I'm Sharing My Special Secret Rescue Cat Food Recipe
My furbabies go zoomy when I start mashing.
You're welcome.
Ingredients:
1 can of sardines in water
1/2 cup of cooked and mashed prunes
1/2 cup of diced tomatoes
1 cup of cooked and flaked fish (such as salmon or tuna)
Instructions:
In a bowl, combine the mashed prunes, diced tomatoes, and flaked fish.
Drain the can of sardines and add them to the bowl, mashing them up with the other ingredients.
Mix everything together until well combined.
Serve a portion of the homemade cat food to your cat, storing the rest in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Plums and prunes are toxic to cats, as are unripe tomatoes. Very ripe tomatoes are okay.

OP, are they rescue cats?

I take two cans of tuna fish and run them through the meat grinder and then add clam juice and peanut butter.

God, the stink in my kitchen after that would be worse than an untended litter box! Even my cat would complain.

Sardines, prunes, salmon, tuna? Cat food recipe or not, I'm eagerly watching this thread for Greg's comment.

R1 These are just things that the cat food industry is telling you to get you to buy their products. Don't believe them and do our own research.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 28, 2024 3:15 AM

R2 Well, of course they are. If I hadn't bought them who knows where they'd be right now.

Interesting... and exactly where do you leave this food for the cats? Please be as specific as possible.

r9 I did my research. Prunes and plums are not well tolerated by cats, and in larger dose can be fatal.
Good luck to your rescue cat.
By the way, I've made my own dog food for years. So i'm not invested buying bagged or dry pet food in the least.

R21, is your dog a rescue dog?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 28, 2024 3:42 AM

Nope. But I've had rescue dogs in the past.
I brought home a new puppy last Friday after my old boy died last December. I've talked about him before on here. I'm not making him food just yet, but I will when he gets older.

R21 I have two rescue cats. They love the food I make them. You are just swallowing the lies that the industry puts out.
They also love asparagus and cauliflower.

Good God You People! You think that's nutritionally complete? All you need ( unless your cat has metabolic or allergy issues diagnosed by a veterinarian) is:
1. Good Quality dry kibble ( I use Purina Indoor Cat Formula) no store brands!
2. Good Quality Wet cat food ( I use Sheba cuts individual portions)
3. Water , preferably a pet fountain with a carbon filter.
Maybe some salmon oil supplement.

Cats are true carnivores. Feeding them vegetables is at best a waste of vegetables and at worst harmful to their health.

R30 You are simply regurgitating what you hear from Big Pet Food. Mine deserve a balanced diet and food they enjoy. They happily eat what I give them. They're munching a bit of bread pudding for breakfast and loving it.

OP, I always chop four or five mice in the Food processor and add them to the mix.
Rescue Kitty Babies like the taste of something familiar when transitioning to Pet Parent Indoor/Outdoor Care.

Brilliant idea!
Are the mice dead when they get dropped into the work bowl or do you pulse them?

R30 While domestic cats are commonly believed to be carnivores, they actually fall under the category of obligate carnivores. This means that their diet can consist of meat and plant-based foods. In the wild, cats would eat the stomach contents of their prey, which often includes grasses and other plant material. Additionally, many commercial cat foods contain grains and vegetables to provide a well-rounded diet.

I do believe the pet food companies Should make a "mouse" flavored cat food. Cats Love micey taste.

We are a humane group of free-beast conservatresses and protectresses, R34.
One of our members formerly worked in a traveling carnival as a geek, and she kindly bites the heads off the mice (chops the tails with her incisors because they get caught in the blades sometimes).
The only tiny problem is that if we don't watch her she swallows the heads. Our kitten babies like the crunch, so we encourage her to be selfless.

r39, for the past decade, I was wondering why a company hasn't done a rat and mouse food for cats/dogs. It would be a small footprint to maintain. Perhaps the negative connotations associated with rodents.

I never feed fish to my animals. I’m not stinking up my house.

Fuck that recipe.
I will say cats may or may not be finicky eaters, but they will let you know if the food is off.
Pet food producers have a low bar for acceptable product. It’s not like the pet can rat them out. So, if the meat is very old or spoiled or contaminated, they get a free pass on that batch - unless it has too much melamine.

I prefer country cats, who (I'll give them the personal rather than impersonal pronoun) do not turn away from what is set for them.
Cats ought not to be coddled.

I hope fucking idiot OP’s trolling us:
For humans, the health benefits of anti-oxidant-packed dried plums can’t be understated. They’re commonly eaten to ease constipation and nausea. Therefore, you may be wondering if you can give prunes to your cat with constipation or stomach issues. Unlike humans, cats cannot eat plums or prunes—prunes are toxic and sometimes fatal to cats.
