I think William’s true feelings about the media have made him lose his reason. That’s it, but people have gone crazy.

Catherine had an undisclosed operation and has been recovering in genuine privacy. Her sister in law would have made an enormous media circus of the same situation, trying to secure lucrative interviews and photoshoots documenting every step of the process. Catherine then released a photo touched up with bad photoshop, probably having stitched the best of a couple of photos together (imagine getting those kids to stand still, particularly Louis) and the media implodes. Clearly same media has never seen Madonna’s Instagram.

Objective response to Op question.

Well lets see there was an ambulance, surgery, a hospital stay, and 2 stay at home nurses caring for her. So following that series of events I don't think you have to be Sherlock Holmes just to guess she's been very ill and they're keeping her out of the public eye until she either recovers or they actually have to tell people if it either becomes permanent or she croaks.

Sometimes things are just as they seem.

She had an operation that required a decent amount of rest and recuperation time. They said it was "abdominal" so could have been something fairly major like a hysterectomy. I'm told that takes quite some time to recover from as it's very painful.

Remember she is being looked after by royal physicians who will multiply standard recovery times by at least three because they want to cover themselves. (After all, if they cleared her for 'work' too soon and she suffered, they'd be looking for a new job.) I had an operation on my sinuses a few years back and was signed off work for two weeks. I was mostly fine after a week but to go back to work early I'd have had to have seen the doctor again and getting an appointment is impossible, so I enjoyed the extra week off work!

In response to the swirling rumours Kate and William obviously thought putting out a family photo was a sensible idea. She has three young children - finding a good photo where all three are looking at the camera and smiling is hard, so she clearly did some touching up - and potentially combined multiple images. She admitted herself she's an amateur photographer so she clearly didn't do a great job, but she wanted to release it in time for Mother's Day, hence why it was rushed.

She's been seen in a car with William this week, so she's obviously fine. Once she does her first engagement (probably soon after Easter to stop everyone speculating) we'll finally be able to move on. Unless people start saying it's a body double...

I'd love for it to be something more interesting, but it boils down to: William has the PR instincts of a cinder block and has created this situation out of his own pig-headedness.

I do think she has surgery when they say she did. I don't think it was as routine/planned as they are trying to downplay it as. I think there were complications, like a blood loss or they had to operate an additional/numerous times. Having or fighting a post-op infection is a possibility, too. These all take an extended time to recover from and can affect you mentally and physically.

I have no idea what the primary surgery would have been done for. None.

I do think he's cheated on her with that chinless ghoul and probably with other similar looking, jawless ladies. No way is she going to divorce him over it, though. She'd stay because of the kids, the country, and because she's earned being Queen.

I don't think he wouldn't divorce her, because she is the most popular royal hands-down, because of the kids, and why would he bother? He can stay married and cheat all he wants, if he wants. There are no repurcussions for him because he's the heir.

Bowel surgery with a colostomy bag is still the medical condition that makes the most sense wrt the hospital stay, the recovery period, and her long term leanness and use of extensions and, more recently, wigs. Cancer seemed unlikely because they specifically ruled it out, but that might be back on the table after photogate. Both cancer and a colostomy bag are things they would want to keep hidden.

But it does seem like there is something additional going on. I’m not sure they’d have to try that hard to convince a sick Kate to stay, even if Will was cheating. If it’s the marriage, I think it’s more likely Will wants out and they are negotiating terms. Another possibility is that, whatever her specific condition is, her prognosis is extremely dire and she has lost a frightening amount or weight and/or wants to spent her remaining time with her children. I can’t think of anything else that would prevent them from clearing this up with a short video or wave from a window or better series of car drive shots except an extremely unlikely recovery or Kate playing hardball over separation terms. I think it’s more likely the marriage because that would explain Kate doing the photo on her own and resisting assistance. And I believe Kate did the photo.

If it’s either of those things she has my sympathy and respect. If it’s not, she’s sort of being a jerk. Despite all the pearl clutching around the idea, I doubt .01% of the population thinks she owes anyone the gory details of her ailment. But it’s no big deal to film a 60 second greeting while you are recovering or to release a reliable photo. That’s not violating some sacred principle of privacy.

I can't imagine William wants out of the marriage. I don't think there are marriage problems other than the usual, if any. They took an inordinate amount of time getting to know each other and building a very solid relationship. Whatever going on, my guess is that it is quite serious. I wish them all well.

I think he really loves his wife, who is quite extraordinary and took on one of the hardest jobs on earth, he adores his children, and is very close to his in-laws. He would be throwing that all away as well as probably flushing the monarchy down the toilet.

She's exactly as Kensington Palace stated back in January, OP - at home recovering from abdominal surgery and won't be back to public engagements until after Easter.

Everything is exactly as they said it would be, there is nothing strange going on. The truly strange thing is that some people can't cope with the idea that a "celebrity" might choose to drop out of the public eye for a few months. It's ok, the world is still spinning. Just get on and live your own life and she'll be back when she's ready.

In addition to what's already been stated here about her surgery and recovery time, the effect of all of this on her body has to be taken into account.

She's probably, because of hormonal changes related to the type of surgery she has had, and her age- pre or during menopause- she's gained 5 or 7 lbs.

Her wardrobe is in surgery, too. It's being entirely re-fitted and curated.

That takes time, thought and yes, grief.

My educated guess is that her once physical dimensions that suggested a gown draping from a couturier designer clothes hangar is a now a thing of the past.

And carrying an extra 4 to 7lbs may be nothing to us out here, in the Great, Fat Whores Universe, where we reside, but it's as wide as the Grand Canyon to her and her public image.

And that's not a knock on Kate, it's just an acknowledgment of reality.
