Thanks OP!

Between the PR about shitting with his young daughter (whom he said in the same interview he "wasn't sure he loved" at first) and yet another failed attempt at an Oscar, I fear Bradley will be a suicide risk after tonight's awards ceremony.

The worst In Memoriam I can remember seeing -
TCM does this perfectly every year - can the Academy not learn by their example?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 11, 2024 1:54 AM |
R2 I need a zoom on his face when he loses best actor.

I thought the dancing around the in memoriam clips was tacky.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 11, 2024 1:54 AM |
This is an extremely well produced show. One of the best in years.
Unfortunately it’s also boring as fuck. Someone needs to slap somebody.

Maybe I missed any comments about it in the last thread, but I have to say I'm very glad "The Zone of Interest" has taken two categories. That movie was incredible.

It's because of that oriental lady who heads AMPAS.
She's horrible.
Time to get rid of her.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | March 11, 2024 2:08 AM |

Emma was the right choice.
It was a real performance as a true lead that stood out—she had to create this basically sci-fi character and do a lot of wild and brave shit.
Lily Gladstone was a supporting performance and not that great. Enough with the political handouts.

Trump's Truth Social post:
[quote]Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous. Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years - Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Oppenheimer wins 7 Oscars, which is below where most people were expecting it - 9 was seen as likely. The Screenplay and Sound losses were surprises.
That being said, no big surprises in important categories. Even the only horse race, Best Actress, went to the most likely winner, Emma Stone.
It’s really a sign of the disservice the awards show complex has done to the ceremony. Everything is known ahead of time. Voters are generally reluctant to suddenly switch at the last moment to somebody who has accepted awards for the past two months.

R327, it's funny you mentioned that because I do recall a brief shot of Emma in the audience after one of Kimmel's jokes in which she looked annoyed about something. Of course, that could've been something entirely different.

Where was Michelle Pfeiffer???

Dune Part Deux and Wicked will duke it out over the visual effects, production design and sound categories next year.
Why did that mediocrity Kate McKinnon get so much camera time. I know she was in Barbie but still.
I should think that AMPAS will be, like, nothing could ever top “I’m Just Ken” so let’s go out on a high and never have numbers from the song category again. Oh, wait, there could be new songs inserted intio Wicked and Kiss of the Spider Woman and would be performed by Ariana Grande and JLo, respectively. Never mind.

R394, I think it must be difficult for RDJ to know how to present himself. People love him for being the arrogant but damaged Tony Stark/Sherlock and he's admitted he has to remind himself he's not either one of them.
His awards persona is geared towards that audience-pleasing schtick. Which can get a bit obnoxious.
I respect the hell out of him for dealing with the addiction issues and keeping his nose to the grindstone. I hope he can continue - he's got some interesting performances left in him.
And he still has the most beautiful eyes on any man in Hollywood.

I listened to the audiobook version of Killers of the Flower Moon right after it was released and back then I thought it would be good material for a limited series vs a movie. It kind of reminds me of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,-very good book, but it didn't work well as a film adaptation.

It's also the more surprising of the two wins so it's a different reaction emotionally. People myself included just recently started calling the upset after watching the movie. II'm sure she knew she had a shot but that Lily Gladstone would probably win.

The hatred of Lily Gladstone on this thread is puzzling to me. She gave a decent performance for what was required. And, believe it or not, having a Native American actress win would be a genuinely big deal and also a good thing. It's one thing to say that Stine (or any other actress) was better. But some seem to insinuate that she is talent-free fraud and the whole thing was cooked up by ANTIFA. Which is not the case.

The real crime is her role choices are limited for several reasons, not that she didn't when this specific award.

[quote] There’s something especially brutal about seeing the cast and crew of a really solid movie leave empty-handed. That was the case for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which came in with 10 nominations and left without a single win – not even for Lily Gladstone, who lost best actress to Emma Stone in what was arguably the night’s biggest upset.
[quote] Notoriously, two films have fared worse: “The Color Purple” and “The Turning Point,” each with 11 nominations and zero statues. But “Killers” grants Martin Scorsese a dubious honor. He is now the first director to have helmed two films that were nominated for ten awards but won none, a feat that he previously pulled off with “Gangs of New York.”

There was zero need for that and it came across as entitled and narcissistic instead of expressing gratitude for a rare opportunity for an essentially unknown actress.

R430 Gladstone did an adequate job. Nothing more. As beens said, all the other nominees in her category blew her out of the water. I don’t dislike Gladstone, but she took on this air of entitlement because she’s Native American, and she thought this would work in her favor, in a close race with Stone. So happy Emma won this.

Oppenheimer did everything an epic movie should do and justly won the top prize. I had no doubt that Christoper Nolan would win, he did an intelligent job as did Cillian Murphy. There really was no competition, in my opinion. I wish more movies could be as deserving.

I watched both of them at least 3 years after their time, and while good, they weren't ASTOUNDING and worth all the awards.
I've continued to do the same. I'll watch them in my own time and not because of hype or actors. I'll watch it and judge it if i want to and not because some academy thinks it's great or it's some part of a social movement.

I'm just gonna say about Gladstone, I'm glad she didn't win because it shows the Academy isn't solely performative. Emma Stone took on a weird and arguably unappealing role and knocked it out of the park. She deserved her Oscar. Gladstone's part was limited and probably wrong category. So the universe didn't pander. That's actually a really good thing in my view.
And here's the thing... maybe this edges Hollywood along a path where an actress like Lily Gladstone can play any part, not just Native American parts. I watch an Australian comedy called Fisk. Aboriginal Australians are cast throughout the series, in parts - not Aboriginal parts. It's refreshing. Noticed the same thing when I went through a phase of watching European cop procedurals on Netflix. The absolute majority of lead cop parts were played by women. And there was virtually no oh, it's so hard being a lady cop scripting. They were as tough and complex and multidimensional as any character, but they weren't mired in the exploration of the female experience. There was no self-consciousness about the casting. I think that's what Hollywood needs to move beyond. Instead of message pictures, the message in the picture can be delivered as easily through the casting as the scripting.

It had just the right amount of old school grandeur, some great bits (John Cena, Spielberg/Kate, even the normally John Mulaney hit), Jimmy had the clickbait line of the night (jail time) and there was even a *somewhat* surprise win (Emma).
I really enjoyed the entire broadcast.
I hate saying this, but it also seemed less "woke" or whatever that's called now. It just felt less forced or preachy. Both in the general tone and in the most of the speeches given.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
