Released on February 20, 1984 by Rough Trade Records. It famously features Joe Dallesandro on the cover. It remains is my favorite record by them. "Reel Around the Fountain" captures a gay male longing unlike any other song I've heard. "Suffer Little Children" is also beautiful and so fucking sad.

Rough Trade records - I never thought of that innuendo before.
Classic album - but it's one that I don't think many young people can relate or understand.
Groundbreaking.

I never realized how gay it was.

I was afraid to admit to liking The Smiths because, in the mid 90s (when I was in high school), they were deemed too gay.
But I did. Man, was a huge fan. By college, I was out and couldn't care less about being called gay. So I wore my Smiths love with pride!

The friend who got me into the Smiths ended up turning on them because they were too "faggy." So my experience mirrors yours, R4. I went right on stanning them though because I was a theatre guy and could use that for cover. Everyone knew anyway.

I was late to the party, but once I found The Smiths and Morrissey there was no turning back.

They were absolutely great, although Morrissey has since become a massive spoiled asshole.

I'm glad i got into them when they came out and there wasn't any 'faggy' comments about their music yet.
Extremely influential band - although never had a hit in the US charts.
