There is no way to know now, but it was probably the scarlet fever she developed as an adolescent. When infection set into her kidneys in the days before anti-biotics, dialysis and the possibility of a transplant, there was really nothing that could be done to stop the progress of the infection, which worsened over the years.

Idk what was wrong with her, but I heard her mother was a Christian Scientist and refused to let her seek the adequate medical attention so she died?

Apparently Gable guessed it was kidney failure because the day after she left the set of the movie they were filming because she was ill, he went to check to see how she was and when he kissed her goodbye he smelt pee coming from her mouth. Eek.

It’s not true that her mother barred a doctor from treating her. William Powell (who had been dating her) sent his own doctor. But it is true that no one realized how very sick she was until it was too late to do anything.

Scarlet fever is basically strep throat that spreads throughout the body.

Before antibiotics, it was very common.

Even after. I had it as an infant in the late '70s when my parents didn't catch the strep throat in time.

I've had borderline-bad kidney results in routine blood work since high school.

The main suspect was Howard Hughes semen.

Some people claimed the infection was caused by an illegal abortion.

My mother had scarlett fever as a kid in the 50s, thankfully she never had issues with her kidneys so far.

Why didn't MGM come through for Myrna Loy? Her abortion left her sterile.
