OP I thought of this film while watching Saltburn. Saltburn is enjoyable but The Servant is a near masterpiece.

Glaciers might be melting the polar caps might be crumbling but not even the passage of half a century has taken the frozen edge off this brilliantly icy film -Kenneth Turan LOS ANGELES TIMES

Excellent film! But...

It needs to be remade to feature the homosexual tension/relationship between the characters Barrett and Tony as Maugham intended.

About a decade after The Servant, for 1972's Demons of the Mind, Dirk Bogarde was shortlisted for Baron Zorn, and Robert Hardy replaced Eric Porter who withdrew from the film Hands of the Ripper (1971), which was made simultaneously.

R7 isn't there homosexual tension already?

I loved Dirk Bogarde’s dedication to grotesque roles. Though I am pretty sure he would have hated me in real life. His persona reminds me of a non-vegetarian Morrissey.

R12 He was a bit of snob.
