Tied between Celine Dion, Michael Bublé and Andrea Bocelli.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 26, 2024 1:54 PM |
The thing with Floptina is that she is heavily overusing melismas and runs to hide her lack of ability to sing high notes.
Because he can't belt properly she is forced either to dodge the high notes like in Voice Within or start screaming.
I don't know who called her voice of generation but she is horrible.

What about Jennifer Lopez?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 26, 2024 6:49 PM |
Agree with most here... Beyonce is more of a performer in my mind, than a singer... singing isn't really what she's known for as much as her image/presence/shows and choreography. I do think she's very overrated as a performer but belting singer, nah. That's a stretch.
At one time I thought Mariah would de throne Whitney, but nope. Whitney always had more gravitas than Mariah ever did, even with Mariah's once eardrum breaking notes. Mariah's overrated.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 26, 2024 6:51 PM |
Celine Dion is actually very good. She has the most difficult songs from the vocal trinity of mariah, whitney and her because her songs start high and get even higher. At the beginning of Whitney's career, her songs were ultra high too but that changed quickly and Mariah's songs were also high from 1992 till 1998 but Celine's songs, even up intil 2008, required you to have incredible stamina.
I can understand though when people say Celine is overrated because she sounds nasal and has a frenchy accent and she doesn't do any special vocal runs. She is too straightforward and that can seem uninspiring and boring to many but try it out yourself and sing this song of hers. You will notice that it is too difficult.
R34 Mariah is overrated to many people because she was a very low voice who forced herself to sing high. I think she is amazing but what she did in the 90s was unnatural. It was like Barry White trying to sing like Adam Lambert. She was able to do it because she had strong vocal chords but even those gave up at the end of the 90s. Don't believe me. Look up an interview of Mariah from 1993. She said it there herself, that she is an alto. The lowest female voice but she wanted to sing and feminine like other singers, so she forced herself to sing high and her body was able to handle it for quite some time.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 26, 2024 6:57 PM |
R35 interesting. I think she should have stayed an alto.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 26, 2024 6:58 PM |
"Celine... doesn't do any special vocal runs"
Are you kidding?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 26, 2024 7:02 PM |
R37 Sorry but these vocal runs are like pyramids. It's not like wowuwowhu like Mariah or even Christina do it. As I said, I respect Celine and I don't think she is overrated but her vocal runs are straight lines that change direction a few times while the other singers mentioned before can do circles.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 26, 2024 7:35 PM |
A lot of the folks mentioned here aren't even considered "good", let alone "overrated". Bob Dylan was always about the song, not the vocals.
Pavarotti had perfect pitch, diction, breath control, and a clear, ringing tenor; not only was he a good singer, but one of the all-time greats.
[quote]Billie Holiday. Her voice is not pleasant yet many sing her praises.
Technically not a great singer, but there's a lot to be said for her "song styling" and interpretation -- getting the point of the song across.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 26, 2024 7:35 PM |
Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia are the co-owners this thread, by the way. Their screaming and shouting on key have become predictable and tiresome: "I can yell on key louder than you can!" Jennifer Holliday did it much, much better.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 26, 2024 11:52 PM |
R25, Celine has a very good voice but like Barbra Streisand before her, she is SO uncool. That video just reiterates that.

R52 Mariah's cover of without you only goes up to a C5. This is what altos usually do. Good observation, you should become a music teacher. She should have continued with these lower songs. Then her voice wouldn't be so raspy and hag-like these days.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 27, 2024 11:23 AM |
R53 R54 please describe the uncool-ness. I think she looks cool with her dance moves or do you mean something else in the video?
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 27, 2024 11:24 AM |
R59, seriously, you think she looks cool? She looks like a fish out of water! Regarding being uncool (aside from the video), Celine has just always come off in the same way as Laura Branigan.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 27, 2024 1:43 PM |
R58, lol thank you. I always thought she sounded very comfortable in that range. Without You is one of her most popular songs and that's probably the reason. She really owns that cover.

Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish are really not "singers", but songwriters.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 29, 2024 4:34 PM |
R64, these debates always pop up on these kind of threads (for good reason). Does "overrated singer" mean singers who are considered amazing? Or does it mean singers who sold a lot of product? Personally, I'd say the former. On another one of these threads, someone claimed Madonna is the most overrated singer of all time since she's sold ~250 million but has a weak voice. I don't think that argument really holds up.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 29, 2024 4:41 PM |
[quote]Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish are really not "singers", but songwriters.
Billie Eyetrash’s brother writes all her songs. All she does is mumble them.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 29, 2024 5:14 PM |
R64 So why should we 'listen' to them?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 29, 2024 5:16 PM |
I don't think Madonna is overrated as a singer. She's always been more of a pop singer like Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue, to an extent, and it works for her music very well. If people are expecting everyone to sing like Mariah Carey circa 1992 on any "pop" songs that hit the airwaves, then I suppose her singing doesn't measure up to such standards. But they are two very different sounds and also covering very different musical material, and few people are thinking of Madonna as a "vocalist." There's more to it than that. Same with Janet Jackson. It works for the material, but she isn't trying to play Carnegie Hall.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 29, 2024 5:26 PM |
I wanted to add that I definitely feel like Christina Aguilera is an overrated singer, as is Ariana Grande. The gays go wild for these two, to an extent, because they have some vocal power (and, I guess, are perceived as divas?) , but to me they are second hand versions of peak Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. And their material is also much, much worse.
An overrated singer from outside of the pop music world would be Judy Kuhn for me. I enjoy her, but she was really talked up as a great singer in the 80s and 90s in the musical theatre world. To me, she sounded wooden, or like she had eaten a peanut butter sandwich and started singing with some of it still stuck in the back of her throat. Definitely not a bad singer by any means, but "overrated?" I would say so.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 29, 2024 5:35 PM |
Define overrated. Is it a singer who’s a critical darling whose voice doesn’t appeal to you? Is that what you’re asking about?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 29, 2024 5:41 PM |
Billie Holliday isn't overrated.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 29, 2024 5:45 PM |
Jennifer Lopez is not overrated. She simply cannot sing and her “music” is laughable. I don’t think anyone ever rated her to be a good singer.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 29, 2024 6:19 PM |
I don't know her
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 29, 2024 8:16 PM |
I've never paid attention to Jennifer Lopez other than occasionally hearing some of her hits on the radio or in Walgreens. I was shocked at how amateurish she sounded when she sang at the Biden's inauguration. Why would they ask JLo to sing after Obama had Aretha Franklin and Beyonce?
