Has anyone else reached award show indifference yet?

I couldn't give a flying fuck about the Oscars and hope the whole lousy award industry collapses and is never heard from again.

Movies, TV, music, Broadway etc. are all product (and arguably have always been so). There was at least a hint of glamour in the bad old days. Now? You might as well give awards for best light bulb.

by Anonymousreply 153March 7, 2024 1:56 AM

Several years ago.

by Anonymousreply 1March 3, 2024 7:05 AM

My predictions!!!!

Shitty film about bomb wins everything.

Native American actress gets hurled pity vote.

Everyone looks like shit on the red carpet.

Rest of world forgets entire mess in a week.

by Anonymousreply 2March 3, 2024 7:06 AM

Yes, I don't care about them anymore. I just tune in for the in memoriams at this point.

by Anonymousreply 3March 3, 2024 7:11 AM

Yes, for at least ten years.

by Anonymousreply 4March 3, 2024 7:22 AM

G must be at this stage by now.

by Anonymousreply 5March 3, 2024 7:25 AM

Yet? I was always indifferent. Most people 40 and under couldn’t care less. Those 20 and under couldn’t even tell you what an Oscar is.

by Anonymousreply 6March 3, 2024 7:26 AM

R6 is right on the money too. My indifference has been a life long thing too

by Anonymousreply 7March 3, 2024 9:50 AM

What's Oscars!?

by Anonymousreply 8March 3, 2024 9:53 AM

Yeah...since the late 90s

by Anonymousreply 9March 3, 2024 10:15 AM

My gripe is how they affect the release schedule. There's either nothing at all of worth to see at the cinema or everything at the same time so I've either already seen everything or there's too much to fit in.

by Anonymousreply 10March 3, 2024 10:25 AM

I used to really enjoy watching The Academy Awards and the film reviews, predictions and the anticipation leading up to them. But over the last few years my interest began waning and now I've also reached total indifference. Not quite sure what exactly brought about the lack of interest but it was probably a combination of things such as nominating ten movies for Best Picture instead of five, I lost interest in going to movie theaters even before COVID, and the storylines of today's films just don't interest me anymore. I still love movies, just not contemporary filmmaking, at least for now.

Also...things have never been quite the same without Joan Rivers and Fashion Police.

by Anonymousreply 11March 3, 2024 10:39 AM

(meant to write, "the storylines of today's films just don't interest me", NOT "the storylines of today's films just don't interest me anymore".

by Anonymousreply 12March 3, 2024 10:43 AM

There’s no glamour anymore in Hollywood, no genuine movie stars anymore, nearly all the film legends are long dead and by the time the Oscars are awarded the winners are predetermined, thus no suspense.

by Anonymousreply 13March 3, 2024 10:49 AM

I just remembered...part of the waning may have begun after the telecast when Ellen hosted and she had a few of the actors (including Brad and Angelina) take a selfie with her on air, and when Jimmy Kimmel began hosting and incessantly referenced Matt Damon. It all just got too self-conscious and "too young" or something (even though they're older than me).

by Anonymousreply 14March 3, 2024 10:56 AM

I reached it ten years ago.

by Anonymousreply 15March 3, 2024 11:01 AM

Ages ago it was evident to me that the awards only rarely go the worthy nominees, and that much of the best work is not reflected in the nominations.

And in American films the choices have been shit for many years now. This article makes a reasonable case for 2007 being as "the last great year for American cinema.". Almost everything since has been a circle jerk rewarding the same vastly overrated actors miscast in third- or fourth-rate material.

R14, And when Kimmel had pizzas delivered to the audience.

by Anonymousreply 17March 3, 2024 11:07 AM

Totally and for many years in the past as well. Actually, this year i only wish The Zone of Interest wins. Am also curious on the winner for best actress but not very invested.

by Anonymousreply 18March 3, 2024 11:37 AM

Yes

by Anonymousreply 19March 3, 2024 11:50 AM

And the audience reminds me of Let's Make a Deal.

by Anonymousreply 20March 3, 2024 12:28 PM

Same OP. All of it is LUDICROUS. I stopped paying attention about 15 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 21March 3, 2024 12:45 PM

The awards themselves? A long time ago and for the reasons other posters have stated.

As marketing gimmicks go, which is what ALL awards are, I’m surprised they’ve lasted this long.

And Yet! Don’t t dare take away the pre-Oscars Red Carpet.

R11 is right about the absence of Joan Rivers and the post-telecast Fashion Police episode. Those two things are sorely missed.

The pre-telecast Red Carpet is not to be missed TV for me as well as posting on and reading the DL comments.

by Anonymousreply 22March 3, 2024 12:47 PM

Hell, R22 -- reading the DL comments is the best part!

That said, I DGAF about award shows, and haven't for many years. "Entertainment" these days sucks.

by Anonymousreply 24March 3, 2024 1:07 PM

The whole thing collapsed when that cunt collected Anne Bancroft's Oscar.

Cunt!

You’re so generous. More like 18 hours.

by Anonymousreply 27March 3, 2024 1:14 PM

The Oscars lost distinction when they moved the start time from 10:00 PM.

by Anonymousreply 28March 3, 2024 1:14 PM

We're still in the post-Covid doldrums. There's just not that much product to choose from this year. Lily Gladstone? Hunty, please...

by Anonymousreply 29March 3, 2024 1:19 PM

Social media is to blame. Everything feels cheap nowadays. I’m in my 20s and I used to care about the Oscar. I don’t remember the last one that left a good impression on me (Maybe when Halle Berry won?) Tiktok interviews, see-through clothing with no class, no movie stars, everyone is looking bloated or bald on the red carpet. The instagram face is out of control. They should wrap it up and only stream the winners list.

by Anonymousreply 30March 3, 2024 1:26 PM

I’m only watching to see RDJ win so the troll on DL who repeatedly insisted that he will “NEVER, EVER win” can have a meltdown. Actually, I am sure he will have nothing to say.

by Anonymousreply 31March 3, 2024 1:28 PM

Thanks for mentioning that "selfie", R14. That was really insulting, IMHO.

"Look at us! We're the cool kids!"

Yuck.

I think one of the things I now hate is having all of the "stars" sitting in the front row or the aisle seats right at the front. Add to my hate list is setting the stage so "winners" just walk right up to the stage. Or go up to assault the host.

One of my favorite old memories of watching the Oscars on TV was seeing Susan Hayward running down the aisle after her name was announced for "I want to live".

I think they should have a lottery among all nominees as to who gets to sit in the front row. The other nominees, should get aisle seats so they don't have to climb over a whole row of people, but grouping all the actor nominees in front - I hate that cool kid vibe.

One of the worst was having the tour group walk through. It was an insulting look to all the people in the group as well as any viewers.

No wonder the number of viewers has dropped so significantly.

They should also drop all the idiotic "snappy patter", just have the presenter come out, read the list, read the winner and step aside.

Below is the link to video to Susan Hayward's win. Presenting was Kim Novak and James Cagney. (Look how Cagney is dressed!. These days they show up in gym shoes.)

And listen to that list of nominees.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 32March 3, 2024 1:34 PM

Cagney is wearing white tie and tails.

by Anonymousreply 33March 3, 2024 1:37 PM

What a tough category for Hayward. All those classic performances.

by Anonymousreply 34March 3, 2024 1:43 PM

They've gotten boring. Celebrities dressed like slobs and no one insulting them, the same nominees and winners so there's no real competition or even suspense, and what the FUCK is this box office achievement bullshit?

The award shows are like the Greek system in college. No one gives a shit unless you're a member of it.

by Anonymousreply 35March 3, 2024 2:07 PM

They should just be live streamed at this point. Network tv is going to die with the boomers

by Anonymousreply 36March 3, 2024 2:21 PM

Not sure exactly why I stopped watching the Oscars. I think it was a couple of years of extremely boring, long shows, without any real entertainment. I remembered great opening numbers, songwriter tributes, things from the past that were fun. The show wasn't fun and relied on some very bad comedians as hosts for the entertainment.

Then when they moved the honorary awards off the main broadcast. That had been one of the few things I still liked. It also seemed to be a symbol of the shunning of Old Hollywood that had become obvious (with a few exceptions).

Also, minor thing I guess, but I couldn't believe they left Dorothy Malone - an actual Academy Award winner in a major category - out of the In Memoriam segment. Somebody pretty famous, who had gone on to play big leads, and star on a long-running, hugely popular TV series.

Then the whole racial quota thing. I don't believe in that for the arts. For education, yes.

Stuff like that.

by Anonymousreply 37March 3, 2024 2:34 PM

A long time ago.

But I do admit I love the drama and outrage over someone being snubbed or robbed or something being racist, sexist, etc...solely because I think the whole award show thing is total bullshit so its funny seeing everyone get worked up over something so meaningless.

by Anonymousreply 38March 3, 2024 2:42 PM

Basically what some of you are upset about is "why can't white people just have white people only stuff any more? With a select few acceptable, non-uppity, minorities thrown in."

by Anonymousreply 39March 3, 2024 2:46 PM

The awards and the show may be meaningless. To me, anyway, what isn't meaningless is people with talent or dedication who sometimes devote their lives to their craft (all the crafts in the industry, not just acting), and the fact that film is an important medium, or art form. And the industry is important. So when people are snubbed by their peers who are honoring other peers, in the most visible way - a worldwide broadcast, to me it's not *total* bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 40March 3, 2024 2:52 PM

R39 Who here is upset about that?

by Anonymousreply 41March 3, 2024 2:52 PM

I think r39 is referring to r37’s comment that racial quotas in arts awards may not be a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 42March 3, 2024 2:56 PM

R42 -- Okay, I'm R37 and R41. Characterizing what I said as "Why can't white people have white people stuff" is way off base. I don't want to be put on the defensive by someone deliberately misunderstanding what I say. I don't think you should force racial quotas on creativity. Or political views, or social norms. But that's just me.

by Anonymousreply 43March 3, 2024 3:02 PM

Haven’t seen an award show since Bob Hope made nasty jokes about Vietnam war protestors at the Oscars. Who needs that shit? Who wants t9 give those people awards? Especially nowadays when everyone and I mean *everyone* is a nepo baby.

by Anonymousreply 44March 3, 2024 3:08 PM

A friend of mine always hosted a group of us on the big night. We had ballots and opinions and our hopes rose and sank as the evening progressed. After she died I once tried spending the night in a good hotel and treating myself to room service delivery of their charcuterie plate.

There’s nothing more to be done. It’s over for me.

by Anonymousreply 45March 3, 2024 3:08 PM

It' used to be fun to watch, now everyone has to have a teary heartfelt speech about being a xxx and overcoming the hardships and odds to win.

by Anonymousreply 46March 3, 2024 3:23 PM

I haven't watched an awards show in 25 years.

by Anonymousreply 47March 3, 2024 3:24 PM

I lost interest about 20 years ago, for the same reasons many have listed above. I DVR the show just to get to the 'In Memoriam' segment, but even the past few years (on all awards shows) they screw that up, too.

by Anonymousreply 48March 3, 2024 3:27 PM

I haven't watched or cared about The Oscars since Brokeback Mountain lost Best Picture to that awful Crash movie.

Before that, I attended Oscar Parties and it was always a big deal in my life. Since then, it's a non-issue.

I occasionally have a background hope that a really amazing movie will get nominated or win, or a really amazing TV show will get nominated for an Emmy and win. Never cared about Tonys or Golden Globes to be honest, and still don't.

Like, I hope Nimona wins an Oscar. It's really a great movie and deserves it. But I'm not so invested that I'll pay much attention, it's just sort of a general "I hope the talent behind that gets the recognition it deserves" thing.

by Anonymousreply 49March 3, 2024 3:27 PM

I wish they would go back to saying "And the winner is..." One of the most publicized, most famous phrases in the entertainment world (at one time, anyway)...and they let Alan Carr turn it into the boring, "And the Oscar goes to..."

The person IS the winner of the Oscar, so I don't get it, anyway. And other awards shows followed suit.

by Anonymousreply 50March 3, 2024 3:30 PM

I rarely have seen more than a few of the nominated films these days, so I just don’t care.

by Anonymousreply 51March 3, 2024 3:34 PM

I’ve always loved The Oscars. Will Smith ruined it for me. If Jessica Chastain had charged the stage and clawed his eyes out I might still care. But she didn’t and I don’t.

by Anonymousreply 52March 3, 2024 3:51 PM

I know I'm in the minority here, but I would just love it if award shows did what they were supposed to - hand out awards. Cut out the pomp, circumstance, and bullshit. Cut out the live performances, honorary awards, pre-taped packages, and just get to the awards. One category immediately after another with brief speeches.

by Anonymousreply 53March 3, 2024 4:04 PM

There's too much useless chatter between presenters. It's a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 54March 3, 2024 4:09 PM

I get so pissed when I see a presenter walk on stage without an envelope. It means we're wasting time until the next award.

by Anonymousreply 55March 3, 2024 4:12 PM

[quote]They should just be live streamed at this point. Network tv is going to die with the boomers

Major network TV *is* dead and has been for years already. It's just that some at DL don't realize it yet.

The Oscars became bogged down by lousy musical numbers. Present awards and get it over with.

by Anonymousreply 58March 3, 2024 4:25 PM

Have felt this way for at least ten years. All awards dinners suck.

by Anonymousreply 59March 3, 2024 4:28 PM

The Academy Awards are now a joke. I stopped caring about 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 60March 3, 2024 4:35 PM

Will Smith didn't help. And the way the show didn't throw him out didn't help.

by Anonymousreply 61March 3, 2024 4:38 PM

They live in fear of his wife, I think.

by Anonymousreply 62March 3, 2024 4:38 PM

[quote]The Oscars became bogged down by lousy musical numbers. Present awards and get it over with.

Forty+ years ago the thing I hated about watching the Academy Awards wasn't the long acceptance speeches. They were never that long and I figured that was less an annoyance than the point of the thing. What I hated were the endless song-and-dance shit (that transmogrified under the Discontinuous Decade of Debbie Allen), the Shirley Bassey-esque blown-out interpretations of original scores - or worse, medleys of original scores. And the scripted banter between old fossils liker Bob Hope and whatever other hateful old crank was still kicking. Had the Academy Awards focused on showing clips and behind-the-scenes footage from the nominated films, it would have been great. But the producers always thought the public wanted some cheesy old fuck in a tux like Billy Crystal and lame jokes about the nearly dead.

by Anonymousreply 63March 3, 2024 4:40 PM

they sucked the whole time

by Anonymousreply 64March 3, 2024 4:45 PM

I think the last time I tuned in was when Anne Hathaway and James Franco hosted. I was never a dedicated watcher, but I do remember when there was genuine excitement about it. Nowadays that seems amazing. Excitement? For an awards show? Why? The internet has killed glamour and star power. No such thing anymore.

Occasionally it’s still kind of gratifying. I enjoyed seeing Bong Joon-Ho win best director. It was touching when he gave a shout out to Martin Scorcese.

by Anonymousreply 65March 3, 2024 5:10 PM

Every gay man becomes disillusioned by the Oscars about the time he hits high school. That's when you realize how meaningless they are and how fixed they are.

by Anonymousreply 66March 3, 2024 5:13 PM

I liked the musical numbers - when they were clever. Or the performers were first-rate. I liked the Judy Garland medley by P!nk, maybe? I like the old clips of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas (then the English broads the following year) doing "It's Great Not To Be Nominated". Good lyrics. The Oscars used to be produced by Arthur Freed. Then by Joe Pasternak. At least they knew how to produce entertainment, more than Gilbert Cates.

by Anonymousreply 67March 3, 2024 5:18 PM

I used to enjoy the pre-show with Siskel and Ebert in the 80s, They used to host 'If We Picked the Oscars' and would make valid arguments as to why a movie / actor should win, or ask why a movie / actor was snubbed. It led up to the Oscars itself which made it more exciting. Alas, they are both gone and no one took up the mantle - probably because movies have gone to shit since then.

by Anonymousreply 68March 3, 2024 5:20 PM

Yes as I don’t know most of the performers or the works. Also, it seems there is an awards show almost weekly.

by Anonymousreply 69March 3, 2024 5:22 PM

I used to watch religiously and really look forward to Oscar night and Barbara Walters but now I just watch the DL threads.

I loathe Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel so that ruined many years for me. Red carpets for every single event on the planet have taken the fun away from Oscar fashion because it’s no longer special and so have the 100 other awards that proceed Oscar night. We already know who will win.

But I’m also ancient in gay years so that could be some of it. I freely admit I don’t give a shit about people like Zendaya or whatever her name is and that floppy haired boy in Dune. They are not movie stars to me.

by Anonymousreply 70March 3, 2024 6:03 PM

Hell, I'd be fine with the academy just releasing the names of all the winners at a designated time. Winners could give their acceptance speeches on their social media.

by Anonymousreply 71March 3, 2024 6:31 PM

Red Carpet was fun with Joan Rivers 30 years ago. Then everyone had to do it and ruined it.

by Anonymousreply 72March 3, 2024 7:00 PM

My asshole is in the middle of my body to the back.

by Anonymousreply 73March 3, 2024 7:32 PM

Hold on while I get my shawl... Ok. I stopped watching probably 15-20 years ago. It was just so boring. The red carpet became a phonyfest circus. Back in the 70s-80s, the stars were better at playing their part. It was a night of glamour. It felt like a big deal. Now it all feels cheap and like a flash in the pan. There are either too many actors/actresses these days or maybe none stands out. Everyone only lasts a couple years and then they fade away. It just all feels tacky now.

by Anonymousreply 74March 3, 2024 7:44 PM

Stopped watching and caring about award shows 20 years ago, around the same time I quit going to movies twice a week. I love Jimmy Kimmel, but I can also watch his nightly monologue on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 75March 3, 2024 8:23 PM

Irrelevant award shows for old people programming, and entitled attendees.

by Anonymousreply 76March 3, 2024 8:39 PM

Whenever studios started to be run by lawyers and accountants.

I knew a guy in college, in my film class. Nice guy, good looking, but not a creative type, clueless about film. I had to help him with his papers. He ended up as a movie producer - this is not a joke. Produced a handful of well-known (if not particularly successful) films. I found this out only after Googling him one day. He only was a producer for about 5 or 6 years.

by Anonymousreply 77March 3, 2024 8:41 PM

Otoh I knew a couple of guys - gay couple - who had an in, and went to the Oscars every year. From far across the country. Spent a week in LA, usually. Now, honestly, I wouldn't mind doing that at all.

by Anonymousreply 78March 3, 2024 8:44 PM

At least a decade ago, though likely longer. I DO like knowing who wins the Costuming Tony, and Oscars in my two favorite categories: Costuming, & Score. I just look them up online, when I think about it after the fact. But beyond those three things...absolutely zero fucks.

by Anonymousreply 79March 3, 2024 8:49 PM

I stopped watching or caring when Pulp Fiction—a then-groundbreaking film—lost to that pile of dreck that is Forrest Gump.

by Anonymousreply 80March 3, 2024 9:04 PM

The film industry has lost so much of its allure. Far too many streaming options, weak stories and social media have drained actors of their charisma. The nail in the coffin is box office receipts, the reportage is so vulgar and painful. Fuck the Rich 🤑

by Anonymousreply 81March 3, 2024 9:37 PM

Jimmy Kimmel has never made me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 82March 3, 2024 9:42 PM

I posted this on another thread but the internet and social media killed the glamour and mystique. We see celebrities all the time now and we know too much about them. FFS Bradley Cooper just did an interview where he talked about talking to his daughter while he took a shit in his bathroom!

Everybody is overexposed and shares too much now.

Caring about entertainment awards is an endeavor for the immature and starstruck.

by Anonymousreply 89March 3, 2024 10:38 PM

The thing is a lot of this stuff is based on politics and ass kissing and not merit. So it taints it for me. If you don't believe me go read the exclusive voter ballots that they put out every year for the Oscars or Grammys. The voters sound like fucking retards. Most of them openly admit to not voting based on the actual merit of the art but on other factors such as how much they like the artist or if the film was a hit and other such nonsense. I know for a fact that some of them don't even watch or listen to all the movies/music in the categories. Not to mention the nominees sending gift baskets and tickets just to bribe voters.

It is hard for me to take the process seriously.

by Anonymousreply 90March 3, 2024 10:43 PM

Anything of note is played on the highlights the next morning. Done & dusted in 5 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 91March 3, 2024 10:47 PM

Well, I'd rather have some entertainment than just watch people reading off nominees and giving out awards.

by Anonymousreply 92March 3, 2024 10:52 PM

Hitchcock, who never won an Oscar.

Tom Hanks and Hilary Swank have two each.

by Anonymousreply 98March 3, 2024 11:14 PM

It's crazy that Hitchcock of all people never won an Oscar. One of the most important and influential filmmakers ever.

[quote]Or which old hag movie star has spent the last 10 years glad handing for an Oscar?

Hello there!

by Anonymousreply 108March 4, 2024 12:44 AM

That sounds fucking hilarious, r86, how did I miss that? Will have to look it up.

by Anonymousreply 109March 4, 2024 12:45 AM

It's pretty predictable these days to know exactly which and how many awards will go to black actors. It has to be the exact formula or else there will be endless speeches and social media posts about it!

by Anonymousreply 110March 4, 2024 12:47 AM

R84 You nailed it. Absolutely agree.

by Anonymousreply 111March 4, 2024 1:12 AM

Many of you are reminding me that it isn't that the movies, plays, music or stars were so different back in the day. It's just that pre internet and streaming, we didn't get to see the actors and bands any time our heart desired. We got to see bits and pieces on TV or in magazines. It was a big deal to see what Elizabeth Taylor looked like at the Oscars or what Cher wore. As a gayling, I lived for it.

by Anonymousreply 112March 4, 2024 1:17 AM

R22 I loved the fashion police. I don’t watch award shows anymore.

by Anonymousreply 113March 4, 2024 1:19 AM

[quote] I mean, why was it considered bad? I watched it briefly (FFed thru some of it). Seemed okay.

It’s one of those legendary bad performances than doesn’t live up to its heinous rep. I’m sure “Madame Web” will suffer the same fate.

by Anonymousreply 114March 4, 2024 1:20 AM

I always hear that Rob Lowe and Snow White was supposed to be the worst and most embarrassing Oscar number. At least it's always nice to see Ann Reinking and her incredible legs. She didn't sing very well in that performance, as I recall.

The worst part is that she said "against all the odds" and just kept doing it. The title song of the movie "Against All Odds," and she still couldn't care to get it right.

by Anonymousreply 115March 4, 2024 2:44 AM

I'm pretty sure that in the original, Phil Collins sang "...against the odds" several times. Maybe that's how she rehearsed it, then maybe they wanted her to sing "against all odds" and she messed it up and sang "Against all the odds" because she was nervous, or something

by Anonymousreply 116March 4, 2024 2:50 AM

[quote] I always hear that Rob Lowe and Snow White was supposed to be the worst and most embarrassing Oscar number.

It wasn't good.

by Anonymousreply 117March 4, 2024 2:50 AM

He sings "against the odds," then later, "against all odds". That's probably what she got messed up on.

For years I would get together with the same group, with a few extras depending on who was hosting, to do an Oscar night dinner. Pre social media or internet. We'd do nibbles and cocktails while we watch and snarked or shared gossip. It was fun. I remember the siskel and ebert pre show, then the red carpet and Barb Walters. It was something we looked forward to. Not anymore. Just don't give a fuck about any of that.

by Anonymousreply 119March 4, 2024 3:22 AM

At least Chastain didn't hug him like Bradley Cooper did r52.

If you watch her win you can see she he stands up for her and she sort of hesitates then just says thanks and passes him by.

I don't think the slap heard around the world helped

Yeah that's when the Oscars jumped the shark

by Anonymousreply 122March 4, 2024 3:36 AM

And they still kept him there, presented him with the Oscar and let him make a speech. He should have been arrested. Of course if it had been a white male star who hit Chris Rock, there would have been no mercy.

by Anonymousreply 123March 4, 2024 3:40 AM

Considering the assault that took place before this moment should never have happened and it showed how hypocritical Hollywood elites are. Why didn't the orchestra play him off as they dd for everyone else?

[quote]...And they still kept him there, presented him with the Oscar and let him make a speech.

They also gave him a standing ovation. That was an ugly, ugly display.

by Anonymousreply 125March 4, 2024 3:50 AM

(^.^) absolutely, and an insult to the victim Chris Rock

by Anonymousreply 126March 4, 2024 3:55 AM

I know - his speech went on for 5 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 127March 4, 2024 3:56 AM

They usually let the acting winners especially the lead ones go on for a long time (remember Julia Roberts telling the conductor to put his stick down,)

by Anonymousreply 128March 4, 2024 4:00 AM

I will watch the two main one for entertainment . I'll watch the Oscars and Grammys. Could care less about the Grammys and their 8 nominations per category. All the other I couldn't care to try to watch.

by Anonymousreply 129March 4, 2024 4:02 AM

care less about *emmys^

by Anonymousreply 130March 4, 2024 4:02 AM

[quote]Debbie Allen's shittastic "interpretive dance" numbers were always great for snarky jokes. Gil Cates produced the Oscars for years and for some reason Debbie Allen was a favorite of his. When Gil was gone from the Oscars, so was Debbie.

A friend of mine who was an entertainment journalist once interviewed Nathan Lane about his not performing "Hakuna Matata" with Ernie Sabella for the Oscarcast, and he said privately he was relieved he couldn't do it (I forget the technical reason why he didn't) "because I knew that Debbie Allen would have us looking like complete assholes!"

by Anonymousreply 131March 4, 2024 4:04 AM

Either not really, or I've always been indifferent.

I never took them seriously. They were (and still are if a bit less so) fun for the red carpet and the reactions and the DL threads; at times the performers and presenters. And every once in a while, an artists I like get awarded for projects that I know and like. If not, I don't really care. I've never been one to be annoyed that the "wrong" person won. I'm 51; so sometimes, especially with the Grammys, I don't know some of the nominees and performers. But, either I'll blow it off or simply Google and get a little background. So, I still watch for the most part (at least Grammys, Tonys, Oscars, Emmys, GGs), though if I have other plans that day, I'm not going to change them to watch the awards show. Then I'll just read about it and watch worthwhile clips.

by Anonymousreply 132March 4, 2024 4:05 AM

R128 I don't think that's true, as a rule. Not since Greer Garson.

by Anonymousreply 133March 4, 2024 4:29 AM

The Grammys hit such a nadir this year, with Jay Z chastising the industry on stage for not giving his wife - who has 30-something Grammys - the Grammy she (or he) wants the most.

Billionaires with the resources normal people can only dream of having scolding others because they don’t have enough golden statues to validate their egos.

It’s grotesque and disgusting.

No thsnks.

First time ever I'm going to miss the live broadcast. I'm going to see Chicago instead.

Couldn't care less because the dozens of other award shows have already given away the winners with 99% certainty.

by Anonymousreply 138March 4, 2024 6:24 AM

I only care about the fashion.

by Anonymousreply 139March 4, 2024 7:34 AM

Excuse me but that's KENNEDY CENTER HONOREE Debbie Allen to all of you!

by Anonymousreply 140March 5, 2024 12:03 AM

The older I get, the less I care about whatever is new. So award shows don't interest me at all anymore. Except for shows like the Kennedy Center Awards that are honoring people for for entire careers.

by Anonymousreply 141March 5, 2024 12:35 AM

R116, I don't think she was singing live except for the first part, when she wasn't dancing. It was recorded.

by Anonymousreply 142March 5, 2024 1:13 AM

I can't believe Debbie Allen got a Kennedy Center Honor. Her body of work hardly deserved one. There were so many other worthy people to give that to.

by Anonymousreply 143March 5, 2024 1:14 AM

I'm all in for the oscars every year.

by Anonymousreply 144March 5, 2024 1:28 AM

I hate watch snippets, until the cringe inducement becomes too much for me to handle and I blow my brains out.

Every year, same thing. This must be purgatory.

by Anonymousreply 145March 5, 2024 1:47 AM

I just watched the SAG awards on Netflix last night. Same old bullshit, but I'm glad Pedro Pascal won. Most of the dresses were horrid.

A big yawn fest.

by Anonymousreply 146March 5, 2024 2:29 AM

Brie WHO??????

by Anonymousreply 147March 5, 2024 2:33 AM

I'd never noticed how much Ellen's eyes and mischievous smile resemble a diabolical imp.
