Has anyone found any tricks when it comes to getting the best price on a hotel in NYC? Manhattan is so ridiculously priced per night. I don't want to stay near the airport. I would like to stay in Manhattan, but don't want to stay in a hostel. It doesn't need to be St. Regis or the Peninsula. But it seems like I can find something decent, like a Hyatt for less than $300 a night, but it's tough. I know the time of year I am looking to travel, May, is highly desirable, but there has to be some way to get a better rate. Any ideas?

Have you tried the interwebs?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 25, 2024 11:47 AM |
Check out the Hotel Edison. It is a tourist-class hotel (likely a 2.5 star) built in the 1930s, and about 1/2 block from Times Square. Not modern, but clean and the location can't be beat. I checked out their website, and rooms around Mother's Day weekend are $250 for a queen-sized room. I've stayed there in the past and about 1/2 of the guests were international guests.

My wifi is down R1, I have been searching and calling using the yellow pages.
Of course I am using the interwebs, but their are so many algorithms that lock you into certain prices repeatedly depending on your search history. There are also I know better days to search. There is a certain time period before as well that might be better. Going to the hotel's site directly can help. I am looking for any other tips people might have found that might work - certain search engines they prefer, or even a hotel they know that offers deals certain days, etc...

There’s so many fucking hotels in Manhattan, but most are the same brands at the same price points …it ain’t hard so why are you overthinking it?

I am going to a Nephews graduation in ATL the previous weekend. I will be traveling through NYC because those tend to be the cheaper fairs overall when you're coming from overseas. But coming back I would like to stay in NYC two nights before I head back home. Those two days could range anywhere from the 15th to the 20th.

Save a bundle and book the morning of your check-in. I do this all the time when I travel and never sleep in rat traps, or on the street. Just found Hilton Garden Inn in NYC for $122 for today, Sunday 2/25 though 2/28. Did the same for Sunday 3/10 through 3/13 and the price is $242. It depends on the time of year of course, but major hotels discount same day rather that have non-occupied rooms.

R10 gives some great advice break out the days which I did not do. Week days vs weekends.
I saw some really great looking deals for your whole time frame until I clicked on the hotel to see their Refundable rate which was beyond $300. Are you a risk taker?
On Priceline I was shown 3 hotels all 4 stars, all well reviewed (7.6 to 8.0 ) all in a downtown location all $219 all Non Refundable all regularly priced at over $300.
You can get one for $219 if you are comfortable with non refundable and comfortable with PL picking one of the 3 hotels for you.
At one time PL offered cheap cancelation ins but I have no idea if they still do.

Dates and timing is everything. I took a look at March 1-2 just to see how booking a non refundable might work. Lots of hotels being advertised at really cheap prices. Under $200 a night.
That PL we will pick one of these 3 hotels was no longer $219 but was now $110
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 25, 2024 1:18 PM |
New York is one of the most expensive places on the planet. And airbnbs are now mostly banned in NY, so hotels are very expensive.
Try looking in Long Island City (which is a neighborhood in Queens very convenient to Manhattan, not in Long Island). You say you want to stay in Manhattan, but there are plenty of neighborhoods that are still quite convenient and will be cheaper.
The other alternative is of course stay in Jersey (if you stay in Jersey City off the PATH train, that train makes run 24 hrs). But I would look in the outerboroughs first.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 25, 2024 1:21 PM |
Arthouse on the UWS is nice if you can get a good rate. They sometimes run under $300 if you book out in advance.

[quote]I am using the interwebs, but their are so many algorithms that lock you into certain prices repeatedly depending on your search history. There are also I know better days to search. There is a certain time period before as well that might be better. Going to the hotel's site directly can help.
The only assumption of these that's still true is the third: booking directly with the hotel is usually the best option.
Day of the week? While it used to be true that there were uniform days of the week when airlines changed fares, hotels don't coordinate price adjustments for Tuesday mornings at 08.00 or 12.01.. Maybe some hotels do it at a consistent time, but most do not. They change prices whenever there is reason to do.
And the search history price locks are both overstated and very short term. If you look at Marriott prices this week and then again next, you're fine; within 24 hours or one log-on session they *might* lock their quotes.
Start by using the Hotels tab on Google Flights and search as a start. Look at the Hotels Tonight app to see what hotels are attractively priced and of interest for the upcoming weekend, for instance, and then investigate their prices for your own dates using the hotel websites.
Booking.com offers a big selection and shows the extent to which hotels discount prices. It's another good starting point for a search and transparent in showing costs of non-refundable vs. cancelable reservations. Check out the hotels of interest through their own websites or call reservations and ask about discounts relative the Booking.com rates. They will usually have something no more than a few dollars different and otherwise comparable.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 25, 2024 1:41 PM |
[quote] My wifi is down [R1], I have been searching and calling using the yellow pages.
This can’t be true.
On the off chance it is - OP, for some things it’s worth shopping around for a great deal, for others not so much. I’d accept paying close to $400 for the hotel in exchange for peace of mind and convenience. You aren’t going to find a magical deal and it’s only two nights. If you find a place for $250/night and it’s a dump it will ruin your trip. Spend the incremental $300 for two night and enjoy yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 25, 2024 1:46 PM |
Smart shoppers don’t overpay. And they don’t stay at an NJ airport. Instead of paying $400 they find a $250 hotel that they are comfortable with. Not everyone can casually raise their hotel, price an extra $100 a night. Many are gaging at the thought they may have to pay $300 a night.

Any of The Pod hotels are well priced, modern and clean. I used to work for them. The original, on 51st, has SOME rooms that share a bathroom down the hall, but this is only a handful. Of course the lower price reflects that.
The other locations, on 39th, Times Square and Brooklyn are newer, the 39th has an amazing rooftop bar, but might be closed for winter.
The sizes are similar to cruise ship cabins, perfect if all you plan to do is sleep there.

Why not do what my last boyfriend (an 8+ and the love of my life) did:
He arrived in NYC from London with his sexy voice and sleepy bedroom eyes a few days before Christmas.
Stopped in Times Square and checked his bag at the Hotel Edison.
Went to the TKTS booth and bought a ticket for some show.
After the theater, he headed down to The Monster in the Village.
Chatted with several fellows and finally picked someone who offered him a trip to see his Brooklyn Brownstone (me, a strong 6).
Stayed the night, had fantastic sex (as reported by me), and ended up staying for 10 days (picked his bag up from the Edison on Day 2).
Returned the favor, by letting me stay with him in London for 5 days.
You may think he was a whore, but I definitely did not feel taken advantage of. I still remember our New Year's Eve at a penthouse party on Central Park West. It was probably the most romantic moment of my life.

Prices tend to be lower below Midtown (Chelsea, SOHO, Tribeca, Wall Street). Jersey City has many hotels and you can take the PATH train to Manhattan. The Doubletree next to Newark Penn Station is usually a good value--a little faded. You also can find reasonable chain hotels in Long Island City and Brooklyn.

I'm in my 60s but with the face and body of a 30-year-old.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | March 2, 2024 4:10 PM |
Stay at the airport. Travelocity has prices under $150 to $300.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | March 2, 2024 4:14 PM |
No, OP, don't stay at the airport. There's an entire city with 5 boroughs to stay in.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | March 2, 2024 4:15 PM |
If OP is looking to save money and is just using his hotel for sleeping, nothing wrong with the airport.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | March 2, 2024 4:16 PM |
It’s extremely time consuming and expensive to get from the airport to anything worth doing in nyc.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | March 2, 2024 4:18 PM |
R107 you’ve heard about their bedbug issues? Or the major issue regarding “street activity” around those blocks—spillover from the migrant and homeless hotel situation.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 2, 2024 4:22 PM |
No, R99, you didn't hit a nerve. Well you hit that what an idiot he is nerve, yeah, because you're rude, ageist, and narrow-minded. The block isn't about the sharpness of your observation but the dullness of it.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 2, 2024 4:22 PM |
Okay, well (I have done this) ...stay at an airport hotel your final night. You save money and if you're leaving early in the morning, you're already there.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 2, 2024 4:24 PM |
Think it takes 40-45mins to get from either Newark or LaGuardia airport to NYC.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 2, 2024 4:27 PM |
No it’s doesn’t. That would be in the dead of night.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | March 2, 2024 4:29 PM |
If you stay in Yonkers it'd be 45 min. to an hour to downtown Manhattan.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 2, 2024 4:31 PM |
R126 I'm talking train, not traffic.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | March 2, 2024 4:31 PM |
Since LaGuardia is in NYC, you might revise that to zero minutes.
From the Q70 express bus to Roosevelt/Jackson Heights stop on the E train to 23rd street and the heart of Chelsea is less than 45 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | March 2, 2024 4:31 PM |
[quote]Since LaGuardia is in NYC, you might revise that to zero minutes.
Sad pedant. You knew very well what I meant.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | March 2, 2024 4:33 PM |
From Terminal 4 JFK Air train to Jamaica and then the E train to 23rd street is one hour total travel time. Using the LIRR to Penn Station is 50 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | March 2, 2024 4:34 PM |
Then say what you mean next time. This the DL, not your cousin in Cleveland, you’re talking to.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | March 2, 2024 4:35 PM |
It makes zero sense to say by the airport. It takes an hour or more than an hour to get from any NYC-adjacent airport to the city. Only an idiot would suggest staying by the airport.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | March 2, 2024 4:37 PM |
No self respecting NY hotel manager would give you a room, try leaving your goat and sister back at the trailer park.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | March 2, 2024 4:40 PM |
If Op is a cum dump then he just needs to go on Sniffies and ask for a gangbang host. He’ll have a place to stay in a New York minute.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 2, 2024 4:43 PM |
Darling R135, you're confusing OP with yourself, you senile old whore.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | March 2, 2024 4:44 PM |
Stop making no sense. You’re lousy with the comeback…
by Anonymous | reply 137 | March 2, 2024 4:48 PM |
Sure, dear R137. Pour yourself yet another drink.

R133 In LA it can take an hour to drive to a restaurant for dinner.

Thank you, Steve Martin posting from the 90s. ;)
by Anonymous | reply 142 | March 2, 2024 5:57 PM |
Now tell us how to take the air train/subway from LAX to WeHo!
by Anonymous | reply 143 | March 2, 2024 5:58 PM |
That's LA, R141.OP is going to NYC. Your analogy is lacking in relevance.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 2, 2024 5:59 PM |
Sense of humor where art thou^^
by Anonymous | reply 145 | March 2, 2024 5:59 PM |
So sorry, R145--it wasn't really that funny.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | March 2, 2024 6:02 PM |
R144 Fine! I thought OP was trying not to spend $500 for a room. If you expect to save money you have to make sacrifices or give up something. I visited San Francisco once with a friend and we rented a cheap room at a winery 50 minutes away, and rented a cheap Enterprise car. Saw everything in the city we wanted to see and had a good time. You have to give up *something* if you want to pay a lot less.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | March 2, 2024 6:03 PM |
I agree—but the context was clear (I’m not the poster who wrote it)
by Anonymous | reply 148 | March 2, 2024 6:03 PM |
FFS, it's far from impossible to get a cheap hotel. There are Holiday Inn hotels and the like--right in Manhattan! Hicks.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | March 2, 2024 6:06 PM |
The best lodging advice given here was Leo House. I live around the corner and it is a go-to place for what Op “apparently” is looking for. No hanky-panky there, but you’re still in the heart of Chelsea—with easy walking, bike, bus and subway access to everything you could possibly see in Manhattan over 48 hours.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 2, 2024 6:07 PM |
R149 Well, that's a sacrifice, too!
by Anonymous | reply 151 | March 2, 2024 6:08 PM |
There's a B&B in Hell's Kitchen that a lot of Europeans stay at.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 2, 2024 6:09 PM |
Well, we know how DL gets about Europeans.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | March 2, 2024 6:12 PM |
Hot, bothered & wet! If they are uncut …. ;)
by Anonymous | reply 154 | March 2, 2024 6:13 PM |
Not gay Europeans, dears. All European types frequent this B&B. It's not a sex hotel.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | March 2, 2024 6:15 PM |
It’s Hell’s Kitchen, where anything goes!
I won’t stand corrected. ;)
by Anonymous | reply 156 | March 2, 2024 6:19 PM |
Even worse then.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | March 2, 2024 6:20 PM |
OP if you're having problems with WiFi how are you posting on DL?
by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 2, 2024 6:23 PM |
It beats staying by the airport. It's in the middle of Manhattan.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | March 2, 2024 6:31 PM |
I was looking at the Pod Hotel near Times Sq. Yes, tiny rooms but with full bathroom & WiFi, tv, amenities. There’s actually a calendar where you can see two months of rates at a time. They vary WIDELY. Like a room that is $239 per night in mid week April is $84 tomorrow night. But you also see nights further out when it’s just over $100.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | March 2, 2024 6:33 PM |
See! It can be done!
by Anonymous | reply 161 | March 2, 2024 6:34 PM |
Friends from London stayed at the Artisan, downtown Manhattan. It was quite nice, my friends liked the attentive staff, amenities, very comfortable room, etc. Small terrace but nice for a spring/summer evening.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | March 2, 2024 6:41 PM |
OP Here. I am still looking. The crazy thing is I lived in NYC for 26 years. I am very familiar with the city itself, just not needing to find a hotel in the city. The even crazier thing is having friends and no one having more than a couch to crash on. And no I am not young. I guess I would be considered old by someone young and young by someone old. I will have just celebrated my 49th birthday then. And I am actually looking for my own hotel room just to hook up with two different fuck buddies. I don't want to say with anyone. I want me own space. I have two days before I get on a plan and head back to Europe.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | March 2, 2024 10:49 PM |
[quote]And I am actually looking for my own hotel room just to hook up with two different fuck buddies.
Aren't there flop houses, hot pillow joints, that rent by the hour for whores?
Isn't there a website for this before you get on your plan?
by Anonymous | reply 164 | March 2, 2024 10:54 PM |
Rent by the hour r164? SO where am I suppose to stay between those two buddies?
by Anonymous | reply 165 | March 2, 2024 11:02 PM |
Now he tells us…Christ almighty you don’t deserve any more advice. You buried the lede. …book a fleabag like the Edison and be fine with it. Or the Senton if you dare.

r165, in Olde Time Square looking for more.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | March 2, 2024 11:14 PM |
The Liberty Inn downtown off the West Side Highway is a famous hot-sheets hotel for fucking.
You can book a stay as short as two hours.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | March 2, 2024 11:28 PM |
Nope—chiuso. Permanently.
The Sentin is the only thing around…

I agree "hole" heartedly with R166. I'm sorry I wasted my time with whore OP.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | March 2, 2024 11:43 PM |
Oh wow this is the pod HOSTEL. Jesus Christ.
OP you are simply priced out because of the terrible time of year you chose to visit.
You will not be able to do your trip for your budget in May. You will have to pay if you want to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | March 2, 2024 11:53 PM |
I FOUND SOME!
OP you will have to stay in the Financial District and you will have to book now.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | March 2, 2024 11:59 PM |
That Club Quarters is fine.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | March 3, 2024 12:02 AM |
My partner and I will be visiting for 9 nights in April and have booked a hotel just off Madison Avenue for almost $3000 total, including breakfast and taxes. It's not particularly cheap but I think it's a relatively good deal. We saw cheaper places but we wanted something relatively central and we liked the look of this place. It's also very European and belongs to a "collection" that we've stayed in before in Europe.
Not sure about using it as a sex hotel, though.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | March 10, 2024 8:42 AM |
I've stayed several times in and can recommend the Salisbury, the Park Lane, the Beauclaire, and, close to Port Authority, the Skyline on 10th.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | March 10, 2024 9:02 AM |
Several times I have stayed at the La Quinta in Long Island City. Not luxurious, but 1 block from the 7 train, and 15 minutes into Manhattan (Grand Central station) or even faster to Manhattan if you leap off the 7 at Queensboro Plaza just as an N train arrives headed into Manhattan (59th and Lex). I'm seeing some deals there right now for $118/night. It's up to you, but if I'm staying for 5 days and can save $500-$700 on accommodations which I could use for theater tickets or nice restaurants, I'm going for the cheaper room. That part of LIC is very heavily traveled and Queens Blvd is full of shops and restaurants right along that stretch so it feels quite safe to me. The last time I stayed there was in 2018, so caveat emptor, but I think it's still worth checking out.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | March 10, 2024 9:32 AM |
R176, Your post reads like a very intimidating math problem.
"If Tourist A takes the 7 Train to GCT, and Tourist B leaps off the 7 Train to catch the N Train at 59th, which Tourist will pay more for a taxi to a TKTS booth by 2:00 p.m. EDST?"
by Anonymous | reply 177 | March 11, 2024 3:59 AM |
As someone said earlier it's best to book the week before or the week of....I live in Philadelphia and every trip I've taken I've booked no earlier than 7 days...There are so many hotels that they start to do deals
