Whose idea was it to put the microwave over the stove?

I'm not sure that's the best place for it, especially when you're boiling or steaming foods, but you see it in that location all the time.

by Anonymousreply 37March 11, 2024 2:26 AM

Most kitchens were designed without space for a microwave so it has to be squeezed in somewhere. You need to put a vent over the stove anyway. Might as well combine the vent with a microwave.

by Anonymousreply 1March 10, 2024 2:51 PM

I still have my microwave on the counter top next to the stove.

[quote] especially when you're boiling or steaming foods

The range hood is typically built in.

by Anonymousreply 3March 10, 2024 3:03 PM

I need all the counter space I can salvage in my tiny kitchen.

by Anonymousreply 4March 10, 2024 3:03 PM

It's a very stupid placement. I have a glass top stove and I'm surprised I haven't cracked it by dropping a heavy dish when taking it out of the microwave.

by Anonymousreply 5March 10, 2024 3:06 PM

Fancy people who build their microwaves into the cabinetry wind up having a hell of a time replacing them since they have to fit in a custom space.

by Anonymousreply 6March 10, 2024 3:07 PM

If you are going to say it’s a stupid location, please suggest a better one.

by Anonymousreply 7March 10, 2024 3:10 PM

R7 One Katie Britt's counter - she has enough empty space there to fit a dozen microwaves.

by Anonymousreply 8March 10, 2024 3:18 PM

[quote] I have a glass top stove

Ugh. Even worse. Horrible temperature control and scratches as soon as you look at it. God forbid you shake a pan.

by Anonymousreply 9March 10, 2024 3:43 PM

My microwave is on top of the fridge. Yeah, it’s a bit of a stretch. I need a step ladder to clean it but needed the counter space

The box for your Lean Cuisines, Ma.

by Anonymousreply 14March 10, 2024 5:17 PM

Oh. You mean the Radar Range?

by Anonymousreply 15March 10, 2024 5:18 PM

No doubt there are countless burns sustained yearly due to reaching overhead for scalding hot foods. This placement was a major kitchen design failure.

by Anonymousreply 16March 10, 2024 5:35 PM

Again—where else would you put it?

by Anonymousreply 17March 10, 2024 5:37 PM

Regardless of where you put your microwave, for safety it would be best at no higher than countertop level.

by Anonymousreply 18March 10, 2024 5:46 PM

The only practical way to have something at countertop level is to put it on a counter. Most people don’t have enough counter space.

by Anonymousreply 19March 10, 2024 5:49 PM

It's at eye-level so you can mindlessly watch the turntable go round.

by Anonymousreply 20March 10, 2024 6:18 PM

I just saw an ad on tv for a hood that slides in under the microwave. It can also be built in under the microwave.

by Anonymousreply 21March 10, 2024 6:23 PM

My microwave is over my range / stove. I like it there. Limited counter space in my tiny kitchen. The "vent" is a joke. It goes nowhere. However, even if there were no microwave (over the range), very few kitchen actually vent to the outside of the house, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 22March 10, 2024 6:28 PM

My microwave vents outside.

by Anonymousreply 23March 10, 2024 6:30 PM

My vent goes to the outside of house.

by Anonymousreply 24March 10, 2024 6:35 PM

My parents placed their first HUGE microwave in the kitchen wall back in the late 70s.

They kept making the microwave opening smaller over the years as new microwave ovens came and old microwave ovens went, but it always remained in the wall.

by Anonymousreply 25March 10, 2024 6:40 PM

The new drawer ones that go just under the counter are pretty great. Lower cabinets often have wasted space because they are inconvenient to access. Similarly fitting a lower cabinet with 3 big deep drawers is much more useful than just doors and shelves.

by Anonymousreply 26March 10, 2024 6:54 PM

Ours is under the counter and it's fine since we're short and childless. If we were tall or had mischievous toddlers, it might be a pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 27March 10, 2024 7:05 PM

My vent is useless because that steal comes out above the microwave.

by Anonymousreply 28March 10, 2024 7:10 PM

Meant "steam" not "steal" @ R28

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2024 7:11 PM

Teresa. It was Teresa that started it all.

by Anonymousreply 30March 10, 2024 7:11 PM

FOR COUNTER SPACE, dear.

by Anonymousreply 31March 10, 2024 8:00 PM

What do you do if the microwave oven conks out before the conventional oven, or vice versa? You have to replace the whole enchilada, right? That's one advantage to having them as separate appliances.

by Anonymousreply 32March 10, 2024 10:38 PM

For the person who called it a radar range, I love you and would blow you if you stopped by. 😆

by Anonymousreply 33March 10, 2024 10:40 PM

We have one and the venting is always horrible with otr microwaves, we had ours moved up and took the cabinet above it. We have a glass cook top and it is scratched too. The next range will be induction to solve that problem, with a mat on top to prevent scratches. I have to unfortunately cook at present on a GAS stove, in an RV due to storm damage, I hate the smell of combustion, yes the flame is blue, I can always tell if a house has a gas stove when i walk through the door, I can smell the combustion and makes me nervous.

Put the microwave on a counter. I bought those antique French sideboards with marble tops. Plentiful and cheap in my parts. Put misc appliances on them, also including computer screen and stereo speakers, and keep lots of stuff in the drawers.

by Anonymousreply 36March 11, 2024 2:14 AM

It’s better than the tv mounted over the fireplace!!!
