Groucho Marx - performed at Iowa State University in 1972. My brother was a student there, and I was in high school. My parents allowed me to drive to Ames and stay the weekend with my brother so we could go to this. I was a huge Groucho fan.

by Anonymousreply 8March 6, 2024 2:33 PM

How old is OP? I’m guessing 85.

by Anonymousreply 9March 6, 2024 2:35 PM

I've seen a number of bands and rock artists - the Go-Go's (several times), the B-52's (also several times and always as openers for the Go-Go's), Tina Turner, Tom Petty, Glenn Frey, OMD, Thompson Twins, 10,000 Maniacs, and U2 were among my larger scale concerts.

Smaller club concerts included Aimee Mann, Ben Folds Five, the Cardigans, Tori Amos......

I really haven't seen many cabaret shows. Comedians - Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho and Kathy. (I know, gay cliche)

by Anonymousreply 10March 6, 2024 2:39 PM

Perform what? Sex acts? What perverts!

by Anonymousreply 11March 6, 2024 2:46 PM

OP, how was Craig Ferguson? I've heard mixed reviews.

by Anonymousreply 12March 6, 2024 2:52 PM

MARY!

by Anonymousreply 13March 6, 2024 2:57 PM

PS I was never a megafan but Tina was the best concert (For the Break Every Rule tour, I think - 86?) Maximum energy from the second she took the stage. Had to leave at 10:30 to head back to the burbs and she was still going strong.

by Anonymousreply 14March 6, 2024 2:58 PM

Dave Brubeck, Gene Krupa, Bennie Goodman and so many others but I am so fucking old I forgot who those others were.

But they were really goodo

by Anonymousreply 15March 6, 2024 2:59 PM

I been to hundreds of concerts, recitals, opera performances and theater on Broadway and the West End.

I find this a silly question.

by Anonymousreply 16March 6, 2024 3:08 PM

R12 I found his set quite enjoyable. Especially when he talked about European nude beaches and the lack of shame.

Many rock shows. I'm pretty deaf now. My mother was right after all.

by Anonymousreply 46March 7, 2024 1:07 AM

The Beatles - Elton John and Neil Young - UCLA 1972. Tickets were $2.50. Elton was just beginning — jumping on the piano . Both concerts in Royce Hall - very small venue.

Youth is wasted on the young. And yes, I am old , but glad I had my youth before the world went off the charts in craziness .

by Anonymousreply 47March 7, 2024 1:08 AM

I'm surprised at how many of us have seen Neil Diamond! Neil rocks!

by Anonymousreply 48March 7, 2024 1:13 AM

Carpenters in 1979 or '80

A sixties concert in the mid 1980s with The Monkees (minus Mike Nesmith), The Grass Roots and Gary Puckett

Dionne Warwick (whose voice was really shaky until around her 4th number)

Peter Allen (who was beyond tireless)

Erasure, around the time of the Wild album (with Andy Bell also being beyond tireless - and delightfully beyond gay)

Stone Temple Pilots in 2011 (because I adored Scott Weiland)

Elaine Stritch at the Carlyle (only because a friend of mine was obsessed with her and wanted to see her)

Michael Feinstein (because another friend was obsessed with him)

Mary Wilson (who was, to say the least, not in great voice and who blanked out on the lyrics to several Supremes songs and needed the audience to help her out)

Comics:

Rodney Dangerfield

George Carlin

Suzanne Westenhoffer

Funny Gay Males

Bill Maher (way before his "woke" obsession)

Louis Black

Bill Burr

Kathy Griffin

Wanda Sykes

Sebastian Maniscalco

Plus dozens of celebrities I've seen in Broadway (and non-Broadway) shows

by Anonymousreply 57March 7, 2024 2:00 AM

R42 I wasn’t really a fan of Elvis. I was into the Beatles. But when Elvis stepped on stage in his sparkly spangled white jumpsuit (not fat yet) and sang the songs and did the karate moves it was awesome . He was The King.

by Anonymousreply 58March 7, 2024 2:09 AM

I saw Judy Garland. I was only 9. My grandfather took me. Over 100,000 people there.

Rock concerts I've seen: Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Costello. Lifehouse and Kris Allen, A few Jingle Balls and Kiss concerts (where I saw Maroon 5, a lot of pop acts, even Justin Bieber).

Blink 182 and Fall Out Boy + Panic At The Disco. Five Seconds Of Summer.

Saw Rosemary Clooney. Count Basie. Mitzi Gaynor. Keith Urban.

Saw Angela Lansbury in Gypsy, Marcel Marceau, Probably a lot of other stuff I'm forgetting here. Comedians: Richard Lewis, Lewis Black, Robert Kline. A lot of summer stock with old time stars.

What kind of an act did an 82-year-old Groucho perform for an audience of college students in 1972?

by Anonymousreply 60March 7, 2024 4:02 AM

Lana Del Rey in 2019. She was great live. Sean Lennon made a guest appearance.

by Anonymousreply 61March 7, 2024 4:03 AM

I saw Dietrich.

by Anonymousreply 62March 7, 2024 4:10 AM

One of my friends worked in a summer theater where his job was to pick up a bouquet of roses someone had tossed from the back of the theater (in the round) and bring them up to Marlene. It was staged - she paid for the flowers, and someone from the theater tossed them into the aisle. When he brought the flowers to her, Dietrich would make a big deal out of it, since he was a young kid (in high school) and give him a kiss on the cheek.

R69, I wish I had seen Quentin Crisp live! And how I left Maggie Smith and Barbara Cook off my list I'll never know -I plead the lateness of the hour... Leonard Nimoy

Donald Sutherland

Patrick Stewart

Ian McKellan

Clive Owen

by Anonymousreply 107April 10, 2024 12:22 PM

R 107 yet your list is still tedious.

Question Mark and the Mysterians.

In case you’ve forgotten: “96 Tears”

by Anonymousreply 111April 10, 2024 12:39 PM

[R110] - who knew he would expire so young? He was extremely high and his show was about two hours long culminating in him laying down on the moving stage at Celebrity Theater in PHX and saying that if it wasn’t for the necklace he was wearing he wouldn’t know he was upside down. As an aside - I was in Minneapolis for work last year and dropped a few Mitch lines on the locals who had no fucking clue who he is.

Where did you see Steve Martin? That’s quite a winner imo. My parents saw him in Vegas on the only vacation my father ever willingly took during the 70s!

by Anonymousreply 112April 10, 2024 12:39 PM

R91, my penultimate list.

Stage:

Patrick Stewart--Macbeth.

Ian McShane---The Homecoming (Raoul Esparza; Michael McKean, James Frain).

Ralph Fiennes---Hamlet (Francesca Annis).

Frank Langella---A Man For All Seasons.

Ricky Martin---Evita.

John Lithgow---All My Sons.

Jose Ferrer---Man of La Mancha.

Ben Vereen---Jesus Christ, Superstar.

R112---Steve Martin was in his early Bunny Ears and Arrow Through Head years when he did Stand-Up at the Allentown (PA) Fair, 1979. Same place I saw Johnny Carson.

And now I will see SM with Martin Short soon!

And BTW---I do not need a receipt for a dough-nut! 😉

Aaaaand finally, the end of r91, r105, r113, etc.:

My Best For Last:

Ricky Martin---Totally obsessed! Slept on NYC streets for his TV appearances and M&Gs; drove to Montreal to see him lip-synch on a TV show; attended many concerts in NYC, NJ, and PA.

The Four Tops---Since 1967, Forest Hills Stadium! Countless times since, even met them (all OG) backstage. AND WILL SEE ON APRIL 27, with the lone OG Top, Duke Fakir! (Also with the Temptations and Otis Williams!)

The Chad Mitchell Trio---Cannot sufficiently express my love and adoration, particularly of Chad and his beautiful tenor voice. Loved since 1964; didn't get to see them until their reunion concerts in this century. I spoke at length with them in Ocean Grove, NJ, after their concert with Peter and Paul (the benefit was for an ill Mary).

But the ultimate highlight of all my previously posted shows was that I was invited to have dinner with the Trio after one concert, and sat next to Chad. Dream come true, I'm telling you.

by Anonymousreply 131April 10, 2024 6:58 PM

[quote]These lists are fantastic. I’m beyond jealous of Groucho (at any age) Redd Foxx Beastie Boys and the incomparable Charo.

I saw Redd in Vegas when he owed the government millions. Apparently they worked out a deal where he wouldn't go to jail if he kept working and paying back his taxes. The rumor was there was an IRS agent backstage at every performance. He didn't get a penny.

He took the stage drinking from a ceramic mug shaped like a giant tit. His first words were "I got this from Betty Ford" and it was ON for the next sixty minutes — sixty minutes exactly. He didn't so much finish as just stop, snarl "And pay yo' fuckin' taxes!" and stomp offstage.

by Anonymousreply 132April 10, 2024 7:38 PM

R132 According to his costar Demond Wilson, Redd Foxx was very irresponsible with his finances. Not only would he spend his income as fast as he was making it, he was willfully not paying his income taxes. I'm not sure how long he thought he could get away with that.

In about 1981 or 82, I had some friends who were members of professional dance troupe. The leader was Gay, and in his field he was a well regarded choreographer. He called me one late afternoon all excited because James Baldwin was in town and they were meeting him at the local 5 star hotel, (we only had one) in their posh dining room and why didn't I stop by. I was dumbfounded! I had to work late, and by the time I got there this large round table for 8 had about two dozen chairs pulled around it and there he was, holding court and smoking like a chimney. he was regaling them with stories and my friends waved me over, They introduced me, he smiled, (he was quite drunk, and he was a sloppy drunk.) waved dismissively and continued telling his stories THis was a tableful of Gay guys with James Baldwin. He ran a tab. I had one drink and after a decent interval I sort of disappeared. No one noticed I'd left. But it's a moment in time I will never forget. A few days later my friend called and said he'd looked for me since a few of them ended up in Jame's suite he laughed and said it was a very long night.

R121 Reminds me that I came home from work one afternoon and saw Chad Douglas "performing with" Leigh Erickson in their scene for Matt Sterling's "Giant Splash Shots II."

To make extra money, my landlord would occasionally rent his house out for for pron shoots. This activity didn't interfere with me, because I lived in the separate guest house and was typically at work when the filming was being done. But they were still shooting outside by the pool that day I came home, and in order to get to the guest house one had to walk around the outside pool area.

Mr. Sterling politely asked me if I could wait til they had a break in the scene they'd set up. So I said, "Yes," and just kind of milled about occasionally looking over at the live action on the pool deck. To make up for this "inconvenience" they asked me to the wrap party at the house a couple nights later where I got to "mingle with the stars" .. lol.

I saw Glen Campbell with Bananarama in the same concert.

Glen Campbell did a medley of all his hits and was using cue cards for the lyrics. This was in the '80s. I don't know if he was already suffering with Alzheimer's or if it was just all the cocaine and partying that caused him to lose track of the lyrics.

Neither Glen or Bananarama were memorable except for Glen's cue cards.

OMG. How can I forget the very first rock concert I ever attended. I was 11. I saw the Beatles. Yes. John, Paul, George and Ringo!!! I was a million miles away from them, and the camera flashes were going off like lightning, but I saw them! The screaming was unfuckingbelievable. My older sister was a beatle fanatic so my mother got us tickets. I still feel guilty all these years later for not showing Ma appreciation for doing that.

by Anonymousreply 162April 11, 2024 12:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 164April 11, 2024 3:40 PM

Greg Kihn made some really good music late 1970s- mid 1980s. I never got the chance to see him live though.

Someone upthread mentioned the Police and how it was a snooze. I saw the Police, too, at pretty much the height of their popularity. Boring!

by Anonymousreply 166April 11, 2024 4:26 PM

The most boring concert/performance I've ever seen was Whitney Houston.

Girl can't move, either.

by Anonymousreply 167April 11, 2024 5:09 PM

R166 I bet the Police playing at CBGBs in 1978 was anything but boring.

by Anonymousreply 168April 11, 2024 6:55 PM

Steve Allen. He was a huge guy, I never would have guessed.

by Anonymousreply 169April 11, 2024 7:21 PM

R168 R166 I saw The Police midway through the band's Outlandos d'Amour Tour at the Santa Monica Civic (May 1979). .. As I recall, they also played some songs that they'd already recorded for their upcoming Outlandos d'Amour album. They were one of the bands that local L.A. radio station KROQ played heavily at the time. and my memory of the concert has less to do with the band itself and more to do with the crowd on the floor being overly ecstatic throughout. .. Not sure I'd call them "boring," but when I think of truly memorable performances from all the bands I've seen over the decades, they're not on my list.

Some friends saw Bruno Mars and I couldn't go, but they said I missed one hell of a show because Bruno Mars is an awesome performer .

by Anonymousreply 171April 11, 2024 8:13 PM

The most exciting thing I remember from the Police concert that I saw was Andy Summers (guitarist) jumping straight up and down (doing the pogo (stick)) while playing guitar.

I didn't see Joan Fontaine perform, exactly - I saw her do a talk and a Q&A after a showing of Suspicion. Then I ended up behind her leaving the auditorium. She had on a wool suit, had a French twist hairdo, and was tiny.

Barbra Joan Streisand. And she was totally amazing. We were at an indoor arena. the stage was in the center and she had a black gown on trimmed in white, and there was a piano on the platform. I was stunned at how she was able to convey intimacy in front of thousands of people. She chatted, joked, and sang her heart out. I fell in love with her all over again. She was absolute perfection.

The Honey Bees

Ray Charles! We saw him in a club long years ago. Loved that show. He was a legend by then.

Thank you, r129/r130! I hope your sister got to meet Denzel afterwards!

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in "Private Lives"

by Anonymousreply 178April 12, 2024 4:47 AM

I saw Maggie Smith in Private Lives.

by Anonymousreply 179April 12, 2024 8:38 PM

R177 nope, never got to meet him. I wish. But in a way I'm glad. I have heard Denzel can be rude. I'd rather keep my idealized version ofh im that meet him and get my feelings hurt.

by Anonymousreply 180April 12, 2024 8:42 PM

Me, too, R178! I saw it at the Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles with my mom. I was only 16, but I appreciated what an EVENT it was for them to be reunited on-stage, especially for people my mom's age. Plus, I loved Noel Coward!

Mom had introduced me a couple years earlier, during a trip to London. We went to see "Hay Fever"...because she couldn't get tickets to the hot new musical about the singing cat-people in a garbage can. BWAH! And thank goodness! (I'd be subjected to it several years later). "Hay Fever" was hysterically funny, and it sent me on a whole Noel Coward/drawing-room comedy jag (which of course lead to Oscar Wilde). Before leaving London, she bought me a book with a few Coward plays -- including "Private Lives" -- to read on the flight(s) back to L.A.

The Stones

The Ramones with the Runaways

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Marcia Ball

The Scorpians

More that I've forgotten due to my misspent youth spent stoned. Haven't been to a big venue in years but do see locals sometimes at bars. Luther and the Healers put on a damn good show but I think Luther died.

by Anonymousreply 182April 12, 2024 9:21 PM

The last ones were Dwight Yoakum and Chris Isaak. Both of whom put on great shows despite not being a huge fan of either.

by Anonymousreply 183April 12, 2024 9:26 PM

R180, After Denzel's "Julius Caesar" (he was Brutus), the theater had those metal barriers set up and people lined up to meet, greet, and get a photo with (or of, in my case) Denzel---so I did! (No Selfie because I used only 35mm then, alas!) He was smiling and patient throughout!

R178 and r181, WTH was I thinking, to have missed Elizabeth and Richard?! I've ONLY lived according to (my) "Elizabeth Taylor Philosophy of Life"! E.g., "Would Elizabeth go camping? I think not! Thus, I shall not camp!" 😁 The Most Beautiful Actress with the Best-Voiced Actor. Sigh.

Here's one COMING SOON for me. Are y'all ready to ENVY?! I'm going to see the "ANCIENT ALIENS" Guys! Giorgio Tsoukalos, David Childress, William Henry, and Nick Pope!

If any of you were never fortunate enough to see Queen live, make a point to see Queen Nation if they are performing in your area. They are worth the time, really good band.

One of my favorite shows was Led Zeppelin back in about 1968. I guess I've seen at least a thousand acts. I've been a dedicated concert goer my entire life and haven't slowed down. I also loved seeing Sinatra, Stevie Nicks, and Sting perform. I recently saw Wanda Sykes and was surprisingly disappointed.

I am forever spoiled because of the first two live shows I ever saw was as a teenager in the mid 1970s in NY. Bruce Springsteen at the Bottom Line in 1975, and David Bowie at MSG in 1976. I saw hundreds of shows since then, and a handful were of that high caliber, but I also made a mental point of not seeing acts that I was not confident would perform good live music. I actually passed on seeing the Rolling Stones in 1981 because I saw two of their shows on TV and cable before that and they were actually pretty bad, Mick was constantly off-key and missing words, and Keith kept fucking up on guitar, they sounded like a bad Rolling Stones cover band. They were probably fucked up on drugs at the time.
