That would be a terrible move if he wants to run for president one day. Governors are in a stronger position because they don't have voting records on national issues. Voters prefer candidates from outside DC. That's why Beshear and Whitmer are such strong contenders for 2028.

Whoever replaces him will be even worse. That’s all Republicans do is get worse and worse. Soon there will be a Republican majority or minority leader who makes us look back fondly at Mitch McConnell.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 28, 2024 4:56 PM |
I wish Biden's statement (which will gush) would be more along the lines of backhands: Having served with Mitch McConnell in the Senate, I can testify he would do whatever it took to accomplish what he believed was right for America, even breaking ranks with other MAGA Republicans to call out Donald Trump. Mitch's impact on the country cannot be overstated and more than anyone the face of the modern Supreme Court is the result of his leadership in the Senate.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 28, 2024 5:00 PM |
I am not sure whoever comes next will be worse than McConnell, although they will undoubtedly be as bad. But McConnell had a kind of reptilian intelligence that not every mouthbreathing Republican thug can claim and a kind of imperviousness to risk. I suppose he figured when it ended, he had his wife's millions to fall back on so, as addicted to the drug of politics and fucking people over as he was, he knew losing everything wouldn't be uncomfortable. The rest of them probably dread going back to the Ford farm equipment dealerships.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 28, 2024 5:12 PM |
His replacement will be indeed worse but fortunately far less competent. Look at that moron they chose as the leader of the House.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 28, 2024 5:15 PM |
And whoever is in Senate leadership must know about all of the arcane rules that exist there to get legislation passed. I don't see a MAGAt dipshit having the skills or intelligence to sit down and figure all of that out.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 28, 2024 5:17 PM |
I think just the opposite is true, R2. I don’t see Democrats having a good chance of holding on to the Senate. And while I think Biden will win in November, McConnell’s stepping down - but not resigning - could be interpreted as his belief Trump will win … & there’s no chance he could continue to be Leader with Trump in the White House. The news may head off the pressure on McConnell to endorse Trump, whom he hasn’t spoken to since Dec. 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 28, 2024 5:18 PM |
He is stepping down after the election. If Trump loses, McConnell's successor will NOT be MAGA.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 28, 2024 7:14 PM |
Well, at least he’ll be able to spend his twilight years looking back on a life in which he took a lead on the things that mattered to him and having been a successful proponent of the things he believes in: a widely despised Senate soaked in dirty money; a GOP which recognizes the pursuit of power as the only objective which matters; a debased, disrespected illegitimate Supreme Court…
He must look down on the rubble he is leaving, and know that his work will not be undone in his lifetime.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 28, 2024 7:24 PM |
They'll have an open contest for the Leader position. And it'll be juicy.
All other GOP senate leadership positions (committee chairmanships and ranking member spots, whip, NRSC Chair, etc.) have term limits. You can only hold it for a few years before you get bounced. But the Leader position has no such limit. You can hold it for 20 years, as Mitch has nearly done.
Ricky Scott badly wants it, but the man is a prick with no friends.
John Thune, John Cornyn, and John Barrasso all want it, and one of the three will win.
Look for a dark horse like Deb Fischer or Joni Ernst (already in leadership) to maybe mount a run for whip, or play kingmaker by picking one of the three Johns.
Look for assholes like Vance and Blackburn to gum up the works with a stunt.
Look for Ted Cruz to leave town for a few weeks.

True, but also probably worse at the job. I don't like him at all, but Mitch McConnell was good at what he did. The next guy will probably be some floundering doofus who barely knows what end is up in the Senate, and that is a mixed blessing. There are times that McConnell was actually useful, cause unlike so many Republicans these days he's not crazy. But in general he was a big problem, precisely because he knew what he was doing. Most other Republicans in Washington are just straight up nutcases and clowns wandering around and hoping Jesus will tell them what to do.

Well who hasn't known that Moscow Mitch is ill and failing fast, R48? There's been speculation that he'll step down (or frankly, die) soon, and no one I talk to thought he'd be leader in the next Congress after the two on-camera seizures that no pundit wanted to call "seizures". I wouldn't call it "under wraps" so much as respect for/fear of the guy who wrecked the Senate, wrecked the Supreme Court, was a racist, and somehow despite good competitors who polled well, managed to always win Kentucky by at least a 20-point margin.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 3, 2024 7:10 PM |
I’ll have what R124 is on. First, there’s the thinking that a Democrat can win a national election in Kentucky. Then, there’s the belief a Senate “Super Majority” is in the offing in this or the next cycle. WTF?!? I wish it were otherwise, but the Democrats are wholly on defensive in Senate races this year. They will be exceedingly lucky to hold on to their Senate seats in Ohio & Montana. West Virginia is lost. The retirement of Debby Stabenow gives Michigan republicans a real chance in Michigan (depending on whom they nominate). And, although I still like the Democrats’s chances to retain retiring Ben Carson’s seat in Maryland, the entry of the popular Republican former governor Larry Hogan gives them as good if not better chance to flip a Democratic seat than any Democrat has to flip a Republican seat this cycle.

I wish, R127. I definitely believe we’re in the midst of a Great Realignment, but it works both ways. Once reliable Democratic voters have realigned into the Republican camp, while many former Republicans, including the OG Never Trumpers, are now Democratic voters. I think - I hope - the latter will eclipse the former, but it will still be close in November. We’re not seeing any evidence that Democrats can look forward to Senate majorities, let alone supermajorities, in the foreseeable future.

[QUOTE]The retirement of Debby Stabenow gives Michigan republicans a real chance in Michigan (depending on whom they nominate).
The Michigan state GOP committee is a mess and hasn't been doing much fundraising. I'm hopeful. And now that Trump’s got his claws fully into the RNC, the money is going to be siphoned for legal bills. I'm hopeful. Around this time in 2020 I was pretty depressed and anxious about the upcoming election.

I am requesting a s l o w. painful death for our friend Mitch. It is NOT too much to ask. I envision a rusty razor blade slowly skinning him as he hangs nude and upside down inside the halls of congress. Or maybe outside on a very frigid day.

He’s married to that little Asian tart? Why, he looks like Aunt Ida surprised in her bathrobe.

@r137, "I am requesting a s l o w. painful death for our friend Mitch. "
I think he's already about mid-cycle in the death spiral

Turtle manipulated rules essentially stealing two Supreme Court appointments. He railroaded through Trump judge nominees, and held-up an abundance of Obama nominees.
McConnell’s biggest impact has been on the federal judiciary. He failed to support either Trump impeachment. Had he done so, the country would be free of the corrupt Con Man running for office.

[quote] I never realized Mitch is missing so many teeth. He has no lower left bridge work in OP's preview picture. Elaine must have been overcome with sorrow about her daughter's death to remind him before he left the house that morning.
Whenever I watch the original THE COLOR PURPLE, when Celine’s father says, “Celie, you gots the ugliest smile this side of creation!”, it makes me think of McConnell. His smile really IS ugly.

Celie not Celine!

Mitch doesn't want to be in the minority, which is why he's stepping down as leader. The smart Republicans can see that they're about to lose bigly in November because of Trump/MAGA, abortion bans, and the rest of their extremist platform.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | March 4, 2024 6:39 PM |
Nah, R145, the smart republicans know that the House is likely lost, but the Senate looks very promising. West Virginia is theirs, and one of either Montana or (less likely) Ohio is more than doable.

Mitch has done his share of sneakiness and underhanded moves for decades.
His old guard GOP, which he led in the Senate, has evaporated or diminished to next to nothing.
Mitch’s party is all Trump-Putin now. Others are not welcomed.

Just the other day, Trump, by name, ruled Mitt Romney out of the party. Let's hope a good number of Romney's '12 voters take that seriously (if they haven't already left their former party).

Will Senator Lindsey Graham replace Mitch as leader? Lá Sènatrice is beloved by Senators, including plenty of Democrats. It will excite the media who sees her as their favorite to feature.
As to the public, Democrats dislike her, MAGAs detest her.
