Toni Collette

An actress who got her big international break in 1994 as the lead in Muriel's Wedding, which led to other box office hits such as Emma, The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine, Hereditary, and Knives Out, she has simply never stopped working.

She prefers independent films over Hollywood blockbusters, claiming independent films are more flexible, and focus on character and plot over CGI and "popcorn for the eyes." Independent film directors seek her out, claiming she is the best actress working today with her versatility and perfect communication solely through facial expressions.

Shy, witty, and having an insatiable appetite to learn, let's discuss the great Australian actress Toni Colette.

Love her in literally everything I've seen her in. I can't think of a single bad performance.

She IS Toni Collette!

On the eve of the Academy Awards, really OP? How dare you pull focus from every other movie star like that?

by Anonymousreply 3March 10, 2024 6:39 PM

I loved her in United States of Tara, but I understand why they cut the series when they did.

Same, R1. And because I love watching her, I want to believe the rumors about her being an awful person on set, are either greatly exaggerated, or untrue. But the work stands on its own.

Hasn't her weight gone up and down a lot over the years? In About a Boy, she looked really hefty, but the seemed to slim down.

by Anonymousreply 6March 10, 2024 6:43 PM

One of her best and most forgotten performances- and a completely Oscar caliber one- is in a film called Japanese Story.

If you have not seen it, see it.

And do NOT read any spoilers.

She was excellent and the film is a fine one.

R5 Not sure. I know she was happy on Knives Out.

Granted, she was working with Rian Johnson, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, and Christopher Plummer.

From what I have heard/read about, the set was fun and professional. Everyone got along.

I thought her costar from Muriel's Wedding was the difficult one.

by Anonymousreply 9March 10, 2024 6:48 PM

Toni Collette played Cordelia in a production of King Lear.

Eric Porter was known for having played Lear.

You’re terrible, Muriel!

(Phrases like that could get you banned around these parts).

by Anonymousreply 11March 10, 2024 6:57 PM

I hope she made bank for Mafia Mamma. That one was a slog

by Anonymousreply 12March 10, 2024 6:59 PM

R6 I loved About A Boy, and she was the perfect daft hippie in it.

by Anonymousreply 13March 10, 2024 6:59 PM

She should have won an Oscar for Hereditary.

by Anonymousreply 14March 10, 2024 7:00 PM

She was luminescent in Wild Party.

Sorry but she is box office poison for me. I hate that resting retard face she does.

by Anonymousreply 16March 10, 2024 7:03 PM

I loved Muriel's Wedding, despite a few clunky plot twists, and she really carried that movie beautifully.

by Anonymousreply 17March 10, 2024 7:27 PM

Loved her in The Staircase.

by Anonymousreply 18March 10, 2024 7:30 PM

She was the best one in The Hours.

by Anonymousreply 19March 10, 2024 7:31 PM

Hereditary creeped me out almost as much as The Exorcist.

by Anonymousreply 20March 10, 2024 7:33 PM

Really? I just wanted to slap her. So I did.

by Anonymousreply 24March 10, 2024 8:05 PM

And thanks to you, Mandy, she never came back to Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 25March 10, 2024 8:21 PM

I’ve never heard a word about her being difficult.

I value that she’s kept her real face and teeth.

Always outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 26March 10, 2024 8:26 PM

Not very pretty.

by Anonymousreply 27March 10, 2024 8:27 PM

R15, that’s one of the productions I truly regret missing.

I’ve listened to the cast album a thousand times.

It wasn't the show for me, r28, but I appreciated it and am glad I saw it.

[quote]Not very pretty

Well, she's an actress not a movie star

by Anonymousreply 30March 10, 2024 10:51 PM

I liked her in The Staircase

by Anonymousreply 31March 11, 2024 2:30 PM

I liked the owl attacking her.

by Anonymousreply 32March 11, 2024 2:32 PM

R32 damn, why?

by Anonymousreply 33March 25, 2024 4:00 PM

I just loved her song, "Do That To Me One More Time."

by Anonymousreply 34March 25, 2024 4:02 PM

Goodbye Porpoise Spit!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 35March 25, 2024 4:02 PM

In the 90s and 00s she was one of the most watchable actors but from the mid 00s the good quality indie roles dried up and it was mostly low quality output.
