Oscars 2024- Official Thread 3

Zendaya looked gorgeous. Billie Eilish was amazing.

I hope Emma beats Lily.

Will Bradley Cooper have a meltdown after tonight!?

by Anonymousreply 603March 11, 2024 6:23 PM

Thanks OP!

by Anonymousreply 1March 11, 2024 1:49 AM

Between the PR about shitting with his young daughter (whom he said in the same interview he "wasn't sure he loved" at first) and yet another failed attempt at an Oscar, I fear Bradley will be a suicide risk after tonight's awards ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 2March 11, 2024 1:51 AM

The worst In Memoriam I can remember seeing -

TCM does this perfectly every year - can the Academy not learn by their example?

by Anonymousreply 3March 11, 2024 1:54 AM

R2 I need a zoom on his face when he loses best actor.

by Anonymousreply 4March 11, 2024 1:54 AM

I thought the dancing around the in memoriam clips was tacky.

by Anonymousreply 5March 11, 2024 1:54 AM

This is an extremely well produced show. One of the best in years.

Unfortunately it’s also boring as fuck. Someone needs to slap somebody.

by Anonymousreply 6March 11, 2024 1:55 AM

If Annette doesn’t win for Nyad I will literally set myself on fire.

by Anonymousreply 7March 11, 2024 1:55 AM

Maybe I missed any comments about it in the last thread, but I have to say I'm very glad "The Zone of Interest" has taken two categories. That movie was incredible.

by Anonymousreply 8March 11, 2024 1:55 AM

um, what was up with the tiny names>???

by Anonymousreply 9March 11, 2024 1:55 AM

Why can't they give Bradley anything. This was supposed to be his masterpiece.

by Anonymousreply 10March 11, 2024 1:55 AM

[quote] TCM does this perfectly every year - can the Academy not learn by their example?

It's because of that oriental lady who heads AMPAS.

She's horrible.

Time to get rid of her.

by Anonymousreply 11March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

Did they leave out Lance Reddick?

by Anonymousreply 12March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

The dog is the best looking and most interesting one there

by Anonymousreply 13March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

They should have had Eva Marie Saint, Shirley Jones and Estelle Parsons participate in the Best Supporting Actress segment.

by Anonymousreply 14March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

Get the matches ready, R7.

by Anonymousreply 15March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

Did I miss Best Actress?

by Anonymousreply 16March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

Ben Kingsley!

by Anonymousreply 17March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

WTF with all the names in text at the end? The only name I could pick out was Cormac McCarthy. That segment was a travesty. Just music and photos is all we need..

by Anonymousreply 18March 11, 2024 1:56 AM

Brendan!!!

by Anonymousreply 19March 11, 2024 1:57 AM

R10 Bradley needs to write and star in a Christopher Reeve biopic in order to get an Oscar.

Bradley needs to disappear forever.

Fixed it for you.

by Anonymousreply 26March 11, 2024 1:57 AM

Cage is funny!!!

by Anonymousreply 27March 11, 2024 1:58 AM

I'm rooting for Belize, R23!

by Anonymousreply 32March 11, 2024 1:58 AM

R20 he would need a smaller prosthetic nose and I don’t think it works that way….

by Anonymousreply 33March 11, 2024 1:58 AM

Matthew looks like a hospice patient.

by Anonymousreply 34March 11, 2024 1:58 AM

McBongo looks like he had something done to his face.

by Anonymousreply 35March 11, 2024 1:58 AM

Matthew McConaughey looks like a homeless meth head.

by Anonymousreply 36March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

I like Bradley.

There I said it.

by Anonymousreply 37March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

Cage looked better than he has in years.

by Anonymousreply 38March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

Is McConaughey sick? He looks like a desiccated beanstalk.

by Anonymousreply 39March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

Brendan looks good, but they used too much fake hair powder spray in the wrong color. Cage looks good too. Is Giamatti dating the Asian lady?

by Anonymousreply 40March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

Nic Cage looked hotter than Matthew McCoghneyhey

by Anonymousreply 41March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

I swear Cillian Murphy looks like that damned Annabelle doll.

by Anonymousreply 42March 11, 2024 1:59 AM

Cillian's hair looks like it was styled by a drunk lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 43March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

Mama Cooper looks so trashy.

by Anonymousreply 44March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

Matthew looks like a burn victim.

by Anonymousreply 45March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

r39, his face never bounced back when he lost all that weight for Dallas Buyers Club.

by Anonymousreply 46March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

How is Cillian pronounced Killian?

by Anonymousreply 47March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

CIllian. He's so beautiful!

by Anonymousreply 48March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

Bradley Cooper is about to Mommie Dearest.

by Anonymousreply 49March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

BRADLEY!!

by Anonymousreply 50March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

OMG McConaughey looks like shit!

A piece of bacon in a tux.

Is he doing a Dallas Buyers Club sequel?

by Anonymousreply 51March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

Mama Cooper looks like Mrs. madoff

by Anonymousreply 52March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

R42 can’t unsee! lol!

by Anonymousreply 53March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

[quote] I like Bradley.

[quote] There I said it.

Bradley is clearly posting on Datalounge from his phone.

by Anonymousreply 54March 11, 2024 2:00 AM

Murphy be short.

by Anonymousreply 55March 11, 2024 2:01 AM

Good for Cillian. I remember him from Red Eye. Beautiful boy.

by Anonymousreply 56March 11, 2024 2:01 AM

How much of Cillian’s face is face and how much of it is filler? Like 50/50?

by Anonymousreply 57March 11, 2024 2:01 AM

Is Bradley getting up to leave?

by Anonymousreply 58March 11, 2024 2:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 67March 11, 2024 2:02 AM

I thought Cooper won an Oscar for that Clint Eastwood movie.

by Anonymousreply 68March 11, 2024 2:02 AM

I think a Hunter Biden biopic might be a good Oscar vehicle for Bradley.

by Anonymousreply 69March 11, 2024 2:02 AM

Cillian deserves this. He was great in the movie. I don’t really like him, though.

by Anonymousreply 70March 11, 2024 2:02 AM

Cillian is beautiful but he is a bit too smooth faced. It’s ok to age a bit.

by Anonymousreply 71March 11, 2024 2:02 AM

Cillian has. Wig?

by Anonymousreply 72March 11, 2024 2:02 AM

Haha the shady camera people zoomed on Bradley Cooper at the end of Cillian's speech!

Lol!!

by Anonymousreply 73March 11, 2024 2:03 AM

R58 my thought too. He looked like "fuck I'm outta here"

by Anonymousreply 74March 11, 2024 2:03 AM

I just checked and Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino are listed as presenters. They must be there for Best Picture.

by Anonymousreply 75March 11, 2024 2:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 76March 11, 2024 2:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 77March 11, 2024 2:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 85March 11, 2024 2:04 AM

About twenty years too late, but Yes!

by Anonymousreply 86March 11, 2024 2:05 AM

Irish shit is always pronounced weird. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Cillian” is pronounced “cruller” or “Shelly” or something.

by Anonymousreply 87March 11, 2024 2:05 AM

Play the music off for Nolan

by Anonymousreply 88March 11, 2024 2:05 AM

Time to reboot The Hangover.

Actually, they could have The Hangover 4 or 5 or wherever it's at feature the Copper character as having gone on to success in acting and when he loses a major award he goes back to Las Vegas with his buddies to grieve and forget about it. Hijinks ensue.

by Anonymousreply 89March 11, 2024 2:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 94March 11, 2024 2:05 AM

Why didn't Nolan and RDJ get along?

by Anonymousreply 95March 11, 2024 2:06 AM

I don't know about you but I probably wouldn't ever take an acting class from Bradley Cooper or Glenn Close.

by Anonymousreply 96March 11, 2024 2:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 97March 11, 2024 2:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 98March 11, 2024 2:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 99March 11, 2024 2:06 AM

Halle Berry is one of the Best Actress presenters.

by Anonymousreply 100March 11, 2024 2:07 AM

R92 Or Niamh.

by Anonymousreply 101March 11, 2024 2:07 AM

Time is running out and I’m still waiting for them to award a second honorary prize to Sandra Bullock for her brave performance in The Blind Side

by Anonymousreply 102March 11, 2024 2:07 AM

r95, I have a feeling that Nolan is a very surgical exacting man, and RDJ is a loose canon.

by Anonymousreply 103March 11, 2024 2:07 AM

If Bradley wants an Oscar. He should write a Gretchen Whitmer biopic and star as Big Gretch with the help of intense makeup, prosthetics, and wigs.

by Anonymousreply 104March 11, 2024 2:07 AM

Flo Pugh is there because she’s in Oppenheimer but she’s not presenting or anything. Sitting far back.

by Anonymousreply 107March 11, 2024 2:08 AM

Bradley could play a transgender drag queen with Aids to win an Oscar

by Anonymousreply 108March 11, 2024 2:08 AM

Matt Damon won the Oscar early and told Graham Norton it was fleeting. He couldn't imagine waiting until he was 70 to win one and be like - that's it?

He should talk to Bradley.

by Anonymousreply 109March 11, 2024 2:08 AM

I find Nolan’s films a bit cold but he is a meticulous filmmaker.

by Anonymousreply 110March 11, 2024 2:08 AM

I loved Emma’s speech.

by Anonymousreply 194March 11, 2024 2:18 AM

Emma's speech was lovely.

So happy for her!

by Anonymousreply 195March 11, 2024 2:19 AM

Emma was the right choice.

It was a real performance as a true lead that stood out—she had to create this basically sci-fi character and do a lot of wild and brave shit.

Lily Gladstone was a supporting performance and not that great. Enough with the political handouts.

by Anonymousreply 202March 11, 2024 2:20 AM

No Jean Hersholt award?

by Anonymousreply 203March 11, 2024 2:20 AM

He looks good.

by Anonymousreply 204March 11, 2024 2:20 AM

I'm glad Emma won. I remember being so impressed with a scene in Crazy Stupid Love where she conveyed surprise, panic, loss, and then fortitude in her eyes without any dialogue whatsoever in a space of 30 seconds.

Trump's Truth Social post:

[quote]Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous. Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years - Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

by Anonymousreply 233March 11, 2024 2:23 AM

Oppenheimer wins 7 Oscars, which is below where most people were expecting it - 9 was seen as likely. The Screenplay and Sound losses were surprises.

That being said, no big surprises in important categories. Even the only horse race, Best Actress, went to the most likely winner, Emma Stone.

It’s really a sign of the disservice the awards show complex has done to the ceremony. Everything is known ahead of time. Voters are generally reluctant to suddenly switch at the last moment to somebody who has accepted awards for the past two months.

Social Media (especially X) is all over what Emma Stone said about Kimmel after he made his jokes about RDJ. The camera shot to her just as she turned to her side and said something. 'Lip reading experts' weighed in and the consensus is she said to the guy next to her, 'What a prick'.

As of this morning, I have seen all 10 films that were up for Best Picture. I get the achievements of Oppenheimer, but I don’t think it was the best of the year. “Long” doesn’t always mean “best.” . Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Poor Things, and American Fiction were better.

Where was Michelle Pfeiffer???

by Anonymousreply 372March 11, 2024 3:07 AM

Dune Part Deux and Wicked will duke it out over the visual effects, production design and sound categories next year.

Why did that mediocrity Kate McKinnon get so much camera time. I know she was in Barbie but still.

I should think that AMPAS will be, like, nothing could ever top “I’m Just Ken” so let’s go out on a high and never have numbers from the song category again. Oh, wait, there could be new songs inserted intio Wicked and Kiss of the Spider Woman and would be performed by Ariana Grande and JLo, respectively. Never mind.

Excellent point, R389. by Anonymousreply 406March 11, 2024 3:22 AM

R394, I think it must be difficult for RDJ to know how to present himself. People love him for being the arrogant but damaged Tony Stark/Sherlock and he's admitted he has to remind himself he's not either one of them.

His awards persona is geared towards that audience-pleasing schtick. Which can get a bit obnoxious.

I respect the hell out of him for dealing with the addiction issues and keeping his nose to the grindstone. I hope he can continue - he's got some interesting performances left in him.

And he still has the most beautiful eyes on any man in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 407March 11, 2024 3:22 AM

I listened to the audiobook version of Killers of the Flower Moon right after it was released and back then I thought it would be good material for a limited series vs a movie. It kind of reminds me of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,-very good book, but it didn't work well as a film adaptation.

by Anonymousreply 416March 11, 2024 3:29 AM

It's also the more surprising of the two wins so it's a different reaction emotionally. People myself included just recently started calling the upset after watching the movie. II'm sure she knew she had a shot but that Lily Gladstone would probably win.

by Anonymousreply 417March 11, 2024 3:32 AM

Mo was blacklisted by Tyler and Oprah. If Da'Vine doesn't get in their crosshairs, she'll be Da'Fine.

by Anonymousreply 428March 11, 2024 3:43 AM

Da’vine doesn’t bother anyone and doesn’t seem problematic. Unlike Monique.

by Anonymousreply 429March 11, 2024 3:44 AM

The hatred of Lily Gladstone on this thread is puzzling to me. She gave a decent performance for what was required. And, believe it or not, having a Native American actress win would be a genuinely big deal and also a good thing. It's one thing to say that Stine (or any other actress) was better. But some seem to insinuate that she is talent-free fraud and the whole thing was cooked up by ANTIFA. Which is not the case.

by Anonymousreply 430March 11, 2024 3:45 AM

Mo'Nique allowed her "daddy," aka husband/manager, to get her blackballed. I see DaVine having a career similar to that of Octavia Spencer.

by Anonymousreply 431March 11, 2024 3:46 AM

STONE and not STINE, of course...

by Anonymousreply 432March 11, 2024 3:46 AM

"I’m sure Da’Vine’s mailbox will be filled with top-notch scripts and starring role offers..you know, just like Mo’Nique."

I actually think that's what makes wins like hers a bigger deal in some ways. It may not lead to bigger and better things; so nice to have the roles and awards when there's an opportunity. I figure she'll get some work. She's not unliked as Monique was/is.

Margot Robbie didn't wasn't even nominated, and she's not going to suffer for work by any means. I don't think all Oscar winner automatically get consistent stream of great work for years on end.

by Anonymousreply 433March 11, 2024 3:48 AM

I am not immediately worried about Da'Vine's career prospects... I'm more concerned that Da'Vine needs to get on da'treadmill.

I was genuinely concerned that she was going to stroke out during her speech.

Lovely performance, lovely woman, but she seemed to be having trouble breathing.

by Anonymousreply 434March 11, 2024 3:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 435March 11, 2024 3:53 AM

Can't speak for the others, but I like Gladstone, R430. But, putting her in the BA instead of BSA category was category fraud. Her role wasn't novel, other than being a NA. Plus, the category was packed with amazing performances. Everyone was more deserving, even Carey.

The real crime is her role choices are limited for several reasons, not that she didn't when this specific award.

by Anonymousreply 439March 11, 2024 3:57 AM

[quote] There’s something especially brutal about seeing the cast and crew of a really solid movie leave empty-handed. That was the case for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which came in with 10 nominations and left without a single win – not even for Lily Gladstone, who lost best actress to Emma Stone in what was arguably the night’s biggest upset.

[quote] Notoriously, two films have fared worse: “The Color Purple” and “The Turning Point,” each with 11 nominations and zero statues. But “Killers” grants Martin Scorsese a dubious honor. He is now the first director to have helmed two films that were nominated for ten awards but won none, a feat that he previously pulled off with “Gangs of New York.”

The racism comments are nonsense. But she did not do herself any favors in the public perception department with the non-binary nonsense and the chip on her shoulder she seemed to carry during this silly and obnoxious awards season.

There was zero need for that and it came across as entitled and narcissistic instead of expressing gratitude for a rare opportunity for an essentially unknown actress.

She may be lovely but she created this unlikable aura around her.

by Anonymousreply 455March 11, 2024 4:23 AM

Margot Robbie has reached max saturation point. If she was smart, she'd lay low for a year and a half and maybe just quietly produce some quality things without having to star in them.

by Anonymousreply 483March 11, 2024 4:53 AM

So despite all the 'Oscar Buzz' Sarah Haines heard about 'The Color Purple', and was talking about back in December, the horrible movie was nominated for one category and walked away empty handed. Let's see how they spin this on 'The View' tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 484March 11, 2024 4:55 AM

America’s dress was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 485March 11, 2024 4:56 AM

Did I miss the discussion of how Jimmy Kimmel basically 'outed' Bradley Cooper for always bringing his mom as his date?

Lupita always shows up and knows how to be a star.

by Anonymousreply 492March 11, 2024 5:03 AM

Oppenheimer did everything an epic movie should do and justly won the top prize. I had no doubt that Christoper Nolan would win, he did an intelligent job as did Cillian Murphy. There really was no competition, in my opinion. I wish more movies could be as deserving.

by Anonymousreply 493March 11, 2024 5:05 AM

It’s creepy that Bradley always brings his mom. Come out come out wherever you are.

by Anonymousreply 499March 11, 2024 5:09 AM

Plus, R493, it was a somewhat "difficult," involved, adult film that actually did great at the box office. Top notch all around.

by Anonymousreply 514March 11, 2024 5:56 AM

It was a pretty great show, if a little light on “star power”…

But, I get them trying to appeal to a wider range of viewers by having young presenters like Bad Bunny and Zendaya.

by Anonymousreply 515March 11, 2024 5:58 AM

I thought this was the BEST Oscars show in recent history. Yeah, I am sick of awards shows. I watched the rest of the awards pack here and there over the past couple of months. Bad, bad stuff. But this was wonderful for a change. Big surprise for me, don't know about others here but it was a great success IMO.

by Anonymousreply 516March 11, 2024 5:58 AM

I'll be like I did with Titantic and Gladiator. So pushed for how great it was. It was shoved down my throat and I don't care for that.

I watched both of them at least 3 years after their time, and while good, they weren't ASTOUNDING and worth all the awards.

I've continued to do the same. I'll watch them in my own time and not because of hype or actors. I'll watch it and judge it if i want to and not because some academy thinks it's great or it's some part of a social movement.

fuck that.

Mary R385, you're ridiculous. Gosling looked great.

by Anonymousreply 576March 11, 2024 2:19 PM

I'm just gonna say about Gladstone, I'm glad she didn't win because it shows the Academy isn't solely performative. Emma Stone took on a weird and arguably unappealing role and knocked it out of the park. She deserved her Oscar. Gladstone's part was limited and probably wrong category. So the universe didn't pander. That's actually a really good thing in my view.

And here's the thing... maybe this edges Hollywood along a path where an actress like Lily Gladstone can play any part, not just Native American parts. I watch an Australian comedy called Fisk. Aboriginal Australians are cast throughout the series, in parts - not Aboriginal parts. It's refreshing. Noticed the same thing when I went through a phase of watching European cop procedurals on Netflix. The absolute majority of lead cop parts were played by women. And there was virtually no oh, it's so hard being a lady cop scripting. They were as tough and complex and multidimensional as any character, but they weren't mired in the exploration of the female experience. There was no self-consciousness about the casting. I think that's what Hollywood needs to move beyond. Instead of message pictures, the message in the picture can be delivered as easily through the casting as the scripting.

by Anonymousreply 577March 11, 2024 2:22 PM

Why did so many actresses seem to be smothered by ruffles this year?

by Anonymousreply 578March 11, 2024 2:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 579March 11, 2024 2:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 587March 11, 2024 2:51 PM

R580, I wrote it, I know what I intended and no it is not racist, so don't be annoying or thick.

I did not say nor intend to imply that if a POC wins an award it is performative. What I said is that despite the strength of Stone's performance and the bravery in taking the part, I could see Hollywood giving it to Gladstone in this instance because they're performative and frightened of Twitter. Sorry you misunderstood.

R588 In the last 10 years, one non-white actress won best actress. I know to some, they don't see a problem with this. They think it is well earned and perhaps but the Oscars are not performative. Gladstone had a strong performance and she would have earned that award.

by Anonymousreply 602March 11, 2024 4:05 PM

That was actually one of the more entertaining Oscars in a while. It had just the right amount of old school grandeur, some great bits (John Cena, Spielberg/Kate, even the normally John Mulaney hit), Jimmy had the clickbait line of the night (jail time) and there was even a *somewhat* surprise win (Emma).

I really enjoyed the entire broadcast.

I hate saying this, but it also seemed less "woke" or whatever that's called now. It just felt less forced or preachy. Both in the general tone and in the most of the speeches given.
