Israeli strike kills 7 workers from Jose Andres' World Central Kitchen aid organization

Gaza Strip (AP) — An apparent Israeli airstrike killed six international aid workers with the World Central Kitchen and their Palestinian driver, the charity said Tuesday, in a potentially major setback to efforts to deliver aid by sea to Gaza, where Israel’s offensive against Hamas has pushed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to the brink of starvation.

The food charity, founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, said it was immediately suspending operations in the region.

The source of fire late Monday could not be independently confirmed. The Israeli military expressed “sincere sorrow” over the deaths while stopping short of accepting responsibility.

Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the top military spokesman, said that officials are reviewing the incident at the highest levels. He says an independent investigation will be launched that “will help us reduce the risk of such an event from occurring again.”

Footage showed the bodies, several wearing protective gear with the charity’s logo, at a hospital in the central Gaza town of Deir al-Balah. Those killed include three British nationals, an Australian, a Polish national and an American-Canadian dual citizen, according to hospital records.

The charity said the team was traveling in a three-car convoy that included two armored vehicles.

“Despite coordinating movements with the (Israeli army), the convoy was hit as it was leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, where the team had unloaded more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza on the maritime route.”

Erin Gore, the CEO of the charity, said "this is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable.”

Three aid ships from the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus arrived earlier Monday carrying some 400 tons of food and supplies organized by the charity and the United Arab Emirates, the group’s second shipment after a pilot run last month. The Israeli military was involved in coordinating both deliveries.

The U.S., which has provided key military and diplomatic support for Israel's offensive, has touted the sea route as a new way to deliver desperately needed aid to northern Gaza and plans to build its own floating dock, with construction expected to take several weeks.

The U.N. has said much of the population is on the brink of starvation, largely cut off from the rest of the territory by Israeli forces. Israel has barred UNRWA, the main U.N. agency in Gaza, from making deliveries to the north, and other aid groups say sending truck convoys north has been too dangerous because of the military’s failure to ensure safe passage.

The UNRWA said in its latest report that 173 of its workers have been killed in Gaza. The figure does not include workers for other aid organizations.

The bodies of the aid workers have been taken to a hospital in the southern city of Rafah on the Egyptian border, according to an Associated Press reporter at the hospital. The foreigners’ bodies will be evacuated out of Gaza and the Palestinian driver’s body will be handed to his family in Rafah for burial.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Zomi Frankcom, 44, of Melbourne, was among those killed and said his government has requested an explanation from Israel.

“This is someone who was volunteering overseas to provide aid through this charity for people who are suffering tremendous deprivation in Gaza. And this is just completely unacceptable,” Albanese told reporters.

“We want full accountability for this because this is a tragedy that should never have occurred."

Poland’s Foreign Ministry posted “sincerest words of sympathy” to the family of a volunteer who had offered assistance to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, without saying how he was killed. The Foreign Ministry said it is requesting an explanation from Israel.

Britain’s Foreign Office said it was aware of reports of the death of a British national in Gaza and was "urgently seeking further information.”

The strike on the aid convoy appears to be a friendly fire incident that Israel are responsible for

The "173 UNRWA staff killed" is as impossible to verify as the "journalists" who were embedded in Hamas.

None of the agencies working in Gaza will admit that Hamas have used the hospitals as their bases and that's why there was a major battle there, when Hamas regrouped. Jeremy Bowen at the BBC argued one of the huge arms discoveries at Shifa could have been used by security guards there.

No doubt there has been a catastrophic loss of civilian life but when you declare war on your neighbour you expect them to retaliate.

I strongly doubt that this was accidental. We're talking about a country the army of which is aiding civilians who deliberately prevent aid from entering Gaza, while shouting 'death to Arabs!'. Australian here. I just watched our PM Albanese talking about this on the ABC and it's a pretty big deal here. Australians are growing increasingly unhappy and unaccepting of this situation and want an immediate ceasefire. We support Israel and always have - but not at any cost.

Israelis are also very unhappy and demonstrating in the streets in tens of thousands and growing. They are demanding a ceasefire to get the hostages back and then a change of government - and they want Netanyahu gone. Netanyahu has been an obstacle to peace for so long that it will be interesting to see what new elections bring to Israel. Hopefully some peace and urgent work on setting up a two-state solution so that they can all just live their lives in peace.
World Central Kitchen victims remembered for going ‘extra mile’ to deliver aid

Soon after learning of his friend’s death, Josh Phelps saw the gruesome images of an Israeli attack that World Central Kitchen said killed his friend and six others delivering aid in Gaza.

“It was shocking,” said Phelps, a former WCK colleague of Australian aid worker Lalzawmi Frankcom.

He had just texted Frankcom - known as Zomi - the day before, when photos of the pair delivering food to a Native American reservation in Pine Ridge, S.D., popped up on his phone.

He sent them to her, and she responded with a heart. Hours later, she was dead.

Frankcom, 43, was among seven WCK workers who the nonprofit said were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza on Monday. The attack on the organization founded by celebrity chef José Andrés drew international rebuke. It has pushed WCK and at least one other group to pause aid operations as famine looms over besieged Gaza and pressure mounts on Israel over the rising Palestinian civilian death toll.

The others killed were a U.S.-Canadian dual national, three U.K. citizens, a Palestinian and a Polish national, according to WCK.

The organization said the team was traveling in the Palestinian enclave in vehicles that included two armored cars branded with the World Central Kitchen logo, and that it had coordinated its movement with the Israeli military.

In an apparent reference to the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces “unintentionally hit innocent people” and that Israel would fully investigate the “tragic incident.”

Phelps, who left WCK in 2021, remembered Frankcom as a person who could make lifelong friends in the direst situation. “You knew when Zomi was in the room,” he said. “She loved to laugh, loved to have a good time.”

The two met in 2018 after a volcano eruption in Guatemala, as Frankcom was traveling in Central America and taking classes online after leaving a job at an Australian bank. She began helping to provide food aid with WCK. Her work took her around the world, including Paradise, Calif.; Egypt and Turkey. “She just bonded with every community she worked in,” Phelps said.

The last mission they did together was in Haiti in 2021. “She was riding around delivering food on the back of motorcycles,” Phelps recalled. “Her sense of responsibility to the people we serve and to go the extra mile was really special - and also to keep a great attitude.”

That attitude took her to Gaza. When Phelps messaged on WhatsApp to ask how she was feeling, she wrote back: “I’m getting used to the drones but the booms still make my tummy go funny.”

Her death shook people she had met around the world, Phelps said. “She had a zest for life, a heart for service,” he added. “People will remember her.”

Australian officials condemned the strike and said they had contacted Israeli authorities and called for an investigation. “We expect full accountability for these deaths,” the Australian Foreign Ministry said.

The director of al-Najjar hospital in Gaza, Marwan al-Hams, said the facility received the bodies of the seven workers - six with “Western nationalities” and one Palestinian, whom he identified as Seif Issam Abu Taha.

Yousef Sharef said Abu Taha, 26, was a cousin working with the WCK team in Gaza whose death was a “big loss” to the family and a shock. “He was a friendly, lovely person, and he used to always do good things and to support people who need help,” Sharef said.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the British government was “urgently working” to verify reports that its nationals were killed and would provide support to their families. He described the attack as “deeply distressing” and called on Israel to “provide a full, transparent explanation of what happened.”

Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a Polish national was killed, extending its “deepest condolences to the family of the volunteer who was providing aid to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.” The ministry said it objected to the “disregard for international humanitarian law.”

The mayor of the Polish city of Przemyśl identified the victim as Damian Soból, a 35-year-old aid volunteer who the mayor said was killed in the Israeli strike in Gaza.

“There are no words to describe the feelings of people who knew this amazing young man right now,” wrote Mayor Wojciech Bakun.

Aparna Branz, a former WCK volunteer, said she got to know Soból while volunteering in Poland and Ukraine in 2022, describing him as “always smiling, kind, patient and ready to help anyone anytime.”

“He was one of the bright lights in those horrible months,” Branz said. She also remembered him as a devoted son who was often speaking on the phone with his mother.

The two met again working in the aftermath of last year’s earthquake in Morocco. Branz recalled that Soból was busy getting ready to leave for Rafah at the time, but still, “typical to Damian, he helped me navigate the logistics of transportation, of where to go and where to stay.”

During their work together in the early days of the war in Ukraine, “we didn’t talk about our reason for being there,” she said. “We just wanted to help.”

Have you spent any energy advocating for Israel to release the thousands of Palestinians it has taken into illegal custody, many of them children?

by Anonymousreply 68April 3, 2024 3:33 AM

No, because it wouldn’t change the dynamics except to escalate the situation. You certainly know you are referring to people who have been held and or convicted of crimes, but you choose to describe it as “illegal custody.” Unlike the hostages, including at least one infant, who committed no crimes.

We won’t agree on this. However, if Israel released all of its prisoners, the war would continue. If Hamas and the Palestinians surrendered and gave up the hostages, the war would end.

by Anonymousreply 69April 3, 2024 3:38 AM

r67, I condemn the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas. I always have. They should immediately release the hostages.

But, I don't about your vocabulary, but I learned the meaning of the word "disproportionate" a while ago.

And Netanyahu's response exceeds disproportionate.

He's exterminating Palestinians.

by Anonymousreply 70April 3, 2024 3:43 AM

R70, you clearly didn’t look into an actual definition of what “disproportionate” would mean in a war. It doesn’t mean Israel should stop when Palestinian deaths equal those from October 7. When the US went into Afghanistan, their objective was to dismantle Al Qaeda not to merely kill 3000 people to atone for 9/11.

I don’t like civilian deaths any more than you support 10/7 atrocities. It would be better if Hamas had not decided that their exposing country to certain warfare was worth it. They did the attack knowing what it would mean for their people. In reality. the ratio of civilian deaths are actually lower compared to other conflicts. Were the hundred thousand Germans who died in two weeks of the Battle of Berlin being exterminated by the Allies?

by Anonymousreply 71April 3, 2024 4:00 AM

The Germans had war arsenal. The Germans had troops.

3/4 of Hitler's military was on the Eastern Front.

WWII was conventional warfare.

What is happening in Gaza is not conventional warfare and defies analogy to the Battle of Berlin.

Israel must stop killing civilians “today”, the celebrity founder of an aid group said, after seven of his employees were killed in an Israeli air strike on Monday.

José Andrés, whose World Central Kitchen organisation has been sending supplies to civilians in Gaza, called on Israel to “start the long journey to peace” and said it should stop using food as a “weapon of war”.

Three British nationals were among the aid workers killed on Monday when an Israeli drone fired missiles at their vehicles, which were marked with the aid group’s logo. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said the strike was “unintentional”.

“Israel is better than the way this war is being waged,” Mr Andrés wrote in The New York Times. “It is better than blocking food and medicine to civilians. It is better than killing aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israel Defence Forces.”

He continued: “The Israeli government needs to open more land routes for food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today.”

Mr Andrés also paid tribute to his former employees as “the best of humanity” and “more than heroes”.

R85 they’re released by the Palestinian health ministry ≠ Hamas. While they are involved with each other, it is not the same entity, so you’re misrepresenting the situation. Also the PHM has a history of reporting deaths correctly, and enough credible agencies (incl agencies on the ground) have posted these reports as part of their reporting that there is credibility to them. But I get that this reality is hard for pro Israel weirdos like yourself so you pretend it’s fake. Very trumpy of you.

by Anonymousreply 88April 3, 2024 6:32 PM

The Palestinian Health Ministry IS run by Hamas. Hamas is the elected government of Gaza and is a authoritarian, brutal organization. Everything in Gaza runs through Hamas. It's like saying Russian's war casualty figures aren't controlled by Putin. The level of ignorance is staggering. I guess R88 is still running with those 500 dead! figures from the Al Shifa hospital bombing, that a: didn't bomb the hospital but a parking lot. b: was a misfired rocket by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and c: didn't kill 500 people.

Hamas was elected in 2005. But I agree. Palestinians by and large hate Jews and favor terrorism. They support October 7th. If they support extremism and terrorism and the starting of wars, as you say they do, then don't cry and scream when your enemy fights back.

Also, Hamas fires rockets indiscriminately into Israel every day. It's only the existence of the Iron Dome that such rockets don't cause immense damage. I imagine the constant fire and attacks is also why a portion of Israel has moved right and elected Bibi.

But it's always excuses with pro-Hamas people. You made me hit you! You made me rape those women and kill those young concert goers!

However, they quit killing each other.

Killing the World Central Kitchen workers is dreadful. I hope Washington can use it to pressure Netanyahu to quit. I've wanted him gone anyway. Maybe that would look like progress to Gazans. I had hoped Arab leaders would pressure Abbas to resign, but that idea seems to have died out.
Comedian Bassem Youssef says Israel will face "no accountability" for strike that killed World Central Kitchen workers.

Comedian and television host Bassem Youssef on Wednesday predicted Israel will face "no accountability" for its strike that killed seven World Central Kitchen workers this week.

The comedian, who has family members living in Gaza, highlighted Israel Defense Forces' ongoing bombardment of the enclave and suggested the international community would not hold Israel accountable.

“They are in one apartment, in one building in Rafah, sharing it with 25 other families. And, you know, at any moment we can hear a bomb drop. But it's OK, because Israel will apologize, I'm sure, as they usually do. I mean, like, I was so happy to listen to their sincere apology for killing the people from Central Kitchen,” Youssef told CNN host Christiane Amanpour.

“What's very interesting is the outrage, the global outcry. It's like, oh, how could you do that to Israel?” Youssef said. “We forget James Miller, a British filmmaker that was also killed by Israeli snipers. We forget Tom Hartland, which he was, like, also a British activist who was killed in the head. We forget Shireen Abu Akleh, the American-Palestinian reporter. It's like every time, 'Oh, Hamas did it, oh, we did it, we're so sorry. Let's continue.' It's just, there's no accountability.”

“I say it everywhere I go: If Israel today ended the war, they will be actually praised. It's like, thank you so much for not killing more Palestinians. Maybe they even give a Nobel Peace Prize to [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu. This will happen, you know, this will actually happen. Israel will be praised. There will be absolutely no accountability of what they did in Gaza for the past six months. This is what pains me.”
José Andrés says Israel targeted staff in Gaza 'car by car'

World Central Kitchen (WCK) founder José Andrés has accused Israeli forces in Gaza of targeting his aid workers "systematically, car by car".

Monday's strike which killed seven members of his staff was not a mistake, he said, repeating that Israeli forces had been told of their movements.

WCK workers from Australia, Canada, Poland, the UK and the US were killed as well as their Palestinian colleague.

Israel says the strike was a "grave mistake" and has apologised.

It has also promised an independent investigation.

According to the charity, the aid convoy was hit while leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, "where the team had unloaded more than 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza on the maritime route".

The convoy was made up of three vehicles, including two that were armoured, which clearly displayed the charity's logo. All three were hit during the strike.

Speaking to Reuters news agency on Wednesday, the Spanish-American celebrity chef said this was not a "bad luck situation where, 'oops,' we dropped the bomb in the wrong place".

In a separate interview with Israel's Channel 12 news, Mr Andrés said "it was really a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by everybody at the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]".

The bodies of six of the dead WCK workers have since been taken from Gaza into Egypt to be repatriated.

Their Palestinian colleague was buried in his hometown in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Tuesday.

Humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip is in doubt after WCK - a key provider of aid to the territory - suspended operations.

The UN announced it was pausing movements at night for at least 48 hours to evaluate the security situation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the strike as unintentional.

"It happens in war, we check it to the end, we are in contact with the governments, and we will do everything so that this thing does not happen again," Mr Netanyahu said on Tuesday.

IDF Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi called the incident a "grave mistake" and said "it shouldn't have happened," blaming the strike on misidentification.

US President Joe Biden has condemned the strike, accusing Israel of not doing enough to protect aid workers.

"The United States has repeatedly urged Israel to deconflict their military operations against Hamas with humanitarian operations, in order to avoid civilian casualties," Mr Biden said.

Three of the killed aid workers were British nationals. A Polish national, an Australian, a Palestinian and a dual US-Canadian citizen were also killed.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to Mr Netanyahu on Tuesday. On the call, he described the situation in Gaza as "increasingly intolerable" and "demanded a thorough and transparent independent investigation" into the killing of the aid workers.

Mr Sunak added that Israel needed to end restrictions on humanitarian aid and protect civilians, according to a Downing Street statement.

In other reaction:

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had "expressed Australia's anger and concern" in a long phone call with Mr Netanyahu, and that he expected a "full and proper explanation for how this has occurred"

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said he had demanded an independent investigation from Israel Katz, his Israeli counterpart

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said "full accountability" was needed, adding that it was "absolutely unacceptable for aid workers to be killed" by the IDF

Four days ago, WCK said that it had distributed 42 million meals in the Gaza Strip - dispatching more than 1,700 food trucks and also sending close to 435,000 meals by sea.

According to Cogat, the Israeli defence ministry body in charge of civilian policy in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, WCK is responsible for 60% of the non-governmental aid getting into the territory.

A second charity, the American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera), which was working closely with WCK, told the BBC it was also freezing its operations in Gaza.

More than 196 aid workers have been killed in Gaza since October, according to the US-funded Aid Worker Security Database, which records major incidents of violence against aid personnel. Not all have been killed in the line of duty.

Much of the Gaza Strip has been devastated during the Israeli military operations that began after Hamas gunmen attacked southern Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people and seizing 253 hostages.

About 130 of the hostages remain in captivity, at least 34 of whom are presumed dead.

More than 32,916 people have been killed in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says.
Israeli explanation for aid workers deaths 'not good enough', Australia PM says

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Israel's explanation for the deaths from an air strike in Gaza of seven aid workers, including Australian woman Zomi Frankcom, was "not good enough", Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday.

Israel said on Tuesday it mistakenly killed workers of charity World Central Kitchen, drawing widespread condemnation from the United States and several allies. The dead included citizens of Australia, Britain and Poland as well as Palestinians and a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada.

"We need to have accountability for how it has occurred, and what is not good enough is the statements that have been made, including that this is just a product of war," Albanese said during a press conference in Sydney.

Albanese seemed to be referring to comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video message on Tuesday in which he said that "this happens in war" as the Israeli military promised an independent investigation.

Celebrity chef Jose Andres, the founder of World Central Kitchen, told Reuters on Wednesday that the Israeli attack had targeted his workers "systematically, car by car." He said the World Central Kitchen workers in Gaza had clear communication with the military, which knew their movements.

Albanese said Frankcom was travelling in a vehicle clearly identified as an aid vehicle and it should not have been at risk. He demanded full accountability on a call with Netanyahu on Wednesday.

"They have committed to a full and proper investigation. I want that to be transparent and I want those findings to be made public so that we find out how exactly this can occur," he said.
Three destroyed cars over two miles: What photos tell us about the attack on World Central Kitchen workers

The airstrike on a World Central Kitchen convoy in the Gaza Strip on Monday killing seven team members has prompted a slew of questions about the Israeli military's practices in the war.

While Israeli officials have acknowledged the bombings — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country’s forces had “unintentionally hit innocent people” — they have released few details about the incident.

“It happens in war, we check it to the end, we are in contact with the governments, and we will do everything so that this thing does not happen again,” he said.

In an effort to better understand what exactly happened, NBC News has geolocated the three damaged aid vehicles abandoned along a 1.55-mile stretch of coastal highway in Gaza, using images posted by international photo agencies and cross-referencing them with satellite imagery.

In a statement, WCK said that the convoy that was hit was made up of three vehicles, two of which were armored and one of which had a softback. They were traveling south along Al-Rashid Road near WCK’s headquarters in Deir al-Balah, a Palestinian city in the central Gaza Strip. The coastal road was earmarked as an accessible road for humanitarian aid by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in March.

The northernmost vehicle, which lies just south of the Port of Deir al-Balah, appears to have suffered fire damage. The hood, trunk and doors are open and there are visible burn marks on the ground. A photo shows fire damage inside the vehicle, with charred World Central Kitchen stickers strewn on the floor and across the seats.

The second vehicle, roughly half a mile farther south along Al-Rashid Road, bears a large entry hole next to large WCK branding plastered on the roof. A sticker on the windshield says No. 1, along with another sticker bearing the logo of the aid agency. Orange, high-visibility vests can be seen inside the vehicle. Metal from the roof is pushed inward, jutting down toward the back seats. Blood is matted into the white paintwork and the dark upholstery.

In contrast to the first two vehicles, which were relatively close to each other, a third vehicle was photographed over a mile south of them. This vehicle, smaller than the first two, was the only one off the road, on a patch of land near some homes and tents. Leaning into a ditch, it is missing its roof and windshield and appears to have suffered more damage than the first two. Panels are crumpled or missing, with what appear to be blood and dirt staining the metal frame of the vehicle and the interior seating. The hood is covered with small World Central Kitchen stickers.

The members of the U.S.-based nonprofit group, founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, were leaving a warehouse where the team had unloaded more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid that the charity had brought to Gaza by sea earlier in the day. The charity said last week that it has served 42 million meals over 175 days in Gaza.
Drone pilots had the means to swerve the bombs away, but chose not to

It was not a single rogue missile that killed seven aid workers on the coast road in central Gaza between 10 and 11pm on Monday night but three precisely targeted missiles.

According to unnamed Israeli security sources who briefed the local media, they were dropped in succession from a Hermes 450 drone with sophisticated night sights and deliberately guided down on to the three clearly marked humanitarian vehicles travelling below.

Even though the drone pilots would have had both the authority and technical means to swerve the bombs away until the very last moment, they chose not to.

On the ground it was carnage. As the first vehicle was hit, several aid workers reportedly scrambled from it and into the other cars, before it was reduced to a burnt-out shell.

An emergency call was put in to the Israeli authorities, who had cleared the mission ahead of time, but to no avail.

As the two remaining vehicles continued their journey south on the Al Rashid Road, one was hit by a bomb that passed through the humanitarian badge on its roof.

The third vehicle got another kilometre and a half before it, too, was picked off. All that remained of it at first light on Tuesday morning was a twisted, blackened hulk of metal.

Gruesome pictures of the corpses of the seven victims – not all of them yet formally identified – started circulating on social media soon after, some torn beyond recognition.

Pictures of three blood-stained passports, one British, one Polish and one Australian, were also shared widely across the internet.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed on Tuesday in off-record briefings to the Israeli press that it had been targeting an “armed” Hamas operative.

A military lawyer, an intelligence officer and a senior commander would have to approve the strike, as per IDF standard drone operating protocol.

Yet even in the unlikely event that the extra-judicial killing of seven aid workers could be justified because of the presence of a single terror suspect, it later transpired he was not even travelling in the convoy.

“According to the defence sources, that armed man did not leave the warehouse,” reported the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. “The cars travelled along a route preapproved and coordinated with the IDF.”

The attack on aid workers could not have come at a more sensitive time for Israel, whose six-month assault on Gaza has claimed more than 32,000 Palestinian lives, according to Hamas, and sparked a devastating humanitarian disaster.

In addition to civilians, some 196 aid workers have been killed in Gaza since the war began on Oct 7 – more than in any other conflict, according to Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state.

On Thursday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague said “famine is setting in” among Gaza’s 2.3 million population and ordered Israel to ensure “the unhindered provision at scale” of aid and humanitarian assistance.

The ICJ took action as part of its investigation into allegations, vehemently disputed, that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza with its response to Hamas’s Oct 7 attack.

That the IDF should hit World Central Kitchen (WCK), one of the few humanitarian groups not overtly regarded with suspicion by Israel, is also a shock.

The group, which has operated in over 20 countries across the world, is independent of the United Nations and is seen as one of the few viable alternatives to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which Israel continues to assert has been irrevocably compromised by Hamas.

WCK operates 68 kitchens in Gaza and has sent in more than 1,700 trucks loaded with food since the war began six months ago.

It has gained a reputation for boldness, becoming the first group to deliver aid to Gaza by sea in nearly two decades by constructing a jetty out of rubble.
Diplomatic crisis erupts between Poland and Israel following killing of Polish aid worker in Gaza

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A new diplomatic crisis between Poland and Israel has erupted following the death of a Polish aid worker in Gaza, with the Polish president on Thursday denouncing a comment by the Israeli ambassador as “outrageous” and the Foreign Ministry in Warsaw saying it was summoning him for a meeting.

A 35-year-old Polish man was among seven people who were killed while delivering food to besieged Palestinians with the charity World Central Kitchen. Israel has called the incident a “mistake" that followed a misidentification. The charity said its vehicles were clearly marked.

Amid shock in Poland over the death of the charity worker, Israel's ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne, pushed back at what he said were attempts by the “extreme right and left in Poland” to accuse Israel of "intentional murder in the attack."

He said on social media Tuesday that “anti-Semites will always remain anti-Semites, and Israel will remain a democratic Jewish state that fights for its right to exist. Also for the good of the entire Western world.”

Polish President Andrzej Duda on Thursday called the comment “outrageous” and described the ambassador as “the biggest problem for the state of Israel in relations with Poland.”

Duda said authorities in Israel have spoken about the tragedy “in a very subdued way," but added, "Unfortunately, their ambassador to Poland is not able to maintain such delicacy and sensitivity, which is unacceptable.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, while a political opponent of Duda's, voiced a similar position.

He said Thursday that the comment had offended Poles, and said that the ambassador should apologize.

The deputy foreign minister was quoted in the Polish media as saying that Livne was summoned to a meeting on Friday morning.

A day earlier, Tusk published a comment on social media addressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Livne saying that “the vast majority of Poles showed full solidarity with Israel after the Hamas attack. Today you are putting this solidarity to a really hard test. The tragic attack on volunteers and your reaction arouse understandable anger.”

Duda on Thursday also called for Israel to pay "appropriate compensation" to the family of the aid worker, Damian Soból.

Soból had been on an aid mission to Gaza for the past six months following work in Ukraine, Morocco and Turkey.
Amid shock in Poland over the death of the charity worker, Israel's ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne, pushed back at what he said were attempts by the “extreme right and left in Poland” to accuse Israel of "intentional murder in the attack." He said on social media Tuesday that “anti-Semites will always remain anti-Semites, and Israel will remain a democratic Jewish state that fights for its right to exist. Also for the good of the entire Western world.”

So very true. The whole incident plays into the hands of the Jew-haters, who will milk it as much as they can to try to turn people against Israel.
American Father Killed in Israeli Strike Was About to Leave Gaza

The American-Canadian aid worker who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza this week was just days away from crossing the border into Egypt to “reassess” the safety risks in the enclave, his father told The Daily Beast.

Jacob Flickinger, 33, was one of seven aid workers for the World Central Kitchen (WCK) non-profit who were killed in Gaza on Monday. The group was delivering aid in Deir al-Balah when a drone-fired missile struck their vehicle, according to the NGO group, in an incident that the Israeli government has described as a “grave mistake.”

Others killed in the strike include Australian citizen Laizawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, Polish national Damian Soból, and Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutah, their Palestinian driver. Two British workers, James “Jim” Henderson and James Kirby, were also killed in the incident.

In his first media comments, John Flickinger—Jacob’s father—revealed that the aid worker was due to go to Cairo by the end of the week to “reassess what their needs were and how they’re going to proceed.”

“The situation was changing daily on the ground with Israel threatening to attack Rafah,” John told The Daily Beast, referring to the precarious situation on the ground. “That was the last text from him, that he’s going to reassess at the end of the week in Cairo.”

Jacob—who had previously served in Afghanistan with the Canadian military, according to his father—was based in Costa Rica with his partner Sandy and their 1-year-old baby before leaving for Gaza. Describing the aid worker as “a loving husband and new father,” John said that his son had been working various gigs as a personal trainer, coach, and wilderness guide to “feed his family” before his death.

Becoming a father had “changed Jacob in many ways,” John said. “He became very, very focused on raising his son… and they moved to Costa Rica to start a new, kind of a new life there and kind of build a life in a nice tropical country,” he said, adding that Jacob was “the best friend anyone could ever have.”

“But he loved to work with the World Central Kitchen. He believed in their mission. And when the opportunity came to Gaza, he was hesitant, but the need was so great,” John said, adding that he had warned him the situation in Gaza would be different from his time in Afghanistan.

Jacob’s family and friends have set up a GoFundMe to support his wife and son “to help his family reestablish themselves after his tragic death.”

“As the sole financial provider, Jacob’s family will use these funds to sustain themselves temporarily, setting up a trust for his baby boy, and helping with any flights and funeral arrangements,” the fundraiser description says.

This isn't the only instance of the IDF being undisciplined and trigger-happy way. The soldiers who killed the three unarmed Israeli hostages defied a direct order of their own commender not to shoot. And it turns out that it is regular practice for the field commanders to establish "kill zones" in Gaza; any Palestinian man who wanders into one is killed and posthumously declared counted as a member of Hamas. The IDF cannot invade Rafah. No matter what it was in the past, the IDF now has horrible judgment.

Hamas, on October 7, perpetrated a murderous terror attack, where even Israelis who were manifestly non-violent, including children and the elderly, were deliberately targeted. It's likely that the success of the operation surprised the militants themselves, who then attempted to cause maximum harm based on the accessibility and vulnerability of their victims.

I have closely studied virtually all the publicly available images (videos and photographs) of the murders and their aftermath. Besides the ruthlessness and brutality of the Hamas perpetrators, I saw that they also attacked guest workers from Thailand, Nepal, and the Philippines, who were neither Jewish nor Israeli, but who may have been regarded as supporters or enablers of zionism by accepting employment in Israel. Hamas inadvertently also killed dozens of Arab Israelis and Bedouins, making the onslaught seem more like a terrorist attack, where the perpetrators do not necessarily distinguish between the various ethnic or population groups.

Are you familiar with the term "subaltern genocide"? It refers to these types of massacres, including anti-white violence in Southern Africa, massacres of 'pied noirs' in colonial Algeria, and the Bersiap period in Indonesia. In all these cases, violence inflicted by the weaker party sparked widespread feelings of humiliation, fear, and anger among the stronger party--an offense that triggered a huge appetite for revenge.

For most scholars researching mass violence, it is also clear that the Israeli response in this war is indisputably counter-genocidal in terms of the scope and dynamism of the violence. Even if we leave the quantitative dimension of the growing death count out of consideration, an analysis of the qualitative elements of the violence indicates a complex, deliberate process of destruction. For one, the IDF has bombed Gaza, demolished entire cities, communities, and families, occupied the Strip with relative ease, has killed more than 25,000 people to date (including 70% women and children), injured 70,000, and left 1.9 million without a home. By way of comparison: the entire Turkish-Kurdish conflict claimed a total of 40,000 civilian lives, the war in Ukraine 11,000, the Srebenica massacre 8,000 civilians, while 4,000 civilians were killed during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Second, the attacks on hospitals, schools, journalists, universities, and other civilian infrastructures can only be interpreted as an attempt to render Gaza unliveable in the future. Third, Israel's use of 'unconventional' weapons such as white phosphorus has no military purpose whatsoever; it only serves to kill and terrorize civilians. Fourth, the indiscriminate arrests of Palestinian men, ranging from teenagers to senior citizens, seem to be part of the global war on terror: people who are even just suspected of maintaining ties to terrorist organizations are locked up with no due process, because the Geneva Conventions are deemed not to apply.

Fifth, targeted attacks on cultural heritage sites, including local archives in Gaza, public and university libraries, bookstores, collections of manuscripts, ancient mosques, cemeteries, temples, bathhouses, museums, convents, churches, castles, graves, and numerous archeological sites are eliminating Palestinian cultural heritage. Sixth, major world powers have helped sustain the asymmetrical power structures in the region, thereby giving the perpetrators immunity and frustrating the victims. Just like Russia protected the Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad and China protected the Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir during their massacres, Israel continues to receive virtually unconditional support from, mainly, the United States. Many American and European policymakers have shown to be indifferent to the lives of Palestinian civilians, which only encourages the perpetrators. The convergence of all these circumstances and forms of violence is typical of genocide.

Three British citizens were among the murdered aid workers? Oops.

by Anonymousreply 141April 4, 2024 8:53 PM

The aid workers were helping terrorists (aka Palestinians). They knew the risks.

by Anonymousreply 142April 4, 2024 9:04 PM

Of course civilians are dying and the infrastructure is destroyed. Using Western and Muslim humanitarian aid, Hamas built hundreds of miles of tunnels under civilians. They do not wear uniforms. Civilians kept hostages and prevented them from escaping. Hamas and other militants kill citizens with misfired rockets and intentional shooting. And they don’t really care because Israel gets blamed for it all.
The aid workers were helping terrorists (aka Palestinians).

It looks like the Western groups that have been aiding and abetting Israel’s enemies are suspending their operations.

by Anonymousreply 144April 4, 2024 9:56 PM

Netanyahu has propped up Hamas for years, contributing to the tunnel infrastructure and October 7 atrocities. He was determined to provoke the attack and use it as an excuse to exterminate the Palestinians and take their land. Why are you surprised that Israel is being blamed? You are shouting into the void, R143.

by Anonymousreply 145April 4, 2024 9:58 PM

R145, to be polite, you are a total idiot. You are taking little bits of stories and spinning them into a narrative that is only supported by your imagination. Except for a few crazies, Israelis do not want Gazan land. Which is why they gave it up over a decade ago demanding zero concessions from Gaza.

Netanyahu was trying to support Gaza’s governance, not war readiness. It was foolish, because the Gazans hate Israel more than they value their own lives and well being. And provoke the attack? By taking in more Palestinian workers then ever? Netanyahu is hardly a dove, but your mustache-twirling characterization could use some evidence. It’s absurd to think that Netanyahu would welcome October 7.

Maybe other countries would like to put up their soldiers to be on the front line against terrorism in Gaza and let the Israelis take a break. No, that just want to whine about it and pretend they could better, while Israel has to fight alone for the West.
Stephen Colbert Blasts Benjamin Netanyahu for Gaza Attack on World Central Kitchen Workers: ‘You Are Responsible’

In an unusual moment for late-night, Stephen Colbert spent his post-monologue segment dedicated to talking about the Israeli army drone attack that killed seven members of Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and sharing critique for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite the difficult subject matter, Colbert still managed to find moments of humor while taking on the issue.

Colbert began the segment by explaining that it’s his show, and they “talk about whatever we want. You know, my name’s on the building, nobody asks questions.” However, he noted they have a rule that meant getting into a tough subject area. “One of our self-imposed mandates is that, if we can, we talk about what everybody’s talking about. And today, what everybody’s talking about is something that’s pretty hard to talk about, and that’s Israel and Gaza.”

The late-night host laid out the background of Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and “the horrible inhuman cost of this conflict.” He noted that he was sure there were disagreements in the Ed Sullivan Theater itself about the war and the best path for Israelis and Palestinians to “achieve a peaceful and prosperous future.”

However, he added, “But I hope there is one thing we can all agree on: human beings should have food and water,” to cheers and applause from the crowd.

Colbert turned to the specific news of the day, naming the workers killed in a drone airstrike by the Israeli army and asking how this happened.

“Despite the fact that World Central Kitchen coordinated their movements with the Israeli military, and the team was leaving a warehouse in central Gaza after unloading shipments of food, they were hit by multiple precision Israeli drone strikes,” Colbert explained, citing news reports from CBS News, NPR and the Washington Post. “They were riding in three vehicles, including two armored cars carrying the World Central Kitchen logo on the roof.”

Colbert noted that Netanyahu had “claimed it was a mistake, but he wasn’t exactly apologetic.” He followed that with a clip of Netanyahu calling what happened “tragic” and adding that innocent people being unintentionally killed is something that “happens in wartime.” Colbert disagreed with the justification.

“Nothing just happens,” Colbert said. “You are responsible. If your answer is, ‘This happens in war,’ then maybe, consider ending the war.” The audience cheered for the notion.

The entertainer explained that the thousands of innocent people who have been killed since the war in Gaza began include more than 200 aid workers. Colbert then turned to what World Central Kitchen means to him personally.

“Many of you know, the World Central Kitchen is near and dear to my heart. It was founded by our friend Chef José Andrés to bring food to hungry people after natural disasters and in war zones,” Colbert expounded.

He then turned to Andrés’ guest essay in the New York Times released Wednesday in the wake of these deaths, titled “Let People Eat.” Colbert quoted the piece, which noted that the charitable organization was founded “on the simple belief that food is a universal human right. It is not conditional on being good or bad, rich or poor, left or right. We do not ask what religion you belong to. We just ask how many meals you need.”

The organization has delivered 43 million meals in Gaza during the conflict and 1.75 million in Israel, Colbert noted, citing a Spectrum News report. At which point, Colbert reached his first punchline of the segment.

“They get in there with the food, and they do the job. They’re like Seal Team Doordash,” Colbert quipped, before tagging that with, “Oh, you better tip.”

Colbert went on to note that World Central Kitchen has suspended its operations in Gaza following the airstrike, threatening to heighten the levels of hunger and malnutrition in Gaza to a level one U.S. agency called “unprecedented in modern history,” according to a Rolling Stone report.

The late-night host’s tone turned more hopeful as he went on to share Andrés’ call for Israel to open up more land routes for humanitarian aid, quoting from the essay, “We know Israelis. Israelis, in their heart of hearts, know that food is not a weapon of war.”

“That’s right. Food is not a weapon,” Colbert said, “except, of course, for Taco Bell’s big beefy five-layer burrito.”

The surprise turn into another joke included a graphic of the dubious food item, to which Colbert added a play on the quick Mexican restaurant’s tag line: “Live más… for now.”

Colbert summed up on the situation, noting that the organization is “just trying to do good.” He added, “I mean, they literally made a documentary about WCK called ‘We Feed People.’ The only way that could be an evil organization would be if that sentence ended with, ‘… To People!'” Colbert shared a mocked-up graphic of the poster for the film with the tweaked title in a bloody horror film font.

The host pointed out that Israel isn’t the only side that has targeted the group’s aid workers. “But instead of being welcomed, they have been attacked by the IDF, and Hamas has hauled members of their team in for interrogation,” Colbert said.

Colbert concluded the segment by making an appeal to the audience for donations to the group. “So whatever you think should happen in Israel and Gaza, I hope we can all agree that people should be allowed to eat. And if you would like to make a donation that would go toward the peaceful nonpartisan enterprise of allowing humans to have their most basic needs met, please think about donating to World Central Kitchen.”

Even that fat narcissistic cunt Dump is very unhappy and critical of the way Israel is deliberately targeting civilians and destroying Gaza's infrastructure:

[italic]“Israel is absolutely losing the PR war,” criticizing the images being played around the world showing massive destruction of Gaza. “You’ve got to get it over with, and you have to get back to normalcy. And I’m not sure that I’m loving the way they’re doing it, because you’ve got to have victory,” Trump said, without directly answering whether he was “100 percent with Israel.” In an interview with Israel Hayom last week, he said Israel made a “very big mistake” with the bombings in Gaza. “Israel has to get better with the promotional and with the public relations because right now they’re in ruin,” Trump added. “They’re being hurt very badly, I think, in a public relations sense.”[/italic]
