They said "abdominal surgery" - iirc it was a "planned" surgery. But 2 weeks in hospital afterwards? I'm stumped. And I think they announced the lengthy recovery before the surgery, so they knew what was up?

My rather gossipy GP mentioned this to me during my recent office visit. Unprompted by me he asked me what I thought was going on with the Princess of Wales (he referred to her as Kate Middleton). I said I didn't know, but that I did think the situation sounded a bit off. He told me 'Nobody's in the hospital for two weeks for abdominal surgery.'
FWIW my partner is a clinical psychologist and his guess is that Kate has an eating disorder, which is something that can require a prolonged hospital stay.

It is my belief that they done the old woman in.
. Why should she die of influenza when she’d come through diphtheria right enough the year before? Fairly blue with it, she was. They all thought she was dead, but my father, he kept ladling gin down her throat. Then she come to so soon, she bit the bowl off the spoon.
Now what call would a woman with that strength in her have to die of influenza? And what become of her new straw hat that should have come to me?
Somebody pinched it, and what I say is, them as pinched it, done her in.

Searched around the Internet and found this guess:
Aortic aneurism. 1) In spite of the word aorta, it is an abdominal surgery and depending on the location of the aneurism, might require major abdominal surgery. 2) The recovery time in hospital is about 2 weeks 3) Total recovery is 2-3 months
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 29, 2024 5:23 AM |
I agree with those who say she simply isn’t thin enough for an eating disorder to be the issue. She might have an eating disorder, but not severe enough to require her to disappear for months or for her hair to fall out.
Cancer seems unlikely only because they explicitly denied it.
Crohn’s disease requiring surgery and a colostomy bag still makes the most sense to me. Crohn’s can cause hair loss and she went from extensions to a full wig (at least some of the time) in September. There are a few photos of her pre-marriage before she went to full time extensions that show a lot of variation in her hairline and the fullness of her hair so it’s possible she has been dealing with issues for decades. The long term hair loss and colostomy bag (that probably isn’t the right term) might make her and her handlers especially motivated to maintain her privacy. The extended recovery, and her long-term extreme leanness also fit with a chronic bowel condition. Any of those things could also be due to other factors, but Crohn’s fits with all of them.
I would think that at her age the short to medium term prognosis after bowel surgery would have been pretty good. But it does seem like something it up. A photo or video might be considered invasive, but some sort of message from her along the lines of, “Thanks for all the well-wishes. Looking forward to thanking some of you in person when I can resume my schedule.” could have been released.
So now I’m thinking it’s a significant medical issue, plus something else. I don’t think they would invent abdominal surgery or lie outright about cancer, so I’m still thinking Crohn’s, but it’s Crohn’s plus divorce or mental health crisis or the surgery went OK (because they released her) but she simply isn’t healing or absorbing food adequately.
I doubt one of the kids his having an issue because I assume the press would have covered that. They are clearly accommodating the BRF wrt Kate’s privacy, but I don’t think they would fail to over if if one of the kids wasn’t in school.
Her sister has been on vacation rather publicly so I doubt there is significant risk of imminent death, but it does seem lien a serious situation.

[quote]He told me 'Nobody's in the hospital for two weeks for abdominal surgery.'
A clinical psychologist isn't the best person to weigh in on abdominal surgery. Some of us with Crohn's or ulcerative colitis (present company included) had stays of similar durations. It typically means you're unusually ill and experienced complications. None of this might apply to her situation but it's on the short list of possibilities.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 29, 2024 12:17 PM |
Might not matter to her if a colostomy bag is easy to hide. She may just not want to do it and, if all indications point to it being temporary, why should she? If this is the situation, she has been dealing with a significant health problem for years as well as a likely borderline eating disorder (just because you have a health reason for being thin doesn’t mean you don’t also have issues around food) and had three kids in the midst of it. Maybe she just wants a fucking break to rest and recover. If she’s been ill rather than a little lazy and “family focused” the whole equation changes.
Also, the reason I’m pretty confident that she has some hang ups about weight (I’m not trying to minimize EDs, but I also don’t think she has a full blown ED) is the way she dresses. She doesn’t show a lot of skin, but she does NOT like extra bulk. So that might complicate hiding it.
She also has to avoid coming across in a way that people with permanent bags would be offended by.
So, all in, it makes sense to be that she would just lay low for a few months. But I’d still expect something - a wave from a window or a car, a statement of thanks for get well wishes. It’s odd and worrisome, given how young her kids are.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 29, 2024 12:19 PM |

[quote]For those talking about complications - they announced in advance that she would have a lengthy stay. Maybe being overly careful but even so?
The original statement said "The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery." Ten days for a royal following something like colon removal (particularly via open surgery, rather than laparoscopic) wouldn't be unusual. Padding the estimate for breathing room if she wasn't discharged on time would've been good sense.
[quote]the person who made that comment was my GP, not my partner.
I wouldn't assign much weight to a GP's opinion of abdominal surgery, either. In 30 years of having telltale colectomy scars, I've lost count of how many non-GIs have cluelessly asked "What's that from?"
R57 makes some good points about body image issues and recovery. If she had extensive abdominal surgery, that packs a punch both physically and emotionally. A temporary retreat from public life is understandable, but to have not even given a cursory wave by now is disquieting.

For what it's worth, the National Enquirer says that Kate has ovarian cancer, Charles has pancreatic cancer with 6 months to live, and Camilla is secretly battling breast cancer. Back in the day, the Enquirer was usually pretty spot on, but these days I'm not so sure.
I do like the eating disorder theory, though. There's the issue of her taped-up fingers on her right hand. Then I saw another picture where her left hand is covering her right, obscuring those same 2 fingers. Then there's the control issue, first being controlled by her mother and then being controlled by William/the Royal family. Maybe she's not thin enough for hospitalization, but I don't think the powers that be would let her get to that point without intervening first. Maybe she went on a bulimia binge over Christmas.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 29, 2024 1:14 PM |
I'm an unapologetic, unabashed Kate Stan.
I find her paradoxically fascinating - her perfect, skilled boringness keeps me in suspense.
I have no idea what her medical issue is. I've enjoyed reading the informed speculation in this thread.
Being the shallow bitch I am, my only question is: If and when she recovers and resumes public appearances, will she be carrying 5 to 7 lbs more of body weight?
Here's my reason she isn't in public yet - Her wardrobe is being re-tailored and re-curated to accommodate some added body weight.
She's is in her 40s now. I don't care how fit you are, the female body metabolism slows down with the onset of menopause, and, just plain old aging.

Indeed, but I guess my point is she would be fearful that the adhesive of the colostomy bag could come unstuck (that happens, occasionally but rarely, if the patient didn’t make a good seal) and people could smell it. Look at what a perfect porcelain doll Kate presents herself as. She would never, ever, allow that to happen. She wouldn’t even want people to know. And she wears clothes tailored within an inch of their life. All those tight dresses have no give. (Though that would give further opportunity for shopping).
Diverticulitis and peritonitis are one of the few things that tick the boxes of taking several months of healing without being (at this point) life threatening nor debilitating. Just potentially embarrassing for someone with her image.
And she’d be so secretive about that.

One of the "royal biographers" talked a bit about Kate this morning (link below):
Tom Bower “...you’re not being told what the surgery was and, as I understand it, it was very serious. I won’t reveal what I have been told it was, but she is seriously ill. It is not fatal; she will recover, but it’s a long healing process and that’s why she has disappeared from view… we do have a crisis for the monarchy at the moment. The king is ill, probably more serious than we realize. The Princess of Wales who is the future for the monarchy and the most wonderful person and asset is seriously ill too. We have the constant problem of Harry and Meghan, the reappearance of Andrew is catastrophic, you know, it is a very very bad time for the monarchy, a bad time for Britain… I think it’s months rather than weeks – I think that Kate’s recovery will be much longer than they originally anticipated…"
Tom about Andrew leading the family to the funeral: "...the real problem is the only person who can tell him to behave properly and disappear is his brother the king and he’s unable or unwilling, clearly ill and not in a position to exert himself, so Andrew just literally boldly pushed himself to the front with his ex-wife – it was absolutely a sight not for sore eyes, it was horrible, and what should the queen and Princess Anne do - push Andrew physically away? I mean this is a man renowned for his self-importance and his appalling manners and lack of discretion… no sense of dignity at all, and all the wrongs he’s done, but this is the problem the men in gray suits I the palaces cannot tell Andrew what to do on an open occasion like that, they fail."

The William no-show wouldn’t have been so bad if Andrew hadn’t led the remaining BRF into the church. I know it was a “private” occasion, not a public one, but Anne and Sir Tim really needed to get out in front of that coterie.

She does present herself this way but with regard to a colostomy bag, l think most of us would be porcelain dolls. A poster upthread even said he thinks he'd rather die than deal with one. Think of it. It involves a very private bodily function that is gross and embarrassing if performed or discussed publicly, at least among polite, civil people
But she's in a position that if such a condition were publicly revealed, there'd be a danger of her becoming the butt (no pun intended) of public colorectal and shit jokes. It's not dignified, but you know it would happen. She doesn't need this added strain during recovery. Nobody would.

Assuming she does have a colostomy, which is my guess -
R105 it’s unfortunate that patients suffer the “indignity” of a stoma and it is considered “uncivil” to even dream of having one. I feel more sorry for the patients who don’t have the means to disappear from everyday life because they have a colostomy than I do Kate.
The brave thing to do would be to represent people with stomas by meeting with child patients and showing that you can work out and play sports. (In fact they’re encouraged to). She could do wonders in easing the stigma.
Royalty is all about image. I think William, Harry and Zara would possibly use the occasion for advocacy. But Kate is not that person, and as a married in, the image of control and perfection is the only control she has.
That and she’s not a hard worker and is probably thrilled to be hanging with her kids, unbothered, for 6 months.

Haha I fucking love it.
Andrew has been treated like absolute SHIT by his family, for the past few years.
Like a dog, being kicked around on the street.
So now that they're all incapacitated, I think it's hilarious that he's pushing his weight around. BECAUSE HE CAN.
Harry should do the same.
It's time for them to take back control of their own lives, without Charles or William telling them what to do .
William can't do SHIT about Andrew right now. He has neither the power, nor the authority to do anything to his Uncle.
This would be a perfect opportunity for Harry to assert himself, as well.
He should grab Meghan and the kids, and start parading all over London.
William won't do a goddamned thing, because he is preoccupied, and has way too many problems of his own.

She hasn’t been seen in two months. William keeps canceling appearances and clearing his calendar. There have been no earnest official statements from the RF, and the press have been giving the entire situation a complete bye.
With the king, the RF were forthcoming enough to publicly state first that his prostate had gone haywire and later that it was cancer.
With Megan, the tabloids reported every conceivable facet of her depression and efforts to get mental healthcare.
Unlike with Charles, the RF won’t disclose what is going on with Kate. Unlike with Megan, the press seems completely indifferent to whatever is ailing Kate.
Is it really surprising that people are starting to speculate wildly?

R69: The National Enquirer used to be spot on about the health problems of celebrities because they would pay out thousands of dollars to nurses and lab technicians in hospitals, assuring them no one would ever know the source. This is how the information that Anthony Perkins had AIDS was revealed, among many others. Whether that would work in the UK, I don’t know.
But a hysterectomy would certainly require a lengthy hospital stay for someone like her, as well as an extended recovery time, especially considering that when she does return to public life she will be expected to hit the ground running and resume a heavy schedule of appearances lest there be more talk.

[quote] Kate’s never hit the ground running unless she’s playing hockey in 4” heels, and she’s not had heavy schedule of anything since studying for her A levels.
The consensus seems to be that she’s had bowel surgery (obviously prostate cancer or a sextuplet pregnancy can’t be ruled out completely) , but who knows how debilitating the condition has been up until now. I think she’s been ill for a long time, based mostly on her hair but also on her thinness. The possibility that she’s been struggling with a pretty significant case of IBD or Crohn’s (not sure if those are distinct or overlap) casts her seemingly sparse schedule in a different light.
OTOH, she has always looked extremely fit, albeit thin. And her schedule is probably set up long in advance, without any way of knowing how badly a chronic condition might be flaring up in the future. If she’s been even moderately affected you’d think there would have been many occasions of her canceling last minute. And she did produce three healthy children. In retrospect, maybe the severe morning sickness story was a half-truth. Maybe she wasn’t necessarily vomiting, but having trouble absorbing nutrition.
I can’t think of a worse job for someone with a condition that causes diarrhea than parading in public under intense scrutiny. WTF would she have been thinking?
Is it possible she has cancelled appearances frequently in the past and the media has not covered it? The Daily Mail pretended her ridiculous wig was real last year, maybe they’ve been actively cooperating for a lot longer?

Long hospital stays are just not a thing anymore. Forget about cost/insurance (which doesn’t apply to the royals anyway), C-Diff is a huge problem today. No matter how clean, it’s extremely easy to transmit, and hospitals are a breeding ground. A friend was hospitalized for a stroke and got C-Diff, and this was in a very reputable hospital. It took months to cure it, and he must have tried antibiotics (at $450 a pop) at least 6 times. He was finally cured after a fecal transplant. He says the C-Diff was far, far worse than the stroke.

R170, lots of women keep their pregnancy secret in the first trimester, as it is the stage in which most miscarriages occur. It’s rather far-fetched, but if Kate was pregnant and had a health crisis at New Year, she/her doctors may have decided to keep the information secret to avoid the will-she, won’t-she press furore which would ensue if there was a chance she could lose the baby.
This would be an especially sensitive situation, since one of Kate’s nurses committed suicide after falling victims to a phone hoax during one of Kate’s previous pregnancies.

[quote] Anonymous Courtier Speaking With "Distinct Discomfort" Says Recent Royal Drama Is Not a Crisis "Yet"
It goes without saying that the royal family has had a pretty dramatic start to 2024 given King Charles' cancer diagnosis and Kate Middleton's major abdominal surgery and lengthy recovery. And now that Prince William has mysteriously pulled out of his godfather's memorial for "personal reasons," pretty much the entire internet is in a state of 👀.
As royal expert Richard Kay put it in the Daily Mail, "A king fighting cancer, a princess stricken by an unknown debilitating illness and a vanished prince with no explanation for his absence have contributed to a febrile and dangerously unsettled atmosphere."
According to Kay, "aides insist it is not a crisis," but apparently one anonymous "long-standing courtier" added "not yet" with "distinct discomfort," so...read into that how you will.
Kay also notes that royal officials typically "offer consoling words of reassurance" to the public when people spiral, but says their silence is adding to a "sense of apprehension that all is not well within the royal house."
Again, we don't know why Prince William skipped his godfather's memorial, but Kay confirms that "it is highly unusual for a Royal Family member to pull out of an official event at the last minute." That said, apparently Prince William "spoke to Constantine’s family to explain."
Just FYI, around the same time the palace announced Prince William was skipping the memorial, they said Kate Middleton "continues to be doing well," so...at least there's that?

[quote] Britain's embattled royals are making an awful situation worse
It's been more than two months since Kate, the Princess of Wales, was last seen in public, sparking wild conspiracy theories.
But for Britain's royal family, that may be the least of its problems.
Two family members have cancer. One just died. Meanwhile, Prince Andrew is back in the limelight, and Prince Harry's relationship with his brother remains uncertain.
These are just a handful of challenges the British royals face today. The royal commentator Jack Royston told Business Insider it was "possibly the worst start to the year" the family had experienced in decades.
And both Royston and Kristen Meinzer, a royal expert and podcast host, said things were probably to get worse unless a drastic change was made.
As King Charles III and Kate step back from duties, the monarchy is missing some of its key players. And with no leader in sight, Prince Andrew returned to the fold at a memorial service for Greece's King Constantine on Tuesday, sparking speculation over his future position within the monarchy.
It's a PR nightmare, experts say.
It was promptly followed by news that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer on February 5 following a hospital procedure for an enlarged prostate in January.
In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, a spokesperson for the monarch said that he was "positive about his treatment" and that he looked forward to "returning to full public duty as soon as possible."
The king's hospital stay in January took place at around the same Kate was being treated for a planned abdominal surgery.
On January 17, Kensington Palace announced that Kate would remain in hospital for between 10 and 14 days after the surgery before continuing her recovery at home. They added that she would unlikely return to public duties before Easter, which falls at the end of March.
While Charles showed the public he was doing well after his diagnosis, Kate has taken a different approach. As BI previously reported, she hasn't been seen in public since Christmas Day.
The royal's absence has sparked conspiracy theories and speculation about her whereabouts on social media.
Meinzer told BI it was unusual for Kate to stay out of the public eye for so long, especially as she'd been transparent about her health in the past.
When Kate was pregnant, she was open about her experience with hyperemesis gravidarum — a condition that causes severe sickness — and she took photos for the press outside the hospital after giving birth to all three of her children.
Prince William and Kate Middleton pose for photos after the birth of Prince Louis outside the Lindo Wing.Chris Jackson/ Getty Images "Charles' camp has been far more transparent than William and Kate's. Nobody is wondering about Charles because they followed the No. 1 rule of PR, which is to get ahead of the story," Meinzer said.
"Charles' statements haven't been 100% transparent, but transparent enough — using words like 'cancer' instead of 'abdominal procedure,'" she said, adding that the vague language around the princess' condition has only heightened speculation.
Royston said the palace's refusal to release a photo of Kate was a shift from its previous strategy.
"The weird thing is, the palace could make it all go away with one single photo of Kate, but they seem to not want to do that," Royston said.
Royston suggested the palace could release a new photo of Kate through one of the charities she supports, or alternatively, something more laid back — a selfie or a photo taken by William — could be released through the couple's social-media channels.
A Kensington Palace spokesperson told BI on Thursday that the princess was "doing well."
"As we have been clear since our initial statement in January, we shall not be providing a running commentary or providing daily updates," they said.

Shoddy liposuction seems totally unlikely. She was never fat, let alone pudgy enough for her to justify lipo to herself. Even if she did have lipo, she’s too important to get the type of strip-mall procedure like Kanye West’s probably mother had.
I have no idea what’s really going on, but it’s way more likely (relative to complications from liposuction) that she has some type of GI cancer, like stomach or bowel. Those cancers are affecting young people at frighteningly increasing rates.
It’s also possible that the “abdominal” aspect was a complete fabrication. It may be nervous breakdown, or rehab for eating disorder, or god knows what. Maybe she has chronic fatigue — we at DL know how debilitating that can be thanks to Dorothy Zbornak’s brave candor.
Wishing her the best but also begrudging the lack of transparency about the health of the future queen consort.

[quote] Cathartic Colon. Long-standing use of stimulant laxatives can result in the lower intestine (colon) becoming an inert tube incapable of peristalsis. Use of these stimulant laxatives damages one of the nerve layers of the intestine, causing the aperistalsis, which then creates a need for even greater amounts of stimulant laxatives. This condition is believed to resolve over time with discontinuation of the stimulant laxative use.
The above is from an eating disorder treatment site (not the link below), so they are very motivated to make laxative abuse sound dangerous. And this was the worst they could say about colon damage.
it sounds like it’s dangerous because of the fluid imbalances it causes, which can damage the kidneys. I certainly would that thought that laxative abuse could harm your colon permanently and it’s obviously unhealthy, but it doesn’t sound like it’s a big risk.

William needs Kate.
He doesn't get along with anyone right now, and with Kate out of the picture, he's all by himself.
He hates Camilla, he hates Andrew, and he has alienated Beatrice and Eugenie.
Kate was the only one by his side that he got along with, and could talk to, besides King Charles.
And with both of them out of the picture now, he has NO ONE.
If he wasn't such an asshole to everyone, he wouldn't be in this predicament.

I'm talking about public events, such as his Godfather's funeral service.
That's probably why he didn't attend, because he was friendly with no one else who attended, and he didn't have his wife or his father.

[quote] Kensington Palace, this is not how you convince the world Kate Middleton is alive and well
Kensington Palace broke its silence amid speculation on Kate Middleton's whereabouts.
But its response prompted more questions than answers.
Royal commentators told BI it's unusual for Kate not to share updates, even about her health.
Conspiracy theories are swirling online about where exactly the Princess of Wales might be.
Though it's standard for royals to take time off for health reasons, it isn't common for them to disappear from the public eye. Kate hasn't been photographed since Christmas Day.
From rumors about Kate and William's relationship to suggestions that the princess' condition is worse than it seems, countless unfounded theories have surfaced on social media.
Though none of the rumors have been proven, the palace's determination to give as little information as possible has only heightened public speculation.
In a statement to multiple news outlets on Thursday, Kensington Palace said they'd been clear on Kate's recovery timeline and wouldn't provide regular updates on her condition.
"As we have been clear since our initial statement in January, we shall not be providing a running commentary or providing daily updates," it continued.
The statement could have been an opportunity to silence the rumors once and for all. But it only caused more confusion.
Kristen Meinzer, a royal commentator and podcast host, told BI that the mystery surrounding Kate's condition is unusual because she has been transparent about her health in the past.
For example, the public was informed when she dealt with hyperemesis gravidum — a condition that causes severe sickness — during her pregnancies. She also posed for photos outside the hospital after giving birth to all three of her children.
"The weird thing is, the palace could make it all go away with one single photo of Kate, but they seem to not want to do that," Jack Royston, a royal commentator and podcast host, told BI.
Kate's last public appearance was in December when she joined the royal family for their traditional Christmas Day service in Sandringham, Norfolk.
In a brief update, Kensington Palace said on January 17 that she'd undergone "planned abdominal surgery."
Then on January 29, the palace issued a statement saying Kate had returned home to Windsor to continue with her recovery.
"She is making good progress," the statement read.
For the most part, William has performed royal engagements in Kate's absence with the exception of one last-minute cancellation in February. He was supposed to give a reading at a memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece on Tuesday, but pulled out due to "personal reasons," The Telegraph reported.
Earlier in February, William made a rare solo public statement about the conflict in Gaza. The statement was signed with a "W" seal rather than the crown imagery featured on official statements from the Prince and Princess of Wales' office.
The royal family has historically been opaque about what goes on behind closed doors.
But in recent years, it's become more common for royals to open up about their health. For instance, King Charles swiftly informed the public when he was diagnosed with cancer and he also made a statement when he contracted Covid twice.
The late Princess Diana said she'd struggled with self-harm and bulimia, calling the eating disorder a "symptom of what was going on in her marriage" to then-Prince Charles.

I can understand why she doesn't want to give a photo update. If she's been that sick, she probably looks like shit. No makeup, the hair hasn't been colored and touched up in weeks, she's far from camera ready unless she wants to do an Instagram filter. I think she's in serious condition, but she won't die. That bitch has worked and scraped and put up with all this to be Queen and now with the endgame in sight, she's not going to let it go now.

[quote] Poor Waity Katie can't say the same.
That's just how the enlightened, aware, conscious-raising feminist activist Meghan Markle referred to Kate; by a sexist, cruel nickname the tabloids bestowed upon Kate.
You'd think the words "Waity Katie" would have never crossed Markle's feminist award-winning lips given what a feminist activist she is.
But they did, and there is no justifiable context for her doing so, and Markle did it on world-wide television.
In that one seemingly small moment, however, when Markle used that expression during the Oprah interview, it revealed a very big thing about Markle - There is artifice to her, hypocrisy to her.
To the contrary that Markle is a feminist.
If she truly was one, "Waity Katie" would have never crossed her lips, knowing its social brutality that was wielded in service of humiliating another woman.
So, if I don't want to hear a lecture on feminism from the likes of Markle, I have good reason.
Instead, Markle is one of those heterosexual women who, in a fit of insecurity and the need to compete and put down another woman, engaged in basic Mean Girl behavior, and I saw it for what it was.
So, go ahead, r216, continue to refer to Kate with those two words.
But it won't take away from the fact that when Markle used them, it revealed the phony game she's unconvincingly playing.

Regarding all the Crohn's/stoma speculation, I had Crohn's for many years and finally had my colon removed in 2000. It is a two-part process. The first operation is the illeostomy, where they remove your colon. Then, a fecal pouch is made out of excess bowel. After that operation, you must let the whole area heal for a few months. During this time, you have a stoma. Finally, they reconnect everything so you can then resume pooping like a (relatively) normal person. A few related points: I was not in the hospital more than a couple days for either operation. Secondly, it was NOT easy to conceal the stoma under clothes, all of which needed to be very loose. The ostomy bag tends to inflate like a balloon with gas exiting the body. Your body also makes weird, loud sounds. Thirdly, having experienced it, I concur with the person who said he would rather be dead than live with an ostomy bag. I found it miserable and like that damn bag was controlling my life. I was thrilled and relieved to be rid of it.

Yes, she did, r228.
Markle thought nobody would see through her that she said it in what was seemingly a sympathetic way, in the context of how cruel British tabloids can be.
She could have made that point without re-saying those two words.
She chose to say them reminding the world of them after they had faded because she wanted to sink the knife in.
Throughout my life the phrase “my jaw dropped” had only been a figure of speech. But when Markle said them my jaw actually dropped.
It was a very telling moment and it revealed so much about Markle.

[quote]It is a two-part process.
Sometimes three, depending on the circumstances. The easiest way to exceed a week in the hospital following one of those surgeries is to be horribly ill going into it, or having complications afterward. One of my colectomy hospitalizations was extended by five or six days due to a staph infection that necessitated a stint in the ICU. I was sent home with a PICC line for weeks of additional medication administered at odd hours.
If chemo's off the table, the colostomy bag theory is as good as any. And whatever the surgery was for, if it couldn't be done laparoscopically and she has a large, fresh scar (or several) on her abdomen, it's impossible to do a lot of what she normally does without grimacing or gasping in pain for weeks afterward. Even as a passenger in a car, her expression might betray something that tabloids would feast upon.

Having had a major abdominal surgery myself about 12 years ago, I suspect her long recover has a lot to do with her public position. What I mean is that I was able to go back to work after about 6 weeks, but I was in a lot of pain still, using chairs and walls as support when walking, often having spasms of pain where I'd cry out, couldn't sleep well, etc. I just worked in an office, so I got on with it. If I would have had to be camera ready and knowing my photos would be shown across the world, I would have needed the same amount of recovery time she is taking just to keep the wincing at bay. She's probably moving around her house quite well, but not yet ready for prime time.

[quote] Rumors Surrounding Prince William’s Relationship With Rose Hanbury Are at an All-Time High Amid Kate Middleton’s Recovery
If you haven’t been on the internet the past few weeks, then chances are you may not be aware of all the rumors surrounding Kate Middleton’s whereabouts. While the palace has said, and re-confirmed, that Kate wouldn’t be seen in the public eye until sometime around Easter while she’s recovering from her mystery abdominal surgery. People are convinced she’s missing or in a coma, and as if the rumors couldn’t be more out of control, people are bringing up Rose Hanbury in all of this.
When you take a peek at the royal side of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, many believe Kate’s absence is all due to Prince William’s alleged relationship with Hanbury.
One user said, “I think Kate Middleton served William divorce papers cause she’s over the cheating but did it as Charles found out he’s dying so the palace said, ‘Can’t have an unmarried King’ and now they’re doing EVERYTHING to make her stay but she’s refusing to participate in the charade now,” with many adding they think Hanbury will be in the picture.
Another X user said, “If they Princess Diana’d Kate to Camilla Rose Hanbury…,” and another user added, “’Here it is. Kate’s abdominal surgery is a get away cause William keeps getting on with Rose Hanbury.”
So, for those who don’t know, Hanbury and Kate were friends for years, and in 2019, the Sun published a piece saying the two had a falling out (which, according to Richard Kay, nearly left both getting legal action in response). Then, writers Giles Coren and Nicole Cliffe both claimed they knew about the alleged affair between William and Hanbury in 2019, per IBTimes.
William’s lawyers reportedly issued a legal warning, but no one in this story has publicly acknowledged the rumors. An insider from the royal family told The Daily Beast: “There has never been any enmity between Kate and Rose. The rumors were all a load of rubbish. The family are ancient allies of the Crown and they will be there.”
There has been no physical or tangible proof of an affair besides deleted tweets and hearsay. While Kate and Hanbury have allegedly reconnected after Charles III’s Coronation, the three have kept quiet about the situation, but the rumors are swirling once again at an all-time high amid Kate’s absence.

Abortions are like having a heavy period for a week or a bit more in some cases. On average, it's 3 days of recovery, at the most. the only way that would make sense is if the baby was shown to have deformities and she wanted the baby; then was devastated by those facts, had the abortion, and needed time to recover from the emotional after-effects. It's possible.
But I don't think that's what this is.

I didn’t want your son, William. I wouldn’t bring another one of your sons in this world. It was an abortion, William. It was a son; a son, and I had it killed ’cause this must all end. I know now that it’s over; I knew it then. There would be no way, William. No way you could forgive me. Not with this Windsor thing that’s been going on for a thousand years.

I think it will come out further down the line, that the same is true of Kate.
This is much too suspicious that someone who has been CONSTANTLY photographed since she started dating William over a decade ago - CONSTANTLY PHOTOGRAPHED, mind you - has all of a sudden not been seen or photographed for MONTHS.

[quote] Everything to Know About Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley
Rose Isn’t Her First Name
Her full legal name is Sarah Rose Cholmondeley (née Hanbury), but everyone calls her Rose.
Her Parents Are Very Creative
Her parents are named Timothy Hanbury and Emma Hanbury (née Longman). Her father works as a website designer, while her mother reportedly works as a fashion designer!
She Has a Sister Named Marina Hanbury
Rose Hanbury has a sister named Marina Hanbury, who was also briefly a model and married into the peerage back in 201 with Edward Lambton, 7th Earl of Durham.
She’s a Pisces
Marchioness Rose Hanbury (also known by her married name Rose Cholmondeley) was born on March 15th, 1984, making her a Pisces. Many Pisces are known for being sensitive, inquisitive, intelligent, and creative.
She Has a Prestigious Educational Background
For Rose’s education, she attended the extremely prestigious Stowe School throughout her formative years, and later attended The Open University in England. While it’s not public knowledge what degree she sought, many believe she pursued something in politics, due to her later career choices.
She Was a Model for Years
Before Rose was all about the firm, she was actually discovered at age 23 by the Storm Agency. (The agency Kate Moss was under!) She modeled for a few years, posing in campaigns for Miu Miu, Poplin London, a shoot for Love Magazine, and more.
She’s Dabbled in Politics
After modeling, Rose became a researcher for the Conservative Member of Parliament, Michael Gove, who was serving as the Shadow Education Secretary at the time.
She & Her Husband Have a 23-Year Age Gap
So who is Rose’s husband? His name is David Rocksavage, also known as David Cholmondeley, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley. The pair met back in 2003 at a party hosted at the Villa Cetinale, but didn’t start dating until 2006. In 2009, they announced their engagement in June, and the next day, they announced they were pregnant. And then the day after that, on June 24, they wed at Chelsea Town Hall. Nearly 14 years later, and the pair still seem so in love.
She is a Mother of Three
Rose and David share three children together: twins Earl of Rocksavage Alexander Hugh George and Lord Oliver Timothy George, born on Oct 12, 2009, and Lady Iris Marina Aline, born March 2016.
She Recently Worked in Interior Design
On May 4, 2022, Rose revealed she’s dabbled in design! On the shared Instagram page @houghton_hall, it was shown that Rose and Martina Mondadori collaborated with a popular interior design company called Cabana. They created a collection “inspired by the extraordinary interiors of this fine Palladian house,” and it seemed like a big hit!
She’s Worked Extensively With Charities
Along with being involved in politics and modeling, Rose has played a major hand in charity work. She continues to actively work in charitable organizations, with the most well-known one being East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). If that sounds familiar, it’s because Kate Middleton is a royal patron of that organization.
She Resides at Houghton Hall
Per their official website, Houghton Hall is currently the home of the Marquess of Cholmondeley and Rose Hanbury. It’s an incredibly lavish home, as you can tell from the pictures, and her husband is “a direct descendant of Sir Robert Walpole who built the hall in the 1720s.”
She Had an ‘Erotic, Exotic and Eccentric’ Upbringing
In Violet Naylor-Leyland’s book entitled Rare Birds True Style, she details the “erotic, exotic and eccentric” life of Hanbury’s upbringing. Hanbury told her a snippet of it, recalling, “Mum turned the basement into a nightclub for us, painting the whole place herself and hanging Moroccan lanterns and suzanis from the walls. It felt a bit like an opium den.”
She Would Host Themed Parties
In the same book entitled Rare Birds True Style, Hanbury held themed parties, including a food-themed one where she arrived in an outfit entitled “Catch of the Day.” For the look, she wore an octopus on her head and a fishnet look!

If Charles revealed exactly what cancer he has and Kate gave us an update on just what surgery she had, then that's when the crazy speculations and wild theories will really start flying. Every "expert" will be on TV declaring how long Charles has to live or explaining what might be happening to Kate's bowel movements. The tabloids will be publishing even more bullshit articles about what's "really" happening to them, how many times a month Charles has chemotherapy and how much of Kate's intestines were removed. The online "experts" will be posting about how their neighbour's granddad has the same thing Charles had and he was farting all the time so Charles must be farting all the time too. Or their ex's sister-in-law had the same operation as Kate and now has a colostomy bag so Kate must have one too. The tabloids and the online nutters will still be braying for even more details and feigning outrage at being denied them.
The best strategy is the one they're following now: state the bare essentials and just wait it out. Charles will eventually complete his treatment and Kate will be back soon and in the months and years to come the current faux tabloid/online screecher demand to know will be forgotten. If they want to talk more about their health issues once they are better, then that's up to them.

Someone's medical crisis that they'd like to keep private while enduring it is "mess"? And she owes gossipers details during her ordeal, otherwise she's creating drama? How, exactly, would knowledge of the gory details help the general public?
by Anonymous | reply 326 | March 4, 2024 6:37 AM |
A "right to know" what, r322? Just what Kate's abdominal surgery is? Exactly what type of cancer Charles has? Aside from medical privacy being legally defended in a democracy, how does it benefit me as a citizen to know the specific details of all that?
Yes, we have a parliamentary democracy in the UK. We have a government, a prime minister, opposition. If the prime minister or a government minister was ill and had to take time out, I still wouldn't care exactly what she/he had (a cancer diagnosis or abdominal surgery would suffice for me), but that would raise the question of whether he/she could do his/her job properly. In the case of Charles and Kate that doesn't matter so much as Charles is still able to perform official state duties, and if he couldn't then William, Anne and Edward and to an extent Camilla could stand in for him. Kate can take some time out from public appearances and everything will still be fine.
The hilarious thing is that something similar did just happen in the US and it was a big issue but all the Americans on DL played it down. Lloyd Austin, the Defense Secretary, basically disappeared for a few days at the beginning of the year and the president had no idea where he was or how to get in touch with him. Austin had ended up in hospital for over a week, with complications from cancer surgery, the diagnosis of which he hadn't even told the president about. Austin handed over some of his powers to his deputy while she was on a beach holiday over the Christmas/New Year period, so she had to perform some of the duties of Defense Secretary from a foreign country and perhaps without the right security clearance. Again, Austin hadn't even told her why he was delegating some powers to her. And Austin is still Secretary of Defense, despite having serious health issues that incapacitated him and after all his subterfuge. Joe Biden himself, despite being 81 and with very apparent memory loss, is refusing to have a cognitive test. Mitch McConnell, Senate minority leader, freezes in the middle of sentences. Dianne Feinstein, in her 90s and without the capacity to serve, clung on to her seat in Senate despite being unable to attend and with no prospect of her health being restored, and that had a real impact on Senate votes. If Ruth Bader Ginsburg, abortion activist, hadn't insisted on clinging on to her Supreme Court seat until her last breath perhaps Roe vs Wade wouldn't have been overturned.
Those are the kinds of health issues I'd be worried about as a citizen in a democracy, not why doesn't Kate post a selfie update.

I have not followed the Kate M drama more than just being aware that she is out of circulation with stomach surgery and it is somewhat serious. This is my theory, and it is one that I have personally experienced.
I have been through three laparotomies, and they were during a 4-5 month timeframe. Healing from a laparotomy is hellish. Healing from three successive ones is fucking insane hell bad. I had a stoma for 4 months. It's not the end of the world, you get used to having it and it beats dying. I was in the hospital for 3+ weeks, then another week later down the road and then another. I nearly died at one point due to going septic, Pain was no fun. I was given transfusions, blood cells, and healed with fentanyl and other opioids so it must have been bad. I've blocked the memory. If I was to guess, I think Kate maybe had raging diverticulitis. Maybe she experienced perforated bowels, went septic and had to be sectioned for the stoma. That takes 3-4 months to heal properly. Then no more stoma (if you're lucky) and you can start pooping from the preferred hole. The timing part, so far, makes the most sense to me. The idea that she may not be happy with sharing that she has a doo-doo bag doesn't surprise me. It means when people meet you they are eyeing your mid-section for a poopie bag bulge rather than looking you in the eyes. I get it.

R228 yes she did say “Waity Katy” in the context of the disgusting things the media says about female royals. I don’t know why some posters got their pantys in a bunch over Meghan pointing out the press’ bullshit against Kate. It was a supportive statement for the PoW.
You all acting like no one can bring that up are weird as hell. Kate knows the terms and I’m sure agreed with Meghan that it was bullshit.
The press also bring it up when discussing the treatment of royals so it’s very much not some unspoken statement in royal circles.
You guys need to stop acting like Kate is. 5 year old girl. She’s a grown woman that’s proven to handle her own. I’m sure hearing the term “Waity Katy” wasn’t a big deal, considering the context.

There is a difference between being resentful that more information isn’t being released about someone’s illness and being confused as to why they are working against themselves by not providing a little positive PR - a photo of Kate waving from a car window or even just a statement directly from her thanking people for their concern and well wishes.
she shouldn’t have to tell the world she has a poop bag (and maybe she doesn’t). But when she disappears completely for three months people are going to start to wonder if they are lying. Then confusion can start to turn into resentment and it seems like that’s what the media is trying to encourage now. They’ve played ball (I read all the trash and they were pretty circumspect and respectful in January) and now they are getting impatient.
I don’t think they’ve lied. But they should have given the press something midway to Easter. Not medical information, but something.

The original announcement said she wasn't expected to return to public duties until after Easter. I don't get why everyone is expecting to see her or hear from them before Easter.

Because the daily front-page gluts of Kate-pictures have so suddenly stopped that people naturally notice the contrast.
It's as though the press had a dependency on her images themselves, and miss her various smiling activities. The press would say that that the public loved such images, which is why they ran them so often. And of course the exposure underlined the importance of brand William and Kate, their popularity so vital to those who support monarchy.
The Royals and courtiers loving the attention Kate daily won but now annoyed at responses to her absence aren't entirely realistic. The appetite created and sustained naturally craves more. A sudden absence and silence implying serious ill-health can only provoke widespread speculation.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | March 4, 2024 11:29 AM |
What the fuck are you on about, r335? Kate never made daily public appearances, just as no member of the royal family makes daily public appearances. She's taking a few months out from public engagements to recover from surgery and get her health back and that's fine. Similarly, no one cares about the apparent non-tax payment of the Duchy of Lancaster because it pays for various services, including the monarch. It's even administered by a government minister. Attempts to claim that the monarchy is depriving us Brits of wealth will always fail because they are bullshit.

What would happen to the Royal Duchies if the monarchy were abolished? Would they revert to the state or would the Mountbattens keep them?

They get used to it. I went down under once, and aside from feeling a bit light in the loafers, I pretty much instantly forgot that I was upside down. They built all the buildings upside down you know. So you can’t really tell.
I’m not quite sure how they keep the water on the ground, though. I’ll have to look into that.

Saw a discussion on Twitter (I know I know) putting forth the theory that Kate died months ago. Since that time they found a reasonable body double who got extensive plastic surgery to make her an exact doppelganger (which is why there are no pictures) and is now recovering from those procedures but it's not going as they hoped.
God I love the internet sometimes.

According to Twitter, it's not a body double, it's just Pippa. Duh.
I remember when Saddam Hussein gave a speech at the beginning of the Iraq war and people said it must be a body double because he was wearing glasses. Cracked me up that people thought they'd managed to find a perfect doppelganger but hadn't been able to get contact lenses for him.

by Anonymous | reply 415 | March 4, 2024 11:54 PM |
R415 I'm sure the population posting on the DL is solely responsible for her need to be trotted out and shown to have a pulse. I didn't see any further mention of why she was in the hospital, so apologies if I'm behind.
I've a few notions, some already covered, but so far I haven't seen anyone calling it as an incontinence issue (not joking, a breeder frau friend went through this), she could be looking at a possible implant, the trial for it, beforehand and would involve catheters and another bag no one's trying to have to wear. But it was from her natural childbirths and then there was a uterine mesh situation in tandem, was months of hell for her. Then possibly a solids vs a liquid problem (covered at length above)
But, I don't think a long term treatment facility for women with eating disorders isn't out of the question. They'll keep patients for months. Half look like they're about to die, the other half, you wonder why they're there. But bulimia is VERY hard on the organs, and they take INSANE quantities of laxatives, I remember a patient sharing that in the hotel, the night before checking in, did several (if not a dozen, long time ago) boxes beforehand just to get rid of them. Although she doesn't seem to have the vomit-roulette hard-core bulimia creates (at any time, one will just spout like a geyser with no provocation. It becomes a reflexive response) which would take time to help. Although two months isn't much in that world of 'treatment'. But she looks more anorexic, so I'm thinking it was an 'elimination organ output problem '.
Women in the 50s weren't even supposedly 'using the bathroom', and that issue has had a huge impact on architectural elements in contemporary, luxury spaces. No way is it even reasonable to expect her to become the face of Uber-IBS.

It’s probably real. I’m glad she’s OK. She must be doing pretty week to be out. I doubt they’d risk it if she wasn’t up and walking around for at least a couple of hours a day. Even a well maintained car could get a flat or break down and create a situation where she has to be going from one vehicle to another.
I’m bored with this now. I think that without realizing it I was a little worried about kids so young losing their mom. The glimpse through a car window strategy worked!

R440, see the above article. Charles gets at least a 60% discount on Audis. The royals have an entire fleet of Audis. I'm sure the Middletons got in on the act and either get a 60% discount or more than likely charles gave them one of his cars to use. It might even be one of Kate's many cars. They also have a fleet of Range Rovers
Al of their vehicles are electric. I guess that is supposed to make up for all the private flights (by plane & helicopter) these eco warriors take all the time.

They're just taking the word of the palace and printing whatever the palace tells them to print.
And now Camilla is taking a vacation. She says she's been working too hard. She did 13 engagements in a month. (about 40 hours total) and feels that warrants a vacation and so she's leaving her cancer stricken husband and going on vacation to get some sun for a week.
And since she filled in an did 2 engagements for charles, and now they're giving her an extra honour. She's getting a medal for doing her job. Seriously.

The idea that everyone is up in arms over to know if she had a nervous breakdown, cancer, a hysterectomy, has a shit bag or anything else is almost frightening. I would only add to R456 that media has been told on pain of death enough about whatever ails her that they get it took time but is not all that shocking, so they're content to be in the loop without telling Joe Public. International publications wouldn't care if they're on the wrong side of the monarchy but British journalists, if the story is dull enough, might just bend.
A doctor friend of mine - who couldn't square the timeline in hospital - could only suggest it was some surgery to do with the reproductive organs and stressed that depending on the nature of it, abdominal surgery can take significant amount of time to recover form given the depth of muscle that has to be cut.

Why is it a surprise that someone who's been lazy her whole adult life is milking 'recuperation time' for all she can?
Doctors will often give advice around taking it easy after an operation, but usually give lengthy timescales to ensure there's no comeback on them. But most average people will think "yeah right, as if I can take that long off work". But you can guarantee Kate will have been thinking "result, I get to sit on my arse for months and it's medically sanctioned!"
And I'm not saying any of this as a Meghan fan, she's even lazier.

[quote] Prince William & Kate Middleton Are Reportedly in a PR Battle With King Charles III
It’s no secret that the royal family is in shambles right now. By taking one glance at social media last week, the #WhereIsKate hashtag dominated the feeds, and people who never pay attention to royal news were chiming in with their opinions. This PR debacle could have been avoided if the two warring palaces — King Charles III’s Buckingham Palace and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Kensington Palace — agreed on their communication style.
For decades, Queen Elizabeth II ruled by the mantra, “Never complain, never explain,” and that’s the style the Prince and Princess of Wales have adopted since her passing in 2022. They didn’t address their feud with Prince Harry after his jaw-dropping allegations in his memoir, Spare, and they kept things rather vague with Kate’s recent medical leave. Charles, on the other hand, has decided to rule with more transparency, talking about his enlarged prostate and his cancer diagnosis, even though the specifics remain private.
The problem is that these two communication approaches oppose each other and make for a mess of headlines like we saw last week. There has to be a happy medium where everyone is on the same page — and Charles and Kate’s request for privacy is still honored. “They need to be aligned in their approach,” a former palace aide told The Telegraph. “At the moment, one palace never explains, the other is always explaining.” With the Wales’ explaining very little, it has allowed for the internet rumors to take on a life of its own.
It’s at the point of a PR disaster and has become what the outlet described as a “true challenge for the monarchy.” Kate’s pals are exasperated by the calls for her to appear in public after false narratives about her being in a coma circulated. “Why should she? Truly, I don’t get it,” the source said. “In what other circumstance would a woman take sick leave after a major operation, and instead of being allowed to recover she’s supposed to pose for pictures?” It seems absurd that the public would need a “proof of life” snapshot while Kate is recovering from a serious abdominal surgery, but perhaps a thank-you statement from the Princess of Wales would quiet the crowd.
The king wants to make sure that his followers understand that he’s still visible while he’s undergoing treatment. “It’s important that not only do we say he’s performing those duties, but he’s seen to be performing those duties,” a member of his staff noted. That’s why the public continues to see behind-the-scenes photographs and videos of his work routine. Yet the messaging is still convoluted when the two palaces seem miles apart on how to handle dueling crises — and it’s not helping the optics of how a modernized royal family doesn’t seem to have a place after Queen Elizabeth’s passing.

[quote] And, part of the point of separate vacations by long-term couples is temporarily vacating from each other. Doesn't Camilla keep her own house?
They do live apart. And she was going on a vacation in the sun (somewhere warm) R479. She did have a vacation planned. Then she canceled it after all the complaints, "how could she go on vacation when her husband has cancer"? Even her best friend "royal reporters" were out and about, saying she "deserved to go on holiday because of ALL THE HARD WORK SHE'S DONE in the past month".
What a bunch of bullshit. She did one or two engagements that charles was supposed to do. Big deal. One was going to a memorial service. That lasted an hour. And that old bitch is getting a medal of honour for going to that memorial service. Jesus Christ, these people are the laziest, neediest assholes.
And R455, when Kensington Palace puts out a bunch of damned lies, people are owed an explanation. They are lying. Surgery, especially on a woman who up until 2 months ago was very healthy, do not take this long to recover from. They DO NOT. Hysterectomies do not take this long to recover from. She probably had some small growth's removed. And she left him while she was recovering. She was tired of his cheating. That's the real truth. They're separated. And she's doing what Diana did, took some time to herself.
Do you what would take this long to do? Figure out a divorce agreement for someone with a very complicated estate, like William. He's worth £1 billion pounds. It took quite a few months for Charles and Diana to come up with an agreement.

R539 She's quite enigmatic. With most of the other royals you can get a sense of what drives them, their passions, their good qualities and faults. But Kate always seems like you can never really get a read on her. The walls never come down. You read in the books that come out and in the interviews about the other royals and details about their personalities and what they're really like (e.g. they're angry, difficult, funny etc) but with Kate there is nothing. You barely even get anecdotes or stories about her. It's a bit odd that she is so famous and yet we know so little about her.

[quote] Kate Middleton’s name quietly removed from website that hinted at her return to royal duty post-surgery
Where in the world is the Princess of Wales?
The British Army’s website quietly removed Kate Middleton‘s name from the list of attendees for the Colonel’s Review Tuesday after it was speculated that the event would be one of her first appearances since her abdominal surgery.
On Tuesday, her office at Kensington Palace said they hadn’t been consulted about her appearance, per People.
Prior to the removal of her name, it was reported that the Princess of Wales, 42, would have been examining the Foot soldiers as the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards at the pre-Trooping the Colour event.
Following the inspection, the members will line the processional route along the Mall in London.
Trooping the Colour is a batch of ceremonial events that mark and celebrate the birthday of King Charles III — even though the monarch’s actual birthday is in November.
Middleton has been in attendance for all of the events since she married Prince William, 41, in 2011.
The Post reached out to Kensington Palace for comment.
Since undergoing a “successful” abdominal surgery on Jan. 17, Middleton has remained largely out of the limelight, opting to recover from her home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.
In her absence, several conspiracy theories have taken root.
“Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess’ recovery and we’d only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands,” her office told The Post last week, adding that she was “doing well.”
The mother of three was spotted on Monday for the first time since her surgery sitting in the passenger seat of a car with her mother, Carole Middleton, near Windsor Castle.
In the extremely grainy photos, the future queen can be seen attempting to blend in with dark sunglasses and a dark jacket.
Shortly after announcing Middleton’s surgery, palace officials stated that she’d be “unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”
“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” the initial statement said at the time. “Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share.”
The mysterious disappearance surrounding the princess comes as King Charles III continues to undergo treatment for an unspecified form of cancer, which was discovered when he underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate.
Amid the royal family’s ups and downs, Prince William’s spokesperson told People on Wednesday that “his focus is on his work and not on social media.”

Why wouldn't the monarchy be kept?
No other head of state is immune to illness so getting rid of them wouldn't eliminate that risk.
Some of you seem to forget the job isn't reality television or all engagements, plaque unveilings and soft diplomacy (although that's the main job of anyone who isn't sovereign.) But in addition to upending a thousand years of tradition and history, you'd be radically rewriting the constitution, with all the political and economic risks and complications that would entail. Would Scotland declare independence? Would Wales? What happens to Ireland? What does the uncertainty do the economy? To the markets? To NATO?
I guess I'd like to know the factual basis for "the case for whether or not we should keep the monarchy." What would it be replaced with? What are the implications? What is the timeline? Most importantly, why? Just because the Queen died? The minute she did, the Crown passed and the function of monarchy continued on, seamlessly except for restrictions on the ability of the King and Kate to mingle for a period of time.

It's no use, R550. A lot of this on-line anti-monarchy sentiment stems from low-education, low-income Meghan Markle fans who have mentally conjured up a competition between Kate and Meghan even though Meghan has been absent from the UK longer than she was ever there. To them, the monarchy should be abolished (and Kate along with it) because the monarchy rejected Meghan. It is as simple as that.
Even though Meghan has flamed out spectacularly in the US and become a laughingstock on this continent, in their deluded minds the UK press and the monarchy are secretly the cause of her failures - and not because she is a minimally talented former cable tv actress with little to offer and a shit attitude on top.

Why single them out?
Maybe this says more about my mistaken pre-suppositions, but when the august, elevated NY Times publishes a story about the Sussexes and allows comments, the Sussexes garner plenty of support, and, of course, calls to abolish the UK monarchy.
They get criticized, too,
I may be engaging in my own stereotypes, but you have to subscribe to the NY Times to comment. I doubt the NY Times is the go-to source for the low educated, low income Markle fans.
I dislike the Sussexes. I write this as someone who started out wanting to like them. I also think that when she was first introduced as Harry's girlfriend, there is no denying that SOME of the UK tabloid coverage contained more than a tinge of bigotry.
Then, in a breathtakingly risky move, they pushed all their chips in on that Oprah, went to Defcon 1, and insinuated bigotry on the part of Q E II's immediate family.
That worked. And I believe the Sussexes knew the power of that insinuation and decided the risk was worth it if they were to gain the "A List" position they saw for themselves.
It worked with some people because it reinforced already existing negative reactions to monarchy itself, with all of its negative effect with regard to colonialism and the treatment of women.
I too, believe that, while playing that card may have paid off in the short-term, ultimately it has backfired on them.

What I find incredibly fascinating is that there can't be just one thread about the BRF without the people who say they hate Harry and Meghan dragging them into the discussion. A discussion that is not about them. This was a thread about the Princess of Wales.
Harry and Meghan are over here in America, focusing on the Invictus Games and their various charities and trying to build a life with their children, yet that doesn't stop the UK Tabloids from writing about them every day and commenting on them. The monetization of Harry and Meghan Hate is real, and people have made millions by trashing them.
And you guys rehashing every bit of unproven tabloid gossip that was ever written them, serves no purpose. Every new rumor just fades away without any proof or backup, because there is none. People just move on to the next made up rumor. And those of you who keep going back to the Oprah well. Whether you agree with it or not, they needed that vehicle to get their side of the story out. In the same way that Harry used "Spare" to get his side of the story out. Because they were left with no other recourse other than to suffer in silence while others leaked stories about them to improve their position.
They left, they're over here, and yet that family is still a mess. If you truly wanted them to go away, you'd stop talking about them.

How is the family "a mess", r567?
by Anonymous | reply 568 | March 7, 2024 1:49 PM |
They get dragged in. R567, because some klan granny idiot shows up and invokes them. That's when the discussion stirs up again. Occasionally somebody takes the piss out of them because, let's be honest, they're kind of a joke. But 90% of their mentions is when they make the news for their latest own goal or one of their welfare case morons stomps in with juvenile gifs, splattering klan grannies everywhere. So let's at least assess the situation honestly. There's plenty of blame to go around, if mentioning the Sussexes offends you, but it's far from equally distributed.

R533, nobody just goes and gets their bowel's resectioned. They are usually very sick, for many years before the surgery.
Whatever is wrong with her, they aren't telling the truth.

[quote]Because they were left with no other recourse other than to suffer in silence while others leaked stories about them to improve their position.
It's this kind of revisionist bullshit that fires it up.
Like they're little innocents without their own army of PRs.
They are playing the game and a big part of the strategy is playing the media and the public, so they're fair game whether you're on their side or not.
My last reply to this one, who's adopted the tactic appearing reasonable while obviously being a hardcore stan. It's just a variation on the "why are you so obsessed with a woman you don't even know" through line.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | March 7, 2024 2:03 PM |
Mentioning Harry and Meghan does not offend me. But there are gazillion Harry and Meghan threads focused on them and how terrible they're supposed to be. Why can't you guys let Kate have one thread to herself?
by Anonymous | reply 572 | March 7, 2024 2:06 PM |
I think it's just the refusal to let the Megaloons run rampant without reply, R572. I don't believe the majority of references come from DLers, but from people who come here to stir shit. Human nature. I'd be happy never to hear that woman's name again, but if she's the topic of discussion, it's fun to size her up.

Low income?
You mean like Carole Goldsmith Middleton and her brother "Uncle Gary" Goldsmith, who grew up in Public Housing?
THAT kind of low income?
Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!

Speaking of low-income, low-education....
If you want to go there Klan Granny, then let's go there.
[quote] Carole Elizabeth Goldsmith was born on 31 January 1955 in Perivale, London, the daughter of Ronald (1931–2003) and Dorothy Goldsmith (née Harrison; 1935–2006); she is the older sister of IT recruitment multi-millionaire Gary Goldsmith. Her paternal family are descended from coal miners, and were described as working class. Her father was a builder, while her mother worked part-time in a jewellery store. Goldsmith spent her early years in a small house in Southall, attending the local state schools.
[quote] She initially left school aged 16, but soon returned and achieved four A Levels. Goldsmith originally planned on being a teacher, but her parents were unable to put her through college.

The royal family has had a lock on the press for years after Diana’s death and because QEII was in control but now we are witnessing the press turn on the RF by exploiting the mystery surrounding Kate’s medical condition and absence.
Harry and Megan are getting a short break from bad press and that shows they have a point in that the RF did not extend their protection to them initially at least in the same way other senior members are shielded.

A short break from bad press ...except for instance Haz's massive security lawsuit loss and all the lies it revealed. No, your racist daddy didn't refuse to give your white as snow black spawn worldwide security, Prince Karen, the govt decided that.
Waah waah waah

Speaking of bad press, let's talk about Uncle Gary in the Big Brother house...
by Anonymous | reply 578 | March 7, 2024 3:54 PM |
So what did Uncle Gary say?
by Anonymous | reply 580 | March 7, 2024 4:22 PM |
Kate and William have troublesome uncles in common.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | March 7, 2024 4:42 PM |
Didn't Meghan disown her diplomat uncle who helped her get an internship at the American embassy in Argentina when she was a student?
Meghan certainly didn't grow up low income. Her father paid for her to have a great private education when her mother disappeared from her life when she was a child.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | March 7, 2024 5:03 PM |
Gary went to Kate's wedding. Meghan's uncle didn't go to hers.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | March 7, 2024 5:45 PM |
R563 in the early days when the Sussexes left the RF and came to America, there was overwhelming support in the NYTimes comments because readers bought into the whole racism accusation. However after the Sussexes Netflix "documentary" and "Spare" public opinion among NYTimes readers did a 180.

R583, as I recall, no invitation was sent to the uncle. I assume you mean the respectable one, in the diplomatic corps.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | March 7, 2024 6:26 PM |
You are indeed correct, R585. It was reported he was not invited. IIRC, her only family member there was her mother.
by Anonymous | reply 586 | March 7, 2024 7:04 PM |
Doria left Meghan with her father?
by Anonymous | reply 587 | March 7, 2024 7:19 PM |
Meghan's uncle wasn't invited to Meghan's wedding, r583. Meghan didn't invite any of her relatives to her wedding, aside from her mother. No other relatives even from her mother's side.

r587:
[quote]Both parents contributed to raising Meghan and, at the age of 9, she started living full-time with her father as Ragland pursued a career.[22] He paid for Meghan's entire private education from preschool at Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse to Northwestern University as well as other living expenses.[23] In addition to his regular job, Markle spent time helping with lighting for plays and musicals at Immaculate Heart High School, which Meghan attended.[24]

Maybe Kate found out that William was cheating with the wife - of the guy who committed suicide. And Kate had a breakdown. And the guy was humiliated. (Then William did not attend his funeral.) Could it be that twisted?
by Anonymous | reply 590 | March 7, 2024 9:26 PM |
Or Will caught Kate with the guy and he shot them both, killing his cousin’s husband and injuring Kate.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | March 7, 2024 10:29 PM |
Yes that sounds completely plausible R590.
by Anonymous | reply 592 | March 7, 2024 10:36 PM |
R590, isn’t that William’s cousin? Oh well, never stopped the royals before.

r576 The claim the royal family had a lock on the press since Diana died and then that changed when the Queen died is total BS. They received lots of negative press in that long time period including Harrys dressing up as a Nazi, Harrys Las Vegas antics, Prince Andrew being forced to step down from his trade ambassador role in 2011 after bad press, Criticism of York sisters security costs, Criticism of Camilla being invited to the 10 year Diana memorial service in 2007, criticism of Anne for being abrupt and being charged over her dog attacking someone, criticism of Princess Michael of Kents antics and an insinuation she had an affair, criticism of Kate and Williams workload, criticism of Charles for writing letters to government ministers and that been taken to court by the press,, criticism over the Paul Burrell trial collasping etc etc etc etc

There’s a conference coming up in Austin Texas, the 38th edition of the annual SXSW Conference, which celebrates the convergence of technology, film, television, and music. One of the panels, “Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen”, includes feminist and champion of human rights and gender equity, New York Times bestselling author, and co-founder of The Archewell Foundation and Archewell Productions Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex.
By coincidence, Archiewell is sponsoring this panel.
Two other panelists for this are Katie Couric and Brooke Shields. Speakers on other topics have a bio listed on their page. Most are a paragraph, five lines at most. Neither Couric nor Shields have one. Megs’ runs a full page. She includes her high school! and lists every faux award, her college majors, and her #1 podcast. It concludes with her Prince husband and Prince son and Princess daughter. No one else mentioned spouses or kids.
