That they can still be that close in those swing states suggests how fragile democracy in this country has become. I think the decades of degradation in the quality of life for many Americans since the Reagan administration and control of politicians of both parties by the 1% have soured many Americans on democracy. They may be flailing about for something different because they believe, like Trump said to Black Americans, what have they got to lose?

This is literally democracy. Voting for an autocrat is democracy. If the Vietnamese vote for Ho Chi Minh, that is still democracy.
You are talking about the Republic. The Republic sucks. No one likes it. No one likes our system of government, that is why they are cynical about it, because it’s a farce.

Trump never loved New York. He squeezed it for easy coin, then bolted for Florida as soon as the locals figured out the grift. He’ll never go back, except for court dates. And New Yorkers hate his guts, too. Except cops, Orthodox Jews, and Nazis on Staten Island.
You’re just jealous that NYC has oligarchs, and Donald Trump is not one of them.

[quote]March Madness took a hard right turn into out-and-out irrationality Wednesday evening, when a Republican member of the Michigan statehouse baselessly claimed three buses filled with college athletes were in fact “illegal invaders” descending on Detroit from the southern border. “Happening right now,” state Rep. Matt Maddock posted on X, tagging Michigan GOP chair Pete Hoekstra. “Three busses [sic] just loaded up with illegal invaders at Detroit Metro. Anyone have any idea where they’re headed with their police escort?”
[quote]Maddock, an “ultra MAGA” Trump supporter whose wife was criminally charged as a so-called fake elector in the former president’s scheme to steal the 2020 election, attached two photographs as “proof,” showing a trio of charter buses on the tarmac at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, next to a chartered Allegiant Air A320-214.
[quote]It didn’t take long for others to pour cold water on Maddock’s wild, unverified claim, pointing out that Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena will be hosting the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Friday and Sunday. “Sure kommie,” Maddock replied. “Good talking point.”
[quote]Barrett Henderson, Gonzaga’s assistant athletic director, confirmed Thursday to The Daily Beast that the men’s basketball team did arrive at Detroit Metro on an Allegiant Air plane, and was picked up by charter bus. He said “a few other teams” also flew Allegiant to Detroit, and that there “were three buses there for another team at the time too.”

[quote]The truth is that Donald Trump undermined faith in our elections in his false bid to retain the presidency. He sparked an insurrection intended to overthrow our government and keep himself in power. No president in our history has done worse.
[quote]This is not subjective. We all saw it. Plenty of leaders today try to convince the masses we did not see what we saw, but our eyes don’t deceive. (If leaders began a years long campaign today to convince us that the Baltimore bridge did not collapse Tuesday morning, would you ever believe them?) Trust your eyes. Trump on Jan. 6 launched the most serious threat to our system of government since the Civil War. You know that. You saw it.
[quote]The facts involving Trump are crystal clear, and as news people, we cannot pretend otherwise, as unpopular as that might be with a segment of our readers. There aren’t two sides to facts. People who say the earth is flat don’t get space on our platforms. If that offends them, so be it.

R43 Polling is going to be hopelessly broken as long as Donald Trump is on a ballot. Plenty of his supporters will never tell anyone they like him (for fear of being ostracized or seen for the self-interested bigots they probably are), and plenty of his supporters will shout from the rooftops that they're going to vote for him but actually can't/won't show up on Election Day. R63, I don’t think that’s true at all. Women—especially those who work—aren’t like this. Now, they may end up having the same opinion as their husbands, but that’s just because they believe in the same things. Women now make their own money, they don’t need to rely on men for anything. That’s what this anti-women shit is about, taking away their independence so they’re dependent on men for everything, including opinions.
There may be some women who rely on their husbands for opinions, but they’re probably in very rural areas. I really think you’re barking up the wrong tree.

In well over the last 100 years, you have to be a Hoover or Trump to be the exception & lose. Biden's poll numbers were depressed by the number of Democrats who thought he was too old and/or wanted another candidate. Now that it's become clear that it's a binary Biden/Trump choice, Democrats are coming home. The Trump stock has no real growth potential.

The horror of this sentence

It shouldn’t be like this unless Biden is a historically bad incumbent

R117, do I need to remind you what Obama’s numbers were at the same time when he was running for his second term? The president many feel was one of the best ever?
by Anonymous | reply 118 | April 11, 2024 11:27 PM |
Thank you for reminding me r118. I was ever so hoping i could post this from the CNN article i linked above, which you obviously did not read:
Over the past 80 years, incumbents have, on average, led their eventual challengers by a little more than 10 points about a year out from the election. This includes nearly every incumbent for whom we have polling since Franklin Roosevelt in 1943.
It includes Barack Obama against Mitt Romney in November 2011. This is notable because a number of Democrats have tried to dismiss the current data showing Biden in trouble by saying that Obama had been behind at this point, too. That simply isn’t true.
In fact, the lone incumbent to be behind in the polls at this point is the man Biden succeeded and is likely to face again: Trump, who trailed Biden by about 10 points in November 2019.

[quote] [R114] what polls are considered accurate?
Here's a good source, As to my issue with RCP, it's the fact that its AVERAGE of polls - widely used on the right - wildly overstates republicans' numbers through its inclusion of not highly-regarded, republican-leaning, pollsters. That was certainly the case in 2022.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | April 11, 2024 11:49 PM |
R119, what article? I don’t see it. Are you using a sock puppet? November 2011 is not equivalent. It’s April. So take your MAGA poll and stick it up your ass. What you’re saying is simply not true, the race was very close in the polls.
Here’s the last one right before the election.

In fact, R121, there was so much talk late in '12 that Romney would win the national vote, yet lose the election, that private citizen Trump began decrying the Electoral College. He later was to find the great wisdom our founding fathers had in devising the Electoral College.

I’m looking at US politics from the outside, but as an interested observer I’d like to ask: has Biden ever stood for election and not been massively underestimated? The US media seems to enjoy dismissing him, but every time US voters get a say, they seem to vote for him.
He’s obviously too old, but his presidency has brought decency, stability and decorum back to politics. And to be honest, even if he had simply been elected and then slept in an armchair for 4 years, he would have done America a great service in evicting a maniac from the White House. If US democracy survives into the 2030s, it will be in great part because Biden gained the confidence of enough Americans to allow democracy to outlive Trump.
The next election will see Americans choose between a genial elderly gentleman who is occasionally a bit doddery, and an elderly lunatic who was a narcissistic menace even when he wasn’t demented. At least people now know what Trump is. If they vote for him, it will be because the American people have decided that democracy isn’t for them.

[quote]At least people now know what Trump is. If they vote for him, it will be because the American people have decided that democracy isn’t for them.
As with all elections, people will be asking themselves: "Am I better off now or was I better off 4 years ago" and vote accordingly.

Here I'd disagree with you, R128. If Trump wins, it will very likely be with a minority of the popular vote (as in 2016). Even counting the non-voters, there's a substantial bloc who support democracy and see through Trump and the MAGAts. Let's not generalize about "the American people."

In 1988 he ran for President and had to drop out after he admitted to plagiarism.
In 2008 he was the first Democrat to drop out of the primaries.
Does that answer your question?
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 12, 2024 12:48 AM |

True, Trump has a lock on 46% of the electorate. But he can't crack that number. And as more & more Democrats & Independents become resigned to their binary choice, they'll come home to Biden.

R154 Eh, they're always pissed about something.
Eternal indignation is a core defining principle for the modern American Left. They've always got something to set them off. If it weren't Israel, it'd be the plight of the tricolor bat, or the lack of dental coverage for preschoolers, or the fact that we haven't yet converted the Pentagon into a shopping mall for incense and pegging accessories.
Luckily for Joe, those cranks are neither numerous nor industrious enough to pose a threat to his campaign in November.
