Do You Have A Close Actor/Actress Friend Who Had A Break Out Role, But Never Made Into The Big Time?

Did they: pick themselves up, dust themselves off and start all over again? Said to you "Oh well that's how the cookie crumbles?' Or become depressants, angry, bitter, boozers, druggies, recluses who disappeared from you and show biz?

If you break out its the big time, fool!

This thread is so specific it makes me think Miss Opee has something to get off her chest

A friend from college has a featured role in a big budget movie. He was the best thing in the movie. Had it not been a flop, he would have broken out.

by Anonymousreply 3March 18, 2024 3:31 PM

OP are you asking for the acting equivalent of a one hit wonder?

Nah don't know anyone like that

by Anonymousreply 4March 18, 2024 3:36 PM

What movie were you in, OP?

by Anonymousreply 5March 18, 2024 3:37 PM

No, but I've heard it's an awful feeling.

by Anonymousreply 6March 18, 2024 7:03 PM

Skip the preliminary skirt rustling, OP, and get down to business.

Who do you know, or who did you blow?

I know a woman who was an actress who never got her break. She was with a “prestigious” (at the time) acting group which toured small theaters in the northeast. Her sister, on the other hand, was a regular on 4 TV series over 10 years, all of which people from boomer and Gen X generations would automatically know. Two were network series and two were HBO series. She didn’t hit the “big time” but acted steadily as a supporting actress on television and had a substantial fan club. She was a lot more successful than her sister and I wondered over the years how that worked out. The sister I knew mostly worked as a restaurant hostess. She was engaged to someone i knew in 1990s.

R8 Was the steadily working actress's initials JB?

A friend’s son had a big supporting role on a long running network show. Show ended about 5 years ago and I haven’t seen him in anything since, I think he’s developed mental or drug issues but am afraid to ask.

A girl I grew up with had several terrific breaks in the late 70s and 80s. tv and film. extensive bio on IMDB

in a long marriage and performs locally onstage in CA.

She could still be performing in supporting roles, but I think she was just over the constant BS. She's comfortable financially /

Friend of mine became the face of a major corporation in a multi year ad campaign. She never has to work again. She would like to, but nothing else has panned out.

Child actress got a big role in an Apple commercial, only to start looking - sadly - more like her rotund slob parents. The moved to LA from the east coast because she wanted to be an actress. No pressure or anything. Poor kid.

We're both eldergays now but back in the early 70s my friend Tom was coming off a role as the boy Lee Marvin corrupts in "Paint Your Wagon," and then as the guitar-strumming baseball player in "Bang the Drum Slowly." I remember the day he saw me on the street and excitedly told me he was headed out to Hollywood for his first starring role in a movie called "Fury on Wheels," which unfortunately went nowhere, although Quentin Tarantino named it as one of his favorite films. After that, Tom headed into soaps and was on The Young and the Restless for years. He studied drama at Yale where Tennessee Williams saw him and became a mentor. Tom should have had a bigger career but he worked consistently over the years in things like "Oz" but never really made it as big as he deserved. Fellow eldergays may remember him in a commercial he did for Gillette's new "dry look." Damn, he was sexy, and a really nice guy.

R14 Flo?

by Anonymousreply 17March 19, 2024 5:20 PM

R16- Tom Lignon!

I first came across him on The Young and The Restless and always enjoyed his work. I agree, he should have had a bigger career.

Out of curiosity I went to his Wikipedia page and found this-

In August 2013, when Ligon was age 72, The New York Times[2] reported that he sent an intruder tumbling to the pavement below with a fist to the forehead and a ninja shout after the man had entered his Greenwich Village apartment through a window. Responding to later news that it was a "career burglar" he had chased away, and who was now in jail, Ligon told The Times: "Well, I guess he's not having much of a 'career' right now. It's like acting – you’ve got your ups and downs."

Good for him!

He’s been married twice. Is he really gay?

by Anonymousreply 18March 19, 2024 5:30 PM

Ligon

by Anonymousreply 19March 19, 2024 5:42 PM

Yes! R18. Tom Ligon. I haven't been in touch with him for a long time but yeah, he was gay with me lol. He was about 32 when we met.

by Anonymousreply 20March 19, 2024 6:01 PM

I bet he had a wonderful cock and the perfect dusting of hair on his balls.

by Anonymousreply 21March 19, 2024 6:13 PM

He sure was beautiful R21. I mean damn! I was only 20 when we met (at an orgy!) I'd go to his place, the same apartment on Waverly, where his best friend was photographer and Warhol buddy Christopher Makos who lived across the hall. Not only was he beautiful naked (I'm a sucker for blonde pubes) but a kindhearted person...he'd sing for me and play his guitar before we hit the bed. Fuck! Memories!!!.
