“Firebird”- gay film and true story, adapted from the 1993 memoir “The Story of Roman”
I just finished watching this tiny foreign Indie film and I actually enjoyed it. It’s simple and cliche but well done, well acted and enjoyable.
It’s a true story about a young private and a fighter pilot serving in the Soviet Air Force who start an affair in the 1970s, at the height of the Communist Rule. Homosexuality was illegal (until 1993 when it was made legal, and then made illegal again in 2013) and if you were found you were met with the severest punishment.
The film takes place over the course of a few years and is actually quite lovely, at least to me. The reviews for it were very mixed, but I liked it. I know one reviewer said it was a cliche story that benefits from having two very attractive leads.

It's a 2021 movie, but Roadside distributed it so they slapped that 2022 date on it. Anyway, I recall discussing it on DL when it came out in the thread below, which is still open.

That was my take as well. The whole movie is basically just a vehicle for Tom Prior's unreal tits.

It’s a decent film. I like how pro-gay it feels. It’s a good depiction of two gay men who can’t be together (legally). I personally liked the performances best.
