Ireland and he’s EU Irish. Company is Brexit British.

by Anonymousreply 10March 13, 2024 11:29 AM

Did you cover any of his per diem expenses during this road trip? If not, then I would say the equivalent of a lunch a day.

by Anonymousreply 11March 13, 2024 11:37 AM

HIS company is British? Or yours? If he is independent and did a good job tip him 10% of the total fee. Also pay for his meals when you have meals, if he wants. If he is on a salary to a corporation and not directly getting the fee you are paying, but he does a good job, tip him more generously and in cash.

I was going to agree with R3, but realized you said 8 days, but €200 for 4 people for 8 days is not much; assuming good service, I would double the amount to €50/day or €400 -- doesn't seem a huge sum (or a huge cost per person) for 8 days. Of course consider the overall cost, the stated tipping guidance, and the level of service.

For what it's worth, this guide for private chauffeur services in Ireland suggests:

[quote]Driver guide gratuity is NOT included in the tour price. Guideline for driver gratuity is €50 – €100 per day, but this in entirely at your own discretion and depends on level of service received.

His company is British R12. I’ll just be an ignorant American abroad.

by Anonymousreply 14March 13, 2024 12:20 PM

Being “an ignorant American abroad” could mean tipping in the first place.

I travel a lot, and will freely tip as a stupid American in some of the more impoverished/underemployed countries: Argentina, Brazil, India… even Spain and Portugal.

But when it comes to European countries, I try to come correct with the gratuity. ESPECIALLY the UK! They almost weaponize what we think of as graciousness and generosity to take “offence”.

We don't tip here in Norway as people here earn a living wage.

by Anonymousreply 16March 23, 2024 2:16 AM

Well that’s good, because cunt don’t generally get tipped!
