezak. She went too hammy in most of her stories for my taste. I liked it when Pat Ashley was the OLTL star.

by Anonymousreply 54April 10, 2024 9:10 PM

I liked OLTL more but I can concede that AMC was better. One of OLTL's weakness was seeing how nearly everystory was going to interact with slaystack. She became just a little too much. My favorite was Loving. Which got all the respect and attention a network could give a show but it never took off like the rest. Never was a big fan of GH except for the Diana Taylor murder which I've always considered the best storyline of any soap. In the early days of her playing Heather Robin Mattson was a revelation. The Diana Taylor murder involved nearly the whole cast and lasted over a year. When you found out who did it you gasped. Because they led you to believe, for months, that Heather did it.

by Anonymousreply 55April 10, 2024 9:46 PM

I loved stuffy Viki but she needed a contrast like Todd, Dorian. Or Tina to shine!

by Anonymousreply 56April 10, 2024 11:15 PM

Men in Llanview were hotter

by Anonymousreply 57April 10, 2024 11:16 PM

Not as long as Greg Nelson was in town, R57!

by Anonymousreply 58April 11, 2024 12:08 AM

I was a massive OLTL fan and despised the overrated AMC. (I did think AMC was decent in that 88-89 timeframe) My mom loved it from the late 70's until 1984. AMC was the only soap she watched.

Granted I am 44 and was very young at the time and basically watched with my grandparents.

OLTL's zeniths were probably 1978-82 then 85-90 and 93-95.

I found OLTL to be the most underrated soap of all time quite honestly.

I did watch Y&R somewhat consistently and had brief addictions to GL and GH in the late 80's.

by Anonymousreply 59April 11, 2024 12:32 AM

I watched most of the soaps here and there in the 80s and early 90s, but AMC was *my* show. I watched it from 1982 until the (very) bitter end. I hate that Frons fucked it up. It deserved to be one of the last soaps standing, and could have been easily fixed. The last few months of the original and the ill-fated Hulu reboot felt like the “old” AMC.

At least there are still episodes on YouTube. I often watch classic episodes, especially the storylines with my favorite soap actress ever, Kate Collins.

by Anonymousreply 60April 11, 2024 1:05 AM

Greg Nelson looks a lot like Llanviews Sam Rappaport

by Anonymousreply 61April 11, 2024 1:34 AM

I think Ryan's Hope was ABC's red headed step child. You couldn't deny it was probably the best acted and certainly the best written but it never really was a ratings smash. Even among the NY soaps, it was never really got what it deserved from the network. But all those Emmys RH won annually were more than enough for ABC.

by Anonymousreply 62April 11, 2024 1:47 AM

Why do I feel like only one person is commenting on this thread? It is unhinged.

by Anonymousreply 63April 11, 2024 1:50 AM

There are a few of us, R63.

by Anonymousreply 64April 11, 2024 2:10 AM

Ryan's Hope biggest problem, and maybe only one, was they couldn't hold onto a cast.

by Anonymousreply 65April 11, 2024 3:31 AM

OLTL was fire when Andrea Evans and Fiona Hutchinson drove the story. The Gordon sisters came along and they became too much of a focus. When Andrea left, it was the never the same for me.

by Anonymousreply 66April 11, 2024 10:34 AM

Paul Rauch and his pale, tepid blond fetish.

by Anonymousreply 67April 11, 2024 1:35 PM

R65, Helen Gallagher and Bernard Barrow were there the entire run.

by Anonymousreply 68April 11, 2024 1:49 PM

R68 They and Michael Levin were about the only ones that were.

Two Delias...or was it three? And all the Ryan kids had three or four portrayers.

by Anonymousreply 69April 11, 2024 3:23 PM

Kimberley(Ryan's Hope) was better than Tina.

by Anonymousreply 70April 11, 2024 3:30 PM

I preferred Randall Edwards as Delia.

by Anonymousreply 71April 11, 2024 3:33 PM

R71, that entire Crystal Palace storyline would never have worked with Ilene, great as she was.

by Anonymousreply 72April 11, 2024 3:40 PM

Even Robin Mattson played Delia for a while.

by Anonymousreply 73April 11, 2024 3:41 PM

Roger on Ryan's Hope looked like Dr. Bombay.

by Anonymousreply 74April 11, 2024 3:52 PM

OLTL at its best was the greatest soap of all time. They had some fantastic writers in the 1990s throughout the end of their run. (The exception to that was there were some clunker years when Jill Farren Phelps was at the helm but she ran every soap she touched into the ground)

by Anonymousreply 75April 11, 2024 7:58 PM

I hearts Ivan Kipling

by Anonymousreply 76April 11, 2024 9:07 PM

I remember a poster on various soap boards who went by Ivan Kipling.

by Anonymousreply 77April 11, 2024 10:48 PM

Tina. Gabrielle. Megan. Sarah. Bo. Max. Cord. Asa. Mitch Laurence. The best!

by Anonymousreply 78April 13, 2024 5:13 PM

Christine Jones was the manure smell in Llanview.

by Anonymousreply 79April 13, 2024 5:18 PM

Funny how Ryan's Hope stuck with the ugly Pat.

by Anonymousreply 80April 13, 2024 5:22 PM

Erica had a twin or doppelgänger? I don’t recall.

by Anonymousreply 81April 13, 2024 5:28 PM

They should have never fucked with the faux Silver character. I remember watching it and her and realOpal would bring about all the screaming, off the couch reactions. Sometimes I just wonder about their casting decisions. They should have had a group of fans helping them. AMC's biggest fuck up, and I LOVED Cliff and Nina together, was ending the Cliff and Angie romance. It was such a slow burn story. They just didn't throw them together. It was two grieving friends slowly falling in love.

by Anonymousreply 82April 13, 2024 5:36 PM

R81 Erica had an exact doppelganger in the form of a deranged fan named Jane Campbell in 2011.

It was an AMC attempt at a James E. Reilly-style storyline, but it turned out to be a big stinker of a storyline.

by Anonymousreply 83April 13, 2024 6:04 PM

Thank you r81. No wonder I blocked it out.

by Anonymousreply 84April 13, 2024 7:42 PM

I was a big AMC fam when in collge - 1980-1984. Jenny, Greg, Liza ("you is a snake!") Colby, Jesse, Angie... Carrie Sanders, Tad smoking copious amounts of pot.

Didn't Dr. Joe come close to having an affair with the abused wife, Carrie's stepmother? I think she was Lenore? Carrie married a Wallingford didn't she or someone adjacent to Pheobe?

Oh my gosh and Sybil Thorne's murder, the arrival of Nina's mother (didn't Daisy originally go by the name Jacqueline?). And poor, poor Devon Shepherd - that character bounced from one unhappiness to another (I think the writers hated the character or the actress).

Yikes, I'm going down a rabbit hole... Brooke and Tom, many more whose names I can no longer recall.

by Anonymousreply 85April 13, 2024 8:36 PM

Tom in his prime MMM MMM MMM His brother Sean was even hotter. Sean and Daisy together were hysterical. Oh, and the way Sean used Devon. LOL I loved Sean and Erica's scenes together they were some of the best on the show. It was two schemers who saw right through each other. Daisy was the first Viki on OLTL. Would have loved to see her continued take on Viki. Instead of the hambone slaystack.

by Anonymousreply 86April 13, 2024 8:52 PM

Monique r85.

by Anonymousreply 87April 13, 2024 9:52 PM

Nobody cares about salami town.

by Anonymousreply 89April 13, 2024 10:42 PM

R85, thanks! Of course, Monique. Monique Jonvil, whose mother, Myra (a Mrs. Danvers-type at the start) raised Nina.

Oh man, that storyline... Cliff, Nina, Myra, Palmer (aka Pete Cooney) Cortlandt, Sybil Thorne, etc... that was a soap opera storyline!

by Anonymousreply 90April 13, 2024 11:14 PM

Killing Nurse Whore was a mistake too. She was funny as hell.

by Anonymousreply 92April 14, 2024 1:42 AM

Remember the painting of Nina's mom over the fireplace was originally Nina. When they cast the role, the portrait also changed.

by Anonymousreply 93April 14, 2024 2:00 AM

I think what hooked me on AMC was how they (for many years, anyway) were able to balance the funny, camp characters and storylines with serious, social issue stories that seemed natural and logical to the characters.

Of course, as in any long running show, they had missteps, but in the AMC Golden Age, it just couldn’t be beat. There were many great years, but 1986-87 always stands out to me as classic soap.

by Anonymousreply 94April 14, 2024 2:06 AM

I even liked that 88-89 era and I was a OLTL fan- by far ( I overall hated AMC)

I really enjoyed Brooke and that Laura/Drunk Driving storyline and Cindy/Stuart. And for some reason I remember LOVING Nico and Cecily?

(This is sitting there with my grandparents at 7-8 just wanting to get to OLTL and Tina and Viki and Maria!)

by Anonymousreply 95April 14, 2024 2:10 AM

I watched OLTL occasionally, I liked Dorian, and uh..yeah, Dorian. Hated frumpy Viki and those dumpy Buchanan men. Tina was fun. The Fraternity Row stuff was fun for a while, and of course watched for uber twink Ryan Phillippe’s gay storyline..but AMC did that storyline better with cutie pie Kevin and Kelsey (RIP Ben Jorgensen) and won the Emmy for Best Writing for it.

by Anonymousreply 96April 14, 2024 2:25 AM

Ryan's Hope at least until Delia's kidnapping by a gorilla was really good. It was a neighborhood middle class Soap but the producers had to mess with the plot to generate ratings.

Also Malcolm Groomed as Dr Pat Ryan . Let's play doctor

by Anonymousreply 97April 14, 2024 2:29 AM

Cali Timmins as Maggie was incredible on Ryan's Hope. It was her first acting gig and she stole each and every scene she was in. She was supposed to replace Andrea Evans as Tina but a certain piece of ham nixed it.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 98April 14, 2024 3:34 AM

Cali Timmins should have been a big star. She was great as Paulina on AW, but was replaced by…Judi Evans??

I followed her to AW. She just didn't stay on long enough. I tuned in one day and suddenly Paulina was a fat frau. I left the show.

by Anonymousreply 100April 14, 2024 4:33 AM

Cali would have made a great Tina more so than the other names mentioned. Genie Francis as a recast Sarah could have been interesting but loved Jensen in the role.

by Anonymousreply 101April 14, 2024 1:18 PM

All- refresh my memory about Cali- When was it rumored that she would play Tina on OLTL, and why did she not?

I vaguely remember that this was 2000 or so?

She would have been one of the very few that could do a decent job.

by Anonymousreply 102April 14, 2024 2:03 PM

Sarah Buxton. Cynthia Preston. All names mentioned as a Tina Recast. What about the other Mindy’s? Barbra Crampton or Kimberly Simms? I think Cali was in talks right after AE left and before they found Karen Witter (who turned out to be a great version too!)

by Anonymousreply 103April 14, 2024 3:57 PM

R94- Life at Cortlandt Manor was indeed an amazing storyline followed closely by the Adam/Brooke/Dixie triangle with Tad thrown in. Adam was at his most dastardly when he gaslit Dixie in the hopes of getting his son all to himself. That storyline was a total banger as well. I started watching AMC as a kid in 1986 and was obsessed with it until 1998 or so. When AMC was good it was GOOOOOD.

by Anonymousreply 104April 14, 2024 4:05 PM

Kimberly Simms would have been OUTSTANDING.

by Anonymousreply 105April 14, 2024 4:46 PM

Slaystack didn't want Cali. Vociferously. I wonder why?

by Anonymousreply 111April 14, 2024 8:19 PM

OMG thanks for the clip. The GABY awards with the standard whistling music for filler. Faux Silver dressing like she just made a dash over from the Little Women set. God we used to die when Faux was on.

by Anonymousreply 112April 14, 2024 9:38 PM

Ms. Tiegs it was an honor!

by Anonymousreply 113April 14, 2024 9:54 PM

Mousy Silver coming to town was what got me hooked on AMC. I was around 11 and had never heard of All About Eve , haha. Hated when it turned out she was really conwoman Connie Wilkes! They should have brought that character back later to fuck with Erica and Tad.

by Anonymousreply 114April 14, 2024 10:08 PM

It also sucked that the real Silver was a bore. Everything about her. They killed her off fast. I can't remember a single thing, besides her being murdered, about her.

by Anonymousreply 115April 14, 2024 10:20 PM

Was there ever a "real" Silver? I recall another "Silver" came along a couple years after this one, but I think she was also a fraud...

by Anonymousreply 116April 14, 2024 10:22 PM

More Faux Silver LOL

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 117April 14, 2024 10:26 PM

R77, the poster was named Ivana Kipling, not Ivan Kipling.

The “real “ Silver was first played by a very prety brunette named Rosalind something. She was eventually replaced by Claire Beckman, a decent actress but bland. Neither Rosalind or Claire looked like a former archaeologist, which Silver apparently was.

by Anonymousreply 118April 14, 2024 10:38 PM

Apparently.

by Anonymousreply 119April 14, 2024 10:39 PM

Claire Beckman later played Sabrina on ATWT. I don’t think she was popular in the role, but I really liked her.

by Anonymousreply 120April 14, 2024 10:44 PM

Claire Beckman was fine as Sabrina.

Mary Ellen Stuart was fucking fake and dreadful as Frannie. She was a tremendous letdown after Julianne. So many possibilities that could have happened, but Mary Ellen was about as interesting as a salesgirl at Macys.

(And she HAD been vaguely interesting at GL as a police woman.....not sure what happened but she was boooooorrrrriiiiinnnngggg on ATWT)

by Anonymousreply 121April 14, 2024 10:54 PM

Even when ABC was the #1 daytime network, their soaps always looked somewhat cheap and washed out. Also the ABC soap didn't have good background music. I guess it wasn't until the 90s that ABC caught up with CBS and NBC production values.

by Anonymousreply 122April 14, 2024 10:58 PM

Reading this thread is like entering the living room of every kid I knew through high school with a grandma at home…

by Anonymousreply 123April 14, 2024 11:07 PM

…luckily, all of my grandparents were dead before I was born…

by Anonymousreply 124April 14, 2024 11:08 PM

R122- are you crazy? OLTL had the best background music in daytime from 85-90, along with Y&R.

by Anonymousreply 125April 14, 2024 11:24 PM

I wish realJenny, realBrad, Tim, and realSam had stayed longer. They brought the show back to live when it was just the Craigs and Woleks sitting around playing Mahjong. The producers must have shit the bed when they immediately established a huge fan base, got the show ratings rising, and giving the writers new opportunities . . . . then they leave. Bryn Thayer sucked ass.

by Anonymousreply 126April 15, 2024 12:56 AM

R126- I only have seem Brynn on Youtube, but she is lovely to me. Beautiful, great voice, great actress-

You must have never seen Kathy Glass. Still holds the record for most fan mail. I like Brynn but she just wasn't Jenny. It was a great character but nothing that Jenny was supposed to be. Tim and Jenny were like the first young super couple.

by Anonymousreply 131April 15, 2024 1:32 AM

There was always tension between the West Coast soaps and the East Coast soaps. EC felt they had the acting and the writing and WC felt they had the glamour, looks and production values.

Jameson Parker, another Trumpster along with his entire family.

by Anonymousreply 136April 15, 2024 4:15 AM

I liked Claire Beckman as “real” Silver, but it was GREAT when Natalie killed her and hid the body in the couch!

Claire went on to be a replacement Sabrina on ATWT, half of the dual roles formerly played by Julianne Moore. After Julianne left, Frannie and Sabrina were no longer lookalikes. But I digress..back to the Pennsylvania towns!

by Anonymousreply 147April 16, 2024 10:44 AM

R147 Corinth, of course.

by Anonymousreply 148April 16, 2024 11:10 AM

I always though the line went from Llanview to Pine Valley. A quick stop(exit from the rear cars please) at Corinth, the Grand Central to visit the famed Ryan's Bar. I think you could only get to Port Charles by ferry.

R159 that bar was in Wash Heights…not anywhere near GCT.

The Ryans could take the GWB to north Jersey—which gets nowhere near the Main Line.

I have always been curious about Claudette Montgomery on AMC, since she was before my time. She was Paul Martin’s stepdaughter, Erica’s rival for Nick Davis, and she killed Eddie Dorrance. I have never seen footage of her, but it sounds like she was in the middle of everything for a brief period (1978-80 or so).

And her mother Margo had a facelift on television a decade before that old bag on Y&R.

by Anonymousreply 158April 16, 2024 5:50 PM

R158, what fun, posting Claudette Montgomery. She is before my time, but thanks to the interwebs, I read about her character and then Eddie Dorrance (he was a pice of work too!). From Wiki...

Eddie Dorrance: Manager of singer Kelly Cole who got her addicted to drugs. He raped Brooke English, which resulted in her pregnancy and abortion. He was hated by Lincoln, Myrtle, Phoebe and almost everyone else. He was friends with Langley. He was later murdered by Claudette Flax Montgomery.

Is there an eldergay who knows HOW Claudette murdered Eddie? And, um, how friendly do we think Eddie and Langley really were? h'mmm...

by Anonymousreply 161April 16, 2024 7:39 PM

Margo and Claudette were also before my time, but I’ve always been interested in reading about their storylines. There aren’t even that many photos of them online. An older friend of mine back in the day said the first Claudette was good but the second was terrible and looked about as old as Margo (her mother).

by Anonymousreply 162April 16, 2024 9:11 PM

Did Claudette munch on Margo's pork chop?

Did one or either have very short hair cuts, wear chunky boots, and possibly a Subaru?

If any of the above are true

They may be like the lady who went up in the lady-

by Anonymousreply 163April 16, 2024 9:15 PM

Carol Burnett was a huge fan and would often give updates on the show during the Q&A. Once she related how Margo was trying to adopt a baby and then pass it off as her own in order to keep Paul. The audience had a good laugh about that one.

What are people's thoughts about Kelli Maroney as recast Tina? There are only a few seconds of her playing this part on YouTube. She was in Ryan's Hope and then transitioned into an 80s scream queen for a couple of years.

by Anonymousreply 167April 18, 2024 1:03 AM

I liked her in movies but wasn't sure how she did in soaps, but I have found Kelli Maroney has uploaded hundreds of Ryan's Hope videos onto her YouTube page.

I know I'm in the minority but I liked everyone who played Tina. Cali would have been absolute dream casting but you can't have it all. I forget her name but this was actually my favorite Tina. Even above Andrea. I think Jean Randolph was my favorite OLTL character EVER. She did everything were were screaming, from the couch, for Viki to do for years. But I really liked this Tina. This season is awesome. Slaystack does it with a minimal of ham.

I can just imagine Cali slinking around Landfair. Making plans for her next victim.

by Anonymousreply 171April 18, 2024 1:14 AM

R169- Krista Tesreau SUCKED. Oh my god.

by Anonymousreply 172April 18, 2024 1:22 AM

That was Krista Tesreau playing Tina in that clip. I don’t think she lasted long? She was great as the original Mindy on Guiding Light—I wonder why they never brought her back? She wasn’t great as Tina. I was never a big OLTL watcher, but I did like Karen Witter as Tina when I did watch. Didn’t they even have butch Marcia Clark (also from GL) play Tina for a hot second?

And yes, Cali would have been great as Tina. I wish they’d brought her on AMC as a recast or new character. She had a lot of magnetism and was often underrated, like the divine Robin Christopher as Skye on AMC. She’s one of my top 5 AMC actresses. I hate that ABC “de-Chandlered” and made Skye a Quatermaine.

I love Krista but she was as miscast as Tina as Susan Batten was for Connor at ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 184April 19, 2024 6:13 PM

Susan Batten was and would only be Luna to me. Plus I hated Luna! Never got the Max/Luna super couple joke when he better chemistry with Gabrielle, Blair, Tina, Megan, and even Lee Ann. Max wouldn’t have fallen for that hillbilly. Stupid goddess crap wasn’t what Max was drawn to.

by Anonymousreply 186April 19, 2024 8:14 PM

Krista did come across really cool in that interview.

My god I hated her as Tina. And the writing (for the character) did not help.

I felt that an actress SHOULD have tried to offer some of that ditziness and steely determination that Andrea gave Tina..

No one even tried.

As a gayling at the age of 11 or so I did go through a few very brief GL addictions- and I thought that Kimbely Simms was one of the hottest woman I had ever seen.

I think she could have been AMAZING as Tina.

by Anonymousreply 187April 19, 2024 8:49 PM

I wish the spooky, original Dorian had stayed. There was no humor in her psychosis.

by Anonymousreply 188April 19, 2024 9:12 PM

The OG Dorian was fascinating -- so cunning, so indifferent to the pain of others, so able to present herself as blameless. R188 is right -- it was spooky. But I was more entertained by Robin's Dorian -- she brought every scene she was in to a new level. She created a Dorian that was tormented and needy, and poured all that need into desperate acts. At the same time, she made Dorian funny. She was electric. I don't think a psychotic character (as the original Dorian was) can last over time...she's just too evil.

by Anonymousreply 189April 19, 2024 11:23 PM

Elaine Princi was the worst Dorian by far. Just terrible.

by Anonymousreply 190April 19, 2024 11:40 PM

It felt like they hired a placeholder on purpose.

by Anonymousreply 191April 19, 2024 11:46 PM

Robin Strasser was the only good Dorian Lord who matters.

by Anonymousreply 192April 19, 2024 11:52 PM

I always found it interesting how Phil Carey (NO picnic behind the scenes himself) said that Elaine Princi got a raw deal and defended her when they brought Strasser back.. I respected that despite Princi being horrible in the role.

I have very rarely heard a kind word about Strasser, however Slezak and Depaiva loved her, as did the horrid actress Kristen Alderson.

Depaiva even visits her in Ohio.

So she cannot be THAT bad.

by Anonymousreply 193April 20, 2024 12:00 AM

OG Dorian. In a six month period: Lied on medical charts that killed Larry's fiance, kept her sister locked in the attic, counsled the woman whose husband she was having an affair with; telling her not to give him sex. Helped Kathy Craig kidnap Joe and Viki's baby, withheld Victor's pills, actually waving them in front of his face, teasing him, and watching him stroke out. Wresting control of the Banner from Vikstaklake. Am i forgetting anything?

Just her reflection in the maternity ward window, near the end, was enough to spook you. Something was coming LOL.

by Anonymousreply 201April 21, 2024 3:13 AM

Strasser was apparently a neglected or abused child, and by all accounts is very sensitive. But various costars have said nice, or diplomatic things about her.

I think she was daytime's answer to Shelley Long. Someone who always wanted to do their best and would fight battles over the smallest things.

by Anonymousreply 202April 21, 2024 4:19 AM

I know Strasser had her signature roles on AW and OLTL, but she was also briefly on AMC between those stints. That was before my AMC time, and I have never seen that role discussed much or any clips. It’s odd to me thinking about her and Lucci being on the same show. Did they have scenes together? I remember her Dorian crossing over to AMC a few times but I think her scenes were always with David Canary.

by Anonymousreply 203April 21, 2024 12:40 PM

One of my favorite stories about Robin is day after Lucille Ball died she went over to her ex-husband‘s house who is married to Lucy Arnaz to take care of Robin and Larry’s youngest son(Who was with his father for the week), so Lucy and Larry could handle the aftermath of Lucille death

by Anonymousreply 204April 21, 2024 4:27 PM

You mean she did her basic job as a mother?

by Anonymousreply 205April 21, 2024 4:30 PM

I guess you could see it that way, but I actually see it as a very kind act, her sons were Lucille‘s step grandchildren, and based on everything, I’ve read about Lucille, I can’t seem like she was would have been very close to them

As a wee gayling, James DePaiva was the object of my fantasies. His sex scenes with Fiona were rather intense by 80s standards. Have mercy.

by Anonymousreply 208April 21, 2024 6:56 PM

Back in the 80s when I was teen gayling, I thought Jean LeClerc (Jeremy, AMC) was so HOT, but now when I watch old clips, I don’t know what I was thinking.

Oddly, never thought much about Richard Shoberg (Tom) but now I realize what a hunk he was.

by Anonymousreply 209April 21, 2024 7:06 PM

I can't see Jean LeClerc now without thinking that he and Chris Durham were together, and wondering who was the top.

Say what you want about Strasser but she is still very close to this day with Kassie DePaiva, Gina Tognoni and Kristen Alderson so they obviously created some sort of bond. Heather Tom also has said she loved working with her. DePaiva, Alderson and Tognoni still visit her regularly.

Karen's Belle de Jour and Marty's gang rape are unrivaled as far as soap stories go. Maxie's heart transplant on GH is the only other story on daytime you just knew was different. And they tricked into the mainstream because the attention overcame daytime television.

by Anonymousreply 216April 22, 2024 2:32 AM

When Elaine Princi was laughably playing Bob’s Eurotrash wife on ATWT in the early 80s, Jean LeClerc played her sleazy lover. She ran off to Europe with him and dumped Bob, clearing the way for a Bob/Kim romance.

Robin Strasser was so good as Rachel on AW and so delicious as Dorian on OLTL. However, her Christina Karras on AMC in the late 1970s was a disappointment.

Christina was rather bland with a milquetoast personality. They eventually gave Christina a back story where there was some kind of childhood abuse going on and it manifested itself in her stealing money from the cash register of the store she worked at, or something along those lines.

YAWN.

Strasser was an expert playing characters who cause trouble and stir the shit up. But AMC didn't write to her skillset.

She did not have the skills to play an victim at least in the longterm. Creating sympathy and empathy for a bland, boring every day character was not in her wheelhouse. Expectations were high for the Christina character thanks to Strasser's track records and we were all disappointed by what we got.

Once they transferred Strasser to OLTL to play Dorian in early 1979, Christina Karras was quickly forgotten and never mentioned again.

I'm sure Christina and Erica shared some scenes, but I don't particularly remember them 45+ years later.

by Anonymousreply 230April 22, 2024 5:53 PM

Monique Jonvil, you old whore!

I still find the rumor that Lucci and Strasser were sisters - and that their mom was Phyllis Diller - to be hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 231April 22, 2024 5:56 PM

OLTL used to air, in my city, after Dark Shadows. Our ABC affiliate kept moving it around, it sometimes was on at 10am because they started showing Phil Donahue instead. I got hooked the 2nd year it was on, there was a girl - Julie - who tried to off herself because her photographer bf wouldn't marry her and she was living in sin. Her Catholic mother was horrified and her Jewish dad (played by Alan Miller who was terrific) was more tolerant. She ended up marrying Tom Lee Jones, who was the doctor who treated her. Later they married and she was frigid - I had no idea what that meant and had to ask my older sister who wondered what the hell I was watching. It was really great those first few years.

by Anonymousreply 232April 22, 2024 6:12 PM

I count that Victor had thirteen grandchildren: Brian Kendall, by Tony Lord; Megan, Kevin, Joey, Jessica, and Nataly, by Viki; Danny Wolek, by Meredith, who also had a stillborn child; C.J. and Sarah, by Tina; Starr, Danielle, and Jack, by Todd; and Sam by Victor Jr. Others can correct me if I missed any.

by Anonymousreply 259May 26, 2024 4:26 PM

Speaking of Meredith.....I only know of her existence by the cast talking about her and a few clips of her on YouTube but they should never have killed her off. That was a big mistake. Slaybaybataliciousstack would have been more interesting with a sisterly rivalry.

by Anonymousreply 260May 26, 2024 4:37 PM

They sort-of corrected it by turning Tina into Viki's sister. Anyway, Meredith was very passive and boring and, once she was married to Larry, she had no story until her death. I've always thought it was sad that Larry just vanished over the years (also, Danny, Wanda, and Rafe).

Cali Timmins would have been a fantastic Tina.

by Anonymousreply 275May 27, 2024 6:35 AM

R264, on OLTL, Taina was the first Mrs. Asa Buchanon. She fell off a balcony and died. Iguess she was Clint and Bo's mother.

R267 is correct, she was beautiful when young.

by Anonymousreply 276May 27, 2024 9:46 AM

Wish Tina had married Asa! Loved how they hated each other. Cali would have been a great recast!

by Anonymousreply 277May 27, 2024 2:55 PM

Andrea and Phil had great chemistry.

I will never forget his line when she came back from the dead to destroy Cord and Kate's wedding-

"Like the proverbial bad penny!!"

by Anonymousreply 278May 27, 2024 3:00 PM

Cali as the new Tina was even announced in Soap Opera digest. OLTL went as far as rehearsing a few scenes, for a chemistry test, between Viki and nuTina. Reportedly Slay saw Cali on screen and then nothing went any further with her being the recast as Tina.

by Anonymousreply 279May 27, 2024 5:45 PM

and if you look at the history of Cali stealing just about every scene she was in from seasoned professionals.......well....

by Anonymousreply 280May 27, 2024 5:47 PM

I never watched a whole lot of Ryan's Hope; always respected the talent involved but it was mostly inconvenient.

Then along came Cali with old time star "delicious, de-lovely, DeHaven" playing her mother. I had been in grad school then and was badly injured in a taxi accident. Everything went on hold and I laid there all day, remote in hand, flicking through all the soaps. I found myself increasingly drawn to Cali Timmins on Ryan's Hope. Her (usually) quiet charisma felt like no other soap actress I'd ever seen before. She even had her own background music.

by Anonymousreply 281May 27, 2024 8:24 PM

Joe Hardy has died - he was EP at various shows.

The Llanview book features some of his comments - I don't think he was universally loved by the OLTL cast.

by Anonymousreply 282July 9, 2024 3:54 PM

R282- You are thinking of Joseph Stuart! (I have done the same thing) Different men. Joseph Hardy may have produced GH (and maybe Loving?) I may be confusing that as well. But Joseph Stuart is the man who fucked the chick Jacqueline Courtney and was the producer of OLTL in the late 70's-early 80's

by Anonymousreply 283July 9, 2024 3:58 PM

Joseph Hardy fucked up GH. He hired Greg Beecroft as a Duke recast. The fans disliked him, so he decided to kill off Duke-but by that time, the fans were coming around to him. Olivia Jerome was also killed off during his tenure; and Anna had Casey the Alien living in her garage. He was fired and Gloria Monty was brought back.

by Anonymousreply 284July 9, 2024 4:05 PM

R283 OMG you're absolutely right! My apologies.

by Anonymousreply 285July 9, 2024 4:19 PM

Greg Beecroft was so hot....a shame he got stuck as a Duke recast.

by Anonymousreply 286July 9, 2024 4:24 PM

I was only 10- and OLTL was my show- not GH, but I watched GH from 88-91. I recall loving that Anna/Duke storyline with Beecroft. I found it really great. I think that old goat came back after Hardy and felt that GH needed to be rooted in reality and reflect the recession at that time. (Was this Bill Eckardt?) Thats what I recall during Monty- An earthquake and the Eckardts. I was done with GH by 92 and I have never seen it since.

by Anonymousreply 287July 9, 2024 4:40 PM

R287, yeah, Monty wanted Tony Geary back but he didn't want to play Luke so she added her sister Norma as the head writer and created the working class Eckerts.

Do you remember the "Asian Blair" one of Asa many wives!!

Then Blair became American looking white girl!!

by Anonymousreply 289July 10, 2024 1:51 AM

The funniest part of that last little speech about soaps from Viki when ABC cancelled OLTL was the bit about how people "change" and then they did a close up on Blair.....clearly a wink to that recast.

by Anonymousreply 290July 10, 2024 2:08 AM

Was the LA version of All My Children any good? I can't remember anything about it except it looked like The Bold and the Beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 291July 10, 2024 2:58 AM

R291, AMC stopped being good once Cameron Matheson swallowed the show whole. Not even James Scott could save it....

by Anonymousreply 292July 10, 2024 3:23 AM

Joseph Hardy also was the EP of Ryan’s Hope for a few years. I think he’s the one who brought on those hunks David Sederholm and Grant Show as brothers who I desperately wanted to double team me.

by Anonymousreply 293July 10, 2024 3:58 AM

MEK we see you fantasizing about swallowing James Scott whole....

by Anonymousreply 294July 10, 2024 3:59 AM

R290 that may have had more to do with Blair as a character changing too. She was a bad girl temptress "villianess" to a tortured heroine.

by Anonymousreply 295July 10, 2024 4:01 AM

R295 You could absolutely be right, but most of the articles/blog posts I saw around that time seemed to interpret it as the Asian Blair vs Southern Blair change.

by Anonymousreply 311July 21, 2024 1:11 AM

TerBlanche was very strange on The Locher Room a few years ago-or was it on that Michael guy’s show?

by Anonymousreply 313July 21, 2024 1:45 AM

Maggie's brother -- was he called Linc? He was drop dead gorgeous. Of course, so was Grant Show. I have a memory burned into mind of a scene with David Sederholm and Grant Show. One was in white boxer shorts and the other had only a white towel around his waist. That scene should be put on youtube!

by Anonymousreply 314July 21, 2024 2:13 AM

Maggie’s brother Ben Shelby was played by James Wleck, who later played Linc on As the World Turns. He couldn’t act but he had a great rack.

by Anonymousreply 315July 21, 2024 2:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 316July 21, 2024 3:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 317July 21, 2024 3:14 AM

R317 The rumors have always been that MEK is gay, and when James Scott was on AMC he apparently relentlessly cockteased Michael and led him to believe he was interested in him, and then quite cruelly pulled the rug out from under that notion, apparently somewhat publicly.

That's also apparently why the character James played on AMC (Ethan) was killed off so quickly.

I started watching 1989 OLTL recently — the Eterna stuff is bonkers, but also fun.

by Anonymousreply 323July 22, 2024 9:33 PM

R323- Someone has the summer of 1988 Patrick London storyline- ITS FUCKING AMAZING-- It was far better than I ever remembered. Its like a 3 month film. You need to start in February/March when "Bo" returns to the show - It was expertly done.

And Eterna was a damn good mystery prior to the underground city being revealed.

Eterna started in late Sept/early October 1988 and I was a little boy. I suspect it was very similar to how little kids felt about Dark Shadows.

by Anonymousreply 324July 22, 2024 9:44 PM

I've somehow missed this thread entirely until now, but decided to chime in because I can answer the question: yes, there actually *is* a train between Pine Valley & Llanview! As it so happens, my brother recently moved with his family to a town along the Main Line. I knew Agnes Nixon had used it as an inspiration for both Pine Valley & Llanview, but I had no idea it was all THAT specific. As it turns out, there's no Pine Valley but there is a Penn Valley, and Llanview is Llanfair IRL.

I also remember all the references to Center City – and in the REALLY old days, Locust Street being where its hookers used to hang out – but I had no idea that downtown Philly is literally *called* Center City! (Same reason as most of Europe: the term "downtown" didn't even exist yet when Philly began booming.) And yes, it has a Locust Street, albeit strongly gentrified since the '80s (but inner-city Philly is rough AF). Still, the Main Line area looks a whole lot like the homes shown on AMC over the years, though IIRC they used various mansions north of NYC to stand in for Cortlandt Manor, Linden House, and the Chandler estate.

Anyway, it was a nice surprise seeing all these unexpected reminders of my youth following my brother's move. (Our babysitter was the one who got us hooked on AMC & OLTL in the '80s.) And the reason it's called the Main Line, of course, is because that's what the train connecting each city has always been called, dating back to the 19th century when Main Line mansions were the "weekend homes" for the Philadelphia elite. They actually have *three* trains connecting the area! (two SEPTA lines and an Amtrak commuter line)

by Anonymousreply 325July 22, 2024 10:10 PM

Llanfair is a town much farther West in Cambria county......unless there is a second Llanfair closer to Philly?

by Anonymousreply 326July 22, 2024 10:14 PM

R326, I'm not sure if it's an incorporated municipality, but it's at least a large neighborhood located in the Main Line area. I noticed it in or near the town of Ardmore.

by Anonymousreply 327July 22, 2024 10:18 PM

[quote]Was the LA version of All My Children any good?

It was mostly pretty similar, except they filmed way more scenes outdoors. I assume that's both because modern digital cameras don't require special lighting to work, and because the L.A. area has more areas that can reasonably "pass" as suburban Pennsylvania. (That plus it's considerably easier to film things outdoors there, e.g. no lengthy approval process to close down entire streets & whatnot.)

[quote]Esta’s line deliveries were so awkward. And looking at her Instagram, her face is unrecognizable. Rest in… something.

I remember her to some degree, but in particular that she had a rather unusual look. OTOH like far too many D-list female celebs, she WAY overdid it with the plastic surgery in recent years. That's also an awfully depressing Instagram: only 649 followers? My little brother (who's 16) has more than that!

by Anonymousreply 328July 22, 2024 10:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 334July 23, 2024 5:46 AM

R325, in the early 1990s I worked in a bank located near Agnes Nixon’s home. In fact, I waited on her in the bank several times.

Often, on my lunch break, I would drive around her neighborhood. Many of the street names were inspiration for names used on her various shows.

by Anonymousreply 335July 23, 2024 12:18 PM

R334- No-- There is nothing out there about the cause either, but I suspect that your theory is correct-

Erika briefly spoke about it and you can tell that it has destroyed her-

Basically Erika and Brian were devoted parents. They have taken care of their kids financially well into adulthood kind of letting them both be somewhat protected from real life. So for this to happen, its a shock to the system when you have a daughter that you devoted your life to lose her life so young.

by Anonymousreply 336July 23, 2024 1:13 PM

To R333, I LOVED OLTL, Eterna and Gabrielle Medina during Eterna. Eterna was completely crazy bit it worked for OLTL.

Gabrielle screaming that she had to go back for the Eterna Gold, Max stopping her (I hated Max, but wanted to get fucked by him and fuck his hot tight ass).

The story line made zero sense but it was great. The marriage of Palmer and former prostitute Donna Beck Tyler. It was so off the wall but was some of the creepiest shit with the way Palmer treated her Poor Donna.

by Anonymousreply 340July 23, 2024 3:51 PM

To R340, I believe Palmer wanted a child from Donna (a boy) Wasn't Donna in love with Chuck Tyler at the time.

I LOVED the character of Palmer Cortlandt, so EVIL& controlling, fun to watch.

by Anonymousreply 341July 23, 2024 4:48 PM

I thought it was ridiculous for Palmer (who always seemed so Germanic and upscale) to be revealed as having been a hillbilly from West Virginia named Pete Cooney.

by Anonymousreply 342July 23, 2024 5:50 PM

James Mitchell did an episode of Charlie’s Angels the year before he joined AMC.

The Angels were undercover as (of course) high priced call girls, and he played Kris’ creepy John.

He’s like a prototype version of Palmer Cortlandt.

by Anonymousreply 343July 23, 2024 5:54 PM

To R342, I disagree with you on that point. I loved the fact that Palmer & Adam was "hillbilly white trash"& re-invented themselves into respectable??? Multi-millionaires. I knew 3 guys from the trader's floor on Wall Street who came from those hills in W, Virginia, Kentucky& Tennessee. All 3 told me they ran from the hills. My FB Kirk told me it was a "degenerate Waltons mountain".

If we got a reboot would you want OLTL or AMC or a combination of both?

by Anonymousreply 352July 23, 2024 10:28 PM

R352. Just OLTL would be sufficient. AMC died when it was announced "The role of Natalie Dillon is now played by Melody Anderson."

by Anonymousreply 353July 23, 2024 10:31 PM

Same for me - just OLTL! Maybe Ron could pen the reboot. Would it be a continuation or a reimagining?

by Anonymousreply 354July 23, 2024 10:51 PM

Both were OK in their reboots. If they were smart they'd bring both shows back at 2 1/2 hours a week on ABC - one show gets M and W, one gets T and TH, and both air 30 minute episodes on Friday.

by Anonymousreply 355July 23, 2024 10:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 357July 23, 2024 11:35 PM

I always loved my "P.C."

by Anonymousreply 358July 23, 2024 11:46 PM

Haha, R357. I meant “Germanic” as in, uhh, humorless and stiff. Very certain of how things need to be done. I was with a German for years and he was from Bavaria so I know what I’m talking about. I thought I read somewhere that Palmer was modelled after a member of the notorious Krupp family which produced more than the coffee maker, if you catch my drift. Of course Lars Bogard turned out to be a former Nazi but I think if Mitchell didn’t work out in the role then it’s possible we’d learn of his horrible secret.

by Anonymousreply 359July 24, 2024 2:03 AM

R355 the way Erika tells it, the Prospect Park production was kind of shady.

It started off well. All kinds of promises were made to get the actors back. Then, once they started shooting the shows back to back using an alternate filming sequence (I think 2 weeks on/off for each show), the money just ran out to the point where the payroll office would close early when the checks were supposed to have been paid. A lot of actors were very unhappy about the situation and are still unpaid.

by Anonymousreply 360July 24, 2024 6:59 AM

Peter Bartlett, who played Nigel in OLTL, told a friend of mine that he receved two identical checks. He phoned his agent who told him not to contact the Prospect Park payroll office. And those checks were each made out to him for over $3000.

by Anonymousreply 361July 24, 2024 1:28 PM

Yes, at the end Prospect Park owed (and I think, still owes) Slee 200K.

They declared bankruptcy for that lille piece of Prospect Park but the rest still exists and the same assholes still run it.

by Anonymousreply 362July 24, 2024 1:45 PM

I want OLTL back but maybe the actors are too old and the show could work if they kept the characters and recast?

by Anonymousreply 363July 25, 2024 1:41 AM

I miss OLTL badly. It was filled with a bunch of people that I had come to be fond of.

by Anonymousreply 364July 25, 2024 2:27 AM

I think unfortunately the ship has very much sailed on a reboot.

I would happily watch a reboot of any NYC soap but between the deaths of so many of the older actors plus the time that's passed (hard to believe nearly 10-15 years for all of them - minus the brief reboots of course) it would be very challenging.

by Anonymousreply 365July 25, 2024 3:49 AM

Who the hell wants to see 80 year old Erica and Brooke going at it? Not me.

by Anonymousreply 366July 25, 2024 10:49 AM

ack

by Anonymousreply 367July 25, 2024 1:14 PM

Does a reboot have to start where left off? Watching for the characters or the actors? Imagine Eva Langoria as Erica Kane let Susan cameo as Mona. Go back and tell new stories with the characters.

by Anonymousreply 368July 25, 2024 1:21 PM

R368 — I guess that would be a reimagining, could be good.

by Anonymousreply 369July 25, 2024 5:08 PM

Do AMC like The Crown. Start it in 1950. A young Mona. A young pheebs. A pre-teen Erica. Kate Martin as a spring chicken. It would be fantastic. OLTL would probably work better than AMC doing that. A young Victoria. We could see how she got so damaged.

by Anonymousreply 370July 25, 2024 7:29 PM

R370 Brilliant idea creatively but it would likely cost a fortune.

by Anonymousreply 371July 25, 2024 7:39 PM

Yeah. It would. I'd love to see a young Dorian. A young Charles and Mona. Erica kissing the doll. Meredith's boy friend popping Niki Smith's cherry. Myrtle Lum turning tricks at the fair grounds.

by Anonymousreply 372July 25, 2024 7:41 PM

R370, I love AMC, but let's be realistic: "The Crown" wouldn't exist without the Windsors, one of the highest-profile families in the world. A daytime soap cancelled 15 years ago doesn't generate the same kind of love, plus most people under the age of 40 have never even *seen* a daytime soap, let alone watch it regularly.

There's also the small matter of its original cast being nearly all dead or unrecognizable. Obviously La Lucci had a fuckload of work done while AMC was still on, but nowadays she's had *way* more and is barely recognizable.

I remember reading not that long ago that Cady McClain, of all people, achieved a first: she's the only person – and almost definitely the last – to win a Best Actress Daytime Emmy playing different characters on all *three* different networks. (Interesting if only because Lucci famously lost the award 17 or 18 times in a row or whatever.) Dixie & Opal were easily the two best characters on the post-cancellation online spinoff, but it was, well, weird to watch the show while missing so many actors, with Erica easily topping the list. I recall Opal & Palmer's son Petey coming down with a severe case of SORAS during the interregnum when AMC was cancelled: he went in a little kid and came out a hot, 30-playing-18 son driving around Pine Valley in a Porsche. (Meaning literally. That was the opening scene! At least they were back in the Northeast by then.)

by Anonymousreply 373July 25, 2024 9:17 PM

The actor who played hot Petey is now on Days of our Lives - he played a serial killer first and is now playing a perpetually shirtless himbo.

by Anonymousreply 379July 26, 2024 9:49 PM

It's been surprising that scenes like Petey getting head haven't appeared on DOOL when it moved to Peacock

by Anonymousreply 380July 26, 2024 10:50 PM

Intesting that the two main leads of OLTL and AMC both had issues with their daughters.

Sleestack lost her daughter in a drug overdoes while Lucci and her daughter are estranged and haven't spoken in years.

by Anonymousreply 381July 26, 2024 11:00 PM

But at least both have a son they’re close to.

by Anonymousreply 382July 27, 2024 12:40 AM

One thing all the great soaps used to have, ten became non-existent or greatly reduced, was a large stable of back burner players with minor stories or plot moving involvement in major stories. Then everybody had some favorites from the back burners. I think OLTL was the best at using minor players. They had Wanda, Vinnie, Anna, Larry, a, Katrina, Becky, Richard, Mimi, Chuck, etc etc etc. None of them ever had a there own major story but were occasionally pushed forward. Larry is the GOAT back burner character.

by Anonymousreply 383July 27, 2024 12:44 AM

[quote] But at least both have a son they’re close to.

Slee's son sleeps in the basement so she's very close to him

He's fat. Slaymaladystackems doesn't go for fat.

by Anonymousreply 385July 27, 2024 12:48 AM

Does Miss Victoria Sleestack regret not having any grandchildren. Miss Lucci has several. Sleestack’s kids never married.

by Anonymousreply 386July 27, 2024 1:53 AM

Slee had her kids spayed and neutered when they were three. She was heard to say "no grand babies for me I already look like a frumpy 70".

by Anonymousreply 387July 27, 2024 1:54 AM

R376 Dee Dee Halls is barely of legal age, she has plenty of time to grow as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 388July 27, 2024 1:57 AM

R381. The star of "Passions," Miss Liza Huber, had a falling out with mummy?! I had no idea.

by Anonymousreply 389July 27, 2024 7:32 AM

[quote]Sleestack lost her daughter in a drug overdoes while Lucci and her daughter are estranged and haven't spoken in years.

I did not know that! Any idea what happened with Lucci and her daughter?

by Anonymousreply 390July 27, 2024 11:20 PM

R390- I believe it was money related. Helmut and Susan finally cut her off financially and then she cut them out of her life. When Helmut died, Liza didn’t acknowledge it. She doesn’t seem very sympathetic to me.

by Anonymousreply 391July 27, 2024 11:36 PM

Liza did acknowledge her father's passing, sort of.

She didn't make a posting about it on Facebook or Instagram. However, when a fan commented on Helmut's death and offered sympathy, Liza responded that she and her parents had been estranged for years.

That's how must of us learned of the estrangement.

Many of us hoped the death would bring Liza and Susan back together, but apparently it did not.

by Anonymousreply 392July 27, 2024 11:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 395July 28, 2024 1:24 AM

R395. SLEE!!!

by Anonymousreply 396July 28, 2024 1:28 AM

Robin would be outside the ring pulling dirty tricks to help Slee win. Grabbing Nancy's ankle when she goes for a suplex, then throwing slee a chair to whack her with.

Nancy: "OF COURSE I'M CRYING. SHE HIT ME WITH A CHAIR!"

by Anonymousreply 397July 28, 2024 1:39 AM

I did love Greenlee calling Bianca "Lesbianca." That was genius.

by Anonymousreply 398July 28, 2024 4:14 AM

That ole dyke McTavish coined the lesbianca phrase.

by Anonymousreply 400July 28, 2024 10:55 AM

Did Ellen Holly ever forgive Nixon?

I watched her Television Academy interview, and she is a wonderful speaker. I liked her stories but she did take her character being marginalized very personally and had not gained a healthier perspective over time.

She was undoubtedly on the receiving end of racial abuse on set, but she also seemed to fight nonstop with her co-workers, and said she thought she deserved Lucci's salary!

by Anonymousreply 401July 28, 2024 1:30 PM

R401 No, she really held a grudge against Agnes.

Like Vicky Rowell, I think some of what Holly said was absolutely true and valid. And some of it was bullshit, or a perception she had in her mind that somehow became what she believed was a memory. There is NO way Erika Slezak ever said "get these two black bitches out of my face."

by Anonymousreply 402July 28, 2024 2:27 PM

Ellen Holly diminishes Slezak in that interview by continually referring to her as "the third Viki", but the part about Tavern on the Green does not seem to be included.

by Anonymousreply 403July 28, 2024 3:00 PM

elder Holly seems like a nutcase to me. I loved her as Carla and when she started with her "passing" story on OLTL she put OLTL on the map. Then she went back burner. I sense OLTL trying with her as she never disappeared it's just that nothing seemed to gel with her character. Plus her unhappiness with the show oozed from every pore. That certainly didn't help. It seemed like she hated every second on the show.

by Anonymousreply 404July 28, 2024 3:15 PM

I WAS ITALIAN !

by Anonymousreply 405July 28, 2024 3:54 PM

R402. I'm with you. Probably the majority of what she said was true, the rest though was most likely what she THOUGHT was true or what her mind built up after decades of anger and hurt. I hope though that the story about Lil and her Tercel are 100% accurate.

by Anonymousreply 406July 28, 2024 4:07 PM

Lil should have never traded in her Volkswagon Rabbit.

by Anonymousreply 407July 28, 2024 4:09 PM

R408. I told that wonderful Paul Rauch to get that black BITCH out of my parking garage!

by Anonymousreply 408July 28, 2024 4:16 PM

Doris quite because they wouldn't give her pay parity with Slee. LOL that worked out.

by Anonymousreply 409July 28, 2024 4:18 PM

R409. Oh, hush!

by Anonymousreply 410July 28, 2024 4:28 PM

The story about the car is true, though we don't know if it was a Tercel (that was a joke). We know Rauch had Lil Hayman's things packed from her dressing room and put into her car.

I really think Ellen had it in her mind that she (as Carla) was the star of OLTL, and she probably was in those first few years, but as with any soap, emphasis eventually shifted to another character. Unfortunately, she internalized it as a personal thing or a racist one.

by Anonymousreply 411July 28, 2024 6:49 PM

Holly was delusional with a deeply unrealistic perception of her value to the show. Simple as that.

by Anonymousreply 412July 28, 2024 9:13 PM

I watched the original OLTL. Her story was groundbreaking, but it wasn't the only story they told at the beginning. She was a major player, but not the star. Very few daytime actors last more than several years.

by Anonymousreply 413July 28, 2024 9:48 PM

R413 I agree. I started watching One Life because it either came on right before Dark Shadows or before it, and the big story was Meredith and Larry, Vicki and Joe annoying each other, and Carla and Jim. Ellen was stunning. But the Lords and the Woleks and Joe's sister and brother in law, the Siegels were more dominant in the story. I remember Anna Wolek yelling at Vinnie for washing his dirty hands in the kitchen sink.

by Anonymousreply 414July 28, 2024 11:15 PM

Ellen Holly was just jealous of the amount of fan mail I received. They ALL were!

by Anonymousreply 415July 29, 2024 12:17 AM

Ellen was cray cray. I was happy to hear of her passing. Let’s party at Tavern on the Green. She won’t be in my face!

by Anonymousreply 416July 29, 2024 12:48 AM

What color was the Tercel?

by Anonymousreply 417July 29, 2024 4:34 AM

Holly definitely gives off Vicky Rowell vibes. Her story probably ranks 3rd or 4th in OLTL folklore. Karen's Prostitution, Marty's Gang Rape and Viki's DID probably rank above her "Passing" story while also brilliant. But like Rowell Holly views herself as groundbreaking and a top OLTL star.

by Anonymousreply 418July 29, 2024 4:57 AM

R418- I would add the Andrea Evans Tina era of 1985-90 as way up there as well. It is responsible for catapulting the show to the #2 and #3 spot in the ratings. Her storylines generated so much press and water cooler chit chat. She was a phenomenon.

by Anonymousreply 419July 29, 2024 2:59 PM

Andrea Evans was always entertaining as Tina but were any of her storylines iconic or impactful? No, they weren’t.

by Anonymousreply 420July 29, 2024 5:16 PM

Eterna

by Anonymousreply 421July 29, 2024 6:22 PM

Victoria Sleestack WAS OLTL!!!

by Anonymousreply 422July 29, 2024 7:35 PM

I didn't like Tina atall.

by Anonymousreply 423July 29, 2024 7:36 PM

Eterna was awful. OK, some liked it but it was ridiculed more often than not.

by Anonymousreply 424July 29, 2024 8:08 PM

I lump all of those Rauch era storylines together- Eterna; the Old West; Viki goes to Heaven; Tina goes over the Iguazu Falls; Fraternity Row; Ursula blows up the wedding cake; etc.

They’re less about traditional soap opera storylines and more about creating oddball scifiesque scenes that would get publicity and younger viewers.

Except for Megan turning out to be Viki’s daughter, they didn’t move storyline for the characters forward, and I don’t recall them being referenced on the show until Ron took over and he used them during the 40th anniversary.

by Anonymousreply 425July 29, 2024 8:23 PM

I feel the same about Paul's time at GL. He did a lot of the same tricks there. He shamelessly copied the two princes story used at OLTL and did it again at GL. He also revisited time travel. Instead of underground cities, there was a clone.

He wouldn't be the first person to basically write a story multiple times, though. Agnes did that. Rachel on AW >> Erica on AMC >> Ava on Loving. And Doug Marland did the "Mother takes the hit for daughter in peril" story a few times.

by Anonymousreply 426July 29, 2024 8:39 PM

I wonder what happened to Kelly Ripa’s planned reboot of AMC.

by Anonymousreply 427July 29, 2024 8:41 PM

Doubt it ever went beyond the discussion phase.

by Anonymousreply 428July 29, 2024 8:50 PM

R427, when did she announce that? Just curious how, specifically, she thinks it can be rebooted for a second time, and also in a way that won't lose a total shitload of money. (Also, she makes about $30 million a year, and I'm guessing could easily fund it, but why do so if it's doomed to fail?)

On top of that: is she planning to reintroduce Hayley & Mateo? If so, how's she gonna do that if they're both hosting "Live" every weekday morning?

by Anonymousreply 429July 29, 2024 10:09 PM

Old news now.

by Anonymousreply 431July 29, 2024 11:13 PM

Too bad Loving wasn't more popular. It was a little slow moving sometimes but it was always interesting and devoid of such silliness.

by Anonymousreply 432July 29, 2024 11:18 PM

R430, thanks – I somehow entirely missed the story during the pandemic. A grand rivalry between the Santos and Kane families? Seems like both a stretch as well as favoritism: obviously Kelly went with the Santoses because her character is married to one, and never mind that they didn't move to Pine Valley till the '90s. Also, the pitch sounds an awful lot like a more mature version of "Riverdale" or "Nancy Drew," so I'm not surprised that ABC passed on it.

by Anonymousreply 433July 29, 2024 11:47 PM

R420- Tina going over the Iguazu Falls was pretty iconic which lead to her dramatically returning from the dead and interrupting Cord and Kate’s wedding. That shit was epic.

by Anonymousreply 434July 30, 2024 1:57 AM

No, R434, not iconic or epic just plain campy fun.

by Anonymousreply 435July 30, 2024 2:16 AM

The best part about Eterna was that we learned little Miss Viki was a teenage ho, sleeping with Roger Gordon in the fields of Llantano Mountain.

by Anonymousreply 436July 30, 2024 2:32 AM

The Argentina story was more of an adventure story it didn't have the heft of Karen, Marty and Viki's social issue stories.

by Anonymousreply 437July 30, 2024 3:53 AM

[quote] Also, the pitch sounds an awful lot like a more mature version of "Riverdale" or "Nancy Drew,"

This was exactly what they were trying for, something with a bit of a darker vibe.

by Anonymousreply 438July 30, 2024 4:12 AM

They wanted Lucy to be nuTina but Gary talked her out of it.

by Anonymousreply 439July 30, 2024 1:21 PM

Tina was iconic. That era of OLTL was the best! Loved Gabrielle, Max, Cord, Bo, Sarah, and Megan!!!

by Anonymousreply 440July 30, 2024 3:39 PM

R439. Imagine her wacky faces and hijinxs as she went over the Falls.

by Anonymousreply 441July 30, 2024 6:36 PM

Ooh, this delicious episode sums up everything I love about AE's Tina! That slap is at 25:00 minutes. She played the bad girl with a few soft edges so well. Everything about the show was so big at this point. Ellen Holly also appears in this episode, shortly before she left. There are comments in the video that Nancy Frangione played Tina briefly during this era too.

R442 Sometimes you wonder if something you loved a long time ago was really as good as you remember. I was starting to think my nostalgia for Tina and 80's OLTL was an exaggeration. After AE's passing, I rewatched several scenes of Tina, half-expecting to be disappointed -- like re-trying Chef Boyardee as an adult, lol. Not at all. She and Cord were just as dynamic as I remembered, if not better. Tina and Cord had all of us by the balls back then and for good reason.

by Anonymousreply 461August 3, 2024 10:27 PM

And by "us" I mean me, my family, my mother's coworkers. I can't tell you how many kids named Cordero were created in that period. I still see men in their 30's and 40's named Cord.

Anyone remember the horrendous Kennicott family? The worst family in AMC history. Susan Blanchard played Mary who landed Erica's hunky husband. No-one could figure out how that happened. And buck toothed Betsy who seemed to signal the end of that family.

by Anonymousreply 468August 4, 2024 12:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 477August 4, 2024 12:20 AM

Both Kim and Taylor were absolutely stunning. Lots of girls were imitating Taylor's French braids and Kim had her followers wearing their hair in the full, Neo Farrah Fawcett style. Lauren Holly was pretty but didn't quite connect as strongly. Although she didn't get to their heights, Paige Turco was a worthy successor in AMCs ingenue royalty.

It was with the first actress Stephanie Winters and later Lauren, and the concept was that it was the bad boy with the good girl. He was a dark haired actor and I thought it was an interesting match but they never moved him above being a bit player. The producers saw the possibilities and paired Julie with Nico.

Kim Delaney was a Roxborough girl, graduated from Hallahan Catholic HS for girls in 1977, she was a very nice girl, very sweet, extremely beautiful, great hair. Kim should be 65 yrs. old, I just turned 63 yrs. old. Kim Delaney in the 1980's was a sweetheart, one of the nicest real people I ever met back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 483August 4, 2024 1:41 AM

R483. Philly, did you watch her on GH? What did you think?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 485August 4, 2024 1:56 AM

I only ever saw Kim Delaney on AMC; I never saw her on GH. I never knew Kim was on GH.

Who did she play?

by Anonymousreply 486August 4, 2024 3:48 AM

R486. She was a recast Jackie Templeton (the role Demi Moore created in 1981/1982). It was a weird time for the show during Covid. I think she was recurring in 2020 and 2021. She was decent. Looked good, which was nice to see after her struggles.

by Anonymousreply 487August 4, 2024 3:57 AM

I had no idea Kim was born in 1959, I thought she was the same age as Jenny - 17 when she started in 1983 - so she was actually 25! I knew Larry Lau was almost 10 years older than Greg.

by Anonymousreply 488August 4, 2024 10:25 AM

I could never decide if Larry Lau was sexy or not. There were some moments in which I thought he was dreamy and others in which I thought he was kind of dull looking.

by Anonymousreply 489August 4, 2024 12:36 PM

R488, it's standard for actors to play much-younger characters if they're supposed to be playing a teenager: they can't hire *actual* teens without having to set up a remote learning program of some sort, so they go for a "28 but looks 18" thing (except no one *truly* looks 18 at 28, but still). The only AMC-specific difference here was Kendall, but that was because the fans balked at a clearly teenage SMG playing a character the fans all know HAD to be 25 or so. I can't recall any other time viewers complained about something like SORAS, but it was more than a bit awkward when they had to "convert" Kendall into an adult. I still remember the cringe moment where Kendall orders an alcoholic drink, and after getting some odd looks says something like, "What? I'm old enough to drink."

But still, casting young is common. Darnell Williams was 26 when he joined AMC as a then 16-year-old Jesse. He's a bit older than Kim being born in 1955, but Michael E. Knight was also born in 1959. (Tad's supposed to be a few years older than them, but still.)

by Anonymousreply 490August 4, 2024 3:30 PM

Larry Lau was sexy on AMC when he was thin. He gained weight when he was on Another World and he looked swollen. It didn’t help that they dressed Jamie like a newscaster at a tv station in a small midwestern city.

by Anonymousreply 491August 4, 2024 4:30 PM

Lau just hit the wall pretty fast. He was outrageously hot one day then three days later it was over.

by Anonymousreply 492August 4, 2024 4:32 PM

[quote]I could never decide if Larry Lau was sexy or not. There were some moments in which I thought he was dreamy and others in which I thought he was kind of dull looking.

There was a scene on Another World where Lau's Jamie fucked the shit out of Anne Heche's Victoria on a kitchen table at the Frame Farm. It was the only time where I found Lau crazy sexy. I'm not sure if it was Anne Heche bringing it out of him or what, but that scene was incredibly good.

by Anonymousreply 493August 4, 2024 4:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 494August 4, 2024 5:19 PM

He came to town as the lawyer ex husband of trouble making Lindsay Rappaport when their hunky son Will knocked up the virginal town good girl sweetheart Jessica Buchanan and had a history with Todd as his "father" Peter Manning's former lawyer. He also had a past with Nora which they rekindled until Lindsay got in their path. He went on to become Todd's regular lawyer constantly getting him out of his messes and romanced Blair for a brief period until he reunited with Nora for a while.

by Anonymousreply 498August 4, 2024 6:00 PM

R497. He was a creation under the Jill Farren Phelps regime. I linked the character's bio. Basically he was the reason for supercouple Bo and Nora to break up. His arrival though did bring on Lindsey Rappaport...who was one of my favorite characters at that time.

Was he a big bore on the show? I'm just curious as I'm formerly a Lau obsessed fan.

by Anonymousreply 500August 4, 2024 6:03 PM

Kale Brown played him the longest and was quite good. Lau was a recast who did in the character with boring femininity.

by Anonymousreply 501August 4, 2024 6:04 PM

Everyone knows Lau is a big homo right? Same with Kin Shriner.

by Anonymousreply 502August 4, 2024 6:38 PM

To R494, Wiki of course is never correct, especially when it comes to age.

by Anonymousreply 503August 4, 2024 7:30 PM

I loved that era of OLTL with wickedly awesome Lindsay as Nora's rival for Bo's affection, her friendship with misunderstood bad guy RJ Gannon, RJ's good guy brother Hank, who shared a daughter, Rachel, with Nora. Cristian, Antonio and Carlotta Vega, Evangeline and Layla Williamson. So many great characters. Miss that show.

by Anonymousreply 504August 4, 2024 7:34 PM

R503. You are right...and 100% sexy

by Anonymousreply 505August 4, 2024 7:35 PM

RJ was a great character

by Anonymousreply 506August 4, 2024 8:24 PM

[quote]Larry Lau was sexy on AMC when he was thin. He gained weight when he was on Another World and he looked swollen. I

Very likely, the sexy thinness you loved about Larry was due to cocaine use. AMC has Coke Central in the early 1980s.

Larry has hinted over the years the he left AMC, in part, to get off drugs. Also has suggested that when he was ready to return to soaps in fall 1986, he chose AW rather than AMC to stay away from temptation of drugs.

by Anonymousreply 507August 4, 2024 10:26 PM

When he was young Lau seemed like the ultimate bottom.

him and MEK. Did either of them sample Darnell's pinga?

by Anonymousreply 509August 4, 2024 10:57 PM

Lau's ass was probably a lot cleaner. I want to know who Kin Shriner got a piece of. Hopefully Steve Bond. They would have had beautiful ass babies.

by Anonymousreply 513August 4, 2024 11:39 PM

Darnell is gay right?

by Anonymousreply 514August 4, 2024 11:39 PM

Yes r514

by Anonymousreply 515August 4, 2024 11:43 PM

They began the storyline with Jenny and Jesse to obviously have an interracial teen romance. They dropped it and brought in the boring Greg. The irony was that when Jenny and Jesse ran away to NY, it was a really exciting storyline.

by Anonymousreply 516August 4, 2024 11:47 PM

Kin was not only beautiful but was sexy as hell.

by Anonymousreply 519August 5, 2024 12:19 AM

KIn forgot how to act

by Anonymousreply 520August 5, 2024 12:25 AM

Kin always looks like a lecherous suburban dad who knocks up the teenaged babysitter.

by Anonymousreply 521August 5, 2024 12:32 AM

His belly looked huge onscreen the last time I saw him on. But that was a couple of years ago.

by Anonymousreply 522August 5, 2024 12:43 AM

R522. He's still carrying low.

by Anonymousreply 523August 5, 2024 12:54 AM

R504 Lindsay was so great — and the Angel Square era in general. I can’t recall who was writing at that w exact time but OLTL had a few phenomenal writers in the 1990s/2000s

by Anonymousreply 524August 5, 2024 1:32 AM

Carlotta and her dust rag must have been chained to that staircase at LaBoulaie. Dorian abused her horribly while she was working there.

by Anonymousreply 525August 5, 2024 1:45 AM

It was always the chat amongst the common folk that Dorian was the Elizabeth Báthory of Llanview.

by Anonymousreply 526August 5, 2024 1:48 AM

Viki, quite indignantly, stated that LaBoulaie was built in the 1950s.

Todd said one of the benefits of living there was pissing in Dorian Lord's pool.

I'm one of the minority who loved Gary Tomlin's OLTL.

by Anonymousreply 527August 5, 2024 1:53 AM

R525. Dorian forced Carlotta to have her family raise Adriana! Not only was Carlotta chained under the Dorian portrait, she was trafficking babies!

by Anonymousreply 528August 5, 2024 2:01 AM

R527. Didn't Dorian buy LaBoulaie from Marty Saybrooke? It was her Aunt Kiki's and she was staying there while going to Llanview U?

by Anonymousreply 529August 5, 2024 2:02 AM

Dorian made a sassy and sultry entrance whenever she returned to town.

R530. Loved when she showed up in a wedding gown to marry Mitch Laurence in 2002. That particular storyline was hideous, but she made her presence known!

by Anonymousreply 531August 5, 2024 2:07 AM

Robin Strasser is the only soap godess with whom I have ever communicated. By email. For a few months around 2015. Lovely batshit crazy old broad. Adorable but volatile.

We even challenged each other to communicate in French. Her French needs work but she's pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 532August 5, 2024 2:45 AM

I remember at the time how they gave Kin, then unheard of dollars for daytime, to go to Texas. The show bombed. Then Kin finally returned to GH. I was hoping for a reuniting with Laura but it never happened. Am I the only one that hated Luke/Anthony? I did love the interacting between Scotty and Heather though.

by Anonymousreply 535August 5, 2024 9:56 AM

One of Carlotta's first jobs for Dorian was to launder piles of money. Of which she must have pocketed quite a bit to afford the best plastic surgeon in Llanview. As she first appeared as an old woman in 1994. Only to look at least 30 years younger by the time the show finished in 2011.

He did a commercial for Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends hotline and showed more personality than he ever did on any show.

There’s a Marcy Walker Appreciation Day on an AMC fan account on Twitter. They’re posting memorable scenes through the years. I wish someone would upload 1981-82 episodes as I was too young back then. I am so sad I missed the Jenny/Greg/Liza triangle. From what I’ve read, they really made her reprehensible and Marcy played it to the hilt. For thise who watched the show back then, did I miss out on an amazing time or what?

by Anonymousreply 546August 5, 2024 11:57 PM

Could you link us, R546?

Man, I wish we still had Soapnet or "A Daaaaytime to Remeeeember" with Reva. Thank God for youtube.

Pity. He was by far the worst of the long line of Jamie Frames. Deadly, deadly dull.

by Anonymousreply 548August 6, 2024 12:02 AM

[quote]From what I’ve read, they really made her reprehensible and Marcy played it to the hilt. For thise who watched the show back then, did I miss out on an amazing time or what?

Yes, it was an excellent storyline. Very compelling. Must see TV in its day.

Of course, they wrote Marcy as this bitch from hell for the first 12 to 18 months. Gave Liza an unattractive butch haircut and dressed her in unflattering polo shirts or sweaters. Show didn't create any avenues for viewers to like Liza in the least.

They made her a bitch you wanted to hate. And that made you root for Jenny and Greg even more.

by Anonymousreply 549August 6, 2024 12:18 AM

And here all the men surrounding Jenny during her three years on the show were gay men in real life -- Larry Lau, Michael E. Knight, Darnell Williams and even Brent Barrett who played Tony Barclay.

by Anonymousreply 550August 6, 2024 12:21 AM

[quote]Pity. He was by far the worst of the long line of Jamie Frames. Deadly, deadly dull.

Laurence Lau wasn't Richard Bekins who was the definitive Jamie in my book.

But I thought Larry was more interesting in the role than Stephen Yates, who was on for two years (1983-85) but never had a storyline -- he just sort of collected a paycheck for looking good.

by Anonymousreply 551August 6, 2024 12:24 AM

R546, yes, you missed out. Marcy Walker was sort of fascinating to watch when she first appeared as Liza. First of all she didn’t look like anyone else on that soap up until then-she was unique looking, a pretty blonde but very distinctive. To contrast with Jenny (and to make her look asexual) they cut her hair short (which apparently made Walker very upset) and mostly put her in Izod Lacoste-type polo shirts in the warm months and cashmere sweaters in the cold ones. Her original Liza was ice cold and, frankly, a racist. It was clear what she thought of Jesse even though the show tried to make us think it was a class thing rather than a race one (they established she was friends with well-to-do Angie).

I remember when ATWT introduced a Liza rip-off character named Lorna. Barbara Garrick was a good actress but it just didn’t work at all. Lauren on Y&R was introduced a year after Walker started on AMC and also seemed to be a Liza rip-off character (both Luza and Lauren had daddies who owned the local department store) but they let Tracey Bregman play her as a minx so worked.

by Anonymousreply 552August 6, 2024 12:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 563August 6, 2024 1:42 AM

R560, the one who first replaced Marcy Walker was named Alice Haining and she was rumored to be the girlfriend of the exec oroducer Jacqueline Babbin. She didn’t last very long. She was quite good later on as the incest survivor Angel Lange on ATWT. The final Liza was that red headed bitch who I enjoyed on the nighttime soap Savannah but did not enjoy as Liza. She was very bad casting. I thought Mary Beth Evans would have been good, though.

by Anonymousreply 564August 6, 2024 1:55 AM

R536 Carlotta de-aged 45 years over the course of the show. If the show continued, can you imagine how hot and sexy Carlotta would be today?

by Anonymousreply 565August 6, 2024 1:57 AM

Liza was one of the most complex, fully developed characters on daytime. To recast her was an insult to the viewers.

by Anonymousreply 566August 6, 2024 1:57 AM

R558 A thousand pardons, Nancy. You're absolutely correct.

by Anonymousreply 567August 6, 2024 2:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 568August 6, 2024 2:16 AM

R461- You nailed it. I was wondering about my love for OLTL the summer of 1988- i was not even 10, so I figured it was a faulty memory. YT has that entire summer up and it was 10X better than I remembered. That show kicked ass.

by Anonymousreply 569August 6, 2024 2:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 570August 6, 2024 3:02 AM

Patrick Mulcahey did an interview years ago where he was asked about joining the writing staff of Santa Barbara when it premiered. He met Marcy Walker in New York as she was leaving All My Children to join Santa Barbara.

They were standing outside talking on a sidewalk when a cab driver drove by and yelled “YOU’RE A BITCH LIZA!”

by Anonymousreply 571August 6, 2024 3:16 AM

Jackie Babbin was such a dyke. La Looch wasn’t a fan.

by Anonymousreply 572August 6, 2024 4:43 AM

Amanda Bearse lived with Sandra Bernhard while she was on AMC. Sandra would have been a 'hoot' as Opal's sister - or imagine her as Jenny.

by Anonymousreply 573August 6, 2024 7:40 AM

R573- Sandra has discussed this time period on her radio show but has never publicly said her then live in girlfriend was Amanda Bearse. She’s described this live-in girlfriend as a sadistic, horrible person.

by Anonymousreply 574August 6, 2024 9:57 AM

Amanda said that Sandra’s snatch smelled bad but she was desperate to get going in the business so she ate her out daily.

by Anonymousreply 575August 6, 2024 10:41 AM

R571 That's hilarious! I miss the days when soaps were part of the zeitgeist and elicited such passionate reactions. That's one of the reasons why I love Tootsie; it captured how universal soap fandom was back then.

by Anonymousreply 576August 6, 2024 11:48 AM

I wonder how Marcy reacted. Lucci used to love the attention.

by Anonymousreply 577August 6, 2024 12:44 PM

[quote]The final Liza was that red headed bitch who I enjoyed on the nighttime soap Savannah but did not enjoy as Liza.

You mean Jamie Luner? I know she was on "Melrose Place," but I'm not familiar with a show called "Savannah." Definitely a very different take on Liza, but still.

by Anonymousreply 578August 6, 2024 4:31 PM

R578, I loved the first season of Savannah... had so much potential as a night-time soap and yes, Jamie Luner was very good it that show. I didn't see her as Liza... long after I watched AMC.

But I do remember Marcy as the original Liza and how much Jesse Hubbard hated her and her machinations at breaking up Jenny and Greg. I believe/remember, he used to say, "you is a snake Liza Colby!" I loved it. This was back when I was in college, the very early '80s.

by Anonymousreply 579August 6, 2024 9:12 PM

Didn't she accuse Jesse of rape?

Later, she became a drunk and Jesse got his revenge in a great scene. After yelling loud enough so everyone can hear "you got pregnant and don't even know who the daddy is", Liza said she wasn't pregnant. Jesse says with contempt "what did you do? get rid of it?" Liza says she was never pregnant and Jesse leaves after saying how lucky any kid would be not to have her as a mother.

by Anonymousreply 580August 6, 2024 9:14 PM

Liza threatened to tell Greg about Ray Gardner, so Jenny took off for New York. When Jesse went to confront Liza about this, she accused him of rape, so he took off for New York.

A year later, karma bit Liza in the ass when her boyfriend (Jenny’s brother Tad Martin) fucked her mother Marian.

Liza was pure evil.

by Anonymousreply 581August 6, 2024 9:29 PM

Luner was pretty good BUT she was not Liza... she could have been a cousin or unknown sister if there needed to be a connect to Liza

by Anonymousreply 582August 6, 2024 10:28 PM

R582. They tried the sister bit with Mia Saunders...

by Anonymousreply 583August 6, 2024 11:05 PM

Walker's 2nd stint as Liza went well at first, especially coming off her disastrous stint at GL.

But Lucci became threatened and started to push against Walker and her front burner storylines. Lucci did the same thing she did to SMG....and Kate Collins....and Fake Silver.....

by Anonymousreply 584August 6, 2024 11:39 PM

By the time Marcy came back to GL in 1995, she was a BIG get.

She had Best Actress Emmy, something Lucci did not have at that point.

She had international fame and popularity thanks to Santa Barbara being syndicated all around the globe.

And she could act circles around Lucci, likely the reason Liza and Erica rarely shared any scenes.

Lucci had good reason to feel threatened by Marcy Walker's return.

by Anonymousreply 585August 7, 2024 12:30 AM

Lindsey was one of the best iconic OLTL characters especially in the last decade. A great complicated villainess (like a tragic Heroine) similar to a Gabrielle. And unpopular to most fans but Nora vs. Lindsey was the best rivalry! I was sad when they sent her off even though she was the bad ass that finally killed Spencer!

by Anonymousreply 591August 7, 2024 1:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 596August 7, 2024 1:21 AM

I loved Lindsay on OLTL. To me Hickland drifted in the soaps until then. So many similar soap actors who floated from one role to another but had obvious appeal and then hit a real payoff role.

Zimmer as Reva comes to mind in that sense but obviously Zimmer is the more dynamic.

by Anonymousreply 597August 7, 2024 1:26 AM

You should have watched Santa Barbara live in its heyday. You would not be calling Santa Barbara "only so so" if you had.

The Cruz and Eden chemistry was out of this world. I've never seen a soap couple with more chemistry than Cruz and Eden.

Their chemistry, along with incredible writing and acting, is what put Santa Barbara on the map.
