Aramis & Estée Lauder - End of Era
Aramis (a part of Estée Lauder) has discontinued a number of classics. I think only classic Aramis remains. Gone are Devin, JHL, New West, Havana, Tuscany, etc.
Estée Lauder has discontinued many of their classics for women in their present form. And these present formulas are of course already reformulations. But the price had remained reasonable.
Now they have reformulated again, by Frederic Malle, changed the bottles to just one style, renamed them "Legacy Collection" - including Azurée, White Linen, Knowing - and upped the price 3x or 4x to USD 300 the bottle. If you see a present bottle around, get it while you can.
I know this because a lot of this is made in Switzerland and I just saw many bottles of Devin and JHL for USD 25 in a cosmetics store in a shopping center here, for working class folks. So the company is dumping old stock, and far away from the high street department stores so as not to damage the brand image.
The current Aramis is thin shell of what my dad wore in the 70s.

That bitch cancelled my favorite shampoo. It was a citrus scent from Origins. Then they decided Origins wasn’t going to do hair products anymore.

Where are you posting from, OP?

Switzerland, where Estée makes a number of their old classics. There are huge aroma chemical companies in Geneva.

Is Origins still around? My mom had the ginger souffle body cream and loved it.

Yes Origins is still going.

Since we're discussing cosmetics, is clinique still a big deal? They are always doing those promotional free goodie bags with a purchase and wondered if that made them more pedestrian than Origins, Shiseido and other brands.

Clinique is Estée Lauder.

Did not know that R9. On an off note, I recently bought a jar of spf day moisturizer from aldi's. It's damn good and under $5.00. It's called LaCura or something.

Yes some Aldi and Lidl products are good!
Lidl makes very good dupes/clones of famous perfume, by the way. According to some noses. Suddenly Madam Glamour Lidl is a dupe of Coco Mademoiselle.
I'm going to Lidl tomorrow for "Wood" which is supposed to be a decent homage to Terre d'Hérmès.
Last summer Aldi duped Acqua di Parma but it never showed up in my country. It was in UK though.

Estée is flailing and lost more than half its stock price trying to market to Asians.
They also garroted Aveda by going vegan.

Yes R12. They seem to think luxury is their future.
Perhaps the main problem is there seem to only be 2 markets now unfortunately. Crap and Luxury.
And crap isn't always crap. And luxury is often crap.
For me, Estée was the upscale American brand for middle class women of the 60s-90s. They bought it at Estée counters at "nice department stores". It was only a bit pricey, but somehow affordable to middle class folks and the products were quality. Clinique products were good. Fragrances were all excellent. Estée Lauder makeup was good.

Used to love JHL, but stopped wearing cologne or aftershave when I stopped going out to the bars when I turned 35.

The Estee Lauder brand name appeals to old ladies, young people won't touch it.

Aramis was a good winter scent. I still have some Aramis spray Cologne and deodorant. I can't tell you how many younger guys go crazy smelling that on a dad. Better than poppers!

That's cool. I doubt they ever smelled it on their own dads. But it does make a mature man smell sexy.

The way I wanted to bury my face in Danson's chest hair as a wee little gayling back in those days. Whew!

[quote]Better than poppers!
EVERYTHING smells better than poppers. Even Aramis, which I can no longer stand to be around.
The second guy I ever had sex with wore Aramis, circa 1971. I liked it and bought myself a bottle. I brought it home from school with me. After being nearly felled by the first whiff, my father told me I had to "take a shower and get that shit off your body, or else go right back to school."
Eventually, I came to agree with him. I can't stand the stuff now.

Aramis is a bitter leather chypre, with ash, and certainly in the 70s was a powerhouse. Hardly a scent for a high school boy, then or now.
