Mitch McConnell to step down in November

…if he lives that long.

by Anonymousreply 170June 19, 2024 4:44 PM

Someone trip him as he leaves the Senate building.

by Anonymousreply 1February 28, 2024 4:32 PM

Fresh signs that they have less and less confidence that they'll flip the Senate and/or the White House in November, and get a majority.

by Anonymousreply 2February 28, 2024 4:34 PM

He turned 82 last week ? He looks much older.

by Anonymousreply 3February 28, 2024 4:35 PM

That’s a rough 82!

by Anonymousreply 4February 28, 2024 4:36 PM

Andy Beshear should run for the spot to position himself for a future presidential run.

by Anonymousreply 5February 28, 2024 4:36 PM

He's speaking live from the Floor.

Please freeze ... please freeze ... please

by Anonymousreply 6February 28, 2024 4:37 PM

I think Thune would be the best r but it doesn't sound like it will go to him.

by Anonymousreply 7February 28, 2024 4:38 PM

Toxic person. Spineless and no dignity. GARBAGE. I actually wish him pain and suffering.

by Anonymousreply 8February 28, 2024 4:38 PM

Evil piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 9February 28, 2024 4:38 PM

Probably a combo of poor health and what the GOP has become.

by Anonymousreply 10February 28, 2024 4:39 PM

Sue Collins (sitting behind him) should stand up and say she's stepping down, too. She's a waste in the GOP.

by Anonymousreply 11February 28, 2024 4:40 PM

Gee, he looks great...

by Anonymousreply 12February 28, 2024 4:41 PM

Turtle turtle 🐢

by Anonymousreply 13February 28, 2024 4:43 PM

The entire GOP should step down after what they've done to this once-great nation.

by Anonymousreply 14February 28, 2024 4:44 PM

He stresses his age so that MAGAts can compare him to Biden.

by Anonymousreply 15February 28, 2024 4:44 PM
Andy Beshear should run for the spot to position himself for a future presidential run.

That would be a terrible move if he wants to run for president one day. Governors are in a stronger position because they don't have voting records on national issues. Voters prefer candidates from outside DC. That's why Beshear and Whitmer are such strong contenders for 2028.

by Anonymousreply 16February 28, 2024 4:48 PM

Why is he waiting until November? He already looks like he died a couple of years ago.

by Anonymousreply 17February 28, 2024 4:50 PM

The tahm has come fo the Republin' Senate's fuhst lady leadah. If elected, Ah will not swoon.

by Anonymousreply 18February 28, 2024 4:52 PM

R5- that is a brilliant idea. Beshear’s proven that he can win statewide.

by Anonymousreply 19February 28, 2024 4:52 PM

I think he definitely sees the writing on the wall. If he were confident that Repukes were going to win the Senate, there’s no way he’d step down. Seriously, if age is such a factor, why stay on as a Senator?

by Anonymousreply 20February 28, 2024 4:52 PM

Mitch is taking time off to spend with his lovely wife Elaine Chao. Their sex life would've made Suzanne Somers and Alan Hamel blush!

by Anonymousreply 21February 28, 2024 4:54 PM

Whoever replaces him will be even worse. That’s all Republicans do is get worse and worse. Soon there will be a Republican majority or minority leader who makes us look back fondly at Mitch McConnell.

by Anonymousreply 22February 28, 2024 4:56 PM

I wish Biden's statement (which will gush) would be more along the lines of backhands: Having served with Mitch McConnell in the Senate, I can testify he would do whatever it took to accomplish what he believed was right for America, even breaking ranks with other MAGA Republicans to call out Donald Trump. Mitch's impact on the country cannot be overstated and more than anyone the face of the modern Supreme Court is the result of his leadership in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 23February 28, 2024 5:00 PM

I am not sure whoever comes next will be worse than McConnell, although they will undoubtedly be as bad. But McConnell had a kind of reptilian intelligence that not every mouthbreathing Republican thug can claim and a kind of imperviousness to risk. I suppose he figured when it ended, he had his wife's millions to fall back on so, as addicted to the drug of politics and fucking people over as he was, he knew losing everything wouldn't be uncomfortable. The rest of them probably dread going back to the Ford farm equipment dealerships.

by Anonymousreply 24February 28, 2024 5:03 PM

If he continues with the cocaine, this picture will be Chris Evans' future.

by Anonymousreply 25February 28, 2024 5:05 PM

Is closet case John Thune next in line for Senate GQP leadership or will one of the MAGAts like Ted Cruz take over?

by Anonymousreply 26February 28, 2024 5:07 PM

Hearing between the lines, I think Moscow Mitch just disclosed he is terminally ill.

Tick tock, tortoise. Tick tock.

by Anonymousreply 27February 28, 2024 5:09 PM

I believe he will be replaced by a MAGAT purist, a total Trumper. Scary times!!! They are trying to line everything up.

by Anonymousreply 28February 28, 2024 5:12 PM

His replacement will be indeed worse but fortunately far less competent. Look at that moron they chose as the leader of the House.

by Anonymousreply 29February 28, 2024 5:15 PM

And whoever is in Senate leadership must know about all of the arcane rules that exist there to get legislation passed. I don't see a MAGAt dipshit having the skills or intelligence to sit down and figure all of that out.

by Anonymousreply 30February 28, 2024 5:17 PM

I think just the opposite is true, R2. I don’t see Democrats having a good chance of holding on to the Senate. And while I think Biden will win in November, McConnell’s stepping down - but not resigning - could be interpreted as his belief Trump will win … & there’s no chance he could continue to be Leader with Trump in the White House. The news may head off the pressure on McConnell to endorse Trump, whom he hasn’t spoken to since Dec. 2020.

by Anonymousreply 31February 28, 2024 5:18 PM

He is stepping down after the election. If Trump loses, McConnell's successor will NOT be MAGA.

It isn't well known yet, but he is stepping down to star in the live action version of this superhero's comeback.

by Anonymousreply 33February 28, 2024 5:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 34February 28, 2024 6:30 PM

Kari Lake is gunning as his replacement. We cannot let this happen.

by Anonymousreply 35February 28, 2024 6:33 PM

R27 I thought the same thing. He's telling us he's sick without telling us.

by Anonymousreply 36February 28, 2024 6:47 PM

Well, well, well.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think this hateful old corpse is trying to get out in front of something coming down the pike this summer.

by Anonymousreply 37February 28, 2024 7:10 PM

They should just dump a pail of water on him when he's on the floor so we can watch him melt into nothingness. What a world, what a world.

by Anonymousreply 38February 28, 2024 7:14 PM

Well, at least he’ll be able to spend his twilight years looking back on a life in which he took a lead on the things that mattered to him and having been a successful proponent of the things he believes in: a widely despised Senate soaked in dirty money; a GOP which recognizes the pursuit of power as the only objective which matters; a debased, disrespected illegitimate Supreme Court…

He must look down on the rubble he is leaving, and know that his work will not be undone in his lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 39February 28, 2024 7:24 PM

They'll have an open contest for the Leader position. And it'll be juicy.

All other GOP senate leadership positions (committee chairmanships and ranking member spots, whip, NRSC Chair, etc.) have term limits. You can only hold it for a few years before you get bounced. But the Leader position has no such limit. You can hold it for 20 years, as Mitch has nearly done.

Ricky Scott badly wants it, but the man is a prick with no friends.

John Thune, John Cornyn, and John Barrasso all want it, and one of the three will win.

Look for a dark horse like Deb Fischer or Joni Ernst (already in leadership) to maybe mount a run for whip, or play kingmaker by picking one of the three Johns.

Look for assholes like Vance and Blackburn to gum up the works with a stunt.

Look for Ted Cruz to leave town for a few weeks.

by Anonymousreply 40February 28, 2024 7:26 PM

"Mitch, now that you're retiring are you going to let that freak flag fly?"
Whoever replaces him will be even worse. That’s all Republicans do is get worse and worse.

True, but also probably worse at the job. I don't like him at all, but Mitch McConnell was good at what he did. The next guy will probably be some floundering doofus who barely knows what end is up in the Senate, and that is a mixed blessing. There are times that McConnell was actually useful, cause unlike so many Republicans these days he's not crazy. But in general he was a big problem, precisely because he knew what he was doing. Most other Republicans in Washington are just straight up nutcases and clowns wandering around and hoping Jesus will tell them what to do.

by Anonymousreply 42February 28, 2024 7:41 PM

Knives out!

by Anonymousreply 43February 28, 2024 7:41 PM

I’m disappointed he’ll remain that long

by Anonymousreply 44February 28, 2024 7:42 PM

What about Queen of the Hardee's biscuit line, Joni Ernst? She could debut a new wig each week as Leader!

by Anonymousreply 45February 28, 2024 7:49 PM

He'll be up for reelection in 2026, I think this is a signal that he won't be running again.

by Anonymousreply 46February 28, 2024 8:06 PM

No one can be good as Leader as long as Trump’s pulling the strings.

by Anonymousreply 47February 28, 2024 8:06 PM

So many reporters on cable TV asking how this news never leaked out before this afternoon ? The timing surprised everyone, they're saying. How could his team keep this under wraps for so long ?

by Anonymousreply 48February 28, 2024 8:09 PM

God damned old cunt! Die!

by Anonymousreply 49February 28, 2024 8:15 PM

Is this good or bad for trump? Seems good and that’s bad.

by Anonymousreply 50February 28, 2024 8:21 PM

[bold]IF [/bold] T**** wins, the Leader will feel compelled to corral the party in support of T****’s demands (forget that it’s a separate branch of government).

Mitch don’t want that job.

by Anonymousreply 51February 28, 2024 8:21 PM

Well who hasn't known that Moscow Mitch is ill and failing fast, R48? There's been speculation that he'll step down (or frankly, die) soon, and no one I talk to thought he'd be leader in the next Congress after the two on-camera seizures that no pundit wanted to call "seizures". I wouldn't call it "under wraps" so much as respect for/fear of the guy who wrecked the Senate, wrecked the Supreme Court, was a racist, and somehow despite good competitors who polled well, managed to always win Kentucky by at least a 20-point margin.

by Anonymousreply 52February 28, 2024 8:22 PM
He'll be up for reelection in 2026, I think this is a signal that he won't be running again.

That was never in doubt.
Is this good or bad for trump? Seems good and that’s bad.

Good. They hate each other.

by Anonymousreply 54February 28, 2024 8:22 PM

The NY Times will chime in with "and here's how McConnell's retirement is bad for Biden" any moment now.

by Anonymousreply 55February 28, 2024 8:27 PM

I'm busily preparing that as the opening segment on tomorrow's show R55!

by Anonymousreply 56February 28, 2024 8:29 PM

I'm convinced McConnell caved to MAGA at the last, because he knows the "End is near". Donald the Mob Boss, threatened to make his life in the Care Home a living Hell- no regular diaper changes like Donny gets.

by Anonymousreply 57February 28, 2024 9:06 PM

Is he stepping down into Hell to suffer for all eternity for the way he destroyed America?

by Anonymousreply 58February 28, 2024 9:58 PM

Hoisted on his own petard

by Anonymousreply 59February 28, 2024 10:22 PM

He’s forfeiting his post because he knows Trump is going to be re-elected in November.

by Anonymousreply 60February 28, 2024 10:46 PM

Why wait until November you hateful old bastard?

by Anonymousreply 61February 28, 2024 11:18 PM

Never thought I’d think this, but we may well miss Mitch.

by Anonymousreply 62February 28, 2024 11:20 PM

Fuck that power hungry scumbag. He never should have allowed Trump to be nominated the first time.

by Anonymousreply 63February 28, 2024 11:20 PM

^ What role did McConnell have in getting Trump nominated?

by Anonymousreply 64February 28, 2024 11:25 PM

As a lame duck, he's now lost any clout he had remaining. May be bad for the budget negotiations and Ukraine funding.

by Anonymousreply 65February 29, 2024 12:16 AM

Joy Reid gave an excellent opinion on McConnell stepping down - going through his forty year history, and reminding viewers how he 'burned down the house' every step of the way.

by Anonymousreply 66February 29, 2024 12:34 AM

The Joy Reids would never credit McConnell for resisting Trump’s pressure to repeal the filibuster for legislation.

by Anonymousreply 67February 29, 2024 1:28 AM

Vile man. He did more to harm America in recent decades than anyone else except Trump.

by Anonymousreply 68February 29, 2024 7:46 AM

Biden on McConnell:

“I trusted him and we have a great relationship. We fight like hell. But he has never, never, never misrepresented anything.”

by Anonymousreply 86February 29, 2024 4:35 PM

R66, I heard Joy’s take down this morning on YouTube, and she really laid out all the destruction Mitch committed as majority speaker, and he did it all with pride, and a smile on his face. In my opinion, January 6th did seem to rattle him. Too late now Mitch. She gave him the good burning he deserved.

R26, John Thune a closet case? Please tell me more. This is news to me. 10 years ago, he had that hot daddy vibe that I am attracted to. Too bad he’s a republican.

by Anonymousreply 87February 29, 2024 4:42 PM

Biden did the classy thing once again - he took the high road. He's not going to trash talk someone he's known and worked with for 40 years. He made a short, respectful statement.

by Anonymousreply 88February 29, 2024 6:37 PM

Call me a conspiracy theorist, BUT didn’t his wife’s younger sister just die in an “accident” within the last month?

Maybe ole Pootz was sending a message to the old cootz telling him he’d best step aside.

by Anonymousreply 101March 1, 2024 9:20 AM

There's not a lot left for him to fuck up. Some day tho we'll look fondly on him as the guy who didn't believe we needed a nuclear war to signal to Jesus that it sad time to start the rapture. Or Mitch was good because he didn't call for lynching blacks on town squares or do Nazi salutes before his speeches

Every Republican Senator from WY, TN, IN, ND, TX, NE, MO, UT, FL, MS voted to acquit Trump twice and also voted for every one of his Leo/Crow Supreme Court nominees who overturned Roe. Biden knows that Women's Rights to access to healthcare and abortion services runs through the Senate, and THAT is the hammer Biden will drop and run on when Republican MAGAts least expect.

by Anonymousreply 123March 3, 2024 4:43 PM

McConnell is up for election in 2026. Amy McGrath has a sizable war chest and has been gunning for him since her loss in 2020.

Either, Democrats get the Senate Super Majority in 2024 or we have to wait for Joe to leave on a huge high note in 2026.

So much better in 2024.

by Anonymousreply 124March 3, 2024 6:46 PM

^ Yes, dropping dead on the the Senate floor is all the rage these days. Mitt Romney probably would have as well, but all his old buddies pretty much hate him now so he's leaving with some dignity

by Anonymousreply 125March 3, 2024 7:10 PM

I’ll have what R124 is on. First, there’s the thinking that a Democrat can win a national election in Kentucky. Then, there’s the belief a Senate “Super Majority” is in the offing in this or the next cycle. WTF?!? I wish it were otherwise, but the Democrats are wholly on defensive in Senate races this year. They will be exceedingly lucky to hold on to their Senate seats in Ohio & Montana. West Virginia is lost. The retirement of Debby Stabenow gives Michigan republicans a real chance in Michigan (depending on whom they nominate). And, although I still like the Democrats’s chances to retain retiring Ben Carson’s seat in Maryland, the entry of the popular Republican former governor Larry Hogan gives them as good if not better chance to flip a Democratic seat than any Democrat has to flip a Republican seat this cycle.

by Anonymousreply 126March 3, 2024 7:29 PM

R126, When Republicans for Biden arise, we will be in game changing Democrats for Reagan territory.

by Anonymousreply 127March 3, 2024 7:35 PM

I wish, R127. I definitely believe we’re in the midst of a Great Realignment, but it works both ways. Once reliable Democratic voters have realigned into the Republican camp, while many former Republicans, including the OG Never Trumpers, are now Democratic voters. I think - I hope - the latter will eclipse the former, but it will still be close in November. We’re not seeing any evidence that Democrats can look forward to Senate majorities, let alone supermajorities, in the foreseeable future.

Around this time in 2020 I was pretty depressed and anxious about the upcoming election.

Mitch, fall down.

I am requesting a s l o w. painful death for our friend Mitch. It is NOT too much to ask. I envision a rusty razor blade slowly skinning him as he hangs nude and upside down inside the halls of congress. Or maybe outside on a very frigid day.

by Anonymousreply 137March 4, 2024 8:08 AM

He’s married to that little Asian tart? Why, he looks like Aunt Ida surprised in her bathrobe.

by Anonymousreply 138March 4, 2024 8:13 AM

@r137, "I am requesting a s l o w. painful death for our friend Mitch. "

I think he's already about mid-cycle in the death spiral

by Anonymousreply 139March 4, 2024 8:17 AM

^ Maybe Obama could follow him around in a grim reaper outfit... That ought to finish him off

I'm counting on a deathbed conversion to socialism.

by Anonymousreply 141March 4, 2024 11:09 AM

Turtle manipulated rules essentially stealing two Supreme Court appointments. He railroaded through Trump judge nominees, and held-up an abundance of Obama nominees.

McConnell’s biggest impact has been on the federal judiciary. He failed to support either Trump impeachment. Had he done so, the country would be free of the corrupt Con Man running for office.

by Anonymousreply 142March 4, 2024 1:00 PM
I never realized Mitch is missing so many teeth. He has no lower left bridge work in OP's preview picture. Elaine must have been overcome with sorrow about her daughter's death to remind him before he left the house that morning.

Whenever I watch the original THE COLOR PURPLE, when Celine’s father says, “Celie, you gots the ugliest smile this side of creation!”, it makes me think of McConnell. His smile really IS ugly.

by Anonymousreply 143March 4, 2024 6:21 PM

Celie not Celine!

by Anonymousreply 144March 4, 2024 6:22 PM

Mitch doesn't want to be in the minority, which is why he's stepping down as leader. The smart Republicans can see that they're about to lose bigly in November because of Trump/MAGA, abortion bans, and the rest of their extremist platform.

by Anonymousreply 145March 4, 2024 6:39 PM

Nah, R145, the smart republicans know that the House is likely lost, but the Senate looks very promising. West Virginia is theirs, and one of either Montana or (less likely) Ohio is more than doable.

by Anonymousreply 146March 4, 2024 6:48 PM

^ They're still going to lie, cheat and steal to hold onto power

I dumped Broken Old Crow & Coco Chow and am sending them away. They aren’t loyal.

by Anonymousreply 148March 4, 2024 9:46 PM

I'm counting on a deathbed.

by Anonymousreply 149March 4, 2024 10:25 PM

I'm counting on Midnight Candles.

by Anonymousreply 150March 4, 2024 11:47 PM

Mitch will be dead by Labor Day, he's been circling the drain for awhile now.

by Anonymousreply 151March 5, 2024 4:17 AM

Like the Wicked Witch of the West, he's melting.

by Anonymousreply 152March 5, 2024 6:28 AM

Chow-Chow is a dyke. She and Addison are bearding for each other. Her father will disinherit her if it's revealed she's a muffdiver.

by Anonymousreply 153March 5, 2024 7:29 AM

He looks like an anthropomorphic turkey.

Moscow Mitch is as ugly as homemade sin.

by Anonymousreply 156March 5, 2024 8:06 AM

Wait until you see what comes after Mitch.

by Anonymousreply 157March 5, 2024 11:32 AM

Mitch has done his share of sneakiness and underhanded moves for decades.

His old guard GOP, which he led in the Senate, has evaporated or diminished to next to nothing.

Mitch’s party is all Trump-Putin now. Others are not welcomed.

by Anonymousreply 158March 5, 2024 12:38 PM
Mitch’s party is all Trump-Putin now. Others are not welcomed.

Just the other day, Trump, by name, ruled Mitt Romney out of the party. Let's hope a good number of Romney's '12 voters take that seriously (if they haven't already left their former party).

Nothing to say, r160. Dump called McConnell’s wife horrible names and sicced his sycophants on him Jan. 6. What a bottomless hole of shit.

by Anonymousreply 161March 6, 2024 2:49 PM

Mitch created a monster that is now devouring him.

Is this like a Disney movie?

The Sorcerer's Apprentice?

by Anonymousreply 162March 6, 2024 5:27 PM

He always reminds me of Mason Verger.

by Anonymousreply 163March 6, 2024 5:29 PM

So glad we won't have to look at his miserable, frowning, melting-into-his-neck face much longer.

by Anonymousreply 164March 6, 2024 6:11 PM

I'm glad, too. He's so fucking ugly.

by Anonymousreply 167June 19, 2024 3:42 AM

How many teeth does this guy have, like a hundred?

by Anonymousreply 168June 19, 2024 4:10 AM

In another thread months ago I predicted he'd be gone (or dead) by Labor Day.

I'm sticking to it!

by Anonymousreply 169June 19, 2024 4:10 AM

Will Senator Lindsey Graham replace Mitch as leader? Lá Sènatrice is beloved by Senators, including plenty of Democrats. It will excite the media who sees her as their favorite to feature.

As to the public, Democrats dislike her, MAGAs detest her.
