Am I the only one who doesn’t see what’s so great about this film? It feels so pretentious.
“Oppenheimer” - Overrated Garbage

Yes, it's overrated. Not sure it's garbage. Also overrated is your hyperbole.

No, but you might be the only one who thinks his capsule review deserves its own thread.
If you searched around for a bit, you'd see most of DL took a dump on this movie, or was at least lukewarm towards it. Very few outright fans.

I enter to defend OP’s hyperbole while acknowledging that an R1 has certain responsibilities.

Over the weekend, I watched it, plus the new Color Purple and Past Lives. I liked both of those better than Oppenheimer. Past Lives may be my favorite movie of 2023.

Anyone who doesn't like this movie is a brainless moron with no appreciation for history or the significance of the story.
You're just a brain dead, vapid moron who deserves SHIT movies like Barbie.
Oppenheimer is a masterpiece.
It will survive the ages, because of the multi-talented cast, the intelligence of the Director and cast, and the depth of the story being told.
People have already forgotten that pretentious pile of shit "Everything, Everywhere All At Once." It's nothing but silly garbage for silly people. Same with Barbie.
But Oppenheimer will last, and be talked about and appreciated for years to come.

It IS pretentious. The pretense being about the most pivotal change in the history of the world last century.
AMPAS loves movies like this. They are self validating movies.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 22, 2024 10:50 AM |
Both Oppenheimer and Barbie are overrated garbage that only succeeded because they were overhyped.
Very much like The Beatles, whose music/lyrics are pretty pedestrian.

Not everyone can like everything “acclaimed.” I have difficulty watching The Wire, for example. That doesn’t mean The Wire is not good, it just means it isn’t for me.
That being said,
It’s very clear that the OP is LIMITED.

I got totally lost on the Robert Downey, Jr. storyline toward the end. Maybe my brain was just too bored and tired by then.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 22, 2024 10:58 AM |
I have thirsted for movies like Oppenheimer.
In this age of Superhero movies, RE-MAKES, and garbage like Barbie, Oppenheimer is exactly the type of intelligent movie that we NEED in this cultural wasteland of Hollywood.
We have been clamoring for new and original movies, and Oppenheimer is exactly that.
So, THANK YOU Christopher Nolan!!

Intelligent? Oh, good god. Maybe to Drag Race viewers it’s intelligent.

Oppenheimer and Everything Everywhere All at Once will be viewed as companion pieces in the future.
They are both films about neurodivergence.
We are entering the Neurodivergent Era.

We have been in the neurodivergent era for decades.

Please don't even mention Oppenheimer in the same sentence as EEAAO R15.
One is vastly superior to the other.
And by that, I mean that Oppenheimer is vastly superior to that silly rubbish known as EEAAO.

That they sound “pretty pedestrian” today is because of the massive influence they had on popular music that followed them.

Oppenheimer needs to be seen on a big screen with a massive sound system. It doesn’t work well at home. It’s a standard bio pic but certainly not garbage. I would recommend reading Wikipedia about Strauss (RD character.) it’s not that easy to follow what’s going on with him in the film.
Barbie is just a very odd movie but also not garbage.

I know exactly why some people can't handle Oppenheimer.
The writing and the dialogue is WAY above peoples' heads.
It's such an intelligent movie, with such complex ideas and writing, that people of average to below average intelligence will simply not understand what's going on.
And that's completely understandable.
You can't teach physics to stupid people in three hours. Therefore, they will be bored.
But that doesn't make it a bad movie. It just makes it a SMART movie. For smart people.
Oh, and I agree with you R19. In addition to a big screen, you should watch it with the captions on at home. It really helps to be able to read what the characters are talking about.
But I disagree with you about Barbie. It is absolutely complete garbage.

I watched Oppenheimer last week on Netflix. It is difficult balancing the sound in this movie. I had to crank up the sound to hear the dialog. Then get my eardrums bursted out by the sound effects. About 45 minutes in I turned on the CC and could follow the movie better. Up until the first bomb test I was lost at some of the stuff. I was able to follow it after that segment. Downey was great as Strauss.

R7
What an edgy take re The Beatles.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 22, 2024 12:03 PM |
It’s a bore. Long and dull. Cillian Murphy is a complete blank. Everyone else is third rate to meh. RDJ sort of pulls off something amounting to a performance. Script is a bunch of nonsense. Nolan’s most tired work to date. His attempt at “serious” filmmaking. The Academy seems to be buying it.

You're the bore, dear. Long and dull, as you say.
Go back to your little Barbie movie. It's more at your limited intelligence level.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 22, 2024 12:11 PM |
Oppenheimer looked impressive and was well-acted for the most part but there's not much more to it than that and it plays fast and loose with various historical aspects of the project. It's the cinematic equivalent to the art world cynicism of "make it big and make it red."
Barbie was a huge pile of ideas about Barbie, none of which were explored because there were too many of them for anything to register. Robbie gives it her genuine all but she can't make a movie out of a million little false epiphanies.
The fact that they are still miles above the standard contemporary film is a reflection of the starvation of film culture overall, not a testament to their superiority.

I enjoyed 'Oppenheimer' as an intelligent film about a colossal subject. Performances all solidly good. It's by no means a great film, but compared to much on offer in recent times it was a good big-screen watch. I agree that the combination of fast soft dialogue by clever people blended with over-heavy music was a demerit. It's the music which should have been dialled down.
The above mention of The Beatles in this context is odd. I recently saw an old interview with (now topical) Bernstein, who observed that the best of the Beatles' ballads would last as long as the songs of Schubert. We'll never know, but I'd guess he's right.
'Oppenheimer' will never be in the top ten greatest films ever made, but 'Sgt. Pepper' will always be in the top ten greatest albums.

#23 for the win. Matt Damon's first scenes are almost laughable. It's like he stepped out of the limo, grabbed the script and started saying lines.
