Yup, Scott exceeded the budget by close to $150 million.
“Gladiator 2” had a budget of $165 million- Ridley Scott ended up spending $310 million instead

Absolutely insane. How the hell do studios make money if they’re spending $500 million+ on each big movie? And then not even getting it back?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 23, 2024 6:14 PM |
The strikes caused the budget to explode, according to the story. The film should do fine at the box office, though. Unless it's a total mess.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 23, 2024 6:21 PM |
Good movies flop all the time and shitty movies do well all the time. This weird idea that “a film will do fine if it’s good” is false. We’ve seen quite the contrary
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 23, 2024 6:22 PM |
Is the film going to show lots of "Gladiator Homo sex", Roman orgies& fountains of wine and cum?
You can throw in "gurl tits and pussy too"& some lez action for the str8's.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 23, 2024 6:28 PM |
R4 Gotta make money so have gay sex? You live in a world of delusion, huh? That would automatically kill its box office, especially in the foreign market.

Are you not entertained?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 23, 2024 6:35 PM |
This is the second time I have read of Paramount pissing away a lot of money on projects.
Is it going under?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 23, 2024 6:37 PM |
Probably why they’re considering merging with Sony.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 23, 2024 6:46 PM |
I hope it’s better than his horrible Napoleon . .
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 23, 2024 7:05 PM |
Ridley Scott needs to retire, he hasn't made a good movie in a very long time.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 23, 2024 7:19 PM |
Ya think "fixing" this in post production comes cheap?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 23, 2024 8:14 PM |
He isn’t in the movie r11.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 23, 2024 8:17 PM |
Wow, Russell! WTF! Lay off the potato chips, already.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 23, 2024 8:35 PM |
We are soon gonna see a 1970s type studio collapse again.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 23, 2024 9:27 PM |
Good grief it'll need to gross $900 million or close to that to make any kind of profit. Of course if it bombs, they'll still allow Ridley to direct more large-budget films.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 23, 2024 9:31 PM |
Not exactly wise throwing such an obscene amount of cash at a movie given how many such wannabe-blockbusters are desperately struggling to pull in the punters.
Also, what has “our dear Paul” done to suggest he’s a box office draw?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 23, 2024 9:36 PM |
R15 is here to make up fake numbers.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 23, 2024 9:51 PM |
R16 again, BOX OFFICE DRAWS ARE NOT EVEN A THING IN 2024. Even big stars are flopping right now.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 23, 2024 9:52 PM |
He isn't that far off R17.
$310M budget
Throw in $90M for advertising
Movie theaters keep 50% of every ticket sold, so yes, this movie will need to gross roughly $800M to even break even.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 23, 2024 10:00 PM |
R19 no.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 23, 2024 10:01 PM |
If it fails Ridley should just jump off a bridge.

$300 million on a movie where Mescal is the marquee star?! He is the next Taylor Kitsch.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 24, 2024 1:32 AM |
Is Mescal (not Pascal) a fag?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 24, 2024 1:36 AM |
It’s likely been said, but to get asses in seats, there better be a lot of ass and cock on display.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 24, 2024 1:40 AM |
NAPOLEON cost $200 million (not including marketing) and grossed $220 million worldwide, so it still lost money.
If this film isn't a hit, I imagine Mescal will be back in indie films full time for a while.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 24, 2024 2:02 AM |
R31 bud, every film he has lined up is an indie and he stated that Indie’s are where he wants to stay. Him accepting the offer to this movie was because he wanted to work with legendary Director Ridley Scott, not because he wants to be some mainstream movie star. If that was the case he would have accepted the Johnny Storm offer. He said he has zero plans of working in superhero films or anything like that. His biggest fear is ever losing any anonymity.
He’s also made it clear theatre comes before films, and television (which is where he got his big breakout) is the bottom of the barrel for him.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 24, 2024 2:35 AM |
R31. Holy shit, he’s been everywhere lately and has four upcoming films.
His sister, Paul Pescal also has been busy as fuck.

He has no cause for fear.

In r11, that woman had the good fortune to catch the phone
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 24, 2024 4:32 AM |
Say what you will about Crowe but he was extraordinarily good in LA Confidential and Master and Commander. No current leading man could touch him in either of those performances
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 24, 2024 6:43 AM |
[quote] r19 : so yes, this movie will need to gross roughly $800M to even break even.
Yes, the numbers are very preliminary, but your number could be right for the approximate break even. Here's Screen Rant on their own break even point calculation:
[quote] Based on the typical notion of a marketing cost doubling the budget, plus the cut for theaters the movie plays in, Gladiator 2 could need to make upwards of $700 million in order to break even.
In 2023, only 5 movies made over $700 million worldwide according to Boxoffice mojo.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 24, 2024 7:16 AM |
Here's the reference for the 2023 Worldwide box office for the top 200 movies, listed from highest to lowest.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 24, 2024 7:19 AM |
The film isn’t gonna do very well because it’s a sequel no one asked for. There is no excitement or anticipation for this. Since it was announced people have been negative about it all over the internet, and still are.
Add the strikes delaying things, the stories that extras were treated terribly on set and animal cruelty, and numerous on set injuries and this film is set to be a disaster. Not the fault of any of the actors though.
