“Boys (Summertime Love)” (1987) by Italian pop-star Sabrina
I wish this song was a hit in the states back then! My young gay ass would have been blasting this in the late 80s!!! So much fun! I discovered it this week while watching “Baila Como Puedas”. Jaime Astrain danced to this song this week. What a bop! I had to look it up and read the history of Sabrina, who is also on the show.
Sabrina was a teenage Italian primetime soap actress and model who starred in the primetime soap “ Premiatissima” in 1984 at 16 years old. She was then recruited by a music producer at 18 and released her debut single in 1986, which became a Top 20 hit in her native country of Italy but not much of a hit outside of there. The success in Italy led them to sign her to do an album and her debut album came out a year later, in 1987. She was made to sing in English so that her music had potential to breakout throughout all of Europe and even globally and not be limited to Italy and Spanish speaking countries.
The lead single for her debut album (not counting the song that came out a year prior) “Boys (Summertime Love)” would catapult her to fame throughout Europe, with the song being a Top 5 hit in over 10 countries and a #1 hit in Switzerland and France and #3 in the UK. Her debut album would go on to be a huge smash throughout Europe and the video to Boys would solidify her as a sex symbol and make her super popular with teens, especially teenage boys, who plastered her posters all over their walls and her provocative music video a huge hit.
While “Boys” was her biggest hit overall, her song “My Chico” off her sophomore album would be her biggest hit in her home country of Italy.
She continued singing her English pop songs for a few years until 1991, before clashing with her management and label over her wanting more independence and to drop the sexy glamour image she was doing since a teenager. These clashes led to her barely promoting her third album and it flopping along with its singles, and her finally being able to get out of her contract with the label. She took a few years off before releasing a few independent singles in 1994 and 1995 and went back into acting in Italian soaps as well as hosting a couple of shows. She then started her own record label and reinvented herself as a more mature artist and making Italian-sung music, like she wanted to do but her label wouldn’t allow, and now was no longer just Sabrina, but Sabrina Salerno. She has since done numerous hosting jobs, films and tv shows as well as some music, including a re-recording of her smash Boys.

The video to “Boys” was allegedly imported to MTV in the states but never took off. They had to edit the video for the states, and did that weird half black and white half color screen shit you used to see in the 80s, and zoomed in shots more to not show her tits. The original shows a lot of her tits practically falling out of her bikini top. They couldn’t show that here in the states.

I was born the year it came out, but I clearly remember it from my childhood and occasionally still hum it to myself to this day. You're telling me this song wasn't a thing in the States? How tragic!

Video looks like it cost $1.98 (US) to make.

Sabrina sure struggled to keep her top up in that public swimming pool. She’d have had more success with her U.S. gay audience if there were any actual BOYS in her song called….Boys.

It’s called “Boys” but no hot men. Just her. Fail.

R2 why would I think a song that came out in 1987 was gonna happen here? You think we are still in 1987? What an uneducated comment.

R5 because the gay scene was so open and big in the 1980s. You clearly weren’t around then and it shows.

Sabrina last year at 56 years old.
She was Italy's answer to the UK's Samantha Fox.

R18 she had great tits! Still does, although I’m sure she’s had work done to maintain them.
But if you think the Boys video is boobs central, you should see her video for My Chico, which is her biggest hit in her native land of Italy. Boys is her biggest hit as a whole.

I'm with R6. For a video called "Boys" there aren't any fucking boys in it. The thing SHOULD have been half full of shirtless men at the pool. What a wasted opportunity.

Who cares? It was the 80s. Lots of music videos made no sense. Yet alone an Italian music video.

Lots of 80s videos had hot men in them too, there's literally NO EXCUSE for this one not to have several... which makes this video a total fail.

This video is on "Now 80s" TV as we speak. OP, pick me some Powerball numbers, please.

Nothing in R27 sounds "retarded" or "pathetic", R29, but by using the R-word like that and making that sort of completely baseless accusation, you certainly come off sounding like both... pure projection on your part.

Sabrina and Samantha Fox had an intense rivalry in the mid-80s that almost led to a physical bustup at one point. Sam said in the British press that Sabrina could not sing. And Sabrina described Sam as the 'English midget'.
The story goes both were playing the Festivalbar in Ibiza in '87, where Sam had been the big star the previous year. And in front of the press, Sam lept into a swimming pool fully dressed expecting the photographers to follow her in a tailspin, only to find Sabrina was at the poolside lavishing up all the attention leaving Sam all alone, wet and unnoticed.
The two put their rivalry aside after the same event. They broke the ice and discovered they had too much in common to let the media turn them against each other.

R32 late 80s. 1988 isn’t the mid 80s.

R32 Sam only had one single in 1986. Her being the big star of 1986 makes no sense. Her big breakout single came out in 1987.

Here's another busty bimbo from the late 80's. Croatian-Dutch Tatjana IS a 'chica Cubana'

R34 Samantha Fox released her first album and had her first international hit single Touch Me in 1986.
Sabrina released her album Sabrina and had her first major international hit with Boys in 1987.
That's why Samantha Fox was a sensation at Festivlebar in 1986, not 1987.

No, because Sabrina had a something resembling a personality.

Also, Sabrina is not a global superstar. She was huge throughout Europe for a little while, and she had a little success in Australia, but it never came to the states. Dua Is global, and I don’t know anyone who views her as just a sex symbol.
