There were both Arab and Jewish refuges following the partition in 1948. The Arabs, for the most part, fled to neighboring Arab states expecting them to annihilate the Jews, which they tried to do many times. The Jews were expelled from all Arab lands. The Jewish refugees mostly fled to Israel. The Arab refugees were never allowed to resettle in Arab lands, instead becoming the world’s only permanent refugees in service of the “dream” that one day Israel will be destroyed.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 31, 2024 4:05 PM |
History doesn’t move backwards. Control of land changes over time. Wars create refugees. Refugees resettle. If a government launches a violent attack on a neighboring country, the attacked neighbor will seek to destroy the aggressive government.
People seem to think these rules are different for Jews: They are not.

by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 31, 2024 4:26 PM |
Complete nonsense at r10.
The Zionist armed forces drove the Arabs out using armed force and/or terrorism. The Zionists had been saying for years that they considered the UN partition to be a “foot in the door” and intended to take it all (don’t believe me? Read Ben-Gurion’s diary).
The Arab League forces assembled in the area were not there to “annihilate the Jews,” they were there to protect the land set aside for the Arabs in the UN resolution. And sure enough, when hostilities started, it was Zionist forces invading the land set aside for the Arabs. Doing exactly what Ben-Gurion had privately written they would do.
In 1948, there were indeed Jews in Palestine. Some were the Jews that had been in Palestine all along, mostly in Jerusalem. But most were recent emigrants from Europe, come with the express intent to take over and expel the Arabs.
The entire “foundation of Israe”l narrative is a myth and propaganda. Hasbara is built on a foundation of lies, because they know what they did, and what they are now doing, is more than just morally wrong. It’s monstrous. I mean, just look at how they lie, victim-blame and distort about what’s going on in Gaza now. Do you think their fable about the establishment of Israel is any less full of shit?

We’re there some Zionists determined to “take it all.” Of course. There are zealots on both sides. Did the Arabs attack in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973 with the goal of destroying Israel. Yes.
Wars create victims in all sides. What is unique about the Arabs in Palestine who left is not that they lost their property in war. That happens almost every day somewhere in the world. It’s that they were never allowed to resettle and have been brainwashed into thinking that history is going to be erased when it is not. They are being used as pawns by forces unconcerned with their well being. They are living symbols of the Arab fantasy that Israel will disappear. That is their unique tragedy.
As for the current war, you reap what you sow. A government that takes hostages and hides its military behind civilians has no standing to speak of human rights.

“Zionism” is an outdated word. It arose in a time when a Jewish state was an aspiration, not a historical fact. The farther we travel from 1948, the more the word should have faded into history. It would have, if it hadn’t been so useful for those who wish to treat Jews as unique.
Is there a word for French people who favor a French nation? Egyptians who believe in Egypt? Japanese people who approve of Japanese statehood? No.
The question of a Jewish state is now moot to all but those who wish to destroy Israel.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 31, 2024 4:52 PM |
Hamas should surrender and release the hostages.
And Egypt can feel free to open its border and let the Palestinians in.
I walked by a “free Palestine” protest in NY yesterday and they actually were waving Palestinian flags with the trans flags attached below them. The Gazans and those on the west banks really embrace the trans population apparently.
And of course everyone at the protest (in broad daylight, chanting in front of city hall on a Saturday) had their faces completely covered with masks and head scarves - most of them white people.
If the protestors feel so strongly they are justified and it’s all peaceful protesting, why are their faces always covered?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 31, 2024 5:01 PM |
Can’t they just remove the borders and mix everyone together as a single state? You know, like the United States and the rest of the world? The whole conflict is about arbitrary borders.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 31, 2024 5:11 PM |
That is one possible solution, r29. There are over a million Arabs who are citizens of Israel. However, there are zealots on both sides who do not believe in a mixed-ethnicity, mixed-religion state and they are prepared to use violence to prevent it.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 31, 2024 5:14 PM |
The United States is actually unusual. “The rest of the world” has always had political borders tied to ethnic populations with a few exceptions like Switzerland and Belgium, which have a lot of tension. The Pan-Slavic state of Yugoslavia has been split into ethnically distinct nations. Same for Czechoslovakia. The trend has been toward ethnic nationalism unless there is a strong imperial center like Russia or China.

Most of them would be happy to be left alone, though there are some extremists who want some land not currently part of Israel. Many of the Arabs, (and many non-Arab Muslims) on the other hand, live under regimes formally and explicitly dedicated to the elimination of Israel, and they have repeatedly attempted to achieve that goal.

There is a reason why those opposed to Israel’s existence are so quick to apply the word “genocide” in this war, and it has nothing to do with what’s happening in Gaza. Indeed, it is likely that very few of the people throwing this word around so freely have any idea what it actually means.
There are heavy civilian casualties because Hamas wants heavy civilian casualties for propaganda purposes and because they are cowards, hiding behind hostages and women and children.
That is not genocide.

US-supplied military equipment arriving in Israel, December 2023. (Ministry of Defense Spokesperson's Office)
The United States in recent days authorized the transfer of billions of dollars worth of bombs and fighter jets to Israel even as it publicly expresses concerns about an anticipated military offensive in Rafah, The Washington Post reported Friday.
Citing Pentagon and State Department officials, the daily said the new arms package includes 1,800 MK-84 2,000-pound bombs and 500 MK-82 500-pound bombs, along with 25 F-35s that were initially approved as part of a larger package by Congress in 2008. Israel requested the third squadron of 25 F-35s last July, which when delivered will bring the total size of the fleet to 75.
The bombs are expected to be delivered within the coming months, as part of a constant stream of armaments and military equipment that the US has provided Israel with since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip.
The additional fighter jets will take several more years. Only 36 of Israel’s original order of 50 F-35s have so far been delivered.
The announcement came on the same day that the US abstained from a vote at the United Nations Security Council calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages taken on October 7, without linking the two issues. The resolution, backed by Russia and China, passed with 14 votes.

I don’t think Israel is terribly concerned with “the narrative” told by progressive Americans right now.
The real narrative is that for all the hand-wringing and weeping over civilian casualties in Gaza among people who have no concern for civilian casualties anywhere else, not one of the Arab countries that has made peace with Israel has done so much as recall an Ambassador, let alone cut off relations. Why? Because the “narrative” on the ground is collective fear of Iran, not keeping alive the fantasy of eliminating Israel. That ship has sailed, and now Israel is becoming a powerful ally of the Sunni Arabs.
Given the choice between letting Hamas survive and avoiding the wrath of kids wearing silly costumes and face masks while they pretend to care about a situation they know nothing about, and destroying Hamas with the implicit backing of their former enemies, I think Israel’s choice is not as difficult as some like to pretend.

Harvard Law Student Council Passes Anti-Israel Resolution After Changing Voting Rules
The student council of Harvard Law School passed an anti-Israel resolution on Friday — after changing the voting rules to do so. The resolution calls on Harvard University to divest from the Jewish state and anything connected with it.
As the Daily Wire reported last week, the Harvard Law School Government amended its bylaws to allow for a secret ballot by its elected representatives for the first time in the history of the institution. The Harvard Crimson reported that the resolution passed 12-4, with three abstentions. It resulted in two members of the council resigning in protest, condemning the change...
Harvard Law School once produced brilliant legal scholars who contributed much to our society. Now, it harbors and panders to social engineers with no intellectual discipline who almost always get things wrong. Here is a perfect example. There is simply no definition of genocide that applies to Israel — but Harvard Law students don’t care.

The history is a lot more complicated than “Israel taking their land and their rights to live in their homeland?” But even assuming that your history lesson is accurate, and that history begins in 1948 (which, of course, it doesn’t), does what happen 80 years ago justify violence today? Does that principle apply universally to people who have lost their homes? May the native Americans slaughter everyone else in the US? May the Germans who used to live in what is now Poland take it back by force ? Can the Dutch reclaim New Amsterdam? Do you know anything about the partition of India?
Or is there a special rule that applies only to people displaced by the Jews?
