Kinds of Kindness (2024)
Next movie by Yorgos Lanthimos. With Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, (mid-Ozempic) Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn.
[quote]Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
In select theaters June 21.

I love Margaret Qualley in everything I've seen her in.

The thumbnail image is a nice callback to one of my favourite scenes in Poor Things where Godwin Baxter dies.
Looks stylish as hell. More Emma Stone dancing, I feel like that's an inside joke between her and Yorgos at this point.

I'm in for anything Lanthimos does. I've not been disappointed once.

I echo R1 and R3. I've been a sucker for Qualley ever since she did Maid and I've loved that Greek director (don't make me spell it!) ever since Dogtooth. I didn't see Poor Things (and don't intend to), but I'll keep an eye out for this one.

Just saw this. I liked it, but I can imagine it'll be very divisive, it's a lot less approachable than Poor Things. I did think it went a bit too off the rails in the third part (it's a triptych), the first two parts managed to thread the surreal needle a lot better.
Plemons' skin is so bad, those closeups were brutal. He starts out semi-fat and ends up looking like a stick figure in loose clothes. So if you want to see Ozempic working its magic through the weeks/months, you'll get to see it in this movie.
Qualley is great in this. More interesting than Watson even in a smaller role, in my opinion. Never paid much attention to her before, but I'll keep an eye out for her from now on.

There is supposed to be gratuitous nudity and male/male scenes.
True?

There's a quick peck on the lips between Dafoe and Plemons. Other than that, tits by Stone, Qualley, and Hunter Schafer.

R1 and R4 Same! She's fucking fantastic in "Maid", I couldn't believe she was a "nepo baby". She was robbed in "Poor Things", she should have had more to do. She is someone who I will watch anything she does.

I adored "Poor Things"--a fantastic movie. This...It feels as if it was made for Yorgos' own twisted amusement and...I can't go there.

The name of this movie is atrocious, it's like it's intentionally bad. A bold move, let's see if it pays off for him.

I'm going to see this tomorrow at a matinee showing. I'm a fan of all of Lanthimos's movies and after listening to Mark Kermode review it (I trust him), it sounds like twisted absurdist fun times three.

Went and saw this today. Really liked it—not sure if I’d say I loved it. I honestly didn’t think it was funny (it’s often been described as a black comedy). I found a lot of it quite unnerving. To me, it almost played like an anthology horror movie. Twisted and bizarre in Lanthimos’s trademarked way. I think it will need a rewatch to fully appreciate, though I may wait for streaming to watch it for a second time.

I just recently worked my way through Yorgos Lanthimos’ filmography with the exception of his first film, “My Best Friend” (which I don’t even think got a physical release here in the States).
While I don’t totally love all of his films, I enjoyed “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (I found it more freaky and strange, but it managed to keep my attention), “The Favourite,” and “Poor Things.” I’m looking forward to seeing this new one at some point now that I’m caught up on Lanthimos’ films.
I like that he is evolving and growing more and more as a filmmaker.

Yes, although unlike in an anthology, with a triptych you get this arrangement where the individual segments are connected to each other with related elements and themes (they have to function separately and as a unified whole), so the borders between them are less solid. It takes some real talent to pull that off, I love that Lanthimos is experimenting with the form this way. No fisheye lens to be seen either, which he got so much flack for in Poor Things because it didn't make as much sense as in The Favourite.

Just watched it. It was interesting but I think I’d have been antsy if I’d seen it in a theatre. I’ve loved all his other films, but what’s with his movies having animals killed/abused?

R16 Yeah that hanging dog at the end of the second story was fucking gross. This guy just goes out of his way to be cool and weird, it's obnoxious. Killing of a Sacred Deer was ridiculous too but kind of funny. This is just bad. Also, Hunter Shafer's tits are too big and odd looking because he's so skinny and because he's a dude.

Is Alwyn any good? I've not watched anything with him in, but after the way he was dragged through the break up with the atrocious Swift, I'd like to see him succeed.

Watched it streaming. Awful movie didn’t bother to see the end. Loved Poor Things tho.

R19 Same. Did you notice the shitty, weird, way of talking they did in this? Not so much the main characters as the peripheral ones. The police chief in the second story and the police psychiatrist oh and his best friend? It was fucking annoying and distracting. Hong Chau is ever fucking shrill and insufferable too.

YL is very hit or miss for me. The Favourite and Poor Things were very funny and very well done. Sacred Deer was ok and has a good performance by Colin Farrell.
However, his aesthetic is repulsive. I don’t care for his “take” on life.

Yorgos Lanthimos, like Jordan Peele, is a terrible filmmaker who panders to dumb people that think they're smart.
The movie was awful but at least it was incredibly long too.
