How did this one-note sadsack manage to sustain a series for so long?
Peter Falk in Columbo

If the answer to that truly eludes you, I feel sorry for you.

All he did was mumble and wear a musty coat.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 10, 2024 11:30 PM |
How many fucking threads are you going to start about Colombo, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 10, 2024 11:40 PM |
I wasn't aware I'd started more than one!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 10, 2024 11:41 PM |
^ OP is a twenty something with an attitude
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 11, 2024 12:01 AM |
"Just one more thing."
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 25, 2025 3:19 AM |
2 oscar nominations
Columbo might not show it but he had it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 25, 2025 3:52 AM |
I don't think he ever referred to women as "broads". Which was unusual for that type of television character in the early 70's.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 25, 2025 4:25 AM |
He called someone a fart sucker in a movie once. Can't remember which.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 25, 2025 4:30 AM |
Columbo is based on the detective in "Crime and Punishment". Falk has Dostoevsky to thank.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 25, 2025 4:37 AM |
Columbo only kissed ONE character in the decades the show was on...a fat old whore played by Tyne Daly in the early 1990s.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 25, 2025 4:58 AM |
Did Mrs Colombo really exist? Or was he secretly living with a man?!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 25, 2025 5:11 AM |
R13. Yes, she was Kate Mulgrew. She was born with teeth...
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 25, 2025 5:39 AM |
[quote] Did Mrs Colombo really exist? Or was he secretly living with a man?!
Not only did she exist, she got her own TV show!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 25, 2025 6:08 AM |
Because he put out an excellent and entertaining TV show, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 26, 2025 12:14 AM |
"She was born with teeth..."
I don't get it.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 26, 2025 12:31 AM |
Peter Falk wasn’t one note, he was one-eyed. He worked with greats like Elaine May and Wim Wenders. He was part of John Cassavetes ensemble - going toe-to-toe with Gina Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence. Not to mention the Grandfather in A Princess Bride. The man did much more than Columbo, though that role undoubtedly brought him fame and even today is the inspiration for the Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne collaboration Poker Face.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 26, 2025 3:08 AM |
Columbo was very hairy down below.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 26, 2025 3:11 AM |
He had a sick tan!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 26, 2025 3:21 AM |
Because he was a charming, intelligent men who played games with the killers who thought they were smarter than them.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 26, 2025 3:30 AM |
were smarter than him*
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 26, 2025 3:31 AM |
R18 made several good points. The plot was simple enough for the average person to follow, guess who the culprit was. Yet it was not overly simpleton. I watched it as a kid with my family
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 26, 2025 3:34 AM |
He had a great looking hairy chest in that angel movie
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 26, 2025 4:47 AM |
Flashing back to those Sunday night shows. They alternated with Columbo, MacMillan and Wife and McCloud. Not a bad mix.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 26, 2025 4:57 AM |
Not bad but Banacek was crap
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 26, 2025 5:00 AM |
My grandfather SPANKED my sister for trying to imitate the theme music.

[quote] The plot was simple enough for the average person to follow, guess who the culprit was.
There was no guessing. The culprit was always revealed in the opening scenes. The fun was in watching Columbo figure it out.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 26, 2025 5:11 AM |
R15 what a disaster
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 26, 2025 5:12 AM |
Loved the episodes wih Anne Baxter and Janet Leigh
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 26, 2025 5:17 AM |
I'm watching an episode now set on a cruise ship. Looks better than a Love Boat. But those 1970s resort clothes are hideous.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 26, 2025 5:49 AM |
Any Speedos r31?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 26, 2025 5:52 AM |
It's my first Columbo. Does he always freeze before speaking?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 26, 2025 5:53 AM |
R27. Um, because Kate Mulgrew's recent autobiography was called "Born With Teeth." Try reading a book sometime, you illiterate sow!
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 26, 2025 6:01 AM |
Pretty much. He freezes and then... "One more thing..." it's part of the fun. On the better episodes he follows that "one more thing... " with a zinger of a question. And the guilty party struggles
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 26, 2025 6:02 AM |
R32 no but Robert Vaughn looks good in a swimsuit. He sniffed some amyl nitrate before falling into the pool.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 26, 2025 6:03 AM |
How did this one-note sadsack manage to sustain a series for so long?
He had good Guest Stars and Special Guest Stars.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 26, 2025 6:08 AM |
That's a decent episode.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 26, 2025 6:10 AM |
I have to laugh at how he smokes his cigar in the hospital sick bay. I was waiting for the nurse to say get that shit outta here.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 26, 2025 6:24 AM |
You were allowed to smoke almost everywhere then but thats pushing it
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 26, 2025 6:26 AM |
The prints they show currently aren't anywhere near to the visual sharpness of those that used to be shown on MEtv.
Elspeth is a redo of Columbo, but I still like it.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 26, 2025 7:42 AM |
Columbo reveals his theory that Robert Vaughn is the killer and Robert has no reaction. We know he did it because we saw him but you would think he might be a bit peeved about getting caught.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 26, 2025 7:53 AM |
[quote]He was part of John Cassavetes ensemble
Cassavetes was in one of the best Columbo episodes, with a young Blythe Danner.
I started watching the show for the first time this past spring and enjoyed it until I got to season 8 in the late 80s; I think I only watched 2 episodes. One of the best things about discovering this show in 2025 has been seeing the guest stars.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 31, 2025 10:39 PM |
The episode with Robert Vaughn as the killer was directed by Ben gazzara.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 31, 2025 10:42 PM |
The Columbo character had interesting quirks and charm, and the show was very well written.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 1, 2025 1:27 AM |
Vera Miles is pure aging diva bliss in her episode.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 1, 2025 6:19 AM |
R41 The episodes shown on Roku’s Live TV are visually high-grade. Also, there are various torrent sites where you can download the entire series in 1080p.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 1, 2025 8:17 AM |
It's okay, OP. You leave more of Columbo for us to love.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 1, 2025 8:46 AM |
He was mesmerising.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 1, 2025 10:17 AM |
I watched The Cheap Detective last night. It totally holds up!
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 1, 2025 11:01 AM |
I loved so many of them.
Q: Which episode did Columbo let the killer off, by taking the wrong person into custody at the end?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 1, 2025 12:35 PM |
R51, was it “Last Salute to the Commodore”?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 1, 2025 1:24 PM |
No. It was the one with Janet Leigh.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 1, 2025 1:30 PM |
Yes! The episode where she played an aging actress.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 1, 2025 1:32 PM |
[quote]The episode with Robert Vaughn as the killer was directed by Ben gazzara.
I was surprised to see Steven Spielberg's name on the screen as director of the first Jack Cassidy episode. This show had everything, and the sets were great.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 1, 2025 1:47 PM |
Well done R53
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 1, 2025 2:09 PM |
It's one of my favorites r51 /r56. Seen it multiple times.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 1, 2025 2:14 PM |

It’s a great episode, but Cassavetes’ attempts at conducting are pretty hilarious.
