I brush, floss, waterpik and gargle, twice da day but I can't seem to stop the tartar from forming on my lower teeth. I broke down and purchased one of those dental picks and that does the trick, but why does it form in the first place?
Do any of you have an issue with lower teeth tartar?

Try LivFresh Toothpaste. It’s very good at preventing tartar buildup

Just stop eating tartar sauce, silly!

OMG, if Lena Horne has tartar then this is a much bigger problem than I realized.

Nacreous layer of permacum.

I assumed she had veneers or dentures.

OP, do you sleep with your mouth open?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 7, 2024 4:23 PM |
Miss r4, when Lena went public, that’s when I sat up and paid attention!

Not that I'm aware of.

My husband got some electric scraper off of Amazon and it works really well
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 7, 2024 4:39 PM |
The question is not why the tartar forms on those teeth. Tartar forms on all teeth. It’s why you gave trouble removing it. I’m going to go out on a limb and say “hard to reach in there?”

[quote]but why does it form in the first place?
Because you touch yourself at night, pervert.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 7, 2024 5:32 PM |
It’s the result of billions of little creatures partying in your mouth.
Not kidding.

My dentist says everyone has a problem there because our salivary glands are there under the tongue and spit has lots of minerals in it.

Are you a fat spayed cocker-doodle, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 7, 2024 6:11 PM |
That's good to know R14. Thank you for that information.
Knowing this and that Lena Horne had tartar issues, makes me feel much better.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 7, 2024 6:21 PM |
Yes I get the same and the last time the dentist removed it for me, I asked him how I could stop it forming, as I'm meticulous at brushing my teeth. In short he said it's almost impossible no matter how well you brush. It seems removing it once it's there is the only option.

I don't. Many years ago I started adding baking soda to my toothbrush. I keep a watertight container of baking soda in my shower (I bathe, brush my teeth, and shave in the shower) and before I brush I dip the brush into the baking soda a fill the bristles with it, then I squeeze the toothpaste on top of that. I'm almost 71 years old and have beautiful teeth. When I go in for my bi-annual checkup my dentist and his hygienist both tell me I have the best looking teeth for a man my age they've ever seen.

I also think it's just plain gravity. That's were everything settles: on the bottom set of teeth.
OP, do you drink coffee with cream and sugar? That would tend to collect on your lower front teeth.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 7, 2024 8:21 PM |
If you've got tartar then clearly you're not brushing your teeth enough.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 7, 2024 9:20 PM |
I am not a coffee drinker, but I do drink Coke Zero R20.
I brush, floss, waterpik, and rinse twice a day, R21. Haven't had a cavity is years.

The gaps between your teeth at the base where your gums have receded collect everything.
Generic whitening strips weaken the plaque and it pops away from my teeth with the help of a scraper.

Get a spin brush. It’s helps your tartar build up and also massages your gums so they look healthier.

R22 I'd been considering getting one of those waterpiks but I heard they weren't that great. Do you find they work?
I use an electric toothbrush twice a day and I floss, yet I still get some tartar buildup on my lower teeth. Like I said above, I asked my dentist at my last check up how I could stop it building up and he essentially said it's very hard to do so. It's not a case of poor brushing. Though I did wonder if he was just saying that because it's a reason for me to have regular check ups as he removes it for me.

I don't have any issues. I have it removed semiannualy but it's barely noticeable. I suppose it's a genetic thing and has to do with the composition of saliva. Is a dentist visit for removing tartar free in your country?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 8, 2024 8:37 AM |
Vitamins D3 and Vitamin K2.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 8, 2024 8:52 AM |
A water pik is not going to remove plaque. It'll help keep you from developing plaque if you use it right after eating anything. It only removes undissolved food from between the teeth. Once you get plaque it can only be removed by a metal scraper.

Yes so I get cleanings 2-3 times a year to keep gum disease at bay as I go into my 60s. I want to keep my chompers for life.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 8, 2024 10:30 AM |
R28 Thanks, I thought that'd be the case.
I'm meticulous about brushing my teeth, given you only get one (adult) set!

R18's teeth are 71 but look 51.
I think your dentist is hitting on you. Present hole next time you get out of the chair!

Add some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to the water pik solution.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 8, 2024 11:41 AM |
I use Listerine in my water pik, but I think I will try that baking soda/hydrogen peroxide thing.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 8, 2024 1:25 PM |
I heard alcohol free Listerine was better than the standard version. I find it burns my mouth if I use the standard version.
Also, you're not meant to use mouthwash straight after brushing your teeth because then you're getting rid of the good the toothpaste does. Especially if you use something like Sensodyne for sensitive teeth.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 8, 2024 2:28 PM |
Yep, I see my dentist every three months for cleaning rather than six because it's so bad. They clocked it as a medical issue so insurance pays for it. I love the grift.

From the Waterpik website:
Do not use mouthwashes or additives that contain iodine, peroxide, baking soda, or water-insoluble concentrated oils (such as Tea Tree Oil). Use of these items can reduce the product performance and will shorten the life of the unit. Do not use a salt/saline solution in any handheld cordless unit.

Ignore the manufacturers instructions and just give it a good rinse when finished.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 8, 2024 8:27 PM |
Better Living Through Chemistry -- one tablespoon of Drano® in 3 ounces of warm water swished around the teeth for 30 seconds will clear the tartar problem right up. Other issues may arise though.

I have no issue at all with you having tartar on your lower teeth.

You're thinking of tartar. Plaque can be removed at home. Once it hardens into tartar though, you have to get it professionally removed.
