Has anyone else reached award show indifference yet?
I couldn't give a flying fuck about the Oscars and hope the whole lousy award industry collapses and is never heard from again.
Movies, TV, music, Broadway etc. are all product (and arguably have always been so). There was at least a hint of glamour in the bad old days. Now? You might as well give awards for best light bulb.

I used to really enjoy watching The Academy Awards and the film reviews, predictions and the anticipation leading up to them. But over the last few years my interest began waning and now I've also reached total indifference. Not quite sure what exactly brought about the lack of interest but it was probably a combination of things such as nominating ten movies for Best Picture instead of five, I lost interest in going to movie theaters even before COVID, and the storylines of today's films just don't interest me anymore. I still love movies, just not contemporary filmmaking, at least for now.
Also...things have never been quite the same without Joan Rivers and Fashion Police.

There’s no glamour anymore in Hollywood, no genuine movie stars anymore, nearly all the film legends are long dead and by the time the Oscars are awarded the winners are predetermined, thus no suspense.

I just remembered...part of the waning may have begun after the telecast when Ellen hosted and she had a few of the actors (including Brad and Angelina) take a selfie with her on air, and when Jimmy Kimmel began hosting and incessantly referenced Matt Damon. It all just got too self-conscious and "too young" or something (even though they're older than me).

Ages ago it was evident to me that the awards only rarely go the worthy nominees, and that much of the best work is not reflected in the nominations.
And in American films the choices have been shit for many years now. This article makes a reasonable case for 2007 being as "the last great year for American cinema.". Almost everything since has been a circle jerk rewarding the same vastly overrated actors miscast in third- or fourth-rate material.

Tiktok interviews, see-through clothing with no class, no movie stars, everyone is looking bloated or bald on the red carpet. The instagram face is out of control. Thanks for mentioning that "selfie", R14. That was really insulting, IMHO.
"Look at us! We're the cool kids!"
Yuck.
I think one of the things I now hate is having all of the "stars" sitting in the front row or the aisle seats right at the front. Add to my hate list is setting the stage so "winners" just walk right up to the stage. Or go up to assault the host.
One of my favorite old memories of watching the Oscars on TV was seeing Susan Hayward running down the aisle after her name was announced for "I want to live".
I think they should have a lottery among all nominees as to who gets to sit in the front row. The other nominees, should get aisle seats so they don't have to climb over a whole row of people, but grouping all the actor nominees in front - I hate that cool kid vibe.
One of the worst was having the tour group walk through. It was an insulting look to all the people in the group as well as any viewers.
No wonder the number of viewers has dropped so significantly.
They should also drop all the idiotic "snappy patter", just have the presenter come out, read the list, read the winner and step aside.
Below is the link to video to Susan Hayward's win. Presenting was Kim Novak and James Cagney. (Look how Cagney is dressed!. These days they show up in gym shoes.)
And listen to that list of nominees.

Not sure exactly why I stopped watching the Oscars. I think it was a couple of years of extremely boring, long shows, without any real entertainment. I remembered great opening numbers, songwriter tributes, things from the past that were fun. The show wasn't fun and relied on some very bad comedians as hosts for the entertainment.
Then when they moved the honorary awards off the main broadcast. That had been one of the few things I still liked. It also seemed to be a symbol of the shunning of Old Hollywood that had become obvious (with a few exceptions).
Also, minor thing I guess, but I couldn't believe they left Dorothy Malone - an actual Academy Award winner in a major category - out of the In Memoriam segment. Somebody pretty famous, who had gone on to play big leads, and star on a long-running, hugely popular TV series.
Then the whole racial quota thing. I don't believe in that for the arts. For education, yes.
Stuff like that.

The awards and the show may be meaningless. To me, anyway, what isn't meaningless is people with talent or dedication who sometimes devote their lives to their craft (all the crafts in the industry, not just acting), and the fact that film is an important medium, or art form. And the industry is important. So when people are snubbed by their peers who are honoring other peers, in the most visible way - a worldwide broadcast, to me it's not *total* bullshit.

I haven't watched or cared about The Oscars since Brokeback Mountain lost Best Picture to that awful Crash movie.
Before that, I attended Oscar Parties and it was always a big deal in my life. Since then, it's a non-issue.
I occasionally have a background hope that a really amazing movie will get nominated or win, or a really amazing TV show will get nominated for an Emmy and win. Never cared about Tonys or Golden Globes to be honest, and still don't.
Like, I hope Nimona wins an Oscar. It's really a great movie and deserves it. But I'm not so invested that I'll pay much attention, it's just sort of a general "I hope the talent behind that gets the recognition it deserves" thing.

Forty+ years ago the thing I hated about watching the Academy Awards wasn't the long acceptance speeches. They were never that long and I figured that was less an annoyance than the point of the thing. What I hated were the endless song-and-dance shit (that transmogrified under the Discontinuous Decade of Debbie Allen), the Shirley Bassey-esque blown-out interpretations of original scores - or worse, medleys of original scores. And the scripted banter between old fossils liker Bob Hope and whatever other hateful old crank was still kicking. Had the Academy Awards focused on showing clips and behind-the-scenes footage from the nominated films, it would have been great. But the producers always thought the public wanted some cheesy old fuck in a tux like Billy Crystal and lame jokes about the nearly dead.

I liked the musical numbers - when they were clever. Or the performers were first-rate. I liked the Judy Garland medley by P!nk, maybe? I like the old clips of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas (then the English broads the following year) doing "It's Great Not To Be Nominated". Good lyrics. The Oscars used to be produced by Arthur Freed. Then by Joe Pasternak. At least they knew how to produce entertainment, more than Gilbert Cates.

I used to enjoy the pre-show with Siskel and Ebert in the 80s, They used to host 'If We Picked the Oscars' and would make valid arguments as to why a movie / actor should win, or ask why a movie / actor was snubbed. It led up to the Oscars itself which made it more exciting. Alas, they are both gone and no one took up the mantle - probably because movies have gone to shit since then.

I loathe Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel so that ruined many years for me. Red carpets for every single event on the planet have taken the fun away from Oscar fashion because it’s no longer special and so have the 100 other awards that proceed Oscar night. We already know who will win.

The thing is a lot of this stuff is based on politics and ass kissing and not merit. So it taints it for me. If you don't believe me go read the exclusive voter ballots that they put out every year for the Oscars or Grammys. The voters sound like fucking retards. Most of them openly admit to not voting based on the actual merit of the art but on other factors such as how much they like the artist or if the film was a hit and other such nonsense. I know for a fact that some of them don't even watch or listen to all the movies/music in the categories. Not to mention the nominees sending gift baskets and tickets just to bribe voters.

Or which old hag movie star has spent the last 10 years glad handing for an Oscar? Yuck. Hollywood was ruled by a sex offender with a rotted crotch for decades

Why was Ann Reinking's Against All Odds performance so bad?

I mean, why was it considered bad? I watched it briefly (FFed thru some of it). Seemed okay.

It's pretty predictable these days to know exactly which and how many awards will go to black actors. It has to be the exact formula or else there will be endless speeches and social media posts about it!

Many of you are reminding me that it isn't that the movies, plays, music or stars were so different back in the day. It's just that pre internet and streaming, we didn't get to see the actors and bands any time our heart desired. We got to see bits and pieces on TV or in magazines. It was a big deal to see what Elizabeth Taylor looked like at the Oscars or what Cher wore. As a gayling, I lived for it.

It’s one of those legendary bad performances than doesn’t live up to its heinous rep. I’m sure “Madame Web” will suffer the same fate.

I always hear that Rob Lowe and Snow White was supposed to be the worst and most embarrassing Oscar number. At least it's always nice to see Ann Reinking and her incredible legs. She didn't sing very well in that performance, as I recall.
The worst part is that she said "against all the odds" and just kept doing it. The title song of the movie "Against All Odds," and she still couldn't care to get it right.

I'm pretty sure that in the original, Phil Collins sang "...against the odds" several times. Maybe that's how she rehearsed it, then maybe they wanted her to sing "against all odds" and she messed it up and sang "Against all the odds" because she was nervous, or something

He sings "against the odds," then later, "against all odds". That's probably what she got messed up on.

For years I would get together with the same group, with a few extras depending on who was hosting, to do an Oscar night dinner. Pre social media or internet. We'd do nibbles and cocktails while we watch and snarked or shared gossip. It was fun. I remember the siskel and ebert pre show, then the red carpet and Barb Walters. It was something we looked forward to. Not anymore. Just don't give a fuck about any of that.

At least Chastain didn't hug him like Bradley Cooper did r52.

And they still kept him there, presented him with the Oscar and let him make a speech. He should have been arrested. Of course if it had been a white male star who hit Chris Rock, there would have been no mercy.

Considering the assault that took place before this moment should never have happened and it showed how hypocritical Hollywood elites are. Why didn't the orchestra play him off as they dd for everyone else?

I will watch the two main one for entertainment . I'll watch the Oscars and Grammys. Could care less about the Grammys and their 8 nominations per category. All the other I couldn't care to try to watch.

[quote]Debbie Allen's shittastic "interpretive dance" numbers were always great for snarky jokes. Gil Cates produced the Oscars for years and for some reason Debbie Allen was a favorite of his. When Gil was gone from the Oscars, so was Debbie.
A friend of mine who was an entertainment journalist once interviewed Nathan Lane about his not performing "Hakuna Matata" with Ernie Sabella for the Oscarcast, and he said privately he was relieved he couldn't do it (I forget the technical reason why he didn't) "because I knew that Debbie Allen would have us looking like complete assholes!"

Either not really, or I've always been indifferent.
I never took them seriously. They were (and still are if a bit less so) fun for the red carpet and the reactions and the DL threads; at times the performers and presenters. And every once in a while, an artists I like get awarded for projects that I know and like. If not, I don't really care. I've never been one to be annoyed that the "wrong" person won. I'm 51; so sometimes, especially with the Grammys, I don't know some of the nominees and performers. But, either I'll blow it off or simply Google and get a little background. So, I still watch for the most part (at least Grammys, Tonys, Oscars, Emmys, GGs), though if I have other plans that day, I'm not going to change them to watch the awards show. Then I'll just read about it and watch worthwhile clips.

The Grammys hit such a nadir this year, with Jay Z chastising the industry on stage for not giving his wife - who has 30-something Grammys - the Grammy she (or he) wants the most.
