Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’ Accused of Plagiarism by ‘Luca’ Writer A Day Before The Oscars

Screenwriter Simon Stephenson (“Luca,” “Paddington 2”) has alleged that David Hemingson's script for Alexander Payne's "The Holdovers" plagiarizes "line-by-line" from Stephenson's own script, "Frisco."

Holy shit this would be an epic scandal if it were to win.

Fortunately I don’t think it will because Davine will win Supporting so they would like to give Screenplay to someone who won’t win a major Oscar, probably Past Lives (Huller is surging for Actress so that may work against Anatomy).

But it seems to me that the screenwriter, who was just a television writer who worked on Seth Macfarlane cartoons, was a patsy for this. He accepted the Producing credit (EXTREMELY unusual for a first screenplay) for his cooperation. But Payne would have masterminded the plagiarism.

A terrific downfall if true. It would even surpass Armie Hammer in recent Hollywood downfalls.

I'm surprised that they didn't bring up the suit that Sophia Stewart had with the Wachowskis regarding The Matrix, which sort of makes sense, since everything they did after that 1st movie was pretty crap.

by Anonymousreply 3March 9, 2024 5:49 PM

R2 no. Payne will walk away without a touch. He didn’t write it and they can’t prove he knew it was a plagiarized script. IF true.

by Anonymousreply 4March 9, 2024 5:53 PM

It’s being made public a day before the Oscars but has been going on since January. He sent an email to the WGA in January and it went nowhere. He then sent another in February and again, crickets. That’s why now he’s making it public.

by Anonymousreply 5March 9, 2024 5:58 PM

This seems to be more of a problem for Payne who was twice given the spec script to read.

by Anonymousreply 6March 9, 2024 6:04 PM

R6 again, reading a script someone claims to write. You just said it. How can I know your script is plagiarism if I never read the other persons script? Use your fucking brain.

by Anonymousreply 7March 9, 2024 6:05 PM

Supposedly Payne did read the FRISCO script. But can that be proven true? This is all a matter of hearsay.

by Anonymousreply 8March 9, 2024 6:08 PM

r7 You're the one who needs to use your brain and actually read the article. They have emails showing he read the Frisco script. And he then helped write the Holdovers script.

by Anonymousreply 9March 9, 2024 6:11 PM

R7 use “your fucking brain” and read the part of the story about the history of script making the rounds.

by Anonymousreply 10March 9, 2024 6:12 PM

I am a huge justice reform advocate and an opponent of the prison industry.

But people like r7 who don’t bother reading articles and then attack people who have read them really need to be incarcerated.

by Anonymousreply 11March 9, 2024 6:19 PM

r11 And to make it even worse, r7 is also OP of the thread. So they didn't even read the article they created a thread about. And the cunt tells others to use their brain?

Paddington 2 was so overrated.

by Anonymousreply 14March 9, 2024 6:30 PM

Reading R13, holy salted shitballs!

by Anonymousreply 15March 9, 2024 6:36 PM

This is so bad. How can Payne get away with this?

Its pretty much 97% the same script-

by Anonymousreply 16March 9, 2024 7:15 PM

R12, the OP is a massive idiot. Everyone on here knows it.

by Anonymousreply 17March 9, 2024 7:17 PM

R17 no. I’m not. Someone claiming something doesn’t make it fact. Him sending the script to Payne doesn’t mean Payne read it. And like someone who studied screenwriting said…

“I actually think if you start boiling down most 36 page screenplays down to a summarized bulleted list then you’d be able to make endless side by sides like this. I doubt anything comes of this.”

This will go nowhere.

by Anonymousreply 18March 9, 2024 7:20 PM

There is a reason the WGA ignored this twice. This is a non case and he’s trying to make it a case.

Well, um, thanks for asking us to read it even if you think it won’t go anywhere then?

by Anonymousreply 20March 9, 2024 7:25 PM

Since r18 needs to be spoon-fed:

[quote]Four months later, UTA’s Geoff Morley seemed to indicate that Payne had read “Frisco,” writing: “I spoke to Alexander Payne’s exec Jim Burke directly a while back and he said that Payne did like it but was not interested in prod or directing it.”

[quote]On Dec. 6, 2019, Woodward wrote to Stephenson and Seghatchian: “Sorry to say that Alexander has now read but says it is not quite what he is looking for.

by Anonymousreply 21March 9, 2024 7:43 PM

r19 Once again, dummy, if you actually read the article you linked to, you'd see the WGA aren't dealing with it because they won't be able to give Stephenson what he wants, and instead advised him to sue and recommended a law firm.

by Anonymousreply 22March 9, 2024 7:45 PM

If you read the actual scripts back to back, it’s absolutely laughable this is even going to court. All that’s there is the disaffected teenager with a rich absentee parent, which surely has NEVER been done before!

by Anonymousreply 23March 9, 2024 7:52 PM

To the “use your brain” idiot - Dumbvida Shitshoes no doubt, who tells everyone to get a brain despite being the trashiest, stupidest woman in creation, ALEXANDER PAYNE READ THE SCRIPT AND ULTIMATELY SAID HE DIDNT WANT TO MAKE IT.

Jackass.

by Anonymousreply 24March 9, 2024 7:53 PM

Folks here are so invested in this “disagreement” — it makes me wonder if employees/PR folks are work ing overtime to kill/promote this issue.

No dog in this fight.

by Anonymousreply 25March 9, 2024 8:07 PM

R23 this will go nowhere. It’s laughable and I’m glad many on social media who found and read the script are saying he’s psychotic to say it’s the same.

by Anonymousreply 26March 9, 2024 8:14 PM

Paddington 2 was hot garbage that made me want to serial kill everyone in it, especially the bear.

by Anonymousreply 27March 9, 2024 9:26 PM

R24 very perceptive. It is indeed Davida Rochelle.

by Anonymousreply 28March 9, 2024 9:31 PM

I just downloaded the Frisco script and will give it a read tonight.

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2024 1:52 AM

Shits fired!!!!

by Anonymousreply 30March 10, 2024 3:22 AM

The guy sounds like an extortionist.

by Anonymousreply 31March 10, 2024 5:14 AM

I'm 40 pages into the script for Frisco and I don't see one similarity that could be called plagiarism. If I hadn't heard about this case and was just handed the script to Frisco to read today, it would never occur to me to think- wow, this reminds me of The Holdovers.

It's also appallingly written.
