True Detective Season 4–part II

What was the point of putting Fiona Shaw in this? They didn’t give her much to do. Her character was not integrated into the story.

HBO renewed this for another season with Issa Lopez at the helm again.
Is Nic Pizzolatto going to have another temper tantrum on social media.

I don’t know why they had to shoehorn this into the True Detective brand. I’m sure it would have done fine as a standalone series.

Nic Pizzolatto is an insufferable twat whose very good (not great) writing of season 1 was carried by Woody and Matt's performances and Cary Joji Fukunaga's excellent direction. He's displayed a total lack of grace in his postings about the fourth season.
Don't get me wrong. I think Issa Lopez is a TERRIBLE writer and an almost equally poor director whose work on season 5 is at times laughably bad. But, better to just offer 'no comment' than to shit all over her work. There's no way he's going to come out of this looking good and, worse, it might hurt his future development offers from execs who are rubbed the wrong way by his behavior.

I think her directing was good, visually this season looked good and had a lot of nice visuals r5. But her writing...
I would rather someone else write season 5 and she directs it.
Nic's temptrum is absurd not only because it is unprofessional, but he is still a credited executive producer so he is getting paid for these True Detective season while doing nothing.

I just finished this. Can I have the six hours back?

I bailed after the fourth episode. Too hokey, and getting worse. Jody and the rest of the cast are wonderful, but wasted on this material. My partner is watching the remaining episodes with his earbuds in.

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis were excellent.

R8, if you like the young cute cop, you may want to watch last episode. You’ll get to see him in his boxer shorts.

r10, why how big of you to offer up the boy, despite that I never mentioned him. For the record, I'm into Daddies. But I'm glad for you that you enjoyed seeing the young man cleaning blood off the mirror in his undies. Carfeful what you project...
Meanwhile, my Daddy slogged through episodes 5 and 6 (the last) and said they were a mess. I tuned in for the last 15 minutes of the final episode. I was very satisfied with the ending. There were a lot of unexplained loose ends. The writing was really sloppy. They could have cut out a lot of extraneous crap and made this story a tighter, 4-episode thriller.
I hope we see more of the lesser-known actors in other stories. And, welcome back, Jody!

MARY!

I guess season 4 really wasn't for me. I'm with the loud (minority?) of viewers who were left cold by Issa Lopez's pulpy, hammy and nonsensical writing and shaky direction. BUT, I also thought much of the acting was pretty lousy. It was exciting to have Jodi back at the center of pop culture after so many years, but I found her performance really uneven -- certainly nothing approaching her best work in film. And, I found Kali's acting pretty... limited. Not that people can't... transition from career to career. But, I'm not too surprised to learn she's a retired boxer with a very slim list of acting credits.

What the Hell am I watching? Is it a murder mystery? Is is a supernatural movie? Is there any reason we saw each main character brush their teeth?

R2 I read about it in an interview with the writer of Season 4. Fiona Shaw’s dead lover whose ghost shows up to tell her random stuff is Rust Cohle’s father. (McConaughy’s Season 1 character.) I’m not a TD obsessive so I never would’ve gotten there on my own.

I just finished binging and I have t tell you, I've see a lot in my life and I can say I have no clue what I just watched. Made me want to take off all my clothes and walk into the frozen sea.

What in the flying fuck. I just renewed my Max subscription after a long hiatus and this was the first thing I went for. I’m four episodes deep and I have no idea what the hell I’m watching.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 11, 2024 7:30 PM |
It doesn't get better r17.
I regretted watching it.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 11, 2024 9:03 PM |
Well I can’t go half way into something and not finish it, whether it’s a movie or show or a bottom. If I made it this far, I have to keep going until I reach the end.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 11, 2024 9:20 PM |
You can't? I can.
My rule generally is 4 episodes, though I broke it here admittedly. If I'm not into it by 4, buh bye. Not wasting anymore time.

If it was some Netflix show filled with no-names then sure, R20. But this is Jodie Foster on HBO. There has to be some sort of payoff at the end.

I'm about to watch it!

I hated this. Hated it. Nothing about it was interesting to me.

I can’t believe it got renewed again. It gets worse with every season. Nobody had anything positive to say about this latest one. How terrible will the 5th one be? How bad do things have to get before HBO pulls the plug?

Except, of course, for the Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Critic’s Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, TCA Awards, Satellite Awards, Astra Awards and Black Reel Awrds.

It was good, in my opinion.

Sweet merciful Jesus, you’re right. I had no idea that the critics ate this garbage up so much. Now I see why HBO renewed it.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 23, 2025 12:54 AM |
IMO HBO is in trouble. This whole HBO/Max format the stuff is now mostly garbage. HBO used to have quality stuff. Now it's mediocre bullshit and it is tied to Max so there is no difference. Too bad. Instead of improving Max which has always been trashy and commercial, now, HBO is trashy and commercial.

Yesterday I cancelled my HBO/Max. that's $17 a month I won't be spending.
