Based on what's been reported, it seems she had abdominal surgery in January and the cancer was found after the fact. There was nothing more to announce until after the Feb. 27th news of the cancer diagnosis - the day William bailed on the King Constantine memorial. It all makes sense.

If it is caught in time colon cancer is highly treatable. I suspect that she and William decided to go public because of the kids, not just because of the media. They have been trying to be private about this, but obviously they have to talk to the kds and it is very hard for kids to be told "You mustn't tell anyone" when they're going to school and have teachers and friends. Except for Louis, they're not babies in that sense. So now it is out there, it relieves some pressure from the kids.

If it's colorectal, she wouldn't necessarily have a colostomy. For some patients they remove the colon entirely, in which case she would be left with either a temporary or permanent ileostomy.

Rarely they can skip the ostomy stage and create an ileoanal anastomosis right away. Any of those scenarios fits the bill of major surgery with a long recovery period.

It was those three difficult pregnancies that done her in.

Bad news, not what we wanted to hear. I suspect she had lumps or a mass, they went in to remove it, tested it, and found the cancer. So technically they weren't lying back in January when they said her sugery was "not for cancer". Parsing there, but accurate.

I did some googling and an abdominal hysterectomy can take up to two months to fully recover from. Reasons for doing the surgery abdominally vs. laparoscopically would be if large or numerous fibroids are present. So if that's what Kate had, it would make sense why she had abdominal surgery and why they initially hoped it wasn't cancer, but ultimately discovered otherwise. I'm sure more details will come out in time, but for now she deserves her privacy and I hope she pulls through whatever she is dealing with.

He said: “Rumours also circulated that the BBC was about to make an announcement. BBC News knew nothing, but BBC studios – the corporation’s separate production arm – did. They were filming today’s royal statement.”

Hopefully, the Princess’s characteristically calm and composed video message, recorded on Wednesday, will finally put a stop to the feeding frenzy.

It’s heartbreaking to think of Kate having to reassure the children: “I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.”

We understand the couple decided to make the announcement now, at the start of the Easter holidays, so they can shield the children from all the coverage that will inevitably ensue.

That is why the Princess has not just appealed for her own privacy but for that of her family, saying: “We now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.”

A vocal minority may have behaved appallingly, but the silent majority will have huge admiration for the courage she has shown.

In my 35 years of healthcare I took care of many cancer patients. Children and Adults.

Just my two cents. Possibly Kate went in for a hysterectomy. That maybe she had cancer then. In surgery the Drs would see of course the bowel(GI tract) etc. And absolutely do a biopsy which is SOP. Getting the result back quickly especially with a famous royal and still in OR. That also possibly then seeing the cancer had spread to the GI tract or worse(Pancreatic cancer or Liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer). Nessisating another surgery or a bowel resection to remove cancer. Which would explain a long recovery. CRC(colorectal cancer) needing Chemo is serious of course and can also be a prophylactic which is quite common.

Whatever it is I hope its stage one or two and they got it in time. And Chemo and radiation can be so awful people die from that. My heart goes out to her.

What if she has ovarian cancer and she had her breasts removed as a precaution because she’s BRCA possible and she had double mastectomy and reconstruction? I can see why that would take two weeks because breast reconstruction is tricky. I don’t know about nowadays but when I was a nurse I worked with some of the biggest reconstruction surgeons in the world and breast reconstruction failed quite often.
